All You Should Know About Building an Exciting Content Marketing Career

Every week, Zikoko will share the hustle stories of Nigerians making it big in and out of the country. With each story, we’ll ask one crucial question in several ways: “How you do am?”

Who is a content marketer?
Google will likely answer this question in a number of ways, but in summary, a content marketer is a storyteller. You remember that one kid in school who’d narrate movies and season films during break time to a crowd of attentive listeners? That’s kinda like what a content marketer does.
They identify, create and distribute engaging content to attract a target audience and get them to interact with the products or services that a business offers. Content marketers employ various processes like market research, content strategy, copywriting and search engine optimization to convert prospects into customers.
Is that similar to being a copywriter or digital marketer?
A little, but they’re not exactly the same thing.
Copywriting is more direct and is written to persuade, sell or trigger immediate action. But content marketing involves content that provides long-term value and is a gradual attempt to build relationships with the target audience and generate leads for the business. A content marketer knows when to apply copywriting, but their entire content strategy isn’t designed to only produce short-term results.
Content marketing is also sometimes considered to be digital marketing, but while they work hand-in-hand, there are slight differences in the sense that while all content marketing is digital marketing, not all digital marketing can be said to be content marketing.
Wait. I’ll explain
In content marketing, providing information to build trust is a major component of marketing. In digital marketing, online promotion is the main strategy. This involves pay-per-click advertising, like some of those (slightly annoying) unskippable ads on YouTube and other social media marketing efforts.
In summary, many of the strategies in digital marketing don’t include informational content, which is central to content marketing.
What skills do you need?
Writing is a key skill in content marketing. Remember, you’re telling a story, so you’ll need to know the most compelling and engaging way to tell it.
Not like this, but you get the picture
Search engine optimization is also necessary to help you push the content you create higher in search engine results pages. Other must-have skills include content strategy and management, social media content creation, analytics and social listening.
A degree in marketing is beneficial, but not a strict requirement. You can always take content marketing courses and explore freelance or entry-level content marking opportunities to build your skill and experience.
RELATED: How to Get Into Product Marketing as a Newbie
Where can a content marketer work?
The entire business industry has come to the point where they know excellent content equals brand awareness. So, content marketing has a place in almost every industry, especially tech, media, health and FMCGs.
How much do they make?
Content marketers are in reasonably-high demand these days, and while earning power depends on experience and the company or industry you work with, you can still make good money. On average, a newbie can earn around ₦100-200k/month, and a more experienced marketer can earn about ₦400-500k/month.
In conclusion
If you hope to build a career in content marketing, note that strong storytelling and strategy need to be part of your skill set. For newbies just starting out, consider seeking out marketing communities and consciously network with other professionals to grow professionally and increase your earning potential.

Nollywood Movie Posters Are Now Giving Us Bragging Rights

For the longest time, the saying “Never judge a book by its cover” didn’t quite apply to Nollywood movies because you could, in fact, judge and critique the film, and you wouldn’t even have to go watch it.
But to say the poster game hasn’t come a long way is to deny the significant growth that has enveloped the industry in the last decade.
A chaotic past
I can’t find a better word to describe past Nollywood movie posters than “sensational”, and to be fair, I get the hustle. We’re talking the late 1990s and early 2000s; the industry was only just picking up. Filmmakers and film consumers didn’t have the luxury of digital streaming platforms. Cinema culture was barely existent in Nigeria, save for occasional viewings at the National Theatre in Lagos.
Aggressive marketing was the only way to sell your movies, and when you narrow in further, you’ll arrive at sensational posters. The average consumer only had access to movies via video club rentals or purchase of cassettes, and much later on, compact discs.

If you wanted their coins, your poster had to be three things: Flashy, star-studded and with a title that tells 70% of the story. All three factors helped consumers make on-the-spot decisions to rent or buy your film. And boy, did the movie marketers understand the assignment? Let’s take a look at the evidence.

You already know there’s a plane involved and some characters make their last flight to Abuja.
Let’s get it, Nollywood
It’s 2023, and everything good has come just like the novelist, Sefi Atta, predicted. The budget is bigger, the acting is better, the pictures are cleaner, and the movie posters? Well, how do they say it now, “Seeing is believing”
If there are doubts as to how much growth the industry has had, I raise you the official movie poster for Tunde Kelani’s 2021 biopic, Ayinla.
A one-man silhouette poster for a movie with a reported production budget of ₦50million? The marketers at 51, Iweka road, Onitsha could never. The movie went on to gross over ₦91 million.
It was a risk on the part of movie executives but also an impressive nod to the designers who’re pushing the needle. Just take a look at these receipts.

Like Kelani, more Nollywood filmmakers have embraced minimalism in their approach to movie posters, and when there’s a need to go loud with a bang, it’s still a far cry from “our chaotic past”.

The Only Items Kids Actually Want in Party Packs

A couple of weeks ago, some Nigerian mums shared their experiences with party packs and how it has now become a rich vs rich competition among parents.
Nollywood actress Regina Daniels also broke the internet after sharing a video of travelling boxes cosplaying as party packs for her son’s birthday. Let the poor breathe, abeg.
While the mums are free to go as wild as they want, we know kids are only interested in these basic things.

You don’t even have to go extra with the expensive ones. Just the sight of a ₦50 – ₦100 lollipop will get the kids giddy.

These Nollywood Actresses Should Be on Your Radar Right Now

We recently called it and agreed that Nollywood men are doing the Lord’s work, but it’s important to make a second trip to the garden, pluck red roses and hand them to Nollywood actresses.
The industry is evolving like never before, and it’s so gratifying to see talents match up to the flair that made us fall for Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Rita Dominic among others. If you don’t already have the Nollywood actresses on this list on your radar, here’s your call to do so.
Nollywood’s top young actresses in 2023
Darasimi Nadi

Kayode Kasum’s Obara M stayed with me for many reasons, but one thing I couldn’t quite shake off was Darasimi Nadi’s performance as Ihunanya. Cast alongside veterans like Nkem Owoh and Nancy Isime, the 11-year-old matched their energy head-to-head in a performance that earned her a Best Supporting Actress BFF award. Catch her magic in projects like The Pretty Ones Are the Loneliest, Rough Diamonds and Smokescreen.
Pamilerin Ayodeji
Source: Nollywire
Jade Osiberu’s Gang of Lagos introduced us to the talent that is Maleek Sani of Ikorodu Bois, but with him was another rare Nollywood gem — Pamilerin Ayodeji. Pamilerin was cast as Teni, a younger version of Bimbo Ademoye, and the way she ate the role up? I made a quick dash to my Google search console because where is more of this young queen? The Father, Special Friends and most recently, Alone, are some of her other notable works.
Genoveva Umeh

My first onscreen encounter with Genoveva Umeh was in the Netflix original series, Blood Sisters, where her major standoff with the iconic Kate Henshaw left my mouth gaping. I was hooked, and that singular viewing experience sold me on her ministry. I stumbled on Genoveva again in Netflix’s young adult series, Far From Home, and I knew this was one queen out to make her mark. She’s since landed roles in a 2023 season of MTV Shuga and the Amazon Prime original film, Breath of Life.
Eyiyemi Afolayan

Filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, took the decision to cast his first daughter, Eyiyemi, because “she’s beautiful and a natural at acting”, and honestly, we get it. Her debut as Princess Omowunmi on Anikulapo was a hit that had Twitter NG asking for the neck of her character. She’s among the Nollywood actresses making a bigger comeback in 2023.
Diane Russet
During her time in the BBNaija house, Diane Russet was vocal about her gospel of dominating Nollywood. It might have taken a while to get our attention, but she’s gradually getting there, especially with her slate of YouTube shorts Bayi, Therapist and Storm. She featured in Jade Osiberu’s Brotherhood and executive produced her own Africa Magic show, Ricordi. We know there’s more she brings to the table, and we hope Nollywood is paying attention.
Next rated OGs of 2023
Uzoamaka Aninoh
Uzoamaka Aninoh had us taking notes on her performance in shows like MTV Shuga and Africa Magic’s Venge. But she went on to show her level of depth and range in Showmax’s Diiche, the Domitilla reboot and Dika Ofoma’s short, A Quiet Monday. With CJ Obasi’s Mami Wata set to release soon, we know we’ll get another taste of her medicine, and we can’t wait.
Bimbo Ademoye
Bimbo Ademoye has been at it for a while, and it’s beautiful to see the actress getting all the flowers that should’ve been in her garden for a long time. But they’re there now, and we can’t complain. Cast as Arolake in Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo, and set to make a return in the 2023 series, Anikulapo: Rise of the Specter, her efforts are finally paying off. Beyond a bigger 2023, Bimbo is one of the Nollywood actresses that has staying power.
Elma Mbadiwe

