  • “People Still Like Me This Much?” — Reminisce Celebrates Fan Response to “Alaye Toh Se Gogo”

    If you asked teenage me who Reminisce was, he’d recite: “How far, how far? 1827765. Report your location. Sarz on the beat, AKA Knackdemus. O ja?!” — Reminisce, Kako bi Chicken (2012).

    I got into the veteran rapper’s music in 2013, and he’s never let me run out of cool slang to recite with my friends. First, it was Hurricane, a song he dropped as a warm-up to his sophomore album, Alaga Ibile. Beyond the unmatched thrill of bursting out “bai” at the end of each bar, Hurricane introduced me to my current favourite rapper, PayBac iBoro, who Reminisce met at music producer, Sossick’s studio and gave a chance to take the second verse. 

    A decade later, Alaye To Se Gogo (ATSG), Reminisce’s latest body of work, shows remarkable evolution — his testimony as a street conqueror. With this album, he’s pushed through the ranks and sits in the upper echelon of the game. I sat down with the 42-year-old rapper and had him share the inspiration behind Alaye To Se Gogo, its significance and what he’s learned in his 20-year career. 

    What inspired Alaye Toh Se Gogo Volume 1?

    Reminisce: The will to make music for people who still want to listen to me. 

    Before I returned to the studio, I asked my team if people genuinely wanted my new album; making music is expensive. I wasn’t sure I cared about making an album, but they convinced me that the request was high and we put it out. Since then, I’ve been extremely surprised. A lot of folks are listening to the album and talking about it. I actually have a huge, loyal following. 

    People still like me this much? It’s great. I appreciate it. This album came from a place of love and passion.

    What was the creation process like?

    Reminisce: I like to sit in my home studio, listen to music and do my thing. I prefer to write to the beat. It’s easier because I don’t have to adjust anything after. It’s plug-and-play; I load the beat and write on my phone. 

    What’s a day in your life like?

    Reminisce: I typically wake up around 12 p.m. or 1 p.m., brush my teeth and sneak in one or two smokes to start my day. I go through my emails and digital numbers on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc. I check my socials to see who’s banting who — I love Twitter so much.

    If I have work to do, I get to it. If travelling is involved, I’m up in the morning and on my journey. Whether by road or plane, I try to make it early and get to wherever I’m going by 4 p.m. at most. On days I have music to make, I get in my home booth and record. Or play my video games, if I’m less busy. 

    Around mid-afternoon, my daughters are back from school, so I spend an hour or two with them, go back to my studio to watch evening football matches, listen to music, watch podcasts, whatever. My day is basically about me, my work, my kids and my family.

    Are you ever worried about ageism in the Nigerian hip-hop industry?

    Reminisce: No. It’s almost as if people don’t want to see older artists who’ve donned stages and mics for years keep going. But everyone has their audience. People who grew up listening to my music and are still alive, so I have to serve them. 

    All the online reaction to Alaye Toh See Gogo has been from a certain demographic: people who’ve listened to my music since secondary school or uni and have grown up. They feel like they grew up with me and my music.

    Who influenced your music growing up?

    Reminisce: Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound crew and Dr. Dre were huge influences. But the overall impact was Michael Jackson. I can sing 20 Michael Jackson songs right now. My favourite is Billie Jean. MJ was my eldest brother’s age-mate, and they shared the same birthday. So, my admiration is also a bit personal. I was sad when he passed away. 

    MJ was the first celebrity I recognised before falling in love with hip-hop. Then in secondary school, there was the Snoop Dogg and Juice and Gin period, and there was Biggie and 2Pac. I used to mime all their lyrics. Nas and Jay-Z came into the picture, and their music finished work on me. I preferred Nas; I respect money-making talk and all, but I’m for lyricism.

    But everything you’ve heard in my music so far is about my own life. I lived with my mum growing up. After she passed, I shuffled between my step-mum and grandmother. This was a bit of an eye-opener for me: understanding different people, perspectives and polygamy. 

