  • What We Know About Mr Ibu’s Health and How You Can Help

Veteran Nollywood actor Mr Ibu recently released a video seeking financial aid for an undisclosed ailment. However, the family recently announced that his leg was amputated to keep him alive.

Here’s all we know about the situation so far.

What We Know About Mr Ibu’s Health and How You Can Help

    What is happening?

Nigerian actor, John Okafor, AKA Mr Ibu is currently on admission at a medical hospital in Lagos.

On Wednesday, October 18, Mr Ibu released a video on his official Instagram page soliciting financial aid for a medical condition.  He revealed that doctors had informed him of the possibility of getting one of his legs amputated.

A history of Mr Ibu’s condition

While the actor’s recent medical situation has stirred concern from fans and fellow Nigerians, this is not the first time he has been ill.

Mr Ibu’s adopted daughter, Lady Jasmine, first drew attention to the actor’s health in March 2022 after he landed in the hospital.

Although the exact diagnosis was not revealed to the public, the actor was on admitted for several days at the Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre in Abuja.

At the time, industry colleagues, including Monalisa Chinda, who was the PRO of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) paid a courtesy visit to the actor at the hospital.

In an interview after he was discharged, Mr Ibu claimed he was poisoned, hence his admission to the hospital.

“I was poisoned, but not at an entertainment event in Abuja. I was poisoned in my home town, and then I journeyed to Abuja, where the poison affected me and grounded me. At a point, I almost gave up, but God said, ‘No, you are not going to give up. And here I am. I have been discharged.’”

The actor was admitted again by May 2022, spending his wedding anniversary with his wife at the hospital. However, by June 2022, he was out of the hospital and started showing signs of recovery.

Mr Ibu resumed on movie sets, started making more appearances on social media and even featured in comedy skits.

In September 2023, the actor celebrated his 40 years on screen with many colleagues and well-wishers joining him to mark the occasion. Unfortunately, his health seemed to take another hit shortly after the event.

    What are colleagues doing?

Shortly after his call for help, several colleagues in the entertainment industry have used their platforms to amplify Mr Ibu’s plight.

Veteran actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo released a video urging fellow industry colleagues and kindhearted Nigerians to donate towards Mr Ibu’s medical aid.

He, however, clamped down on author, Reno Omokri, who had shared a tweet emphasising Ibu’s support of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the general elections. Omokri claimed the actor joined others to raise funds for Obi as such the politician should return the favour.

Meanwhile, celebrities like Davido, Tunde Ednut, and Paul Okoye amongst others have rallied support for the ailing actor and promised to do their bit.

    Mr Ibu’s leg amputated

On November 5, 2023, Mr Ibu’s adopted daughter, Lady Jasmine, shared an update about his health on behalf of the family.

According to her, the actor successfully had seven surgeries. Unfortunately, one of his legs had to be amputated.

“As of 1 p.m., noon today, Daddy has gone through 7 successful surgeries but to keep him alive and increase his chances of recovery one of his legs had to be amputated. This development has been hard on us all but we’ve had to accept it as Daddy’s new reality to keep him alive.”

What can you do to help?

In a video, Mr Ibu explained the doctors have informed him of the possibility of amputation if efforts to remedy his condition prove futile. The actor pleaded with members of the public to support him with prayers.

Now that his leg has been amputated, the family is still calling on kindhearted Nigerians for financial support.

“Please we are still soliciting support from well-meaning Nigerians at this stage,” the actor’s daughter wrote.

The actor’s bank account details have been made available for members of the public willing to donate towards his well-being. A direct mobile number has also been provided for members of the public.

    How are Nigerians reacting?

Many Nigerians who grew up watching the iconic actor are saddened by the news of Mr Ibu’s predicament and have wished him well.

  • You Should Totally Binge-watch These Murphy Afolabi Movies

The late Murphy Afolabi brought a zest to his roles in Yoruba movies that left a lasting impression on viewers. Whether as a chaotic Nigerian policeman or randy lover boy, he always ate and left no crumbs.

Afolabi might be gone, but his indelible mark in Nollywood won’t be forgotten easily, and these movies are proof.

Olokiki Oru: The Midnight Sensation (2019)

Released in 2019, the Seun Olaiya-directed epic tells the story of two famed armed robbers who terrorised Yoruba towns following the fall of the Oyo Empire. Murphy Afolabi shone in his role as Opele, beside skilled actors like Ibrahim Chatta and Lateef Adedimeji.