Elma Mbadiwe first popped up on my radar after I watched her in the short film, Without You. Later on, she’d show up on my screen in Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story, Ndani TV’s F.O.MO. and Rumour Has It, and at first, I thought, “Okay, work rate is super.” I was finally sold on her ministry when she played Carmen in Netflix’s first Nigerian young adult series, Far From Home, and I instantly added her to my “Watch out for this star” list.
Meg Otanwa
Meg Otanwa has been at it since 2011, but she didn’t quite stick in the minds of the Nigerian audience until 2022, when she showed up and showed off in Damilola Orimogunje’s film, For Maria Ebun Pataki. The movie was about postpartum depression, and Otanwa was more than perfect to drive the serious message home. Her performance reminded us of her previous roles in films like October 1, Before 30 and Atlanta. Otanwa has all it takes to raise shoulder with our OG Nollywood actresses.
Efe Irele
Efe Irele has had pockets of big moments in Nollywood but none quite come close to her riveting performance as Bianca in Niyi Akinmolayan’s steamy rom-com, Hey You! What could have made for cringe television had the audience delighted, especially her steamy scenes with resident Nollywood bad boy, Timini Egbuson. Efe bagged her first AMVCA in May 2023, for her role as Theresa in Izu Ojukwu’s period film, Four Four, Forty Four, and made a titillating return in Akinmolayan’s latest, House of Secrets. We love the exciting run for her.
Top-rated veteran Nollywood actresses of 2023
Sola Sobowale

Kemi Adetiba dragged mummy Sola Sobowale back to the shores of Nigeria in 2016 to play Tinuade Coker in Ebonylife’s The Wedding Party. Two years later, Adetiba cast the iconic actress as Eniola Salami, the lead in her political thriller, King of Boys, and there’s been no greater career run like Sola’s since then. Sobowale’s character interpretation shocked her to the core and even drove her to watch a film she’d featured in for the first time. In 2022, she flexed on us with her role as Awarun in Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo, and we’ve just accepted that she’s back for a long time.
Kehinde Bankole
In June 2023, for the first time in a long while, I watched Twitter NG collectively agree on one thing: Give Kehinde Bankole her flowers. We knew she was a leading woman in Nollywood, but we needed Biodun Stephen’s Sista to remind us just how iconic the Kehinde Bankole of SuperStory, The Set Up and Tainted Canvas is. She’s poised to have an even louder applause with her portrayal of Olufunmi Ransome Kuti in Bolanle Austen Peters’s upcoming biopic.
Najite Dede
Najite Dede has been around since the days of The Governor (2017), Riona (2020) and Gidi Up (2012), but we needed Niyi Akinmolayan’s House of Secret to show us her level of depth and star power as a Nollywood screen icon. Najite’s class-act performance in the psychological thriller has laid the foundation for an exciting 2023 for the actress.
Kate Henshaw
It’s been over one year since Blood Sisters debuted on Netflix, and I still get flashbacks of Kate Henshaw’s performance as Uduak Ademola; the emotionally-wrought mum who gave zero shits for her daughter but would kill for her son. If anything, that role was a stark reminder of what Henshaw brings to the table of iconic screen goddesses in Nollywood. Seven months into 2023, we’ve seen more of her as Mrs Eket in Niyi Akinmolayan’s House of Secret, and we know she still has more up her sleeves.

The Coolest Nollywood Actors of 2023: Who Are They?

Cringe-style acting is a part of the Nigerian movie industry we can’t erase, but we’re here for the crop of Nollywood actors who are changing this narrative.
From the young guns to the OGs, everyone has upped their game, and it’s understandable; the Nollywood of yesteryears is a no contender for box office-shattering, digital streaming and international projects Nollywood.
If you haven’t been paying attention to the names on this list, here’s a chance to get familiar with all the greatness they bring to the table.
Nollywood’s top young actors in 2023
Maleek Sani
Source: Instagram/@maleek_of_ikorodubois
We were never in doubt that this was one smart little man who would one day claim his spot on our TV screens, we just didn’t know it’d be this early. Maleek as a younger Obalola (Tobi Bakre) in Gangs of Lagos had critics deading the narrative that Nollywood cannot produce child actors.
Mike Folarin

Source: Instagram/@mikeafolarin
A lot of things might have taken a back seat in our memories about Netflix’s five-part series, Far From Home, but surely not Mike Folarin’s performance as Ishaya Bello. Afolarin was a delight to watch from start to finish, and if anything, the outrage against him on Twitter after the series debuted was a true testament to how much he bodied the role. This one has us sat and we have no option but to stan.
Moshood Fattah

Source: Instagram/@moshoodfattah
My first onscreen encounter with Moshood Fattah was in Bolanle Austen Peter’s Fela and the Kalakuta Queens (2017), and I just knew he was one to look out for. Six years later, there he was again in Funke Akindele’s Battle on Buka Street, and my earlier suspicions about him were confirmed. He’s going to be around for a long time.
Chimezie Imo
Source: Instagram/@chimezie_imo
Whether he’s playing a troubled, thrill-seeking teen in films like Nimbe and Kasala, or the lead in a psychological thriller like Choke, Chimezie Imo is a bankable actor who’ll always give you your money’s worth. I mean, it’s not child’s play that he was nominated in an AMVCA category alongside OG Nollywood actors like RMD, Chidi Mokeme and OC Ukeje.
Emeka “Emeneks” Nwagbaraocha

Source: Instagram/@emeneks
You might want to remember this name because he’s one actor poised to have a big career in high-budget, international Nollywood projects. Emeneks captured our attention with his performance as Frank in Netflix’s five-part series, Far From Home. But that wasn’t his first outing, the rising star has featured in projects like Kasala, Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story, Prophetess, and most recently, Niyi Akinmolayan’s noir project, House of Secrets, but OGs know him from EbonyLife’s Life 101. He’s making the right moves, and we’re taking notes.
The next rated OGs
Tobi Bakre
Source: Instagram/@tobibakre
A handful of BBNaija alum have tried to break the jinx of being more than reality stars, but no one has done it quite like Tobi Bakre. He completely swooped us off our feet in 2022 and we aren’t complaining because we want more of it. From Gangs of Lagos to Brotherhood, Tobi bodied the action genre so bad, any conversation about Nollywood lacking action stars will always fall dead on arrival. More of it, Tobi, more of it.
Olarotimi Fakunle

There was a lot to take home from Jade Osiberu’s Gang of Lagos, but anyone who watched the film cannot forget the revelation that was Olarotimi Fakunle. Cast as Kazeem, AKA Eleniyan, in the Amazon Prime project, the level of nuance and depth he brought to the character left the audience with mixed feelings about him as a villain. We’re only hoping Nollywood doesn’t typecast him because there are more layers to this bundle of talent.
Maurice Sam

Although he debuted in 2015 on the Africa Magic Television Series, Hotel Majestic, Maurice Sam’s big Nollywood moment came in 2022 with his role as a hired assassin on Netflix’s original series, Blood Sisters. The role has laid the foundation for an exciting career run. You’ll catch more of Maurice in 2022 projects When Men Cry and Perfect Assistants.
Kunle Remi

Half of Twitter NG wanted their feet on Kunle Remi’s neck when Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo dropped on Netflix in 2022, and that’s a pointer to how well he bodied his role as Saro. The Nollywood actor is not a newbie in these streets, but Afolayan’s bet on him as a lead cast opened the audience’s eyes to his depth. He should’ve bagged that AMVCA award, or at best, be nominated in the category.
Adebowale “Mr Macaroni” Adedayo

Source: Instagram/@mrmacaroni
It’s no surprise that Mr Macaroni is well on his way to making a cross-over to mainstream Nollywood. His approach to online skit-making has always been from the lens of a trained thespian, one who knows his onions. So far, he has landed roles in Anikulapo, Brotherhood and King of Thieves, but we need a Nollywood director to cast him as a leading man. He has all it takes to raise shoulders with some of our favourite Nollywood actors.
Nollywood’s top-rated veterans of 2023
Chidi Mokeme

Source: Instagram/@chidimokeme
When you take a break from your acting career, the only acceptable way to make a comeback is as Scar in a big-budget Nollywood film like Shanty Town. Chidi Mokeme only returned to let us know why he ranks high as a leading man in Nollywood, and boy, were we SAT? He ate, left no crumbs and delivered a straight-up onscreen masterclass on how to be a veteran artist. The actor has taken on more projects, and we can’t wait to be schooled again.
Femi Adebayo
Source: Intagram/@femiadebayosalami
When a Yoruba action epic goes on to rank as one of the leading Nollywood films of 2022, it’s because everyone involved delivered. Femi Adebayo carried the entire King of Thieves on his back with his interpretation of his role as Ageshinkole. He’s one of the Nollywood actors out to remind us why he’s ranked as an OG in the first place. Adebayo is set to break his own record with his soon-to-be-released follow-up, Jagun Jagun.
Ramsey Nouah

Source: Instagram/@ramseynouah
Although he’s been busy with the production side of Nollywood these days, our OG bad boy still has a tight grip on us with his performance as Uncle B in Netflix’s Blood Sisters. With that role, he basically said: “I don’t have to say too much, but I’ll still teach y’all HOW TO ACT”. And honestly, we were schooled. Nouah’s latest, Love, Lust and Other Things, is currently doing mad numbers in the cinemas, and he still has us anticipating projects like Tokunbo, Igbo Landing.
Odunlade Adekola
Source: Instagram/@odunladeadekola
Mo Abudu took the creative decision to cast Odunlade Adekola as Eleshin Oba in the first-ever live-action adaption of Wole Soyinka’s play, The King’s Horseman, and we dare say she couldn’t have chosen better. Odunlade bodied that role to the T, and if anything, it was a full-circle moment that served as a personal reminder that he’s who he thinks he is. He went on to show us in Femi Adebayo’s King of Thieves and is currently receiving rave reviews for his self-directed latest, Orisa.
Jide Kosoko
Daddy Kosoko is the gift that keeps giving to Nollywood, and we’re just genuinely thankful that old age has nothing on him yet. The veteran actor has shown out in 2023 big-budget productions like Al-Majiri, Jagaban: Last Man Standing and is poised to feature in Kunle Afolayan’s upcoming series, Anikulapo: Rise of The Spectre. Daddy Kosoko isn’t halting his wheels, and we rate it.