    I grew up in a liberal Islamic home. We performed duties and rites as Muslims, but my dad never pressed us to be religious. When success came, and my life changed, I started trying to be a proper Muslim. I make more time for my children and my relationship with my creator. I don’t want my kids to see me as a pagan. I want them to identify me as Muslim. I’m still liberal, but I practise Islam as a way of life beyond prayers and fasting.

    What’s one thing you still aspire towards?

    Reminisce: Nothing. All I’ll ask for is a long life. Anything material or career-related? No. I don’t make demands on myself because I understand what will be will be. I only need the will to do things I want to do. Suppose I want to put out an album. I’ll ensure the standard is good enough for anything that wants to happen from there. Anything besides that is pressure, and I’m done with that.

    I once saw a photo of you with your head buried in a book, and my takeaway was you’re a book lover. Am I right?

    Reminisce: Yes. 

    My favourite book is Sir Alex Ferguson’s “Just Champion!” Growing up, we watched Manchester United all the time. Sir Alex was Michael Jackson standard to me — untouchable. His first book came, and I had access to his life story, dressing room issues and many backstories. The book touched me. I read it five times. It was emotional, and it’s still on my shelf.

    It could’ve been football over music?

    Reminisce: I no too sabi like that. I played for my secondary school twice. The two times, they fired me. I have friends who forced themselves to play but didn’t make it. I knew football wouldn’t work for me; I was honest with myself. But rap? There was no doubt it was my thing.

    How did you know you were a good enough rapper?

    Reminisce: As a teenager, I was doing it for fun, but people listened and showed support every time. When I asked my sister if I was excellent, she’d acknowledge me and boost my confidence. So I was sure about it. But for football, I was like Wan-Bissaka or Harry Maguire — average. If you put me inside a team, nothing would show. Football fans would liken me to Kalvin Phillips — nothing exceptional on the pitch.

    What was your early experience as a rapper?

    Reminisce: I had the worst experience with rejection. 

    In the early days, I was the radio station DJs’ joke material. They used to call me “The King of Promo CDs” because I printed a lot of them. I used to print a thousand copies of three to four singles a year. Everybody knew me; everybody had my CDs. But I’d go to radio and TV stations, and I’d see them in the dustbin because people didn’t care. I was that guy. But I’ve never let that weigh me down or make me look at people who didn’t help differently.

    It’s part of my journey. Specific incidents happen to me so I can remember where I come from and where I’m headed. I don’t dwell too much on them, whether positive or negative. No matter how much good or bad happens to me, nothing stops my movement. That’s why when people say I’m a good storyteller, I refute it. I have many stories to tell because I’ve been through a lot. I don’t have any regrets about my life and decisions.

    This reflects in your stage name, Reminisce

    Reminisce: Reminisce came up because of the first four letters of my name, Remilekun. I went with the flow because it sounded nice. I actually wanted to use MC Khalid, but no one used Muslim names back then, except maybe Rakim, and he was older. 

    Each of your projects seems curated to take listeners through the significant phases of your life. Is that intentional?

    Reminisce: I’m intentional about my art and its perception. I have to grow, and I want anyone who listens from the start to grow with me. As the listener evolves with Reminisce, the music must level up. If you listen to Alaye Toh Se Gogo and you heard shit I already said on Alaga Ibile, there’s a disconnect.

    My albums are portraits. See it as a young guy who once didn’t have a beard growing a goatee. Soon, the beard will connect, and you’ll see that “Alaga is getting older.”

    I don’t want to force anything. I evolve, and so do the people I serve my music. I carry them along and make it fun.

    What’s the hardest lesson you’ve learnt so far?

    Reminisce: Zero expectations. 

    People will always be people. Know this, and you won’t be disappointed. My dad told me I shouldn’t pressure myself. I have to make it, but I also have to ask myself what I want. He told me to have it at the back of my head that the fruit of any decision I make will affect my family. Whether for good or bad, I have the option to choose. 

    What does success mean to you?