    One Blood (2016)

    Murphy Afolabi

Shot in Malaysia and Nigeria, the Abbey Abimbola-directed action flick mirrors racism and gangsterism within the black community in Malaysia. Afolabi played Jordan, one of the gangsters, alongside Kolawole Ajeyemi and Akinyemi Olaiya.

    Wasila Coded Reloaded (2022)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV8jYdwqJbc

Afolabi tried his hands at directing in this action-packed Yoruba film. Ousted from a transport union over a misdemeanour, Wasila (Adebimpe Akintunde) joins a notorious gang. Afolabi plays Olasunkanmi alongside Jide Kosoko, Segun Arinze and Fathia Balogun.

    Basira Badia (2016)

Another Yoruba action flick directed by Afolabi, Basira Badia is a story inspired by real-life events that happened in Ijora Badia (a suburb in Lagos). Afolabi plays Kenny, the leader of a street gang. The movie features Fathia Williams, Fausat Balogun and Eniola Iyiola.

    Oshun, the Goddess (2018)

    Murphy Afolabi

Afolabi features in this Ade Eketunde-directed epic alongside Femi Branch and Fathia Williams Balogun. Although the film is about the Oshun goddess, it also explores the fight against violence and abuse towards women.

    Four Lions (2022)

Afolabi teams up with Kelvin Ikeduba, Ibrahim Yekini and Ibrahim Bashir for this action-packed Yoruba film. Four dreadful armed robbers, backed by a spiritual father, terrorise a community until they have a heated faceoff with the police. This is another production he directed himself.

    Abiku (2022)

Months before his demise, Afolabi actively promoted this movie on his socials. He featured in and directed the film before releasing it on YouTube. In it, Afolabi plays a spiritual being whose soul was tethered to an “abiku” (a child predestined to die).

  • Chidi Mokeme Was Fire: Let’s Try These OG Nollywood Actors Next

The only people who were surprised by Chidi Mokeme’s flawless rendition of Scar in Shanty Town are those who never watched Nollywood before Netflix Naija.

Here are some other great actors we’d like to see grace our screens next:

    Emeka Ike

We can’t trust anyone who grew up without watching an Emeka Ike movie. Gen Zs, we feel sorry for you. I mean, you missed out on Endless Love, Not Man Enough, My Last Wedding? Let’s not even get started on the tear-jerking A Million Tears. From arrogant rich boy to university cultist, village pauper and hopeless romantic, Emeka Ike had range.

    Saint Obi

Who else was today years old when they found out Saint Obi’s real name is Obinna Nwafor? Well, Saint or no Saint, he embodied every role he was given. The next time there’s a movie about a staunch detective or fearless rebel, we hope the directors reach out to him.

    Stephanie Okereke Linus

Before Nancy Isime and Ini Dima- Okojie, we had Stephanie Okereke. She ruled romance and romcoms, but she also showed strength in drama films like Sitanda and Dry.

    Nkiru Slyvanus

She didn’t just give her blood, sweat and tearsss for her roles in movies like A Cry for Help, Secret Pain, and the iconic Egg of Life, she taught us that it’s okay to cry. And honestly, we refuse to allow her tears end in the past.

RELATED: What She Said: I Still Cry Every Time I Have to Eat

    Gentle Jack

There was nothing gentle about Gentle Jack in the roles he was given. You’d find our Nigerian Rambo in any action movie involving fights, gang activities and evil forest business. If Dwayne Johnson can still get all the roles in 2023, we don’t see why Nollywood directors aren’t calling GJ back-to-back.

    Stella Damasus

Nollywood’s sweetheart, Stella’s on-screen chemistry with RMD and Ramsey Nouah alone was worth swooning over. If that’s the only thing we get to see one more time, we will take it for a chance to have her back on our screens.

    Tony Umez

Dorling, hear us out. Sure, Tony was always given roles that made him act like a mumu for love, but his delivery was flawless. If not, he’d not have had such a lasting effect. With a better storyline and director, we’re positive he’d shine.

RELATED: How To Be A Nollywood Lover Boy

    Hank Anuku

Our favourite thing about Hank Anuku was his voice. His deep baritone sent chills down your spines. He pulled off the villain roles so easily, it was hard to separate the character from the person.

    Shan George

Shan George was the IJGB, American-accented, rich kid we all wanted to be. A bad bitch in her own right in movies like High Street Girls and Master Stroke, we give new Nollywood 24 hours to cast her.