Food pairing events are known for three things: Free food, great drinks and good vibes. So, when the Singleton Tribe stormed Abuja over the weekend, we knew we’d learn a few tips and tricks on how to properly faaji with friends.
Good food

In this age of FaceTime and video calls, rest assured people are not getting dressed and leaving home just to look at your face. The food must be surplus, and every bite must slap.
Baffs

Speaking of, drip is a lifelong commitment for some of us. Yes, the invite says casual but in a time when fuel is gold, if I’m showing up, I’m showing OUT, thank you very much.
A bonding activity

Think of creative ways to set the tone for a chill and casual occasion. It could be conversational card games or a planting session, if you’re bougie like that. Your guests will probably be more than happy to become plant mums and dads together.
More food because who no like better thing?

If you’re feeling a little playful, you can blindfold your guests for that element of mystery. Mysterious boys and girlies, take note.

Eniola Badmus vs TikToker Who Bagged 3-Year Jail Term Over Defamation Charges

A Nigerian TikToker has bagged a three-year jail term for cyberstalking and defaming Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus. Here’s all we know about the lawsuit:
How did it all start?
On July 19, 2023, a Nigerian lady identified as Nwakaego “Ego” Blessing Okoye filmed a TikTok video, levelling several allegations against Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus.
Ego claimed that in January 2023, she was out with a friend when the actress saw them and asked to have a private audience with her friend. Ego said she knew Eniola was interested in her friend because of her shape. She alleged that the actress took her friend’s number and stated she “had a chairman for her”. Ego asked her friend why she didn’t inform the actress that she was engaged and about to be wed. According to Ego, her friend claimed she wanted to hear what Eniola had to say.
The TikToker labelled Eniola a “professional pimp”, adding that the actress used to sleep around with politicians but was now outsourcing since she’s gotten older. Ego’s TikTok video went viral that same day, with thousands of internet users feeding into her allegations and making more defamatory remarks about the actress.
Eniola Badmus’s reaction
Badmus shared an Instagram post on the same July 19, urging people to “thread carefully”, adding that she wouldn’t listen to “please” if she gets a hold of the lady behind the allegation.
Eniola Badmus involves the police
On Saturday, July 22, three days after the viral video dropped, Ego sent out a distress call via a video she shared online, revealing that police officers had arrived at her residence.
“I’m in serious soup. Eniola Badmus has called the police. They’re at my door. They want to break in. I’m in serious problem. You guys, I need help. They want to break my door.”
Shortly after the distress call went out, Eniola shared a video on her Snapchat page, letting the world know that the police had finally arrested Ego. In the video, a remorseful Ego was seen apologising to Eniola. The actress asked why she defamed her and strongly noted that “sorry” won’t cut it.
“You can’t be sorry. We dey go court.”
Ego admitted to the police that the allegations against the actress were completely false. According to her, a male friend called Fortune Ibe, promised her the sum of ₦200,000 to make the defamatory video about the actress. Ego claimed the friend made the offer after she told him she needed money to pay for her house rent.
She proceeded to apologise to Eniola, noting that everything she said was a lie, and she was only desperate for money to pay her rent.
“I personally sent her a message” — Eniola Badmus
During an Instagram Live interview with media personality, Daddy Freeze, on July 24, Eniola claimed she sent a message to Ego expressing her concerns about the video and urging her to take it down. According to her, Ego told her to “shut up”.
The actress said Ego’s response forced her to take the matter up with her lawyer who submitted a petition and moved the matter to court.
Will Ego really spend three years in jail?
On Tuesday, August 2, a Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Nwakaego Okoye to three years imprisonment for cyberstalking Eniola Badmus.
Justice Nichola Oweibo convicted Ego after she pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of cyberstalking. However, following the convict’s show of remorse, Justice Oweibo gave Ego an option to pay a fine of ₦150,000 in lieu of jail time.
Eniola breaks silence following the court’s ruling
In an Instagram post shared hours after the court’s ruling, Eniola stressed the importance of letting people live their lives without castigating them for it. She mentioned her hurtful experiences during her weight loss journey and how she’s also been subjected to cyberbullying because of her political choices.
According to her, the hateful comments hurt and sometimes “you truly and really want to set an example.” She added, ”While freedom of speech is a fundamental right, I think it should be exercised responsibly and with consideration for the potential harm it may cause.”

We Ran Out of Things to Say to Each Other

I was looking for stories about malice in married couples when Tiffany* (31) reached out. She talked about getting married to the first man she’s ever loved after getting pregnant at 18. She enjoyed the first few years of the marriage, but it later broke down due to fights, financial abuse and infidelity.
This is Tiffany’s story, as told to Boluwatife
I remember the exact moment I knew my marriage was over. I can still recall how my husband casually threw an “I don’t have the time” to my face in response to my suggestion that we see a marriage counsellor. Before that, we hadn’t said a word to each other for seven months.
I met my husband, Ade*, at university in 2009. I was a fresh-faced 17-year-old first-year student excited to be finally free from the control of her strict parents.
I’m the first child of a family of five, and like most Nigerian first daughters can relate to, my mum took it upon herself to make sure I didn’t “spoil”. My life was a school, church and home rotation from primary to secondary school. I never went anywhere else, even on school excursions.
So, even before I finished secondary school, I knew university was my only chance at freedom. I convinced my mum, using the university’s academic ratings and impressive alumni network, to let me pick a school two states away from where we lived. Of course, I didn’t drop any hint that I wanted to stay far away from her, or it wouldn’t have worked.
I was in that state of freedom-induced-excitement when I met Ade. He was a classmate and was so handsome. I had a crush on him before he even asked me out. When he did, I said yes immediately. He was 20 at the time.
Ours was a whirlwind romance that resulted in me getting pregnant the following year at 18. When I found out, I thought, “Surely, my mother will kill me.” In retrospect, pregnancy shouldn’t have come as a surprise because, naively, we only used the withdrawal method of contraception. We were both too shy to buy condoms or seek out other ways to prevent pregnancy.
We tried abortion, but the pill he gave me didn’t do anything. We were still trying to figure out the next step when my mum visited me in school unexpectedly. I was four weeks pregnant then, but apparently, she’d had a dream where someone told her I was pregnant and warned her to make sure I didn’t get an abortion. On hearing that, I had no choice but to confess. Surprisingly, she wasn’t angry. I think she was still scared I’d go ahead with the abortion. When she asked about Ade’s plan to provide for me and the unborn child, I said, “We’ll get married”.
Ade and I hadn’t discussed marriage before then, but it seemed like the logical next step. If we were keeping the baby and we loved each other, why not just get married now rather than later?
I talked to him about it, and he was on board. Again, we were both naive. My mum was relieved that we wouldn’t bring shame to the family, while my dad worried about how we would survive as a family. Ade’s parents met mine, and they (his parents) promised to support us financially for the remaining years we had in school. We got married in 2010. I was 19, and he was 22.

The early years of marriage weren’t as tough as you’d expect with married undergraduates. When I had my child, she spent more time at my mum’s and mother-in-law’s. It was their way of ensuring I focused at school. So, it was just Ade and I, and we were still obsessed with each other.
The real problem started when we graduated. Financial support from his family became inconsistent, and jobs weren’t forthcoming. Our child also started living with us. The pressure started to affect us, and we fought a lot, almost weekly. Anytime he was angry, he’d stop talking to me until I folded and apologised.
Things started to look better in 2014 when Ade finally got a well-paying job. He was supposed to bring in the money while I took care of the home and our four-year-old child. It sounded like a good plan, until it wasn’t.
He became financially abusive. If I asked for money for the smallest things like baby medicine, he’d groan and complain about how he works all day but can’t enjoy his money. He even started keeping tabs on the food items. If I boiled a cup of rice when he wasn’t home, he’d notice and complain.
My mum advised me to get a job to support the family’s income. So, I found a teaching job that allowed me to leave my child in the school’s daycare for free. But it didn’t stop his complaints. The new issue became how I’d started to make dinner late and didn’t have time for him.
I was still trying my best to get things to how they were before when I discovered he was cheating on me. I’d suspected for a while that he was hiding something, so I decided to check his phone one day. Apparently, he was dating someone in his office. I confronted him about it, and he turned it back on me. It became, “How dare you snoop through my phone?”
He stopped talking to me as usual, and I was determined not to apologise this time. He was cheating on me, for God’s sake! He stopped eating at home, and I also stopped cooking for him. We didn’t greet each other at all, and he even started sleeping in the sitting room. He even took it out on our child. If she asked him for a snack, he’d tell her to “Go and ask your mother”. We just ran out of things to say to each other.
It went on like that for seven months until my mother came to visit one day and noticed the tension. She was angry I’d let it fester for so long and made me promise to make amends. After she left, I asked him about seeing a marriage counsellor, and you know how that went.
That incident happened in 2016, and it was the beginning of the end. When he started staying away from the house for multiple consecutive days and speaking loudly on the phone to ladies whenever he was around, I knew I had to leave. My parents weren’t in support, but I moved out with my child in July 2016. The headteacher at the school where I worked was a good friend, and she allowed me to move into the school nurse’s quarters.
It’s been almost seven years since I left, and Ade has never called to know my whereabouts. His family was aware when I left, but apart from calling once in a while to check on my daughter, they made no attempts to reconcile us or make sure he was even doing his part for his child’s upkeep. Thankfully, I’m reasonably well-off financially and can take care of my child.
I still can’t pinpoint exactly what went wrong with us. Maybe it was life, or probably he just fell out of love. Maybe I should’ve handled things better. But it’s too late to start thinking of “what-ifs”. Last I heard from friends, he’d japa.
My child is asking more questions now, and I’m torn between reaching out to him to get closure for her or just ignoring her questions. For now, I’m delaying the inevitable.