    Reminisce: Success is relative in the Ibile Movement. It’s why Olamide’s Grammy nomination means the shit to us. We can’t compare ourselves to new kids who have the springboard or backing, doing genres way more popular than we do. People’s journeys and stories are different. To me, whatever makes anyone feel like they’re made or fulfilled is a success. Some people will never win a Grammy. Some people have been nominated for the award but will never win. Whether a Grammy is your metric for success or not, it’s all about perspective.

    You just have to figure out what audience you want to reach because there’ll only be a few global talents every year. You need to focus on your audience, serve them what they want and milk it. Everyone can’t be Drake; he’s a rare phenomenon. Stick to your thing. There’s money to make everywhere.

    As a rapper in Nigeria, understand that you represent a disadvantaged genre right now. Even the numbers and metrics overseas are saying the same thing. You must be extremely smart about your music and business.

  • Reminisce Is Getting Sharper With Age

    After making fans wait eight years for his fifth studio album, releasing and changing his tracklist three times, Reminisce finally released it to the public on October 27, 2023.

    Many Nigerian OGs are tiring out, and their new albums barely give the value of their previous work. But not Reminisce, who’s been in the game since 2003. He returns with Alaye Toh Se Gogo, his first body of work since El-Hadj in 2016, and it’s worth the wait. 

    On first listen, there’s no ascertaining what direction he’ll attack in, even though a general idea of his brand pops in one’s head — clever one-liners and lamba, charging quotables and daring subliminals at foes, sexcapade and high-libido anthems, with some romantic cuts, of course.

    He’s been in the limelight for eleven consecutive years since 2012, remaining highly rated and critically acclaimed through it all — “do am if e easy,” Reminisce dares naysayers on the opening of this new album.

    Alaye Toh Se Gogo is a street laurel that loosely translates to “certified boss” or simply “top boy,” but the type that Dushane in the grimy British TV show Top Boy would aspire to become. It’s a different beast when a veteran steps out, especially after hibernating for almost a decade.

    The first track, Eyes, is a look-back at the uneasy come-ups he achieved against odds. He shares how if music hadn’t paid off for him, an unclean route would’ve likely made a way. This is a story that finds resonance with many individuals around the world.

    Mayorkun’s support in chorus duty makes it the perfect album opener — a good combo of rap and singing — as Reminisce fires two shells of boastful yet introspective verses. He had to remind listeners and the competition that he gets sharper with age. He already proved he’s among the meanest rappers in the country.

    Awon Aye follows. In Reminisce’s singing bag, another ammo spawned, shot at animosity and jealousy. He cleverly interpolates Pasuma’s Ligali into the hook, giving a local tongue-lashing vibe to it. This song is potent enough to give supposed detractors a wobbly walk when they pass by.

    Since Omo X 100 dropped in 2021, Olamide only sings the chorus on their music collaborations, the heavy rap-lifting left to Reminisce. However, on their latest, Orin, the third track on ATSG Vol. 1, they relayed their silent battles and unexpressed emotions, which they compensate with a rewarding bank account and baller lifestyle. They talk about how hard it is for men to bottle up their feelings and keep rising to the occasion. Though soul-lifting, this track is a classic case of men drowning in hustle as a suppressant or escape from vulnerability and life’s drama.

    If you’re familiar with Reminisce’s catalogue, all the man wants is his money and more money. This is the theme of Hustle featuring Bnxn and D Smoke. Alaga recounts his struggles to succeed and the vim to push his hustle and never stop.

    Well, what’s a Nigerian to do?

    The next track plays, and with it comes a realisation that Reminisce’s rap cuts are getting shorter with each song. In just a minute and approximately thirty seconds, Reminisce went full rapper mode on Recycle, just flexing his lyricism. It’s unsatisfying, but there’s more rap on the next track, E.N.K.R. The album version of the previously released song includes Ycee and artist-producer, Rhookcastle, who had the most outstanding performance on it.

