7 Nollywood Romantic Movies to Watch If You Just Finished “Bridgerton”

Whether you’re a new fan of Bridgerton who just binged all three seasons, or an old fan who is anxiously waiting for the second part of the third season to drop, we know some Nollywood romantic movies that might be the perfect placeholder.

    “Big Love”

He might not be the Duke of Hastings, but our resident Nollywood bad boy, Timini Egbuson, has all the allure to keep you glued to your screens. He stars alongside Bimbo Ademoye in this Biodun Stephen-directed romcom.

Adil (Timini) falls in love with Adina (Bimbo), an independent woman struggling to make ends meet at a graduate training camp, but a secret threatens to ruin their love. Shaffy Bello, Jaiye Kuti and Seyi Awolowo star in this film too.

    “Namaste Wahala”

You know how the fashion in “Bridgerton” is so fire? This might be the closest Nollywood movie to that because it combines the richness of Indian and Nigerian cultures.

Released in 2020, Namaste Wahala follows the budding romance between a Nigerian woman and an Indian man, leading to a charming and heartwarming tale of love, family and acceptance. It’s a delightful romantic comedy that celebrates love across cultural boundaries. Ini Dima-Okojie plays the lead with support from Richard Mofe-Damijo, Joke Silva, Osas Ighodaro, among others.

    “Hey You”

Bridgerton had its fair share of slightly “rated 18” scenes, and if there’s one Nollywood movie that can reprise these steamy scenes, it has to be Hey You. This movie recruits Nollywood’s Timini Egbuson to play Abel, a 32-year-old software designer who is shy about meeting women. Abel will rather hide behind keypads as a fan-only user, watching red-room models and jerking off to their kinkiness. On the other side is Bianca, a caregiver at an orphanage who doubles as an adult model on the 18+ site, to which Abel is a subscriber. A friendship soon starts between the two, and things get hotter when Abel discover Bianca’s double life. Efe Irele and Stan Nze also star in this movie.

It’s available to stream on Prime Video.

    “The Royal Hibiscus Hotel”

If you’re a fan of the picturesque settings in Bridgerton, you’ll love The Royal Hibiscus Hotel as it’s one of those Nollywood romantic movies with a stunning location.

Released in 2017, the Ebonylife production tells a charming love story as Ope, a talented London chef, navigates the challenges of reviving her parents’ struggling hotel. She soon encounters a guest who turns out to be her prince charming. Zainab Balogun, Kenneth Okolie, Jide Kososo, among others, feature in this film.

It’s available to stream on Netflix.

    “Isoken”

If you can relate to the way Bridgerton puts pressure on characters to find the perfect partner and get married, you’ll understand why Isoken deserves a spot on this list.

This 2017 movie follows the life of a woman who is under pressure to get married. When she meets Oshina, a handsome investment banker, she starts to question her ideas about love and marriage. It has all the tropes about self-discovery, family and finding love in unexpected places, just like BridgertonIsoken stars Dakore Egbuson and Joseph Benjamin, among others. It’s available to stream on Netflix.

     [ad]

    “A Sunday Affair”

It’s one of the Nollywood romantic movies that had lovers hooked during the Valentine’s Day period of 2023. Starring two of Nollywood’s most iconic actresses, Nse Ikpe-Etim and Dakore Akande, as best friends, the two fall in love with the same man, and it’s a downward spiral from there that makes for gripping TV. You’ll get the kick from this movie just like that Bridgerton season where the Sharma sisters fall for the Viscount Bridgerton. It’s available to stream on Netflix.

    “The Wedding Party”

You can’t possibly talk about Nollywood romantic classics and miss out on Ebonylife’s The Wedding Party. If you’re desperately hoping some of the Bridgerton couples take their romantic relationship offscreen to the modern day, this is one movie that’ll tickle your fancy.

Released in 2016, the romantic comedy which stars Adesua Etomi and Banky W unfolds against the backdrop of a lavish Nigerian wedding. Their love is threatened by cultural clashes that stem from the coming together of their different families. It also stars Sola Sobowale, Ali Baba, Ireti Doyle, among others. It’s available to stream on Netflix.

That woman is Efunsetan Aniwura, and this movie is about her exploits and struggles. Efunsetan became a menace after she lost her husband and only child. Directed by Steve Gukas, 93 Days (2016) focuses on the heroic acts of Dr Ameyo Adadevoh, a female physician who played a key role in curbing the spread of the disease. It stars Keppy Ekpeyong, Bimbo Akintola, Danny Glover, among others. It’s available to stream on Prime Video.

  • These Nollywood Films Are As Chaotic as These Tinubu Times

Since Tinubu baby hit the ground running 12 months ago, Nigerians have barely known a second of peace. From the fuel subsidy to the constant national grid collapses to the heat waves, we’ve been through it.

We would give you a list of films that might make you feel better, but since we’re already on the path of premium shege and confusion, we’ll just give you  a list of Nollywood films that’ll leave you confused AF. You might even find yourself wondering, “who the fuck brought me to this Nigeria.”

    “Water and Garri “

This one has really pretty cinematography and gorgeous talents,  but all of this is just to deceive you and lure you into the most confusing plotline you might see this month.

    “Japa!”

You’ll start “Japa!” a bit hopeful because all your faves are together. You’ll think you’re in for a cinematic masterpiece, but your bubble will be popped. You’ll be reminded of what your country is putting you through after you watch everyone go through senseless problems for the entire duration of the film.

    “Merry Men 3”

If we’re being honest, MerryMen 1 and 2 are in this boat as well. AY brought Ramsey Nouah and Jim Iyke to our screens and saw that people somewhat liked it, now he has refused to let us rest. You’ll get jokes, some bit of action, and a weird VFX scene in Merry Men 2 that might make you hate yourself for a hot minute.

    “The Kujus Again”

You’ll have a good time watching this; some bits are actually funny. It will be  a 5/10 experience until the plot loses you along the way and you’ll have to piece it all together. Think of it like how Nigerians are enjoying good music and global recognition right now, even though the weather is a mess and there’s fuel scarcity spreading through the land.

    “The Men’s Club” Season 4

Remember when they changed the actor playing Aminu and told us it was going to be okay? Was it really okay? Like that wasn’t enough, they decided to put our happy-go-lucky Louis and Lola through hell, which made us suffer. When you watch this season of TMC, you’ll feel like the writer and director have joined forces with your village people to show you pepper.

    “A Sunday Affair”

Two best friends fall in love with the same man, and that’s fine. However, when you add cancer, the trifling man actively pursuing them both and a possible death on the horizon, you get chaos that’ll take your brain a very long time to process.

“Skinny Girl in Transit” Season 7

There’s nothing as chaotic and confusing as THE Mide Macaulay kissing another woman while his child is in the hospital. Congratulations to whoever wrote in that little piece of chaos and sent the entire country on a downward spiral. Thank you for reminding us what our leaders do every time they speak to us.