Love Life: She Moved in a Week After We Met

Love Life is a Zikoko weekly series about love, relationships, situationships, entanglements and everything in between.

How did you meet?
Jola: We met at a friend’s off-campus birthday party in 2016. We were still undergrads, and I think our whole class attended it. The place was packed because her boyfriend had taken over the party, and I barely knew anyone.
At some point, I saw this guy sitting by himself, looking very chill and contemplative. I watched him for a bit and noticed one of my friends knew him. Later on, I asked him to introduce us. The chill guy turned out to be Alex.
Alex: That’s pretty much it. We were introduced, and just like that, she came into my life. A week later, she moved into my flat.
RELATED: We Love Each Other But Can’t Live Together
Before or after you’d agreed to date?
Alex: After. But we never really agreed; we just knew. We talked for a long time during the party, eventually left and took a stroll where we didn’t say much. Then we ended up at my place. The relationship started right away, to be honest.
Jola: There was no asking out. There was just “I like you”, “I like you too”. Then months later, “I love you”, “I love you too”. That was really it for us. We knew we’d met the one.
We graduated the following year, so it was great to have him as a present support system through graduation struggles, NYSC and the start of our careers. We’re both creatives, so we were able to develop our craft together, hustle for gigs together and so on.
Alex: It was pretty convenient for us to fall in love.
Since we’ve jumped to that, how exactly did you know you were in love?
Alex: She moved in pretty early on, and it somehow felt natural. That must’ve been the first sign.
As soon as she came with her black box and big pink bag — without my prior permission, by the way — I don’t think I’d ever been happier, and I’m usually territorial.
I’m always so happy to do things for her, to get her gifts or just small things she likes, and she always pops up in my mind when something interesting is happening.
Jola: I knew I was in love with him after living with him for about a month and realising I wasn’t sick of him. He’s such a pleasure to live with. He’s not perfect — we do have our fights once in a while — but he’s so considerate, neat and clean. In fact, I’ve learnt to be cleaner from him.
I also always want to be with him, but I’ve never felt like he thinks I’m too needy or clingy.
Alex: Yeah. We go everywhere together. We’re like each other’s hand bag. We don’t have everything in common, but we have such good conversations. We can talk for hours and hours.
Jola: We were considering starting a podcast together, inspired by my popular namesake. But that was before literally everyone jumped on it.
Right? But what led up to Jola moving in? What was it about that first week?
Jola: It’s been over seven years. Not sure it was even that big of a deal. I’ll say I wanted to visit him all the time.
Alex: She was always at my place after that first night. Maybe because it was closer to campus and in a more convenient part of the school community than hers.
Jola: I’d go straight to his after classes or we’d go out together and end up back there after. Then I’d find it hard to make it back to my flat later.
Alex: Either it’d get too late or we just didn’t want to part ways. So most nights, she’d sleep over.
Jola: Then in the morning, I’d be worried about getting ready, if my clothes were rumpled, stuff like that. By the end of the first week, I was tired of that routine. I went home one afternoon, packed my important items and returned to his place. Over the next few days, I moved my remaining things and abandoned the rest. Even after graduation, I never went back to my parents’ house.
Wild. How did they take that?
Jola: They pushed back for a bit. My mum felt I just wanted freedom to be wayward, but once they knew the pressure wasn’t working, they eased off. It helped that I didn’t need them for the rent because they’d never have released funds. I also stopped asking them for allowance.
Alex: My parents, on the other hand, thought I should’ve been saving for important projects instead of spending on rent so early. But it’s not like we got an apartment in Lekki Phase 1. I told them to calm down.
Jola: We both served in Kogi for NYSC and got cheap corper housing for the year. When we moved back to Lagos, we got a place close to the university community in Yaba. We paid for everything off our earnings as freelancers for another year.
Alex: We really tried o. We’ve come far.
If you want to share your own Love Life story, fill out this form.
True. How are you guys not married yet?
Jola: We’re still saving for that o. Country hard. Haven’t you heard?
Alex: And when we think “marriage”, we also think of children. We have high hopes for our future kids — what school they’ll attend, what activities we’d like for them to be involved in — so we need to get to a certain level in our careers first.
Jola: That’s it.
Alex: Besides that, we’re already married in our own eyes.
Fair. But what was your first major fight about?
Jola: So when we first got together in 2016, he used to study overnight a lot. He’d leave the bedroom light on through the night instead of just going to the living room. He didn’t like going there because he shared it with his two housemates.
Meanwhile, I’m a light sleeper and can’t sleep if it’s not pitch dark. I thought since he knew this, he’d stop, but no. One time, he did it for three days straight, and I wasn’t getting any sleep.
Alex: Yeah. I actually didn’t put two and two together.
Jola: When I finally told him on the fourth day, he just dismissed it — his studies were more important than my rest. That night, two of his coursemates came to the room to read until around midnight. I had an exam at 8 a.m. the next day. I was so angry, and I told him as soon as they left.
Alex: She ranted for a while and then started crying. I stood there shocked. I sincerely had no idea the light was affecting her sleep. I really felt bad, but me too, I didn’t immediately apologise. I just left the room for her that night. I actually cried in the sitting room because of how bad I felt, and I was also overwhelmed with final exam pressure and exhaustion.
Jola: We gave each other attitude for the rest of the exam period, but as soon as it was done, we made up and it was as if the fight never happened. It was just exam hormones.
What’s the best thing about being together so far?
Jola: How well we understand each other and get along.
Alex: Yeah. The whole foundation of our relationship is that we get along well. Everything happens naturally.
Jola: We get along with the other important people in each other’s lives too. All our friends are now friends with each other, same with our siblings and parents. We even use each other as a vibe check. If you don’t get along with someone I’m about to be friends with, they usually get cut off and vice versa.
Alex: We also have so many inside jokes now. How could I start that over with someone new?
What’s the most unconventional thing about your relationship?
Jola: How little sex we have? People expect that we must have a lot of sex because of how clingy we are to each other, but we only have sex every other day.
Alex: Are you joking? Tell me you’re joking.
Jola: Maybe twice a week at most.
Anyway we made a decision a few years back to only fight or argue via text. Even if we’re in the same house.
Alex: It doesn’t always work, but it’s the funniest thing when it happens. And depending on how serious the fight is, it diffuses the situation a bit. Have you ever texted while you’re angry? It’s the worst.
How would you rate your Love Life on a scale of 1 to 10?
Jola: A high 8 that’s leaning towards 9.
Alex: 9

Negligence Strikes Again as Dr Vwaere Diaso Falls to Death in Elevator Accident

Just mere hours after an aircraft crashed in Lagos, tragedy struck again. A Nigerian doctor, identified as Dr Vwaere Diaso, lost her life while using an elevator that reportedly crashed from the 10th floor of Lagos Island General Hospital, Odan, yesterday, August 1, 2023.
She was said to be just two weeks away from completing her housemanship.
Accusations of negligence
Since the news of Dr Vwaere’s passing came to light, multiple Twitter users have complained about the same elevator, claiming it has been faulty and poorly maintained for at least three years. Some also claim that the hospital authorities knew about the elevator’s state but kept making unfulfilled promises to handle it.
Complaints about the elevator from 2020 also surfaced.
It was also revealed that it took about an hour to free Dr Vwaere from the crashed elevator. However, even after she was removed from the crash site, medical care wasn’t immediately administered due to a lack of oxygen, blood and emergency preparedness.
Outrage and demands for justice
On Wednesday, August 2, 2023, some of Dr Vwaere’s colleagues and other concerned individuals took to the streets to demand justice for the late doctor.
The government’s response
As of the time of publication, the Lagos State Government has not made an official statement regarding the tragedy.