    Reminisce gets on his “sex symbol” assignment with innuendos at the core of his music on this album. On Shina Peters with Mohbad, he paints a picture of his sexual affairs — straight to the “ta-ta-ta” playlist.

    Although Rotate brings out your waistline and legwork, it ends before four steps are made. Another display of Reminisce’s versatility, he effortlessly sings fuji with a new-age delivery that maintains its tempo and modulation, making street-pop his domain. Olu Maintain, the next track, showed him in his fresh pocket; a drill jam alongside youngins Dremo Drizzy, OdumoduBlvck and Powpezzy.

    Oxlade’s falsetto cued in Why?, a romantic song in which Reminisce remained uncouth. The longing expressed on the song segued into Mora, a folklore performance — one of the best songs on the album — quite similar to his 2017 hit, Ponmile.

    Although a filler Reminisce insisted on keeping on the album despite his team’s stance, Tight featuring Kayode, is a chilled braggadocious song about making money and having fun. It also speaks to Reminisce’s dedication to propelling young talents to a wider audience. Kayode, Powpeezy and even OdumoduBlvck, who recorded his verse for Reminisce before his breakout song, Declan Rice, dropped earlier in the year. On the Zero Conditions podcast, Reminisce mentioned how he’d rather do this than tweet about his support for the “young cats”.

    The album ended with an acoustic rendition of Mora, the perfect street song to express love that doesn’t want to end.

    Alaye Toh Se Gogo is a solid body of work away from his previous works and successful formula. It offers cohesive production and stellar performance at the age of 42. Age is just a figure in hip-hop. Legends in their 40s and 50s, like Show Dem Camp, M.I Abaga, Nas, Wu-Tang, still make music, cancelling the old “too old to rap” narrative. Fact is, if you got it, you got it.

    Reminisce got it. 

    Alaye Toh Se Gogo is the new honour the street has bestowed on him. This title encapsulates his evolution as an artist, solidifying his superstardom and street legend.

  • Alaga Ibile Once Sold Shoes, But That’s Not All We Found Out in His Zero Conditions Interview

    I’ve been watching snippets of Reminisce’s Zero Conditions Podcast interview on X. Then I finally succumbed and spent one hour, and fifty minutes of my life watching just how ridiculously funny and entertaining the rapper is, and I have no regrets. Y’all won! 

    Now what did I find out about Alaga Ibile? Let’s see.

    Reminisce was fighting for his life with “Kako Bi Chicken”

    It might have been a bop at the time, but what we didn’t know was that SAPA was a serious fuelling engine. In Alaga’s words “If to say that song no blow, I for don off”.

    He’s a cool dad with a moderate dash of “Africanness”

    Gentle parenting, AKA naughty corner and “you’re grounded” are foreign concepts to Alaga. For context, he told his daughters “No cakes” during their last birthday and took them to an orphanage to see beyond their bubble.

    It was nice knowing Nollywood but that’s over

    I’ve been highkey expecting to see Reminisce make a return in some of the big Nollywood titles we’ve seen this year. But now I know it won’t happen. Alaga said he’s been there, done that and moved on.

    “I’m not acting again; I’m not interested anymore.”

    A bromance with Olamide

    Not gonna lie, watching Reminisce dote on Olamide made me blush a little. Alaga said “He’s a cool kid; very respectful”, and was a major push for him to release his last project, ATGS Vol 1.

    He was a footwear plug for UNILAG students

    To be honest, it shouldn’t be news that Alaga is an all-round hustler. But if you didn’t already know, he once sold footwear to the “rich kids” of UNILAG.

    It’s family over everything here

    Here’s the gist: Reminisce had no idea his daughters’ room had been repainted for two years, even though he stayed in the same house with them. That was a wakeup call to step back and prioritize family over fame.

    He loves “Kukukukuku” AKA Amapiano, but…

    I lost my shit for five minutes straight when Alaga described amapiano as “Kukukukuku”. 

    Our man attended Obi’s House and had to beg DJ Obi to put the spin on street jamz because he couldn’t deal with the amapiano line-up.