    “Postcards”

If you want to watch RMD brood and pine over his long-lost love, then this is for you. Just make sure you’re ready to spend the next week contemplating if somoenone who truly loves themselves would willingly go through that.

Also, the characters act like they know what they’re doing and why they’re doing it, but if you look really closely, you’ll see that everyone is just running on vibes, and not even the good type.

  • Ayamma, Obara’m, and 8 Other Must-Watch Nollywood Musicals

Imagine this: You’re watching Adesua Etomi and Wale Ojo confessing their love to each other, then they randomly burst into song and a choreographed dance routine. There’s nothing as fun and freeing as Nollywood musicals (yes, even when Nancy Isime is singing about finding her missing child), and we can prove it.

From Oscar Heman-Ackah’s upcoming ‘Finding Messiah’ to ‘Sacred Tradition’ and Obara’m, Nollywood has always been in their musical bag.

    “Ayamma”

Think ‘The Little Mermaid’  if the main character, Iko, is in no way a princess, and her voice wasn’t stolen.

The chief priest just cursed the land, and there’s a possibility of her dying if she so much as hums a tune.

The film gave love, drama, and a really annoying protagonist you’d want to fight with all your might.

    “Ayinla”

You can’t really tell a story about the Apala musician who was stabbed to death by his manager without adding a little song and dance, can you?

Well, you could try, but ‘Ayinla’ said God forbid. The musical infuses original music from Ayinla Omowura, exploring themes of betrayal, rivalry, and what happens when you steal your manager’s girlfriend with zero remorse.

    “Inale”

If there’s anything I’m sure of, it’s whoever came up with the phrase “Fight for love” didn’t mean it the way the people of Otukpo took it.

Odeh, the love of Inale’s life, fights other suitors to win her hand and loses (which just goes to show how unserious he is). The film follows the couple after this loss, as Inale is drowned by her sister and becomes a temporary mermaid. Her sister marries her betrothed – Prince Agaba, and Odeh deals with the guilt of his loss.

    “Sacred Tradition”

An OG feminist, Ugomma hates the traditions and customs of her land and would rather walk barefoott on glass if it meant not following any of them. So obviously the writers make her fall in love with Dinta, a hunter, against the traditions of her village.

    “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”

‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’ themes include abuse, passion, faith, and love. The film follows Debby, a victim of spousal abuse, as she tries to hide the reality of her marriage to Moses, a choir leader and gospel singer.

    “Obara’m”

You know the producers of a musical really mean business when they throw actual musicians, like The Cavemen in and let them do their thing.

The Kayode Kasum-directed film tells Oluchi’s story as she confronts her past mistakes and reconnects with her daughter through their love for music.

    “Deadly Price”

The film is a spin on the folktale about the princess who married an otherworldly being disguised as a human and followed him to the land of the spirits.

‘Deadly Price’ follows Akwaeke as she falls under Odum’s spell, marries and follows him to the land of the dead. Now Ogbuagu must rescue her and return her to the palace where she belongs.

    “Lara and the Beat”

According to Trish from the movie, ‘Poverty isn’t interesting.’   But somehow, the Giwa sisters find a way to do just that in ‘Lara and the Beat’. Seyi Shay serenades us through the film as her character finds herself, falls in love, and sees her music career take off.

    “Nwaogo the housemaid”

There aren’t many things that match up to watching someone pine over and yearn for the person they love. It’s even betterwhen the person doing the pining is the prince of Okwe kingdom, and the love of his life is Nwaogo, who doesn’t send him like that.

We see Nwaogo sing about her tragic life in servitude, and then the prince comes into the equation. We definitely see him chase her around a tree and sing of his love for her multiple times.

    “Hoodrush”

Who needs P-Square when we can have the Jabarih brothers?

Singing, dancing, two-timing, and a possible robbery —you name it — the Jabarih brothers will do it as long as it leads them to success.

  • First Look: Ebonylife’s “Oloture” Returns as a Netflix Series

Three years after it premiered on Netflix, Ebonylife’s Oloture is making a comeback as a series on the streaming platform. In case you forgot why the first part had movie lovers in a chokehold, here’s a brief recap.

The Kenneth Gyang-directed film took an approach to human trafficking and prostitution that mirrors Nigerian society. Omoni Oboli gave a great performance with her portrayal of a pimp — the angry bird look and constant smoking — and Sharon Ooja as an undercover journalist blending in perfectly with prostitutes was equally entertaining. Who can forget the brilliant cinematography that captured the typical Nigerian nightlife scene?

  • Yoruba Nollywood Movies That Are Just Right for the Christmas Season

Are you in the mood for good ol’ slapstick comedy this holiday? Do you want to watch movies so ridiculous you’re moved to tweet the hilarity on X? Yoruba Nollywood is where the magic’s at. And that’s why we combed the movie archives to find these ones.

From classics to new releases, these laid-back movies are what you need to put yourself in the perfect holiday season mood.

    “Christmas Visitor”

When a Yoruba Nollywood movie has a title that tells 80% of the story, you know you’re in for a ride. In Christmas Visitor, an Igbo man (Lateef Adedimeji) visits a Yoruba family for the holidays, bringing with him a truckload of chaos.

    “Jenifa”

Funke Akindele’s A Tribe Called Judah is currently showing at the cinemas, but if you’re in the mood for something far more lighthearted, her hit comedy franchise, Jenifa, works better — if you haven’t watched it a thousand times already.

In the ribcracking film, Sulia, a village girl, seeks greener pastures in Lagos and moves with the wrong crowd. Each part of the franchise follows Sulia’s meteoric rise from a village champion to one of the movers and shakers of Lagos.

    “Holiday Visit”

Is it really a Yoruba Nollywood production if it doesn’t have enough melodrama that has you asking “How did we get here?” and “What’s going on?” In the Allwell Ademola-directed Holiday Visit, a daughter brings her fiancé home for the holidays only to discover he once had a thing with her mum. God, abeg.

    “Ija”

When a producer and director decide to go for a Mide Martins x Lola Idije x Wumi Toriola combo, you know they’re out to entertain viewers. Expect pure chaos in this movie where the actresses are on different sides of a family’s divide.

    [ad]

    “Jelili”

If you loved Home Alone as a kid but feel too old to rewatch it, Jelili should just about do it for you. It follows Femi Adebayo, who plays the titular character, Jelili, through his stupidly mischievous antics. This one will give you a good laugh.

    “Muniru ati Ambali”

When two of the leading comic actors of Yoruba come together to act as grown fools, you’ll have to bow for the result. Listen, as a Nigerian in Nigeria, you don’t need Hollywood’s Home Alone or Problem Child to give you your dose of mischievous comedy when you have this Nollywood title.

