  • 5 Roles Of The Nigerian Vice President You Should Know

Citizen is a column that explains how the government’s policies fucks citizens and how we can unfuck ourselves.

A few weeks ago, we asked you, our readers, to tell us what stories you would like for us to cover on Citizen Zikoko and someone mentioned that we explain the roles of the Nigerian Vice President. And we said, why not?

Like many of you, we are also often wondering what exactly the role of the Nigerian Vice President is in government, and today, we will be answering that by sharing some of the VP’s functions.

In reading this, you might be surprised to learn that, unlike our current VP, a Nigerian Vice President’s duties do not necessarily involve walking around wearing AirPods and posing for pictures where they look as though they are attending to paperwork(?).

It is also important to know that their job however is a huge function of how much power the President decides to delegate to them. Yeah, and this is according to the 1999 Constitution Of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria. Here are 5 functions of the Nigerian Vice President.

    1. Exercise the Powers of the President in the capacity as Acting President:

The Vice President, according to the constitution, is legally permitted to assume responsibility for the President under any of the circumstances listed in the Constitution. For example, when the President travelled for a medical checkups and the Vice President as Acting President fired Mamman Daura as the DG of DSS.

    1. Exercise any other powers delegated to him by the President:

The Vice President’s role also involves carrying out functions or exercising powers delegated to him by the president. This could be anything from representing him at executive meetings to giving him the power to spearhead projects the president would normally have to oversee.

    1. Participates in all cabinet meetings and chairs it in the absence of the President:

Just as we mentioned in the previous point, much of the Vice President’s work involves standing in for the president, particularly in cabinet meetings where he meets with the ministers. The cabinet also serves as an advisory body to the president.

    1. He is a member of the National Security Council:

The Vice President is a member of the National security council which handles the country’s internal and external security affairs. It is not clear how much authoritative power he has in this regard, but by virtue of being a member, he is part of the decision makings.

    1. He chairs the National Economic Council:

The Vice President chairs the national economic council which was established by President Muhammadu Buhari on 29, June, 2015. The team meets monthly and acts as an advisory committee to guide the president on economic issues affecting the country and providing solutions to rectify them.

So there you have it, I hope now we know there is more to our Vice President than photoshoots.

  • Google, I’m About to Remove My Immunity!

Recent reports have been making the rounds about why Vice President Yemi Osinbajo wants to waive his immunity and we are here for all the drama.

Apparently, RootsTV released a video that had Tims Frank, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) making allegations against the Vice President, saying that he took N90billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to fund the 2019 general elections which Osinbajo has come out to say are unfounded claims.

The allegations made Osinbajo so upset that he’s actually considering suing Google if they don’t put down the video making the rounds via RootsTV.

He’s even more upset than we think because he has said he will waive his immunity to face his accusers, Tim Frank and Katch Ononuju, in court for maligning his reputation

    Now, I’ve got questions.

Can he actually do that? Wouldn’t it make a mockery of the seat of the Vice President if Osinbajo partially sets aside his immunity to deal with this? Did he really send Google that letter? Please tell me this is some sort of dream so I can wake up!

But, wait o, now that I think of it, what exactly did Google do wrong? They are just a host for these platforms that shared the story. Will they even respond? Considering that there’ve been a lot of people as important as Osinbajo that have had bad narratives told about them on online media, is his approach right though?

Furthermore, if his petition is miraculously adhered to by Google does this mean that every Nigerian will be put under scrutiny, whether for good reasons or not?

Well, since Yemi Osinbajo is lauded for being a pastor, professor and most importantly, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), asides from being Nigeria’s Vice President, I’m pretty sure he knows what he’s doing. Or…maybe not?

  • Uncle Yemi Osinbajo has done it again. This time, he has shown out for guys about the dreadful SARS situation.

Why does it seem like whenever Baba Bubs goes on one of his frequent medical trips, things just seem to work a little better? Somebody help me say political gimmicks good governance.

On Tuesday August 14, the Acting President aka Uncle Yemi gave directives to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to overhaul the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

    We were shook!

Especially because all our complaints had always been brushed off as false or exaggerated.

Just a few weeks ago, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Yomi Shogunle still trolled Nigerians with this irresponsible tweet. He should better switch careers if he wants to be making silly jokes online.

Oh, you remember SARS, the police unit that was so infamous for their abuse of power and Nigerian citizens, we had to write you a survival guide?

This is just one of the many, many videos people have used to back their complaints. Let’s not even go into pictures and narratives. But we’re all lying, hey. The #EndSARS movement has been going for at least two years! Nonstop police brutality for two years.

While we’re overjoyed that our pleas and relentless #EndSARS campaign finally made some headway, we still have some doubts.

Way too many people have been unlawfully killed, jailed and extorted for us to just accept it, and things are often not what they seem in Nigeria. Gotta stay woke.

First of all, it is important to note that this overhaul doesn’t mean the police department is going to be scrapped.

This overhaul is more like a reform. In summary, the state SARS will be broken down and the officers reassigned to the already existing Federal SARS (there will only be FSARS). I know what you’re thinking, but chill. We are told that this is only going to be after investigations into the existing abuse allegations have been done, as well as mental evaluations and retraining.

Again, I know what you’re thinking, because even the Federal SARS people abuse the citizens.

The new FSARS is to be strictly intelligence-driven and their duties are to be restricted to the prevention and detection of armed robbery, kidnapping, and apprehension of offenders related to the stated offences. Nothing else.

At least that’s what they’re telling us. Me I’m only a reporter.

How are the illegal arrests going to stop, you ask?

Well, the new FSARS officers are now mandated to go about bearing proper identities. They will have a ‘new’ uniform so there will be no more random black-polo-clad-hoodlum-looking-ass-niggas jumping out of unmarked space buses. At least this will curb the possibility of the officers being impersonated by armed robbers and such. Also, THEY ARE NO LONGER AUTHORISED TO STOP AND SEARCH! Let’s forget the fact that I still saw the same SARS doing that just yesterday.

What can we do if we still get harassed?

Call the police lol. Honestly, I don’t have an answer for this. This is a commendable move on Uncle Yemi’s part, but we worry about the enforcement and implementation. Hopefully, this is not just another one of those reforms that don’t change anything at the end of the day.

And if you’re like me that is happy about this development but still believes this is just pre-election gra-gra and doesn’t trust anything this government does, I hope you’ve gotten your PVC o!

If you haven’t, there are two more weeks for you to register. Hurry! If you need any help, we gatchu!