“I Wasn’t Even Aware” — 7 Nigerians on Celebrating International Day of Friendship

International Day of Friendship 2023 was on Sunday, July 30, but there was barely any buzz around it on social media, and we understand why. Nigerians are dealing with a lot at the moment.
We asked some people how they celebrated the special day and responses ranged from having no idea to watching “Barbie” with friends.
“We hung out but no one was aware” — Deji*
There’s a World Friendship Day? I wasn’t even aware, so it didn’t cross my mind to celebrate it. Although I did hang out with my friends on Sunday, but I don’t think anyone of us was aware. We all just carried on as usual. We have this tradition where we try to hang out every last Sunday of the month, so I guess we still celebrated each other.
“We had drinks, ate and went to see Barbie” — Tunji*
I had a great day. I had no idea there was a celebration, but I got this sweet message from my friend around noon — throwback pictures from when we were in uni. She also sent a short text telling me how much she loved and valued our friendship. That was really sweet, so I showed up at her place in the evening, we had drinks, ate and went to see “Barbie”. Now, I want to commit the date to memory because I have other friends I also should’ve celebrated.
“I don’t have deep friendships” — Bisi*
World Friendship Day isn’t as popular as other celebrations. I didn’t see anything on social media until much later in the day when my husband mentioned it in passing, so I didn’t do anything to celebrate. Even if I was aware, I don’t think it would’ve been different. I don’t have deep friendships; it’s mostly surface connections.
“It was sweet to express our love for each other” — Demola*
only got the memo when my friend sent a message to our WhatsApp group in the afternoon. There are four of us in the group, and that’s where we gist, plan movie dates, trips, vacations and just catch up. The message was a sweet one, and we all took turns sending something short and sweet to each other. That was about it, but I spent the rest of the day grinning. It was really sweet to celebrate our friendship and express love for each other.
“I wasn’t aware and wouldn’t have celebrated even if I knew” — Halimah*
I didn’t know there was a World Friendship Day celebration, and even if I did, I doubt I’d have celebrated. There’s a lot of shege in Nigeria at the moment, and I and my friends are surviving on “It is well”. Maybe I’ll catch on to it in 2024. Hopefully, things will be stable then.
“All my friends have relocated” — Dotun*
I started celebrating this about two years ago, but this year, it was just there. I’m the only one in my group that hasn’t relocated. We’re all scattered across different parts and even my friends who used to be in Lagos have moved to Abuja. Adulthood is really kicking our asses right now, and I wish it could be different but it’s what it is. Maybe I’ll send a message to our WhatsApp group later in the week. I could use a physical hangout with all my friends right now. I miss them so much.
“I’ll give my bestie a gift later” — Yeside*
I was with my bestie throughout the day, but neither of us was aware of any friendship celebration day. Sometimes, it’s hard to keep track of these international celebrations, and you don’t even know which one is relevant to Nigeria. But now that you’ve mentioned it, maybe I’ll go extra with what I plan to do for her birthday later in the week. I planned to buy her a cake but I’m inspired to also get a gift to celebrate our friendship. She’d be so surprised. Lol.

What Are Your Protein Options With a ₦1k Budget?

It’s getting harder to enjoy the simple things of life in Nigeria, so we really need Jagaban to do something fast about the food inflation problem.
Chicken, turkey and beef have now become optional in a lot of homes, with some people saving it for special occasions only. God, abeg. Things are THAT bad, and that’s why this article exists.
Eggs

You might not get the chewy and juicy satisfaction that beef or turkey gives, but at least, protein deficiency will have nothing on you. Bonus point if you deep fry your boiled eggs and soak them in the stew.
Ponmo
Don’t go for the regular type. Ask the market traders for “white ponmo”. It’s tastier, cleaner and sometimes comes with small chunks of beef! You should also season and boil properly before throwing in your soup.
Round fish (panla)
Think of how garri saves life, and you’ll come to truly appreciate this fish. With ₦1000, you can get five to eight pieces, depending on the size and market you’re buying from.
Dry red prawn

Source: 24 hours market
Best for when you’re making budget soups like ogbono, okra or egusi. A small peak milk tin of them sells for ₦500 – ₦700.
Crabs

Source: Alice
Forget the expensive price points at restaurants and fast-food joints, crabs are one of the cheapest seafood options in the market. A thousand naira worth might even be too much for a family.
Dried crayfish

Source: Market NG
You might not get anything to chew on, but this will elevate the taste of your vegetable, ogbono or egusi soups.
Chicken feet

Source: Simply Recipes
Forget the bad PR, this is actually a great protein option you should consider whether you’re on a budget or not. The major key here is to clean and season properly.

Just as we anticipated, Biggie is bringing an interesting twist to the season by introducing the BBNaija All-Stars eviction jury.
The play here is to bring ex-housemates from different seasons who will deliberate to save one of the housemates from possible eviction. The jury will be presented with a list of the housemates with the least votes for the week.
While we wait for Biggie to announce the members of the jury, here’s the Zikoko pick for premium drama.
Tacha

She was disqualified from the Pepper Dem season, so her chances of making the jury are quite slim. Still if Tacha makes the jury selection, Mercy Eke would not be safe. But then, Mercy is a strong contender and the possibility of her even making the bottom three is almost non-existent.
Mike Edwards

Source: Instagram/@aireyys
Known as the resident sweet boy of his season, Mike has a soft spot for Mercy since they were the last men standing in their season. Mike will fight for Mercy if her name ever pops up for possible eviction.
Vee

If there’s one thing we know about Vee, it’s that she won’t attach sentiments to her decisions as a member of the jury. But Neo and Venita should put up prayers if they make the bottom three, just in case.
Esther

Source: Instagram/@esther_biade
It’s hard to forget Frodd and Esther’s falling out during the Pepper Dem reunion. Esther went on and on about how Frodd was a gossip. He mentioned how she moved with “friends in the upper echelon”. Although it’s hard to say if they’re still bitter exes, Frodd should watch his back if Esther makes the BBNaija All-Stars eviction jury.
Ella

She had a nasty falling out with Mercy Eke, and there’s no way her emotions wouldn’t override her decision-making if she’s chosen as a jury member. She also doesn’t have a cordial relationship with anyone in the house, so no one is safe really.
Ka3na
Source: Instagram/@official_kaena
If there’s any prayer request Tolani Baj should be prioritising right now, it’s one against the boss lady Ka3na making the jury selection. The two had a nasty fight their first week in Biggie’s house, and they never saw eye-to-eye till the end of the show. Tbaj is not safe in a world where Ka3na is a juror, period.
Lucy
Source: Instagram/@iamlucyedet
Her iconic statement, “It was a pleasure”, was a culmination of her unpleasant experiences with her fellow housemates in the Lockdown house. Lucy won’t go easy on Kidd, Tolani Baj and Neo if she’s selected as an All-Stars juror.
Boma

Boma’s falling out with Angel in the Shine Ya Eyes house makes for one of the most chaotic moments in BBNaija history. Although they seem to have moved past it, Angel might not escape eviction if Boma has to make a decision. Lucky day for Whitemoney and Pere sha.
Brighto

He was such a menace in the Lockdown season that he earned a reputation as the Lord Baelish of Nigeria. Brighto has no sense of allegiance to anybody, and it wouldn’t matter whose head is on the chopping block if he has to make a decision as a juror, he’ll get them evicted with no strings attached.

BBNaija All-Stars Housemates With Pending Beef to Settle

It’s been seven days since the BBNaija All-Stars launched and at this point, it’s safe to say Big Brother had absolute chaos in mind when he made the season’s selection.

The housemates are already throwing hints of needing therapy and honestly, we get it. It’s not easy to be in the same space 24/7 with your sworn opp or ex-lover. In case you didn’t know, these are the BBNaija All-Stars housemates who had pending beef before they stepped into the house.
Ike and Mercy
Mercy and Ike were the power couple of the Pepper Dem season but the relationship crashed hard when they left the house. They’ve thrown shots at each other on social media and during interviews but nothing over the top. Maybe this explains the reduced tension between them in the house.
Ceec and Alex
The duo has gone down in history as the first set to bicker in the All-Stars house but their beef dates back years ago. Alex and CeeC were housemates in the Double Wahala season but they never saw eye-to-eye. It didn’t help that they had a mutual friend in common-Tobi Bakre.
Ceec had a situationship with Tobi and Alex also had a strong friendship with him. But things got ugly when Alex frowned at the way Ceec treated her friend, Tobi. All attempts at a resolution in the house and at the reunion fell flat. During the reunion, Ceec also claimed that she found out Tobi and Alex had sex despite their ‘best friends’ tag.
Doyin and Adekunle
Their heated gbas-gbos during the last reunion is still fresh in our minds so what exactly is the play here Biggie? Adekunle and Doyin weren’t fans of each other in the Level Up house. For Adekunle, she was always in everyone’s business while Doyin maintains that Adekunle cannot be trusted. Anyway, they’ve both been avoiding each other since they stepped into the All-Stars house and it doesn’t look like there’s going to be a resolution anytime soon.
Pere and Whitemoney
If the BBNaija organisers had a play here, it’s falling hard because these guys might have even forgotten they have beef. Pere was Whitemoney’s opp in the Shine Ya Eyes house. He wasn’t a fan of Whitemoney monopolizing the kitchen and he made his dislike crystal clear. The boys are getting along in the All-Stars house sha, even though it might be a fake bromance.
Neo and Venita
It’s barely visible but there’s been tension between the cousins before they stepped into the All-Stars house. Venita didn’t approve of Neo’s relationship with fellow housemate Vee Iye inside and outside the BBNaija house, and she occasionally threw shade on social media. Neo didn’t like this and also addressed Venita in a couple of his media rounds. So far, they’ve been cautiously cordial towards each other in the house.

If Twitter Is X, What Is Your Favourite Brand?