    “Alakada”

Toyin Abraham’s Christmas offering, Malaika, is currently showing in cinemas, but if you can’t stand queuing for tickets, you can make do with one of her best works to date, Alakada.

The franchise follows the life of a student with an impoverished background, who tells lies to raise shoulders with her school’s rich kids.

  • These Nollywood Movies Aren’t Christmas Movies, but They’re Pretty Close

Christmas is 23 days away, and that means you might have a brief break from capitalism. If you’re looking for Nollywood movies that’ll fill you with the Christmas cheer while you fill up on your Christmas meals, we’ve got you covered.

Think of Home Alone, with Kanayo .O. Kanayo’s Igwe Pascal as the thief, and Genevieve Nnaji’s Adaeze as Kevin. She’s been left home alone to save the family company from debt and a takeover by Igwe Pascal.

    Sugar Rush

What’s Christmas without a little chaos , a ride in an invisible car and a hunk pouring water on himself in your kitchen? Your Christmas might not have all of that, but this film definitely does.

    Obara’m

What’s a Christmas movie without singing, dancing and a child running away from home?

    Palava!

Think of what a traditional Christmas in Nigeria looks like — everyone running around trying to get things done, and your siblings getting on your last nerve. That’s what you’ll get with this movie.

    Egg of Life

What’s better than a movie about saving Christmas? A movie about badass women trekking the evil forest looking for ways to save a dying prince.

    Chief Daddy 1

While we agree the movie has its faults, it has enough funny moments for you and the family to share giggles, and that’s really what Christmas is about.

Please note, we’re recommending Chief Daddy 1 to you, watch the second part at your own risk.

    Ile Owo

A family gathers together and chaos ensues; it doesn’t get more Christmas-y than that.

  • Are You A True Yoruba Movie Stan If You’ve Not Watched These Mainframe Production Titles?

If you grew up in a typical Yoruba home, you probably watched one or two movies with an opening montage of a talking drum beating the rhythmic words: “Opomulero moja lekan”. It follows up with visuals announcing Mainframe Films and Television Productions. By this time, you know you’re in for some really good time.

Are You A True Yoruba Movie Stan If You’ve Not Watched These Mainframe Production Titles?

  • These Nollywood Rom-Coms Actually Belong in the Horror Category

Every now and again, Nollywood dishes out a couple romcoms to remind us love exists. Sometimes, they hit the spot and have everyone shouting “God, when?” Other times, they scare the living daylight out of us and leave us with zero desire to fall in love.

Here are all the Nollywood rom-coms that’ll have you clutching your pearls and sprinkling holy water at your screen.

    A Sunday Affair

Absolutely nothing romantic or funny about Sunday confessing love to two best friends, getting one pregnant, waiting for her to die, and then, raising their child with the other best friend. The other best friend whom he’d been sleeping with while the mother of his child was alive.

    Namaste Wahala

Didi’s mother referred to women as “Cows that shouldn’t be bought after they’ve been milked”. If that isn’t enough to have you clutching your pearls, the multiple dancing and singing scenes should do the trick.

    Dinner at My Place

A woman’s proposal is crashed by her man’s ex, and her $22,000 engagement ring ends up in the ex’s stomach.

If you don’t think it’s horrifying for the babe, then at least, you can see how it was a horrifying experience for the ring.

    Before Valentine’s

It’s set in a salon a day before Valentine’s, and normally, that’d be a recipe for humour. But the way skeletons started jumping out of everyone’s closets, you’d need to hold your chest every ten minutes.

    2 Weeks in Lagos

Ejikeme and Lola fall in love and get engaged in under two weeks. It seems like a cute love story until you get to the part where Ejikeme’s mother kidnaps Lola to keep her away from her son, and Lola decides to stay with him after her release instead of running in the other direction like a sane person.

    Love in a Pandemic

Honestly, this film is on this list solely because it’s set during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that was a horrifying time for all.

    Okafor’s Law

A man nicknamed “The terminator” sets out to prove the existence of a law only him and his two best friends care about, by seducing three ex-girlfriends in 21 days. It has the most important ingredient of a good horror film: a simple-minded protagonist embarking on an errand no-one sent him on.

  • What You Shouldn’t Do When You Find Treasure in Nigeria

If you’ve seen Tade Ogidan’s Diamond Ring, William Uchemba’s Mamba’s Diamond, and Kunle Afolayan’s latest, Ijogbon, you’ll agree when I say Nigerians don’t know how to act when they find treasure.

What You Shouldn’t Do When You Find Treasure in Nigeria
    Lead cast of Ijogbon

While the movies may be far-fetched from reality (because BFR, is there any treasure left to find in Nigeria?), it’s important to highlight the things you shouldn’t do when you get lucky and find diamonds or gold in this land.

    *SPOILER ALERT

    Don’t: Talk

What You Shouldn’t Do When You Find Treasure in Nigeria

Everything took a downward spiral after the four friends found the diamonds and started cooking up ideas right on the same spot.

Do: Go home, drink water, take a shower, and that’s only when you’ll make decisions with a sound mind.

Don’t: Patronise a lousy dealer called Owonifaari

What You Shouldn’t Do When You Find Treasure in Nigeria

It was nice enough that they were smart not to involve the police, but they compensated for that by making a terrible mistake. Listen, a dealer can make or mar you.

Do: Wake up every morning and stare at your treasure knowing you’re only a footstep away from poverty.

    Don’t: Go outside

What You Shouldn’t Do When You Find Treasure in Nigeria

Outside is dangerous enough when you don’t have money, so when you are a walking bag of diamonds, you should be scarce.

Although they had a secret shed as their hideout, they did a terrible job with it, hence why they were easily spotted.

    Do: Be unavailable

    [ad]

    Don’t: Splurge

Your brain is probably thinking “cash out” and buy all you’ve always wanted, but that’s the fastest way to get in trouble.

    Do: Embrace sapa even more

Don’t: Stay in the same city

Jamiu was the only one who had his head in the game among the four friends. Our man was only thinking of heading out to Canada. The others felt a tad bit too comfortable eating where they shat.

    Do: Japa

    Don’t: Involve third parties

The smaller the party, the safer it is and the juicier the rewards. Oby broke this code when she brought Omo Oba to the shed where they hid the diamonds. If you must involve a third party, it shouldn’t be a royal prince who’s already set up for life.

  • A Nollywood Guide to Understanding Old and New Money

Nigerians on X were caught up on drawing the most hilarious scenarios from the old money, new money conversation throughout last week. But is a topic even worth discussing if it hasn’t made for premium Nollywood home video content?

A Nollywood Guide to Understanding Old and New Money

If you still don’t have a full grasp of the topic, these Nollywood productions will make clear the difference between old and new money.

