  • 6 Corny Things That Always Happens in Every Romantic Telenovela Series

As a kid, you probably spent most evenings watching telenovelas with your family. These days, the adult you sometimes looks for their familiar plots wherever you stream your movies and series. Time changes things, but telenovelas will always have one of these six tropes.

    1. Romantic montages

Telenovela could almost give Indians a run for their money with how long their romantic montages can be — the actors even sing sometimes. A woman and her man can fight for four seasons only to fall in love, have an episode-long romantic montage, and in the next episode, one of them dies. End of story.

    2. Evil Women and their underlings

Is it even a telenovela if there is no sinister character trying to make the lives of the protagonist and her love interests life hell? Bonus points if she has an evil child/children ready to do her bidding.

    3. Rich people falling in love with a poor people

It’s giving Nollywood because where does this happen in real life? They always have the most ridiculous meet-cutes where the rich boy hits her with his car and has to take her home. Tbh I too would like the universe to help me like that. 90% of the time, the poor person ends up being some rich man’s secret child, which is even more unrealistic. But do we keep watching? Hell yes.

    4. Hospital scenes

This has to happen because someone has to either: suffer  a ghastly accident, be in a coma, have acid poured on them or die, for the plot to move forward. What else will bring family members closer?

    5. Big family secrets

If it’s not a secret family or child, it’s that someone or some people have treasure buried somewhere that only the chosen ones in the family can find, or you will run mad. Makes me wonder if Nigerian copywriters just copy their answer sheets and change some words.

    6. Cheating

Men in telenovelas dey cheat shege! They will cheat on their wedding day, when their wife is sick or about to give birth, and will still have the audacity to be surprised when a child appears 10 years later and calls them father.

  • 7 Super Specific Things That Are In Every Telemundo Series

    1) A female lead character:

She’s a pretty, brunette-haired woman who’s either fierce, strong, and independent or a naïve damsel in distress. There is no in-between. If she’s strong and independent, chances are she’s an orphan whose family died in some tragic accident before the show. If she’s naïve, her parents are alive but poor as shit.

    2) A male lead character:

He’s billed as a lead but he’s really just there to be the love interest of the real lead, the woman. He’s good looking and has abs that you can use to grate okra. He’s either a poor and lowly farmhand or a super obnoxious trust fund baby boy who’s just self-aware enough to want to change after the female lead insults him for being a discount Tony Stark.

    3) An ageing patriarch who will soon die of an undisclosed illness (portrayed as a super-wheezing cough) and leave his wealth behind for his family members.

You would think that someone like this would be smart enough to leave a will behind, and you’d be right. But his will be so fucking vague that it’ll throw his family into disarray as they (occasionally physically) fight each other for his property.

    4) A Hacienda (Usually a coffee field):

This is just one of the many properties up for grabs after the ageing patriarch dies but for reasons never revealed, everyone will want it. So most of the show’s scenes will take place there.

    5) The show’s main villain:

It’s always the much younger second wife of the ageing patriarch who may or may not have sped up his death by lacing his food with tiny amounts of anti-freeze not enough to show up in scans so his organs slowly shut down. She’ll spend most of the show plotting against the male and female leads. Her rain of terror will end when she’s blown to bits by a bomb she meant to set under the female lead’s pillow but mistakenly detonated. Either that or she’ll get thrown off a rooftop by the male lead while the rest of the cast cheers.

    6) An incredibly stunning, mildly-evil sibling of either the male or female leads.

They are mildly-evil because they only exist to shake up the show’s storyline when the main villain is in-between evil schemes. And they’re always super attractive so your mind can trick you into accepting them when they eventually have a change of heart two episodes before the series finale.

    7) A shit ton of tragedy:

Have the female lead character have her baby stolen immediately after giving birth and then have her have a mental breakdown which will lead to her losing her memory. Have the male lead be arrested and spend 15 years in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. When the ageing patriarch is being buried, have the show’s villain blow up the church.

The key is to have fun with it.

  • 5 Questions About Second Chance (From A Non-Viewer)

I was in junior secondary school when El Cuerpo Del Desco (Second Chance) premiered on AIT (aka the home of telenovelas in Nigeria) and made 80% of the country lose their damn minds.

Not me though. I never saw it.

A lot of people claimed they loved it because of the storyline but I think it was because of the extremely good-looking cast. Specifically, the actor who played the main character, Salvador.

Now, even though I never watched it, I heard details about it. Enough details to pique my curiosity, but not enough to actually watch the show. So now I have questions.

    Questions like:

Where did original Salvador’s soul go when Pedro’s soul took over his body?

Let’s even excuse how fucking rude it is to just knock someone out of their body and take over their life for months. Where did original Salvador’s soul go when Pedro’s soul took over? Limbo? Do you realize how mad confusing and terrifying that must’ve been for him?! Jesus Christ.

Seeing as the show never gave an explanation for what happened, can we assume that it was a mistake made by the angel(s) who handle(s) afterlife proceedings for the recently deceased?

Is this a thing that happens often? If so, heaven really needs performance reviews for its staff. What if he had woken up in a poor person’s body in a country thousands of miles away (as opposed to someone close by)? He never would’ve found his way home.

If it wasn’t a mix-up, why did Pedro (of all the people that die every day) get this opportunity?

Is it because the angels in charge knew he had family secrets to uncover and wanted the problematic events to play out for their entertainment? Ugh, I love messy celestial beings that live for drama!

I heard that Pedro’s much younger wife, Isabel, kills herself and Salvador at the end so they can be together in the afterlife. What if they ended up going to different places?

I mean, she did cheat on Pedro with his employee and married said employee not long after Pedro died. Only for her to MURDER THE EMPLOYEE after she set her sights on a young, hot farmhand named Salvador (possessed by Pedro’s soul). All I’m saying is, she clearly wasn’t a good person, and her going off to lover’s paradise with Pedro at the end was bullshit.

Did anybody even care what original Salvador’s family went through the entire time he wasn’t with them?

Original Salvador’s wife on the phone with the police when he didn’t come home that night.

I mean, they had no idea where he was or what happened. All they knew is that he went to work one day and never came home. Did he run out on them? Did he die? He was the family’s sole provider for God’s sake. Pedro is such a douche for not even sending them money at least.