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter in October 2022, he’s made changes like Twitter Blue, paying creators and tweets showing the number of views. The only thing he hasn’t changed is the logo. Oh wait, even the logo didn’t survive his revamp. While I can’t match his wealth, I can definitely match his ability to shrink entire brands into one letter. Here we go.
Palmpay = B

Bridgerton. Why? They will stand with you between the heavens and the earth. They will tell you where you are. When will you repay your loan?
GTB = G

Source: Zikoko Memes G stands for gun because there’s no difference between those charges and armed robbery.
Instagram = M
IG is now one big marketplace. You’ll be scrolling through, looking for pictures of your peng people, but the wig and clothes ads won’t let you rest.
Bigi = F
I’m sure there’s no flavour that Bigi hasn’t experimented with. The only one that’s left is N’abania.
Minimie = W

Apart from being a snack, it can also double as a weapon. The only thing that’s harder than minimie is convincing your mum that pressing your phone is not the reason for your sickness.
Apple = I
Virtually all Apple products begin with an “I.” Well, apart from the one I can actually afford — apple juice.
Access Bank = M
Money? Mobile banking? No amigo, it’s Marathon. Why be just a bank when you can be one that organises the biggest marathon in Nigeria?

It’s the Super Falcons’ World And We’re Just Living In It

In the weeks leading up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, there was a lot of unrest in the Super Falcons Camp. Clashes between the NFF and the coaching staff and players about owed salaries and bonuses meant many Nigerian fans expected very little when the tournament began. All these distractions coupled with the fact that they were the lowest-ranked team (40) in the star-studded group that had Canada (7), Australia (10) — the co-hosts alongside New Zealand — and the Republic of Ireland (22) meant many pundits predicted that these teams would take turns to give Nigeria a proper beating.

Source: Zikoko memes We’re now two games in, and it’s looking like Nigeria is taking no prisoners.

Source: Zikoko memes After a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Canada, the confidence in the team began to rise. A penalty save from Chiamaka Nnadozie was the highlight of a very solid defensive display from Nigeria. Their second game, however, is where the team truly shone. Coming from a goal down to defeat the co-hosts Australia, was as big as underdog stories could get. After 45 minutes of the Nigerian goal being peppered with Australian shots, they finally broke the deadlock in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. But their lead lasted only as long as it takes the average person who relocates to Canada, to start a Youtube channel. About five minutes later, Uchenna Kalu slotted in the equalizer.

Source: Zikoko memes This was the second-ever first-half goal scored by Nigeria at the Women’s World Cup, despite playing in 18 matches across previous editions.
Nigeria now leads group B heading into the final game and while a draw against already knocked out Republic of Ireland will confirm qualification, a win will put Nigeria on top of the group.
The Australian team, backed by the over 40,000 fans in the stadium, fought to regain their lead but like my people say, no matter how lizard do press-up reach, he no fit get muscle reach alligator. Two goals from Osinachi Ohale (66) and Asisat Oshoala (72) put the game beyond reach for the Australians. They huffed and puffed and managed to snatch a consolatory goal in the 10th minute of added time as the Falcons defended their lead with their livesWhat this means for Nigeria
Nigeria now leads group B heading into the final game and while a draw against already knocked out Republic of Ireland will confirm qualification, a win will put Nigeria on top of the group.

The only thing Nigerians love more than a big win is bragging about the win. Nigerians, in expected fashion, took to twitter to “pepper the haters.”
This win has also drawn some media attention to the salaries the players are being owed as the Arsenal legend Ian Wright tweeted at the NFF to pay them.
Pay them!!!!!! @thenff 🇳🇬
— Ian Wright (@IanWright0) July 27, 2023
This started the hashtag #paythem. Although the NFF hasn’t said anything about this, Nigerians have chosen to celebrate this iconic win. There were also some records broken as the Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi became the oldest African and second-oldest player to play in the world cup at 40 years old.Asisat Oshoala also became the first African player to score in three different world cups (2015, 2019 and now 2023). Agba Baller herself. Asisat Oshoala’s celebration is one that will surely be talked about for ages to come as women removing their shirts when celebrating is not as common as seen on the men’s side.
Now that qualification from the group is very likely, the Nigerian team will focus on going as far in the competition as possible.Chop chop, we have a world cup to win.

How to Avoid Billing During Salary Week

Don’t get excited
Why are you expressing joy? That’s a sign that things are soft and you have money. Don’t do it. You need to make the people who’ll bill you think there’s no money on ground.
Stay inside
Out of sight is out of mind. People can only bill you when they see you. If you stay inside this week, you’ll definitely escape billing.
If you must go outside, frown
If you have a resting ‘vexed’ face, put it on. Let people know they’re taking a risk by asking for anything.
Or print your account number on a shirt
It’s cheaper to just stay inside. But who knows? Maybe you might get fuel money for another week if you try this.
Put your phone on DND
This is a good time to unplug for the month. There’s money, so you can put your phone on do-not-disturb for a week without feeling like you’re playing with fire.
Complain about Nigeria on Twitter
We all know things are more expensive now. That’s why you need to actively complain about the increasing cost of living on Twitter so no one mistakenly comes near you.
Bill them first
Identify the people who are most likely to bill you, and bill them first. Preempt their move before they make it. You don’t need the money, but it definitely works if you want to keep these people away.
Use your bank as an excuse
Tell them your bank app has issues and you can’t log into it. If you’re using a Nigerian bank, chances are you won’t be lying to them.

Precious Gaza and Alleged Misappropriation of ₦86.7m Donations for BMT Procedure

Precious Gaza, a sickle cell patient and advocate, is currently trending on Twitter following allegations that she misappropriated medical financial aid meant for her Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) procedure.

Photo: The Guardian
Fellow Nigerians and other individuals who made donations towards Gaza’s procedure have since expressed reservations about her actions. Here’s all we know about the situation so far:
Who is Precious Gaza?
A LinkedIn page owned by Gaza describes her as a customer success manager, community builder and sickle cell advocate.

Gaza, who is also a sickle cell patient, became known to many people for her advocacy work around the disorder. A search on Google returns with a string of articles and videos of Gaza using her platforms to make a case for fellow sickle cell patients in Nigeria.
In a 2021 article, Gaza opened up about her struggles with the chronic illness and how spending time abroad changed her perspective. An excerpt reads:
“Then I travelled to the UK for my master’s in 2018. The care I received changed my perspective. During hospital visits in Nigeria, health professionals would say, “Weren’t you here last month?” or “See you soon.” I would feel guilty and apologise every time I fell sick. In the UK, health professionals would remind me that I had no control over my health. At some point, they asked if I fully understood my diagnosis. They “educated” me about sickle cell, but more importantly, they made me feel seen by really listening to me.”
Getting a Bone Marrow Transplant
Gaza disclosed that a group of friends who had watched her struggle all her life started a GoFundMe for a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) procedure.
The GoFundMe page, organised by a group of friends, went live on March 2021, with a goal to raise $200,000 to cover Gaza’s BMT procedure.
“Precious Gaza is a sickle cell warrior and we are trying to raise money for a bone marrow transplant surgery so she can live sickle cell free. I’m opening this because if anyone deserves a chance at this life, it’s her. Nothing is really too small. Give as freely and sincerely as you can,” the description read.
Below are supporting medical documents from Sheba International, a medical center in Isreal “dedicated to providing advanced and compassionate medicine for everyone.”

The GoFundMe page also has a documentary detailing Gaza’s struggles as a sickle cell patient.
Why is she trending at the moment?
On Tuesday, July 25, Gaza’s friends issued a statement on a new Twitter account (@BMTFORPRESH) announcing that they no longer have access to the original account (@bmtforpreshgaza) which was created to keep the public updated about donations for her BMT procedure.
Her friends proceeded to clear the air and give an account of what had transpired since they started the medical financial aid cause in March 2021.
According to them, a total of £53,400.00 was raised via GoFundMe and ₦33 million was raised in naira.
Gaza’s friends also claimed that as of July 5, 2023, she was in receipt of all the donations made via the GoFundMe and naira donation channels. They added that the GoFundMe channel continued to receive more donations after July 5 but “made the collective decision to hold back from sending those funds to their rightful owner, Precious Gaza.”
Their reason for holding back the funds:
Gaza’s friends claimed that they informed her family upon discovery that the donations handed over to her hadn’t been used for the purpose they were intended.
They claimed her family members promised to handle the matter internally.
However, while waiting for the situation to be rectified, the friends alleged that Gaza continued to “actively solicit more funds on TikTok” and they came to the conclusion that the matter hadn’t been handled as promised by her family members.
According to them, when they tried to reach out on social media, they realized they had been blocked. She also “ignored prompts to do the right thing, claiming her family had taken control of her phone”.
In addition, Gaza’s friends claimed they learned she had been receiving direct donations and was in “exclusive control of all the funds.”
Gaza’s friends reiterated that the bone marrow donation campaign was born out of goodwill, pure intentions and a desire to see their friend get the procedure that will help her live sickle-cell-free.
They, however, expressed disappointment at Gaza’s alleged deception and misappropriation of the “funds meant for something so vital and lifesaving.”
According to them, the GoFundMe link is officially closed and no longer accepting donations.
Gaza’s side of the story
Gaza’s official Twitter account @preshgaza is currently inactive but not before she put out a four-page statement addressing the claims made by her friends.