The Wedding Party | Old Money

Obianuju Onwuka (Ireti Doyle) describing Dunni Coker (Adesua Etomi), daughter of wealthy business tycoons, as a “native house girl from Ekiti state” is all the explanation you need as to why it isn’t just about the cash for old money folks. Do you have pedigree?

Living in Bondage | New Money

New money is fast, loud and noisy. When you show up, you have to show off. You can only get their attention when you pull up to a  family meeting or casual get-together in a Ferrari, Porsche 911 Carrera or Lexus GX, just like in this movie.

    Bling Lagosians | Old Money

Old money folks don’t care if you wear designers. The question is, are you wearing the latest season? In Bling Lagosians, friends drag Mopelola Holloway for wearing Ituen Basi of three seasons ago. God, abeg.

Simi, No Forget | Old Money

Marriage is a big deal for old-money folks. If you plan to marry one of them, prepare to answer questions like: “Who are your parents?” and “What is your pedigree?”

    Chief Daddy |Old Money

There’s always a great-granddaddy or grandaddy who has every member of the family set up for life with his will, like Chief Beecroft in Chief Daddy. Are you beginning to get the picture? Old money folks don’t even have to work; they do it for the sake of it.

    King of Boys |New Money

New money folks of today are the old money folks of tomorrow, which is why politics is important to them. New money parents are either running for office, sponsoring a political party or setting their wards up for a political appointment. In Alhaja Eniola Salami’s (Sola Sobowale) case, she wanted to run for governor but was outsmarted.

    Blood Sisters | New Money

It’s hard, and I mean extremely hard, to marry into old money, but folks can occasionally get lucky with new money. Mind you, if it happens, new money parents will make it crystal clear they don’t give a fuck about you or your family. Just like in the dining scene, where Uduak Ademola (Kate Henshaw) shows no regard for her potential in-laws.

Here’s your chance to network with old money and new folks at Zikoko’s upcoming meat festival.

  • Everything We Know About Editi Effiong’s “The Black Book”

In the last decade, we’ve seen exceptional growth in Nollywood. From Fifty, Wedding Party, Lionheart, Isoken and King of Boys to Blood Sisters, Shanty Town, Far From Home and Anikulapo, it’s safe to say the industry has its foot on our necks and isn’t letting up anytime soon.

Lately, Nollywood has taken the action thriller genre and done with it as it wishes. In 2023 alone, we’ve had Gangs of Lagos, Almajiri, The Trade and Jagun Jagun, with more such movies in the pipeline.

Written and directed by Editi Effiong, The Black Book might still be in the works, but here’s all we know about the star-studded action thriller.

    The director’s feature-length debut

Although he’s known for producing big-name projects like Up North, Day of Destiny and The Set Up, this is Editi Effiong’s first attempt at directing a feature-length film. His debut was born out of necessity. The filmmakers Editi approached couldn’t commit to working exclusively on his project for a year.

    Production was tough

The director and his crew had many challenges and jumped hurdles to shoot The Black Book. From building a road on set to building an airstrip to the COVID breakouts to transporting a 50KVA generator into Tarkwa Bay for a “simple” night scene, they did it all.

It’s been a long time coming

The Netflix original title took two years to write, a year of pre-production and 13 months to film.

    It’s a million-dollar baby

When Seyi Vibez sang Million Dollar Baby, he must’ve had The Black Book in mind. Co-written by Bukunmi Ajakiye, produced by Lala Akindoju and shot by Yinka Edward, the action thriller is the first Nollywood film to be shot on a million-dollar budget.

This budget covered the cost of guns, props, security, shipping generators to Tarkwa Bay for night shooting, and hiring professionals from six different countries, including the UK, the US and South Africa.

    It’s heading straight to Netflix

As announced at the “Lights, Camera … Naija” Netflix event, The Black Book will be released on the platform between late 2023 and early 2024.

Inspired by most Hollywood action flicks

In the movie, a father has to fall back on his military training to get justice for his son who was killed by a group of corrupt policemen. Sound familiar?

Strong stories call for strong performers

The Black Book stars Ikechukwu Onunaku, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Kelechi Udegbe, Denola Grey, Ireti Doyle, Shaffy Bello, Patrick Doyle, Bimbo Manuel, Norbert Young, Taiwo Ajai Lycett, Asabe Madaki and Olumide Oworu. Richard Mofe-Damijo plays Paul Edima, the father, a part he spent a year preparing for, following a strict diet and working out regularly.

    RMD dedicated 13 months

In Nollywood, more often than not, actors are allowed to work on multiple projects at the same time. But for The Black Book, Richard Mofe Damijo had to reject other projects and focus his time and energy on it. This might have something to do with the year-long preparation mentioned earlier.

The Nollywood filmmaker is set to reclaim her spot as a leading woman in cinema with her 2023 offering To Kill A Monkey. If you fell in love with Femi Adebayo’s King of Thieves (2022), this is another Yoruba epic that will have you at the edge of your seats. Orìṣà tells the story of a rogue king who loses respect for the gods and his people, and is struck with insanity. This happens at a time when a gang of highly skilled warriors form an alliance, threatening to take over his kingdom. Best Nollywood RomCom Movies in 2023

    Love in a Pandemic

In 2020, COVID-19 kept us in our homes, but it didn’t stop some people from finding true love. Bolanle (Nancy Isime), in an attempt to apologise to her boyfriend, dialled a wrong number belonging to Alex (Deyemi Okanlawon). The call to a stranger becomes a routine, and feelings get involved, but the pandemic is in their way. If you need something to convince you that your boyfriend shouldn’t stop you from meeting your true love, Love In A Pandemic is the answer.

    Big Love

Our resident Nollywood bad boy, Timini Egbuson, stars alongside Bimbo Ademoye in this Biodun Stephen-directed romcom. Adil (Timini) falls in love with Adina (Bimbo), an independent woman struggling to make ends meet at a graduate training camp, but a secret threatens to ruin their love. Shaffy Bello, Jaiye Kuti and Seyi Awolowo star in this film too.

    A Sunday Affair

Dubbed the Valentine Day’s movie of 2023, A Sunday Affair stars two of Nollywood’s most iconic actresses, Nse Ikpe-Etim and Dakore Akande. The powerhouses cast as best friends, Uche and Toyin, fall in love with the same man, and it’s a downward spiral from there that makes for gripping TV. From the cheesy romance to the dramatic chaos, it has all the ingredients to make you blush.

    Sista

This movie made me shed a few gangsta tears when I watched it. A single mum zealously fights for her two kids when their deadbeat dad tries to win them over after being absent for years. He does this using his wealth and influence to entice them instead of seeking penance and establishing a connection. Their furious mother swings into action to detach them from a man who never loved them in the first place.

