  • Tomato Is Expensive Again, but These Simple Hacks Will Help

The seasonal hike in the price of tomato is upon us again, and it wasn’t a nice experience for Muslims who had a lot of heavy cooking to do for the just concluded Eid.

While we hope and pray Jagaban does something about it, these hacks will help you save more while having enough stew in your pot.

Buy as many carrots as you want — they’re really cheap — clean them properly, slice and blend with some equally cheap rodo. The taste and colour will be the same as your average tomato puree.

    Tomato paste

This is the ultimate lifesaver in these trying times. And if you’re worried about retaining the spice in your soup, go for the sachet variants with pepper.

    Dried red chilli

You’ll mostly find traders from the north selling this at your local market. It’s cheaper and a great supplement for a fuller pot of soup. Rehydrate it by soaking in hot water for some minutes before blending.

With as little as 50 – 100, you’ll get all the spice even the almighty ata rodo can’t bring to the table. Consider these for soups like ogbono and egusi, or when you want to make concoction rice.

    Dried rodo and tatashe mix

This is an economical option for making stew and all kinds of sauces. But you have to remove the seeds and rehydrate the flesh with water before use.

    Sombo or bawa

    Source: GidiMart

Also known as cayenne pepper, sombo is a great option for thickening your stew and giving that bright red colour. It’s also cheaper than tatashe.

    Barkono

If you’re looking to make grilled turkey, fish or chicken, you must be Dangote’s son. But if for some reason, you still can’t afford tomatoes, this pepper will save you the extra bucks. It’s much cheaper than your regular pepper mix and can be found at your local market.

  • Tomato Prices Have Crashed and We Are Just Too Happy

There’s always scarcity of one thing or another in this country. Mostly its petrol or money, but in the past months tomatoes did us strong thing!

The scarcity was caused by Tuta Absoluta, also known as tomato ebola, a moth species which led to the destruction of 80 percent of tomato farms in Jigawa, Katsina, Kano and Kaduna States.

The price of a basket of tomatoes basically rose from about N800 to over N25,000. Governor El-Rufai even sent a delegation to Kenya to find solutions to this saucy problem, because things like this started happening…

The delegates carried their bags to Kenya to get some answers to the wahala.

Kenyans were just looking at us like…

But to God be the glory, the price of tomatoes are finally back to normal, and we have the rains to thank. Apparently, those rude moths can only mutate in the dry season, and don’t survive in the rainy season.

Now tomatoes are in abundance and we can finally do this…

And eat our red, spicy Jollof in peace.

  • Some People Are Throwing Tomatoes For Fun In This Tomato Scarcity And We Couldn’t be More Pained
Tomatoes have become scarce and really expensive in Nigeria as a result of pestilence caused by a moth, Tuta Absoluta, which has damaged many farmers’ harvest across the country. Sigh!

And while Nigerians are trying to deal with this problem, you won’t believe there’s an actual tomato throwing festival in Spain annually.

During the festival known as La Tomatina people from all around the world travel to a village near Valencia in Spain, and throw tomatoes for entertainment. And guess what? This is the 70th year of the festival.

People suddenly began sharing images from previous La Tomatina festivals and these were our reactions:

When you hear about an actual tomato festival but refuse to believe it.

    Na lie abeg!

When you see pictures of them throwing tomatoes during the festival

    Are those even real tomatoes?

When you remember you bought 4 tomatoes at 500 Naira.

    Come and adopt me please.

When the tomatoes they’re throwing become bars of gold in your eyes.

    You people are gods oh.

When you realise the tomatoes they’re throwing can make a hundred pots of soup.

    Jesus!

When you don’t mind making stew with the tomatoes on the floor.

Who neatness don epp at this point?

When you start wondering how they got so many free tomatoes.

    How though?

When you start thinking of going to Spain to help them take care of their tomatoes.

    Edakun, let me assist you.

People of Spain, come and dash us the tomatoes that you’re not using.

    We’re not even doing shakara!
  • 16 Ridiculous Things That Are Imported Into Nigeria

Did you know that Nigeria spends nothing less than 1.3 trillion Naira on only food importation annually?

Shocking right? Well It’s true. Now think about the amount spent on importing other goods. Here are some of the things you wouldn’t believe Nigeria imported.

    1. Tomatoes

In fact, 16 billion is spent on importing them every year.

    2. Wrist watches

    3. Leather

Now think of all the leather bags, shoes and commodities you have eaten and all the income that could’ve been generated. No? We didn’t expect any remorse sha.

    4. Umbrellas

    Unbelievable, right?

    5. Walking sticks

Is your mouth opened in surprise yet?

    6. Human hair.

    We’re not judging.

    7. Tobacco

    8. Musical instruments

    9. Paper

All those exercise books and novels! Gasp!

    10. Matresses

    11. Artificial flowers

    Who would’ve thought?

    12. Rice

One would think importation of  Ofada rice (also known as brown rice in the abroad), a much more delicious and healthier brand of rice would be more valued and invested in.

    13. Palm oil

In spite of the unending number of palm trees in Nigeria.

    14. Salt

    15. Milk

    16. Sugar

Even with abundance of sugarcane sticks.

In this hard economic times, we hope efforts will be made into locally producing and also exporting some of these things.