    Van Vicker

Before you argue that he’s a Ghanaian actor, let’s be for real, Nollywood basically carried his career. Nigerian girls had his pictures in their rooms, and young boys wanted to be him. We need to witness the beauty that is his acting one more time.

    Bonus point: Desmond Elliot

Do we care for Desmond Elliot? No. But maybe he could bring his clowning away from the government office to where it’d actually be appreciated.

  • 5 Nollywood Actors Who Actually Made Pretty Good Songs

A lot of us witnessed the era when many Nollywood actors decided to try their hands at music for some reason. A LOT of them sucked at it and we all made jokes (Hi, Jim), but there were others who actually made fire bops we all still bump to till this day.

    1) Genevieve Nnaji

This song is a feminist anthem (and a lowkey bop) but we all didn’t notice because we were too busy clowning the insane early 2000s vibes/fashion featured in the music video.

    2) Omotola Jalede-Ekeinde

This was yet another case of Nigerians not being able to see past the music video featuring batshit early 2000s fashion, insane set pieces, Omotola’s struggle dance steps, and a clown for some reason. The song is a legit bop.

    3) Nkem Owoh

This song might’ve been banned by the EFFC for its subject matter (and might’ve resulted in Nkem Owoh being arrested by the Dutch police on suspicion of lottery fraud and immigration violations) but real ones still bump this fuego bop to this day.

    4) Patience Ozokwor

The Nollywood queen of wickedness (under the stage name, Mama Gee) gave us this eternal bop that doubled as her manifesto for if she ever becomes president. Everyone getting their own share of the national cake/moimoi? That’s a movement we should all get behind.

    5) Tonto Dikeh

If you’ve listened to any of Tonto’s songs (yes, she has more than one) and are wondering why she’s on this list, it’s because she’s the queen of making music that falls into the “so bad, it’s good” category. Her first (terrible) hit single was titled “Hi”. Go listen to it if you haven’t and thank me later.

RECOMMENDED: 5 Movie Clips That Capture The Hilarious Insanity Of Old Nollywood

  • Nollywood has come a really long way, and that is greatly due to the amazing work of some iconic actors and actresses. We grew up with these stars, and we absolutely love and appreciate their work. Keeping up with them, we look at where some of them are now.

    Clarion Chukwurah

If you ever watched Nollywood movies back in the day, there’s no way you don’t know the beautiful Clarion Chukwurah. Always playing interesting and daring roles, the award-winning actress who is also the mother of popular music video director Clarence Peters, is currently living her best life in the United States, doing great humanitarian work.

    Richard Mofe-Damijo

Ah, RMD… Nollywood’s Denzel Washington. He’s a handsome award-winning actor and former Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. He’s still acting and on our screens, much to our delight.

    Eucharia Anunobi

You can’t not know Eucharia. Her roles were so daring and exciting! She’s a true screen goddess. The beautiful actress is now a pastor at a church in Egbeda, Lagos.

    Saint Obi

You should know this name, as well as the face. Obinna Nwafor, who is more popularly known as Saint Obi, is one of those Nigerian actors that you just had to look out for back in the day. He was in everything! Lucky for us, even though his main focus now is business, he still graces our screens.

    Liz Benson

Another absolutely beautiful screen goddess, Elizabeth Benson is also a philanthropist, but best of all, she still acts!

    Pete Edochie

Chief Pete Edochie is an award-winning actor, considered one of Africa’s most talented, and one of Nigeria’s favourites, despite his many roles as a wicked/evil man. He has given us many funny quotes and memes, and we absolutely love him! Although he no longer acts like before, we’re quite happy to know that he’s alive and doing well.

    Patience Ozokwor

Patience Ozokwor is a musician, fashion designer, gospel singer and award-winning actress. Like Pete Edochie, she has played a lot of wicked/evil roles, but we still love her like that! She’s an evangelist now, but she still acts, to our great delight. She’s definitely one of Nigeria’s most talented actresses.

    Sam Dede

Sam Dede is an award-winning actor, director, politician and lecturer. He has starred in such iconic movies as Issakaba and Igodo, so you just know that this man was badass back in the day! He is currently a senior lecturer of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt but still acts from time to time, and is doing quite well.

    Regina Askia

When you think of Regina Askia-Williams, I’m sure stunning beauty first comes to mind. An ex-beauty queen, Regina shot to fame as the Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria in 1989, then went on to become an award-winning actress. She is now a family nurse practitioner in the US, a healthcare and educational activist, television producer, writer, and public speaker.