The acting performances of Kehinde Bankole, Deyemi Okanlawon and Bisola Aiyeola. were striking, and many say it’s the best Nigerian film they’ve seen in a while.

Best Nollywood Thriller Movies in 2023

    House of Secrets

If you’ve ever been in doubt about the cinematic revolution that’s unfolding in Nollywood right now, this film is all you need to have a change of perspective. Director Niyi Akinmolayan raised the bar in cinematography and production design such that every scene leaves you more intrigued than the last. The story follows Sarah (Najite Dede), who regains her lost memories of a traumatic incident after extreme measures by people seeking to expose a corrupt politician.

    Hotel Labamba

Ace director, Biodun Stephen, led a stellar cast for this comedy-thriller that had me sold right from the trailer. Hotel Labamba is Nollywood’s attempt at a murder mystery, and if you’re looking to put on your investigative hat, you should totally binge this. In it, an Instagram influencer is murdered, and every guest at the hotel becomes a suspect, with the pressure on detectives to solve the case before the killer strikes again. Lateef Adedimeji, Bimbo Ademoye and Femi Adebayo among others are featured.

    Dark October

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEXPp5lGpYA

Executive-produced by media entrepreneur Linda Ikeji, Dark October opened old wounds through its near real-life portrayal of the 2012 Aluu Four Lynching. This movie will have you asking why we need to relive this painful memory and nodding in agreement to the wake-up call for jungle justice to be nipped in the bud. There are no Nollywood regulars in this one, but it’ll still have you sat. But brace yourself to cry hard during and after watching.

    Nkemakonam

Nkemakonam has an incredible storyline with captivating themes of motherhood, premarital pregnancy and castigation. A young girl is cast aside by her community after getting pregnant, leading her to deliver her baby herself. This is one of the best Nollywood productions of 2023 so far; the acting, pacing and cinematography are nothing short of amazing.

Best Nollywood horror movies of 2023

    Omozi

In a bid to japa and give herself and her daughter a better life, Omozi falls into the trap of human traffickers who ship her to Malaysia and her little daughter, Joyful, to Libya. Although quite intriguing and sad, Omozi is an important watch.

Best Christian Nollywood movies of 2023

Recitation follows Blessing, a young girl who has to dodge a lot of “God, abeg” situations in her quest to live a godly life. Faced with temptation from her peers and society, Blessing resolves to stay steadfast in her faith, relying on the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

    Enoch

This film is inspired by the life of Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). It reveals the circumstances of his birth and childhood, how he became a genius mathematician, found Christ through his future wife and how God called him to ministry. Enoch was released to mark Pastor Adeboye’s 81st birthday.

    Abejoye

The series finale was released in January, but this is one Christian series you should binge-watch if you’re a huge fan of Mount Zion productions. Written by Mike Bamiloye, the series explores the story of an African traditionalist dad who visits his son abroad and soon realises that he and his wife are struggling Christians with their own secrets.

  • Nollywood Movie Posters Are Now Giving Us Bragging Rights

For the longest time, the saying “Never judge a book by its cover” didn’t quite apply to Nollywood movies because you could, in fact, judge and critique the film, and you wouldn’t even have to go watch it.

But to say the poster game hasn’t come a long way is to deny the significant growth that has enveloped the industry in the last decade.

    A chaotic past

I can’t find a better word to describe past Nollywood movie posters than “sensational”, and to be fair, I get the hustle. We’re talking the late 1990s and early 2000s; the industry was only just picking up. Filmmakers and film consumers didn’t have the luxury of digital streaming platforms. Cinema culture was barely existent in Nigeria, save for occasional viewings at the National Theatre in Lagos.

Aggressive marketing was the only way to sell your movies, and when you narrow in further, you’ll arrive at sensational posters. The average consumer only had access to movies via video club rentals or purchase of cassettes, and much later on, compact discs.

Nollywood Movie Posters Are Now Giving Us Bragging Rights

If you wanted their coins, your poster had to be three things: Flashy, star-studded and with a title that tells 70% of the story. All three factors helped consumers make on-the-spot decisions to rent or buy your film. And boy, did the movie marketers understand the assignment? Let’s take a look at the evidence.

You already know there’s a plane involved and some characters make their last flight to Abuja.

    Let’s get it, Nollywood

It’s 2023, and everything good has come just like the novelist, Sefi Atta, predicted. The budget is bigger, the acting is better, the pictures are cleaner, and the movie posters? Well, how do they say it now, “Seeing is believing”

If there are doubts as to how much growth the industry has had, I raise you the official movie poster for Tunde Kelani’s 2021 biopic, Ayinla.

Nollywood Movie Posters Are Now Giving Us Bragging Rights

A one-man silhouette poster for a movie with a reported production budget of ₦50million? The marketers at 51, Iweka road, Onitsha could never. The movie went on to gross over ₦91 million.

It was a risk on the part of movie executives but also an impressive nod to the designers who’re pushing the needle. Just take a look at these receipts.

Like Kelani, more Nollywood filmmakers have embraced minimalism in their approach to movie posters, and when there’s a need to go loud with a bang, it’s still a far cry from “our chaotic past”.

  • These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

We recently called it and agreed that Nollywood men are doing the Lord’s work, but it’s important to make a second trip to the garden, pluck red roses and hand them to Nollywood actresses.

The industry is evolving like never before, and it’s so gratifying to see talents match up to the flair that made us fall for Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Rita Dominic among others. If you don’t already have the Nollywood actresses on this list on your radar, here’s your call to do so.

Nollywood’s top young actresses in 2023

    Darasimi Nadi

These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

Kayode Kasum’s Obara M stayed with me for many reasons, but one thing I couldn’t quite shake off was Darasimi Nadi’s performance as Ihunanya. Cast alongside veterans like Nkem Owoh and Nancy Isime, the 11-year-old matched their energy head-to-head in a performance that earned her a Best Supporting Actress BFF award. Catch her magic in projects like The Pretty Ones Are the Loneliest, Rough Diamonds and Smokescreen.

    Pamilerin Ayodeji

These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

    Source: Nollywire

Jade Osiberu’s Gang of Lagos introduced us to the talent that is Maleek Sani of Ikorodu Bois, but with him was another rare Nollywood gem — Pamilerin Ayodeji. Pamilerin was cast as Teni, a younger version of Bimbo Ademoye, and the way she ate the role up? I made a quick dash to my Google search console because where is more of this young queen? The Father, Special Friends and most recently, Alone, are some of her other notable works.

    Genoveva Umeh

My first onscreen encounter with Genoveva Umeh was in the Netflix original series, Blood Sisters, where her major standoff with the iconic Kate Henshaw left my mouth gaping. I was hooked, and that singular viewing experience sold me on her ministry. I stumbled on Genoveva again in Netflix’s young adult series, Far From Home, and I knew this was one queen out to make her mark. She’s since landed roles in a 2023 season of MTV Shuga and the Amazon Prime original film, Breath of Life.