    He genuinely cares about men

    Alaga said “men go through a lot”, and I agree. But that’s not the best part of the gist. Turns out he recorded “Ponmile” to highlight some of the things men go through in relationships.

    Therapy where?

    For a self-styled “meninist”, Reminisce has never had any reason to visit a therapist, and I find it sus. Our man said it’s a concept for the “new generation”. Instead, he takes his health and stress management seriously.

  • Alaga Ibile Becomes Alaye Toh Se Gogo: The Reminisce Timeline

    With a shiny gold incisor that signifies his journey to the Holy Land of Mecca, Reminisce became an El-Hadj and made his new title the title of his fourth studio album of 2016.

    Now, the OG rapper is ready to feed his fans with his fifth offering, his first full-length album in seven years.

    On August 7, 2023, Reminisce made the announcement and dropped a single and music video, E.N.K.R.

    The album title, Alaye Toh Se Gogo (ATSG), is a reference from the 1996 Nigerian film, Owo Blow, and a testament to Reminisce’s suave street credibility. Disputably an artist with some of the most encapsulating albums and titles in Nigeria, his debut, Book of Rap Stories (2012), saw a young Remilekun Khalid Safaru navigate the industry, seeking acceptance and a breakthrough. BORS gave us hits like Kako Bi Chicken (produced by Sarz) and 2Mussh (produced by Legendury Beatz). 

    2013’s ALAGA IBILE (chairman of the local rap movement) was a huge success with singles like Daddy, Eleniyan and Fantasi. His third album, Baba Hafusa which announced his first daughter’s name, became the first African Hip-hop album to debut on Billboard Charts in this streaming era, at number 12 on the World Music category — just a year after Olamide’s number four debut on the chart with Street OT (2014), though that was CD era. Crazy.

    During the lockdown of 2020, Reminisce put out a six-track EP, Vibes & Insha Allah, that revealed his other kids, Mo and Fatimah. Since then, it’s been two to three singles a year (Omo X 100 and Hello E in 2021; Alaye Toh Se Gogo, Hustle and Overdose in 2022).

    After taking a break from releasing music to focus on acting (King of Boys, Rising: City of Dreams) and a radio football show (The Agenda With Reminisce), Reminisce is back and set to drop a new album on October 27, 2023 — the new date he announced after he cancelled the album release in September.

    Alaye Toh Se Gogo will be a series, and ATSG Vol. 1 will have 13 tracks. It will feature big hitters like Mayorkun, Asake and Olamide, a frequent collaborator (Government, Respect, Loyalty & Honour, Omo X 100). It will include released singles like Hustle (featuring BNXN and D Smoke), Shina Peters (with Mohbad), an extended version of E.N.K.R (featuring Ycee and Rhookcastle) and Oxlade-assisted single, Why? (produced by Rhookcastle).

    These five bops indicate that Alaga Ibile will give us an all-round rap album — exciting news for hip-hop heads and enthusiasts of the ibile rap movement. Reminisce also stated that seven songs will get music videos.

    He did it for ALAGA IBILE (2013), so he can do it again.

    He also hinted at a joint music project with Olamide Baddo after they put out their respective albums. Baddo’s UNRULY is out already, and ATSG Vol. 1 will drop in two months, so we guess we’re about to be fed good.

    Transcending from the youngster rapper of Books of Rap Stories to an elder statesman role in the local rap scene with ALAGA IBILE, Reminisce has opened up about fatherhood on Baba Hafusa, dropped lessons that come with maturity and success on El-Hadj, and in the last few years since his last album, transformed into an action figure, like Ogogo (Taiwo Hassan) from Owo Blow.
    Consistency, cutting edge lyricism and credible street storytelling tied with bilingual delivery and amazing beat selection — this is how Reminisce has impacted the culture and stayed relevant for so long. We look forward to Alaye Toh Se Gogo Vol. 1, the next chapter in the story of his reign as Alaga Ibile.