    Zack Orji

Zachee Ama Orji was one of the ultimate baby boys that year. He is an award-winning actor, director, producer and filmmaker, as well as a pastor. He still graces our screens, and is even better than before!
  • He might have an accent because he just came back from the overseas where he lost any form of home training he might have once had

If you are wearing a bandana or durag over your head then you must be wayward

Having dreadlocks or braiding your hair is also a sign that you lack home training

If you are a smoker there’s no redemption for you, you’ve sold your soul to the devil

You and your friends only hang out in uncompleted buildings

You don’t have to carry a gun if you are sagging your trousers you must be an armed robber

You can’t wear dark sunglasses indoors if you do you are a cultist

If you pierce your ears you can never be a child of God

If you wear your cap to the front your parents raised you right but if you were it to the side you are a drug addict

If you wear any kind of jewellery on your neck you must be doing 419

  • 16 Nollywood Actors Reimagined As Game Of Thrones Characters

    1. Nkiru Sylvanus as Sansa Stark

When you think Sansa Stark, you can’t help but think ‘SUFFERING’. Seriously, when your childhood crush kills your father, it can only go downhill from there. So, who better to play the frustrated Stark than the ever-crying Nkiru Sylvanus?

    2. Patience Ozokwor as Cersei Lannister

We all know that Cersei Lannister is next-level wicked and no Nollywood actor can play wickedly protective mother quite like Patience Ozokwor. So, why mess with a formula that works?

    3. Osita Iheme as Tyrion Lannister

What Tyrion lacks in size he makes up for in serious wit, and how many Nollywood actors can claim to have played as many wickedly clever characters as Osita Iheme. It really doesn’t hurt that they are about the same height.

    4. Pete Edochie as Tywin Lannister

Tywin Lannister was the wealthiest man in the seven kingdoms, and one of the wisest. The only difference we can spot between him and Pete Edochie’s typical characters is that while Tywin was just the hand to the king, Pete Edochie would actually be the king.

    5. O.C. Ukeje as Jon Snow

Jon Snow (everyone’s favorite character) is the pretty loverboy with a lot to prove to his family, if you can’t see the charming O.C Ukeje playing this role, we don’t know for you again.

    6. Emeka Ike as Joffrey Baratheon

Joffrey Baratheon was probably the most hated character in television history. He was cowardly, annoying and spoilt, three traits Emeka Ike would really have no trouble playing.

    7. Van Vicker as Jaime Lannister

Jaime Lannister is brave, handsome and more than a little twisted (*side-eye’s incest*).  He isn’t meant to be as likable as he is but he pulls it off, and that is very Van Vicker.

    8. Kanayo O. Kanayo as Stannis Baratheon

Last time we saw Stannis Baratheon he was sacrificing his daughter to the Lord of Light for a chance at the Iron Throne. If that doesn’t scream Kanyo O. Kanayo to you. you really should watch more Nollywood movies.

    9. Nse Ikpe-Etim as Daenerys Targaryen

Daenerys Targaryen is equal parts strong and compassionate, and we can’t think of anyone more suited to the title of “Mother of Dragons” than the enchanting Nse Ikpe-Etim.

    10. Majid Michel as Petyr Baelish

Petyr Baelish is insanely ambitious and extremely cunning, willing to do anything for power. If you’ve ever watched a movie with Majid Michel, you’d know he is the perfect fit.

    11. Mercy Johnson as Lysa Arryn

Lysa Arryn was the overlooked sister of Catelyn Stark and the tremendous Mercy Johson has built a formidable career on playing the ugly duckling.

    12. John Okafor as Lord Varys

Lord Varys is extremely sneaky and occasionally hilarious not unlike John Okafor. It doesn’t hurt that they both have the same size potbellies.

    13. Joseph Benjamin as Robb Stark

We didn’t realize how much we really liked Robb Stark until he was gone and we can’t think of a better actor to capture his quiet intensity.

    14. Olu Jacobs as Ned Stark

Ned Stark’s nobility might have been his undoing in the end but that trait is exactly what Olu Jacobs brings to every character he plays.

    15. Joke Sylva as Catelyn Stark

Catelyn Stark was the strong-willed wife of Ned Stark. So, it’s only right we cast the supremely-talented real life wife of Olu Jacobs.

    16. Jim Iyke as Ramsay Bolton

Which other Nollywood actor can you picture torturing their prisoner into submission beside the sly looking Jim Iyke?