    Eyiyemi Afolayan

These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

Filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, took the decision to cast his first daughter, Eyiyemi, because “she’s beautiful and a natural at acting”, and honestly, we get it. Her debut as Princess Omowunmi on Anikulapo was a hit that had Twitter NG asking for the neck of her character. She’s among the Nollywood actresses making a bigger comeback in 2023.

    Diane Russet

These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

During her time in the BBNaija house, Diane Russet was vocal about her gospel of dominating Nollywood. It might have taken a while to get our attention, but she’s gradually getting there, especially with her slate of YouTube shorts Bayi, Therapist and Storm. She featured in Jade Osiberu’s Brotherhood and executive produced her own Africa Magic show, Ricordi. We know there’s more she brings to the table, and we hope Nollywood is paying attention.

    Next rated OGs of 2023

    Uzoamaka Aninoh

Uzoamaka Aninoh had us taking notes on her performance in shows like MTV Shuga and Africa Magic’s Venge. But she went on to show her level of depth and range in Showmax’s Diiche, the Domitilla reboot and Dika Ofoma’s short, A Quiet Monday. With CJ Obasi’s Mami Wata set to release soon, we know we’ll get another taste of her medicine, and we can’t wait.

    Bimbo Ademoye

Bimbo Ademoye has been at it for a while, and it’s beautiful to see the actress getting all the flowers that should’ve been in her garden for a long time. But they’re there now, and we can’t complain. Cast as Arolake in Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo, and set to make a return in the 2023 series, Anikulapo: Rise of the Specter, her efforts are finally paying off. Beyond a bigger 2023, Bimbo is one of the Nollywood actresses that has staying power.

    Elma Mbadiwe

These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

Elma Mbadiwe first popped up on my radar after I watched her in the short film, Without You. Later on, she’d show up on my screen in Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story, Ndani TV’s F.O.MO. and Rumour Has It, and at first, I thought, “Okay, work rate is super.” I was finally sold on her ministry when she played Carmen in Netflix’s first Nigerian young adult series, Far From Home, and I instantly added her to my “Watch out for this star” list.

    Meg Otanwa

Meg Otanwa has been at it since 2011, but she didn’t quite stick in the minds of the Nigerian audience until 2022, when she showed up and showed off in Damilola Orimogunje’s film, For Maria Ebun Pataki. The movie was about postpartum depression, and Otanwa was more than perfect to drive the serious message home. Her performance reminded us of her previous roles in films like October 1, Before 30 and Atlanta. Otanwa has all it takes to raise shoulder with our OG Nollywood actresses.

    Efe Irele

These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

Efe Irele has had pockets of big moments in Nollywood but none quite come close to her riveting performance as Bianca in Niyi Akinmolayan’s steamy rom-com, Hey You! What could have made for cringe television had the audience delighted, especially her steamy scenes with resident Nollywood bad boy, Timini Egbuson. Efe bagged her first AMVCA in May 2023, for her role as Theresa in Izu Ojukwu’s period film, Four Four, Forty Four, and made a titillating return in Akinmolayan’s latest, House of Secrets. We love the exciting run for her.

Top-rated veteran Nollywood actresses of 2023

    Sola Sobowale

Kemi Adetiba dragged mummy Sola Sobowale back to the shores of Nigeria in 2016 to play Tinuade Coker in Ebonylife’s The Wedding Party. Two years later, Adetiba cast the iconic actress as Eniola Salami, the lead in her political thriller, King of Boys, and there’s been no greater career run like Sola’s since then. Sobowale’s character interpretation shocked her to the core and even drove her to watch a film she’d featured in for the first time. In 2022, she flexed on us with her role as Awarun in Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo, and we’ve just accepted that she’s back for a long time.

    Kehinde Bankole

In June 2023, for the first time in a long while, I watched Twitter NG collectively agree on one thing: Give Kehinde Bankole her flowers. We knew she was a leading woman in Nollywood, but we needed Biodun Stephen’s Sista to remind us just how iconic the Kehinde Bankole of SuperStory, The Set Up and Tainted Canvas is. She’s poised to have an even louder applause with her portrayal of Olufunmi Ransome Kuti in Bolanle Austen Peters’s upcoming biopic.

    Najite Dede

Najite Dede has been around since the days of The Governor (2017), Riona (2020) and Gidi Up (2012), but we needed Niyi Akinmolayan’s House of Secret to show us her level of depth and star power as a Nollywood screen icon. Najite’s class-act performance in the psychological thriller has laid the foundation for an exciting 2023 for the actress.

    Kate Henshaw

It’s been over one year since Blood Sisters debuted on Netflix, and I still get flashbacks of Kate Henshaw’s performance as Uduak Ademola; the emotionally-wrought mum who gave zero shits for her daughter but would kill for her son. If anything, that role was a stark reminder of what Henshaw brings to the table of iconic screen goddesses in Nollywood. Seven months into 2023, we’ve seen more of her as Mrs Eket in Niyi Akinmolayan’s House of Secret, and we know she still has more up her sleeves.

  • Eniola Badmus vs TikToker Who Bagged 3-Year Jail Term Over Defamation Charges

A Nigerian TikToker has bagged a three-year jail term for cyberstalking and defaming Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus. Here’s all we know about the lawsuit:

    How did it all start?

On July 19, 2023, a Nigerian lady identified as Nwakaego “Ego” Blessing Okoye filmed a TikTok video, levelling several allegations against Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus.

Ego claimed that in January 2023, she was out with a friend when the actress saw them and asked to have a private audience with her friend. Ego said she knew Eniola was interested in her friend because of her shape. She alleged that the actress took her friend’s number and stated she “had a chairman for her”. Ego asked her friend why she didn’t inform the actress that she was engaged and about to be wed. According to Ego, her friend claimed she wanted to hear what Eniola had to say.

The TikToker labelled Eniola a “professional pimp”, adding that the actress used to sleep around with politicians but was now outsourcing since she’s gotten older. Ego’s TikTok video went viral that same day, with thousands of internet users feeding into her allegations and making more defamatory remarks about the actress.

    Eniola Badmus’s reaction

Badmus shared an Instagram post on the same July 19, urging people to “thread carefully”, adding that she wouldn’t listen to “please” if she gets a hold of the lady behind the allegation.

Eniola Badmus vs TikToker Who Bagged 3-Year Jail Term Over Defamation Charges

    Eniola Badmus involves the police

On Saturday, July 22, three days after the viral video dropped, Ego sent out a distress call via a video she shared online, revealing that police officers had arrived at her residence.

“I’m in serious soup. Eniola Badmus has called the police. They’re at my door. They want to break in. I’m in serious problem. You guys, I need help. They want to break my door.”

