  • 8 Upcoming Nollywood Titles to Anticipate in 2024

Nollywood 2023 brought us blockbusters like A Tribe Called Judah, Jagun Jagun, The Black Book and Gangs of Lagos. Three weeks into 2024, you may be wondering if Nollywood has plans to shatter its own records. We did a little snooping, and with these titles on the lineup, there’s no doubt our movie industry is up to the task.

Question is, are you ready for this?

    “Casa De Novia”

After an impressive outing with The House of Secrets and Mikolo in 2023, director, Niyi Akinmolayan, and his production house, Anthill Studios, are making an even bigger comeback in 2024 with Casa De Novia

We don’t know what the storyline is just yet, but the teaser features Small Talk actor, Taye Arimoro, cosplaying as a ghost in a magic mirror. Casa de Novia is heading straight to Prime Video, starring Lilian Esoro, Efe Irele and Tope Tedela, among others.

    “Oloture” series

Ebonylife has revisited its critically acclaimed 2019 drama, Oloture, for a series set to drop on Netflix sometime this year. Post production is ongoing, and some familiar faces make a return to the series. Sharon Ooja reprises her role as Ehi (an undercover journalist), while Bucci Franklin and Stan Nze join as new cast members.

    “A Better Man”

Nollywood will have its fair share of sappy romance this year, and Uche Jombo is championing this. The Nollywood actress and her production house, Uche Jombo Studios, are heading to the big screen with A Better Man, featuring Daniel Etim Effiong, Elvina Ibru, Tana Adelana and Tina Mba, among others. According to Jombo, the romantic drama “tells the story of Ogechi and Dayo in a stranger-than-fiction romantic whirlwind”. Hopefully, the release will be in time for Valentine’s Day.

    “Finding Messiah”

Kemi Adetiba has been more than vocal about her husband, Oscar Heman-Ackah’s directorial debut, Finding Messiah. So far, we’ve seen an otherworldly set, costumes similar to the ones we saw in Black Panther’s Wakanda and the OGs: Pete Edochie, Alex Usifo and Taiwo Ajai-Lycett. The political epic is set in the fictional Republic of Zambay.

Principal photography wrapped in December but major details about its plot and release are still unknown.

“I Do Not Come To You By Chance”

It’s no longer news that Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani’s award-winning 2009 debut book, “I Do Come To You By Chance” has been made into a movie, and the iconic Genevieve Nnaji executive produced it. AFRIFF 2023 attendees have already got a taste of what the Ishaya Bako-directed title offers, but the rest of us will have to find out when it comes to cinemas this year. Paul Nnadiekwe, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Jennifer Eliogu, Sambasa Nzeribe and Beverly Osu are the major stars in the cast.

    “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre”

Kunle Afolayan wrapped up filming for this four-part series in 2023 and teased fans with BTS photos of what will be a spin-off of the acclaimed Nollywood epic, Anikulapo. The series will premiere on Netflix. New cast members Layi Wasabi and Gabriel Afolayan will join Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale, among others.

    “Onyegwu”

Uche Jombo means business with her filmmaking in 2024. Premiering this sports drama at AFRIFF 2023, she’s set to release it later this year. Zubby Michael plays the lead character, Alex, who goes spiritual to reclaim his spot in the world of football. Chioma Akpotha, Emeka Nwagbaraocha, Nancy Isime and Lateef Adedimeji, also feature in the movie.

Which of these actors was not in “A Trip To Jamaica”?

  • If you prowl these Nigerian Internet streets like I do, or even just watch TV, you’ve probably heard about/seen Lara And The Beat.

    Here’s the trailer!

Personally, from the trailer alone, I really want to watch this.

    I mean, I have a few questions…

    Why so beautiful

Seyi Shay and Vector Tha Viper star in this movie. These are two of our music industry’s most attractive people right now, so ONE TICKET PLEASE! Like, everyone in the cast is gorgeous!

Apart from Vector making our hearts go gbim-gbim in this movie, I have another question:

He can act??? Wawuu… I hope I’ll even be able to focus on the movie and not his smile or his- *clears throat*

It’s really looks like a beautiful, dreamy story

Did you see those outfits and locations, lighting and the beautiful faces?! Even the storyline seems like one of those type stories that leaves you wishfully smiling all through.

    Chinedu Ikedieze

I will watch anything that Chinedu Ikedieze acts in, plain and simple. Plus, that slap!

What the hell was that song that Seyi Shay was singing loool?

This is like the most important question to me, to be honest. Whattt???

    The quality looks really good!

From the shots and a cast of powerhouses like Chioma Akoptha, Uche Jombo, Chinedu Ikedieze, Wale Ojo and so many more, at least I know that I will get quality!

This is a very feel-good movie but it doesn’t feel dead. Might there be something to learn here?

Anyhow sha, it’s the weekend, so let me go and check out what’s really going on with Ms. Lara Giwa.
Who’s going to see Lara And The Beat? Let me know what you guys think about it!

Nollywood keeps getting better and has been serving even more awesome movies. These days, the industry is impressing us with movies that tackle social issues in Nigeria.

In this forthcoming movie, The Arbitration, office affairs and rape were defined and heavily highlighted.

The Arbitration takes us through the romantic affair between Gbenga, played by O.C Ukeje, and his employee, Dara, played by the award-winning Adesua Etomi.

However, things go south when Dara sues Gbenga for rape shortly after her resignation from the company.

  • Watch The Trailer Of 93 Days: An Amazing Nollywood Movie About The 2014 Ebola Outbreak
When the Ebola virus broke out across West Africa in 2014 , it left an unforgettable mark especially in Nigeria.

The haemorrhagic fever which causes death of most of its victims was first recorded when a Liberian-American diplomat, Patrick Sawyer, collapsed at the Murtala Mohammed airport during a trip to Nigeria.

He was checked into First Consultant Medical Centre, where his Ebola status was confirmed under the supervision of Dr Ameyo Adedavoh, who eventually died of the disease during the process.

Delivering a powerful performance, Bimbo Akintola, who acts as the female consultant who contacted the government after discovering Patrick Sawyer was infected with the virus.

  • A British Actress Will Star In A Nollywood Movie Because She can Speak Pidgin English
It’s about time Nigerians start appreciating the beauty of our culture.  Nigerians continue to slay at home and especially abroad, why? Because even in the midst of so much wahala, greatness still runs in our blood. But let’s just get to the gist.

This British comedienne and actress just got featured in her first Nollywood movie.

For those of you who don’t know her, she’s Claire Edun aka Oyinbo Princess, famous for her pidgin speaking skills.

Claire who was born and raised in the UK fell in love with Nigeria after listening to several Nigerian songs.

The former air hostess is married to a Nigerian man, Richard Edun, and is popular for her comedy videos.

Her ability to speak pidgin landed her a role in a Nollywood movie titled ATM, produced by Lancelot Imaseun.

It’s great to see a foreigner take so much interest in Nigerian culture. But let’s remember one or two things…

When Nigerians speak English with an American or British accent, people say they’re forming.

Speaking pidgin on a normal day is razz but when a foreigner speaks pidgin, Nigerians be like…

As Nigerians, we need to learn to love our culture and stop waiting for others to do the appreciation for us.