In her statement, Gaza appreciated her friends and family, admitting that she wouldn’t be alive if they hadn’t started an intervention to save her life.
She, however, disclosed that she has been battling drug dependency and mental illness. According to her, she’s been battling depression and schizophrenia.
“Drug dependency and mental issues coupled with sickle cell are crazy to deal with all at the same time but I’m going to get back on my feet.”
Gaza equally acknowledged the need for her friends to set the record straight and clear the air regarding the donations made toward her BMT procedure.
This was followed by a breakdown of how she has spent the donations received so far.
· Flights to and fro the UK, and for pre-fertilisation
· Consultation with doctors
· Hospital bills in UK as a visitor
· On deteriorating mental and physical health
According to Gaza, it has taken so long for her to get the procedure done because there’s a waitlist where people wait for years to get their turn.
She reiterated that she understands the need for her friends to issue a disclaimer, especially since questions are springing up about the money donated. Gaza claims that she’s still on track to get the BMT procedure as the waitlist has now been extended to 2024.
According to Gaza, she’s been suppressing her struggle with mental health and schizophrenia, an action which caused her to be “delusional, narcissistic and act like everything is fine”. She added that has no reason not to want to be cured.
“In the meantime, I’m fighting suicidal thoughts, anxiety, depression and schizophrenia, which I have meds for.”
In the statement, Precious Gaza disclosed that she’s been dependent on prescribed opioids for a long time but kept it private out of shame and mistreatment at the hospital.
“Mental health issues and opioid dependency is a sickness that’s hard to explain in this part of the world. My failure warriors popping pills in silence so that they function every day without pain working on 9-5 understand. That said, thanks to all my friends for your sacrifices. I’m sorry and I hope you forgive me and give me grace. Gazelles, please don’t give up on me. I’m coming back stronger.”
The internet reacts
Nigerians, among others who donated to Gaza’s BMT procedure, have since shared mixed reactions. Many have expressed strong reservations about her actions.
An update
On Thursday, July 27, Gaza’s friends issued a second statement as a response to her attempt to give clarification on the matter.
According to them, they noticed discrepancies when different members of the support group approached Precious Gaza about the progress of the BMT procedure. One of her friends ultimately advised her to give a public update, which Gaza agreed to and did by posting on Instagram.
Gaza’s friends claimed they don’t have access to her IG page but shared a screenshot of a Twitter post where she said she was awaiting visa approval.

According to them, the post was different from the update they’d agreed on and further encouraged her to give proper updates about the procedure.
After weeks passed with no noticeable action, Gaza’s friends mentioned that they approached her again to urge her to give public updates about the BMT procedure. They said this was when they discovered she was still soliciting funds on TikTok and decided to have a conversation in their group chat with her. Gaza’s friends claimed she apologized but made no mention of her fund-soliciting activities on TikTok or why she blocked them. It was at this point that she also disclosed that she’d been diagnosed with another chronic disease.

The friends claimed her history of being dishonest forced them to demand a medical report confirming the new diagnosis; an action received with accusations of being unsupportive and Gaza ultimately exiting the group.
They proceeded to visit her at home and during their meeting, Gaza claimed her dad was with the medical report of her recent diagnosis, and admitted that she had spent ₦15 million of the BMT donations on medication. At the meeting, everybody agreed that Gaza and her dad would visit the bank and restrict her access to the BMT funds. This, in addition to going to rehab and getting therapy.
The friends said Gaza returned days later claiming she had been checked into a rehabilitation center.

However, given Gaza’s history of dishonesty, her friends made deeper findings about her claim of checking into a rehab center and discovered that she’d allegedly lifted the images she sent to them from Google.

Gaza’s friends took it upon themselves to update the public about the progress of the BMT procedure and this was when they requested bank account statements to make accurate calculations. They claimed Gaza allegedly refused at first, before she finally sent the statement for a Zenith Bank account opened for the naira donations.
Upon review of the bank statement, Gaza’s friends discovered, “The BMT funds had not only been spent but that Precious had also not been honest about what she had been spending the money on.” They added “We discovered that Precious had been spending the money since 2021; expenses on restaurants, spas local flights, and other reckless personal expenditure. We also found large chunks of money transferred to her personal bank account.”
According to Gaza’s friends, the bank statements confirmed earlier suspicions that she had organized a birthday party in December 2022 with funds from the BMT donations. They said Gaza had initially mentioned that her family members sponsored the party. Upon further investigation, the relatives disclosed that Gaza claimed her then boyfriend footed the bills for the party, adding that they would take up the issue with her.

The friends made further attempts to get the statement for a Barclays bank account that contained the donations received from the GoFundMe link. According to them, Gaza responded by sending pictures of a new rehab centre where she had allegedly been moved to.
Gaza’s friends tried to corroborate her claims from family members who revealed that she was at home and not in a rehab center as alleged. Gaza was also still active on TikTok, soliciting funds.

This action prompted her friends to disable the GoFundMe page that had been running since March 2021 and put out an official statement updating the public.
According to them, Precious Gaza had an Instagram live session on July 25, where she still refused to give proper accounts and claimed the rehab had given her a day off to go home and cook.
It was alleged that during the live, Gaza said she had gotten test kits for herself and family members, and could finally get a date for the BMT. It was during this live that she also revealed that she was on a waitlist, information which her friends said was unknown to them.
They claimed to only know that Gaza’s dad was a match and that he was going to travel with her to Turkey for the procedure. They also confirmed that Gaza had shown them proof of a $10000 payment made to a Turkish hospital, as well as letters to grant her and her father visas into the country. However, Precious Gaza later told her friends that the specialist she was seeing had been transferred to the US and as such the procedure would also be done in the US.
Gaza’s friends said they expected her to give this clarification during her live session but she didn’t. In addition, the waitlist referenced was a “BMT clinical trial, which was a long process with an even longer waiting list.”
According to her friends, “the BMT clinical trials are 100% free which means that Precious Gaza still has not accounted for the money.”
Gaza’s friends categorically stated that no church or Christians seeking to do charity work were behind the fundraising campaign; it was an initiative created exclusively by her friends.
For them, a lot has been uncovered about their friend in the process of uncovering evidence surrounding the BMT but according to them, they hope she goes ahead with the procedure so that she can live sickle-cell free.
A pending donation of £65 left in the GoFundMe has been donated to Hope at Dawn Sickle Cell Foundation.
This is a developing story.

Talk True: Does Facial Hair in Women Mean Hormonal Imbalance?

Talk True is a Zikoko limited series for medical myth-busting. With each episode, we’ll talk to medical professionals about commonly misunderstood health issues to get the actual facts.
Like most things in our society, men and women have different experiences — relationships, even — with facial hair. For men, facial hair is usually associated with maturity and good looks. For women, the situation is different.

And more than a little odd
It’s not uncommon for people to claim that facial hair in women is a sign of masculinity, “wickedness”, and even infertility linked to hormonal imbalance. Are these claims based on scientific fact, or are they just myths? Dr Henrietta Quarshie provides answers.
What causes facial hair growth in women?
“I’ve heard the funniest beliefs about facial hair; how it indicates riches, wickedness, infertility, or that it means the women would beat their husbands,” Henrietta says.

Henrietta explains that there’s actually a medical term for this unusual hair growth.
“It’s called hirsutism, and it’s characterised by excess hair growth in women that occurs in a male pattern distribution: face, arms, chest, abdomen and back. The hair is usually excessive, coarse, curly, and pigmented. Hirsutism is quite common and mostly implies abnormal androgen (hormone) action.”
Androgens are hormones typically found in men but are also produced in small quantities in women. Abnormal androgen action, in this case, means that the hormone is produced at a higher level than it should be.
But before you get scared, not all facial hair is a sign of this condition.
“Some people are just naturally hairy. Sparse hair growth on the chin, for example, doesn’t necessarily indicate hirsutism.
However, we must note that some people might present with only facial hair in hirsutism, but it is often as described; excessive, coarse, curly and really dark.”
Is every woman with facial hair at risk of a medical issue like hormonal imbalance?
In a word, no. Henrietta explains further.
“Not all facial hair is related to hormonal imbalance, and it doesn’t indicate masculinity. But when facial hair is caused by hirsutism, the person has high testosterone levels. This doesn’t always represent a serious medical problem, but if it does, it’ll have to be investigated and managed.
Some serious medical problems that can cause hirsutism include adrenal gland disorders, ovarian tumours or Cushing disease.”
Sometimes, the cause of hirsutism is unknown. But Henrietta notes that there are certain risk factors for the condition.
“Obesity can influence the way the body produces and processes hormones. If someone in your family also has excess hair, you can have it too.”
RELATED: Talk True: Is Period Syncing a Real Thing?
Should you be worried?
“While facial hair can be a very emotionally distressing experience for most women, excess hair in itself is not harmful. The concern most women have is due to cosmetic reasons and appearance. However, it’s necessary to rule out any potential or underlying health issue,” Henrietta notes.
Do you need to see a doctor?
Henrietta emphasises that while it’s not always a concern, excess hair may need to be investigated.
“The clinician needs to confirm that the underlying condition that caused the hirsutism, if any, isn’t harmful to the person. For example, while facial hair growth doesn’t mean the woman has Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), it’s one of the commonest causes of facial hair growth. PCOS leads to ovarian cysts, which can lead to defective hormone production in a biological female and thus can cause fertility problems if not managed.
Whatever the cause, it doesn’t mean the patient is losing her femininity.”
Can facial hair growth be stopped or treated?
Yes. Depending on the cause of the hair growth, different strategies can be effective in its removal.
“Systemic therapy, like the use of oral contraceptives, can help to reduce the production of androgens. You can also go the mechanical depilation way via shaving, plucking, waxing or laser hair removal.”
The takeaway
Facial hair growth doesn’t make you less feminine and probably doesn’t indicate a serious medical issue. If there’s excess hair in other parts of your body, or you just don’t feel comfortable with it, please visit a doctor to rule out any underlying medical issue.
The next time someone says, “You have beards/a moustache? That means you’re wicked o”, feel free to hit them with the facts … Or just show them real wickedness.