Shortly after the distress call went out, Eniola shared a video on her Snapchat page, letting the world know that the police had finally arrested Ego. In the video, a remorseful Ego was seen apologising to Eniola. The actress asked why she defamed her and strongly noted that “sorry” won’t cut it.

“You can’t be sorry. We dey go court.”

Ego admitted to the police that the allegations against the actress were completely false. According to her, a male friend called Fortune Ibe, promised her the sum of ₦200,000 to make the defamatory video about the actress. Ego claimed the friend made the offer after she told him she needed money to pay for her house rent.

She proceeded to apologise to Eniola, noting that everything she said was a lie, and she was only desperate for money to pay her rent.

“I personally sent her a message” — Eniola Badmus

During an Instagram Live interview with media personality, Daddy Freeze, on July 24, Eniola claimed she sent a message to Ego expressing her concerns about the video and urging her to take it down. According to her, Ego told her to “shut up”.

The actress said Ego’s response forced her to take the matter up with her lawyer who submitted a petition and moved the matter to court.

Will Ego really spend three years in jail?

On Tuesday, August 2, a Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Nwakaego Okoye to three years imprisonment for cyberstalking Eniola Badmus.

Justice Nichola Oweibo convicted Ego after she pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of cyberstalking. However, following the convict’s show of remorse, Justice Oweibo gave Ego an option to pay a fine of ₦150,000 in lieu of jail time.

In an Instagram post shared hours after the court’s ruling, Eniola stressed the importance of letting people live their lives without castigating them for it. She mentioned her hurtful experiences during her weight loss journey and how she’s also been subjected to cyberbullying because of her political choices.

According to her, the hateful comments hurt and sometimes “you truly and really want to set an example.” She added, ”While freedom of speech is a fundamental right, I think it should be exercised responsibly and with consideration for the potential harm it may cause.”

  • If You Put Your Trust in These Nollywood Characters, Sorry To You

With Nollywood, you almost never know what to expect, except, of course, when it comes to their leads. They go through trials and tribulations and come out the other side sparkling new, until life happens and you start second-guessing everything you know about them.

    The Band of Merry Men

They might have good intentions, but still, it’s four men in their late 30s cosplaying Robin Hood. What if they’re keeping some of the money they steal from corrupt politicians? What if their entire operation is a massive money laundering scheme? Think about it.

Eniola Salami in King of boys

You might want to argue, but you can only ever trust Alhaja Eniola Salami to an extent. What if she needs you out of the way to get to her goal? What if you make one little mistake that upsets her? What if someone lies on your head, and she wants to use you as a scapegoat? The questions are endless, and that means anyone that works with her might continue looking over their shoulder till it happens.

    Sarah in Blood Sisters

Honestly, you should only trust Sarah if she doesn’t know a damning secret about you If you mistakenly put your life in her hands, there’s a big chance she’ll give away all your important information and leave you scrambling for safety.

    Femi Beecroft in Chief Daddy

Why anyone would take a look at Famzy money and thing he’s to be trusted is beyond us. You might think you’re his friend, but that man would sell you and your family members if it means he’ll get money for his music career. He’ll probably do it by mistake too, which is like a million times worse.

    Ifebuchi in Soole

None of the people on that bus were trustworthy, but special mention goes to the man that had jazz all along, only revealed it at the last minute only to disappear with the money everyone put their life on the line for.  Yes, he later sent everyone’s share , but why did he  wait that long?

    Ishaya in Far From Home

Anyone that says they trust Ishaya obviously doesn’t like themselves very much. After he makes the worst decisions and you somehow survive it, he’d come back to ask for your forgiveness.

    Tayo in The Men’s Club

We understand that his first marriage wasn’t exactly the happiest, but you can’t deny that he has problems being alone, and that means he’s almost always in multiple relationships at once. Maybe he’s changed now that he’s found love, but Tiara should give him like a quarter of her trust and save the rest for a rainy day.

  • What to Expect As Kunle Afolayan Wraps Filming for Anikulapo Series

It’s been over nine months since we last heard from Saro and Arolake, but that’s about to change and we’re mad excited.

Filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, finally wrapped up filming on the set of a four-part Netflix series, which takes a deeper dive into the Anikulapo-verse as we’ve come to know it. Afolayan has been generous with the behind-the-scenes content and we’re grateful. While we await the official release, here’s all we’ve gleaned from the director’s social media pages.

First, a recap of where we left Saro and Arolake

Afolayan left us with a wicked cliffhanger where we see a beat-up Saro who seemed to have escaped the wrath of the Ojumo people, after failing to bring the crown prince back to life.  Recall that his malicious treatment of Arolake and insistence on marrying the princess of Ojumo Kingdom in exchange for bringing the prince back to life, caused her (Arolake) to leave.

But before leaving Saro, she empties the content of the pouch she took from the mythical Akala bird. On the mountaintop, the Akala bird returns and a seemingly unconscious Saro is jerked to life. What do we know so far?

    An extended cast

Anikulapo The Series is poised to be bigger and packed with more action hence the reason for a more star-studded cast. Some of the new faces include:

Some old cast members also make a return to the series, including Arolake (Bimbo Ademoye) and Saro (Kunle Remi).

    Bimbo Ademoye (Arolake)

    Kunle Remi (Saro)

    Aisha Lawal (Olori Sunkanmi)

    A new lover for Arolake?

What to Expect As Kunle Afolayan Wraps Filming for Anikulapo Series

Remember that Arolake left Saro in Ojumo village after she couldn’t take his mistreatment anymore. Well, it looks like she’s going to find love again in the series, and her lucky man is Gabriel Afolayan. This picture looks like Kunle giving some directions for a couple’s scene.

    Princess Omowunmi finds love?

What to Expect As Kunle Afolayan Wraps Filming for Anikulapo Series

In the movie, Princess Omowunmi fell in love with Saro from the moment he first visited the palace. But Saro only had his eyes on the king’s youngest wife, Olori Arolake. A jealous Omowunmi discovered Saro and Arolake’s affair and their plan to elope from the village. She ruined the plan by telling her mother, who reported the matter to the king.

It seems Princess Omowunmi might have her own lover  (Lateef Adedimeji) in the series.

We have our fingers crossed as the Anikulapo series now moves to post-production before an official release date is announced.

  • First Half of 2023: These Are The Best Serves From Nollywood

According to the Department of Film Censorship and Classification, Nollywood has produced only 280 movies in the first quarter of 2023. Quite a drastic reduction for a film industry that releases movies like NEPA withholds light. We weren’t the world’s second largest film producer for nothing.

There’s more focus on improving quality and reducing output now — we’ve been blown away, thrilled and dipped in all sorts of emotions due to the highly impressive movies Nollywood has produced in 2023 — full-length and short films, these are the best ones so far.

    Gangs of Lagos

If you’re looking for an original Nigerian  crime and thriller flick, this is the one for you. It’s in the same collection with the likes of Saworoide, King of Boys and others with underlining of social commentary. You’re in for a story about family, loyalty, leadership and filled with packed action. Hope the sight of blood and gang activities won’t scare you away sha?

    The Trade

Inspired by true events; a tale of greed and terror. As the story unfolds, we witness the high-stakes game of cat and mouse, set in Lagos, between a determined law enforcement officer and a cunning kidnapper terrorizing the Southern parts of Nigeria. Word on the street is The Trade is a movie adaptation of a popular Nigerian kidnapper who was arrested in 2017.

There are no lacklustre fight scenes, just intense suspense, believable Naija violence and a gripping story. The film earns Blossom Chukwujekwu a top contender spot for best actor of 2023.

    Sista

    https://youtu.be/LhDCxb3z4k0

This movie made me shed a few gangsta tears when I watched it. A single mom zealously fights for her two kids when their deadbeat dad tries to win them over after being absent in their lives. Using his wealth and influence to entice the children instead of seeking penance and establishing connection with them, their furious mother swings into action to detach them from a man who never loved them in the first place.

The acting performances by our faves like Kehinde Bankole, Deyemi Okanlawon, Bisola Aiyeola, etc. were striking. Many people say it’s the best Nigerian film they’ve seen in a while.

    Love In A Pandemic

In 2020, COVID-19 shut down everywhere and kept us in our homes. Even though the lockdown curbed our movements, it didn’t stop some people from finding true love. Bolanle (Nancy Isime), in an attempt to apologise to her boyfriend about a fight , dialled a wrong number belonging to Alex (Deyemi Okanlawon). The call to a stranger becomes a routine and feelings get involved but the pandemic is in their way. If you need something to convince you that your boyfriend shouldn’t stop you from meeting your true love, Love In A Pandemic is the answer.

    Boy Meets Girl

This experimental short film closely follows Musa, a 15 year old lad who had a terrifying, life-changing experience with a young girl on a bus. Boy Meets Girl is filled with undertones of the abducted Chibok Girls, underperforming government and failed security system. Shooting the movie in Gamboru, Borno State, feels intentional and noteworthy, hitting too close to home. You can’t miss out on this one.

    Nkemakonam

Nkemakonam has an incredible storyline and captivating themes of motherhood, premarital pregnancy and castigation, creating more conversations around this common issue that has minimal social awareness. A young girl is cast aside by her community after getting pregnant, leading her to deliver her baby herself. This is one of the best Nollywood productions so far this year, the acting, pacing and cinematography are nothing short of amazing.

    Omozi

In a bid to japa from Nigeria to Belgium and give herself and her daughter a better life, Omozi falls into the trap of human traffickers. The people she was supposed to link with and travel together turned out to be the traffickers, shipping her to Malaysia and Joyful, her little daughter to Libya. Although quite intriguing and sad, Omozi is an important watch.

  • Which of these Old Nollywood Soundtracks Do You Remember?

Before singles by artists became popular in Nollywood, theme songs were the real deal. And we couldn’t help but sing along to them when they were used in films and TV shows.

Soundtracks were used in Nollywood as a narration device for stories, complementing scenes with focused lyrics. Though soundtrack songwriters and performers were not as popular as other players in the movie industry, their contribution is undisputed. We bring you some old Nollywood soundtracks that are evergreen. Which ones do you remember?

    Karishika (Queen of Demons)

The plot of Karishika, in usual Nollywood fashion, is about a battle between darkness and light. Karishika came out in 1996 and still remains one of the industry’s biggest horror flicks. Bianca’s naivety or Karishika and Jonathan’s evil doings may make you cringe, but the bouncy, melodious “lucifer, lucifer, prince of darkness, Karishika, Karishika, queen of demons” soundtrack made by singer-songwriter Stanley Okorie, still sends chills down my back. It sounds like something Cruel Santino would make.

    Chain Reaction

In simple lyrics, Stanley Okorie — whose name you’ll see more than twice in this article, performed the gloomy soundtrack. “Chain Reaction” came out in 1999 and its cast boasts of established names like Pete Edochie, Onyeka Onwenu, Liz Benson, Klint Da Drunk. The soundtrack warned “in this life you reap what you sow,” but the movie’s antagonist, Eucharia (Liz Benson), still didn’t get exactly what she deserved.

    Nneka the Pretty Serpent

A horror-mystery film from Nollywood that dates back to 1994, written and directed by Zeb Ejiro. Millennials regard it as one of the best horror films from old Nollywood. The classic Nneka the Pretty Serpent‘s soundtrack was composed by Mike Nliam, performed by Mike and Doris Madu, and produced by Kingsley Ogoro. The mellow soundtrack is one of one. You’re instantly reminded of the old movie that sent morbid fear into your 12-year old self.

    Final Whistle

    https://youtu.be/xwMzpvfMKf0

Back in the good old days when the barber’s shop was the Netflix we knew, this romance starring Nollywood OG bad boy, Saint Obi (of blessed memory), was a fav.

Saint Obi played Richard, a rich guy who fell in love with Fina (Rita Nwankwo), his mum’s housemaid. “Final Whistle” was a commercial success, thanks to its soundtrack. In the 2000 Nollywood production, we saw Richard and his babe Fina become R&B singers, singing to each other at sea, promising to never separate. We know you probably played it over and over as a kid because you wanted what they had when you grew up. Do you still want that Richard and Fina love?

    Koto Aye and Koto Orun

It’s not in every movie you’d see a king pregnant with a bird. This Nollywood horror movie shows a village and its people suffering from the wickedness of witches who loudly chant what turns out to be the movie’s soundtrack. The Nollywood film got the most attention from 1989 to 1992, but even over a decade after, the youngins still watch it. The soundtrack is still as gripping as when it was first created.

    The Campus Queen

This was definitely one of the coolest movies from old Nollywood. The Campus Queen, directed by Veteran director and producer Tunde Kelani, follows the story of a young lady Banke on her university adventure. The movie has a great cast of actors, including the late Sound Sultan who was also in charge of the movie’s soundtrack. On the official single, Sound Sultan, Faze and El-Dee were seen trying to impress the Campus Queen with their music.

    The Master

Coincidentally, Yahooze by Olu Maintain came out a year before The Master was produced. The former was a viral hit song that exalted cyber-fraud culture. The latter is a story of a 419 scammer who became a master of the craft, but everything went crashing down when he refused to pay dues to the person who taught him.

The soundtrack, written by Stanley Okorie and performed by the lead actor Nkem Owoh is definitely one of the most popular soundtracks in Nollywood ever. It’s hard to not sing along when you hear:

    “If anybody fall mugu

    My brother, I go chop

National airport, na me get am

National stadium, na me build am”