BBNaija All-Stars Eviction: All the Twists and Turns

Big Brother is going all out to make the All-Stars season different for ex-housemates who are back in his house for another season.
It’s going to be a whole different game and we’re here for all the drama. But first, here’s what we know so far about how Biggie plans to run the BBNaija All-Stars eviction.
Free to discuss nominations
A standing rule from past editions is Biggie’s gag order on nomination talk. That’s changing this season as housemates are free to discuss who they want to put up for possible eviction.
This week, Angel, Ilebaye, Doyin, Princess and Tolani Baj all nominated Venita. But, Ilebaye and Angel went with different options in the diary room.
Black Envelope challenge
To escape the BBNaija All-Stars eviction, housemates will have to hustle to find two envelopes every Monday at 7pm during the Black Envelope Challenge. One of the envelopes grants the finder immunity from eviction for the week.
Mercy Eke found the first black envelope of the season. Frodd found a second envelope that read “Better luck next time”.
Nominate a single housemate
Unlike the other seasons where housemates nominate two contestants for possible eviction, housemates are to mention a single name once they go into the diary room for their nomination session.
HOH privilege
As usual, the HOH automatically gets immunity for the week and can’t be nominated for possible eviction by fellow housemates. However, it’s unsure if the immunity also extends to his/her chosen BFFs (friends for the week).
This week, Adekunle emerged as HOH and chose Cross, Seyi, Soma and Frodd as BFFs. Big Brother extended immunity to them but said it might not be the case for other housemates in the coming weeks.

What Do You Need to Become a Musician in Nigeria?

Every week, Zikoko will share the hustle stories of Nigerians making it big in and out of the country. With each story, we’ll ask one crucial question in several ways: “How you do am?”
Mo’Believe’s hustle story took us through how he built a music career and launched two albums as an independent artist. Now we know how he did it. If you also want to make a career out of your musical talent, this guide is for you.

Firstly, know your sound
You’re probably considering a music career because you have a knack for singing or songwriting. That’s great, but to make a career out of it, it’s important to figure out what music genre you excel at. Is it rap, alté or afrobeats?
This may involve a lot of trial and error, but it’s a crucial step in discovering your sound and building a brand as a musician.
Hone your skills
You know how people who have a natural talent for, say, art or solving mathematical problems still go to school to learn better techniques and turn their talent into marketable skills? That’s how it is for musicians too.
Perfecting your craft requires consistent practice and an open approach to constructive criticism. You can do this through regular voice training, writing songs as your creative spirit directs, and getting people to listen to your work and share their thoughts. Apart from external validation, perfecting your craft will boost your confidence in your skills as a musician, and that confidence is key for the next step.
Put yourself out there
The music industry in Nigeria is already saturated with artists hoping to blow, but you’re trying to enter the same industry and get people to know your name. How do you put yourself out there?
- The choice of a producer is an important one: You can’t really call yourself a musician if you haven’t released a track, and that’s where music production comes in. Like Mo’Believe noted, music is made up of two important parts: songwriting and production. The production needs to convey the talent you already possess in a way that thrills the audience. The Nigerian audience tends to gravitate towards danceable music, but there’s still an audience for meaningful lyric-powerful music if that’s more your speed.
- Brand and market yourself: If you don’t do it, who will? Social media is an advantage because everyone is already there. Share your work on social media, and interact with your fans/anyone who shows appreciation for your work. You could even have a mailing list where you share updates with your audience so they feel invested in your journey.
- Don’t be shy to perform for free: Remember, the goal is putting yourself out there. New musicians aren’t always able to command as much performance fees as their well-known counterparts, but performance gives visibility. And visibility eventually leads to profitability.
You’ll need funds
Music is a career that’ll hold onto your resources like superglue. You’ll need money to record songs, network with others in the music industry, and promote your songs from time to time. So, for a musician just starting out in the industry, having a side gig
or glucose guardianwill be beneficial, something else that funds your music career before it becomes profitable. So, how do you make money?
Musicians in Nigeria make money in a number of ways:
- Music performances: This is pretty straightforward. Individuals or organisations may approach you to perform at their events for a fee. Upcoming musicians may also send proposals offering to perform at certain events for visibility or a small fee. Payment is usually determined by how much influence the musician wields.
- Revenue from streaming music: While payments from streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music or Deezer are quite small, it tends to build up based on how many streams are accumulated on your song. For example, Spotify pays between $0.003 to $0.005 per stream.
- Music shows or tours: Once you’ve gathered a reasonable fanbase, you can organise shows or tours and sell tickets.
- Partnerships and endorsements: This is usually an option for the more well-known ones, but musicians also make money from brand deals and endorsement payments.
- Record labels: Getting signed to a record label may be the goal for many young musicians, but you should take care to avoid falling into dubious record deals that leave the artist with little to no earnings. Before joining a record label, it’s best to do your research, preferably with a good entertainment lawyer.
The takeaway
Building a music career requires a lot of effort, passion and consistency. There’s no one way to “blow”, but consistency is definitely one of the ways.

What to Expect As Kunle Afolayan Wraps Filming for Anikulapo Series

It’s been over nine months since we last heard from Saro and Arolake, but that’s about to change and we’re mad excited.
Filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, finally wrapped up filming on the set of a four-part Netflix series, which takes a deeper dive into the Anikulapo-verse as we’ve come to know it. Afolayan has been generous with the behind-the-scenes content and we’re grateful. While we await the official release, here’s all we’ve gleaned from the director’s social media pages.
First, a recap of where we left Saro and Arolake
Afolayan left us with a wicked cliffhanger where we see a beat-up Saro who seemed to have escaped the wrath of the Ojumo people, after failing to bring the crown prince back to life. Recall that his malicious treatment of Arolake and insistence on marrying the princess of Ojumo Kingdom in exchange for bringing the prince back to life, caused her (Arolake) to leave.
But before leaving Saro, she empties the content of the pouch she took from the mythical Akala bird. On the mountaintop, the Akala bird returns and a seemingly unconscious Saro is jerked to life. What do we know so far?
An extended cast
Anikulapo The Series is poised to be bigger and packed with more action hence the reason for a more star-studded cast. Some of the new faces include:
Gabriel Afolayan
Titi Kuti
Funky Mallam
Owobo Ogunde
Jide Kosoko
Lateef Adedimeji
Layi Wasabi
Returning cast members
Some old cast members also make a return to the series, including Arolake (Bimbo Ademoye) and Saro (Kunle Remi).
Bimbo Ademoye (Arolake)
Kunle Remi (Saro)
Aisha Lawal (Olori Sunkanmi)
Sola Sobowale (Awarun)
Eyiyemi Afolayan (Princess Omowunmi)

A new lover for Arolake?
Remember that Arolake left Saro in Ojumo village after she couldn’t take his mistreatment anymore. Well, it looks like she’s going to find love again in the series, and her lucky man is Gabriel Afolayan. This picture looks like Kunle giving some directions for a couple’s scene.
Princess Omowunmi finds love?
In the movie, Princess Omowunmi fell in love with Saro from the moment he first visited the palace. But Saro only had his eyes on the king’s youngest wife, Olori Arolake. A jealous Omowunmi discovered Saro and Arolake’s affair and their plan to elope from the village. She ruined the plan by telling her mother, who reported the matter to the king.
It seems Princess Omowunmi might have her own lover (Lateef Adedimeji) in the series.
We have our fingers crossed as the Anikulapo series now moves to post-production before an official release date is announced.

Grocery Is Not What You Think It Is in Tinubu’s Nigeria

Nigerians always get creative in finding new and hilarious coping mechanisms when our leaders show us shege pro-max unprovoked, which is all the time.
A tray of groceries, chocolate crunchies, floating berries, sweetener and white caramel In case you’ve heard your friend or neighbour using the phrase “floating berries and groceries” loosely on Twitter, it’s not because they’re rich. Let’s bring you up to speed real quick.
Grocery
The most popular of the bunch, grocery in Jagaban’s Nigeria is simply the new name for garri.
Floating berries
Our sense of humour will always get us through the tough times because tell me why this is the new name for groundnut. Tears!
Spicy steak
There’s no need to feel intimidated if your friend goes on and on about spicy steak. In Tinubu’s Nigeria, that’s the new name for kilishi.
White caramel

Look no further, this is milk—whether powdered or evaporated.
Crunchy peas

One of the biggest scams of the agbado era is the new name for roasted corn.
Sweetener

Sugar has also gotten a fancy name. For example, if you want to have garri with milk, groundnut and sugar, you’ll say: “I want to have some groceries, floating berries, some sweetener topped with a dash of white caramel.”
Seafood

Please dear, you won’t be getting jumbo prawns or calamari. This is the new name for deep-fried panla. God, abeg.
Chocolate crunches

Again, no need for any form of intimidation if you see anyone using this term loosely in Tinubu’s Nigeria; they’re talking about kulikuli.

You’ve probably had it while it was cold and raining but since you were not informed at the time, now you know this is pap. A.k.a ogi.
