Everything That Happened In The Season Finale of MTN Y’ello Star

With the final episode that aired this past weekend, the first season of MTN Y’ello Star came to an end. We know. We’re bummed out too. But instead of being sad that it’s over, be glad it happened and that the show gave us the opportunity to be blessed with such amazing talent.

Before we say goodbye, let’s talk about everything that happened in that insane final episode.

The show began with a smooth performance of Burna Boy’s ‘YE’ by the top six that highlighted the growth and experience the contestants have gained all season.

After that, the hosts, Tobi Bakre and Hilda Bacci, called on Stephen Budd — a representative of the Henley business school and berkeley college of music partners of Afrinolly creative hub — to present all 14 contestants with certificates as a result of all that they learned in the hub. It was glorious watching the contestants receive their certificates with with beaming smiles.

This show also marked the first appearance of guest judge, Malik Yusef.

Following the distribution of certificates was another group performance by the top 6. They performed Shakira’s 2010 hit, Waka Waka.

Then it was time for the top 6 to give us solo performances. Up first was Gideon with his rendition of ‘Let’s Stay Together’ by AI Green. Second was Dotti performing ‘Cherry Oh, Baby’ by Eric Donaldson.

    • Gideon – ‘Let’s Stay Together’ by AI Green
    • Dotti – ‘Chery Oh, Baby’ by Eric Donaldson
    • Freeborn – ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Celine Dion
    • Storm – ‘Please Please Please’ – by James Brown
    • Ceaser – ‘Sweet Mother’ by Nico Mbarga
    • Fayfay Diamond – ‘Unbreak My Heart’ by Toni Braxton

For the 3rd group performance of the night, the top 6 gave a rendition of the MTN Y’ello Star theme song.

Then came the time to announce the top 5 who will go on to join the 2021 Berklee summer program. Gideon, Caesar, Fayfay Diamond, Storm, and Dotti all made it into the top 5. And Freeborn didn’t.

But Freeborn got a surprise. She was still given a ticket to join the 2021 Berklee summer program and got the chance to see her kids.

After this, the contestants’ final positions were announced.

    • 5th – Fayfay Diamond
    • 4th – Ceaser
    • 3rd – Gideon
    • 2nd – Storm
    • 1st – Dotti

There you have it, ladies & gentlemen. Dotti is the winner of the 1st season of MTN Y’ello Star.

    See you in season 2!

  • The Finalists Of MTN Y’ello Star Competition Reveal Their Greatest Lessons

The Finalists Of MTN Y’ello Star Competition Reveal Their Greatest Lessons

How does it feel to be a finalist in a keenly-contested competition? In this interview, the finalists of the MTN Y’ello Star competition talk to us about their experience: the lessons, the fears, the joys, and the journey ahead.

    FayFay

Right now, I feel excited. This has been a very enlightening experience. I have come to understand that music is more than just singing. There is the business aspect, and it is very detailed too. I didn’t know anything about this before.

I believe these lessons will affect my music greatly. I am currently relearning, and gathering new ideas. My dreams have grown significantly bigger. Before, I was confused about how to combine fashion with music. But now, with the lessons I have picked up from the classes, I am learning how to manage both and make the best out of it. I am eager to put these things into use when I am out of the house. Overall, I’ll rate my experience here as a 9.

    Ceaser

It has been God all the way. That’s the honest truth. Only God. I could not have done this on my own. The learning process has been so enlightening. And from the first time till now, I think my performance has improved. I have gotten better, and I am also catching up with the essential things I used to leave out of my previous performances. My performance of “Many Rivers To Cross” was a great way to learn.

Right now, I am looking forward to being a better musician than I was before coming here. I have a lot to offer, and I cannot wait for the whole world to experience it.

    Storm

The greatest lesson for me is uniqueness. Everyone here is unique in their own ways. We all have the different and unique approach we bring to singing and performances. And one thing I am looking forward to is how I can make my own uniqueness work for me.

I’m grateful to the judges and the teachers. Their corrections and lessons teach me the best way to stretch myself and give my best.

    Dotti

The experience so far has been mind-blowing. Being in the house has renewed my love for music. I can’t imagine myself not singing. I think I have been given a great gift that the world needs to experience.

    Freeborn

This has been a myriad of lessons. Right from music, to business, to my own personal self. It’s been a session of growth and development. The greatest discovery for me is that there’s more to music. Music is spiritual, it is professional. It is many more. I didn’t know all these before. I didn’t even know that there were some courses you could take to help your development. This has been a complete 10. It is my first and it has surpassed all my expectations.

    Gideon

I feel excited to be part of the finalists. The tension has reduced a bit, but there is still tension because the race is not over yet. I have learned that music is a business that transcends just singing. As a performer, the vibes you carry matters. And if there’s any greater lesson I have picked up, it is that you can kill two birds with one stone.

I like to think that I have found my sound vocally. Before coming into the house, I wasn’t sure about a lot of things. I wasn’t as precise too. But now, there’s a visible level of precision, a sense that I know where I am going with this.

  • It’s Week Two And We’re Even More Excited

It’s Week Two And We’re Even More Excited

It’s another week of MTN Y’ello and it remains super exciting. I had fun talking to some of the contestants last week so I decided to chat with a couple more and it was even more fun. Here’s what they had to say.

    Jesse D

Participating in this competition isn’t just about winning for me. It’s about learning and gaining more experience in the music scene. I’ve been drumming for four years now and that has been my major passion in music. It’s why they call me Jesse Drums. I also play the keyboard.

A major challenge for me is that, because I’m visually impaired, people think that pity is the only reason I’m in this competition. They don’t see my talents, all they can see is the fact that I’m blind. This hurts me a lot but I have no choice but to be strong, push on and prove them wrong.

I’m greatly inspired by Cobhams. We have the same disability and we both face the same challenges. If I could choose a mentor, it would totally be him.

    Storm

My name is Emeka but everyone calls me Storm. I’m an anatomist by education but a data analyst by training. Most importantly, I’m a singer and songwriter.

I’d love to win the competition, but more since I arrived, I’ve found that there’s a lot more to gain. There are a lot of talents to learn from and connections too. MTN Y’ello Star offers a large platform to make our voices heard and I’m definitely going to make good use of it.

I decided that I was going to do music when I heard Justin Bieber’s Baby in 2010 and I haven’t looked back since then.

    Dave Wills

I’m Dave Wills, and I’ve been a singer/songwriter for a couple of years. I fell in love with music when I was in SS1, just from drumming on tables and singing with friends. I took it more seriously in the university and over the past couple of years, it became clear to me that this was what I was meant to do.

I really believe I have a bright future in music. Right after this competition, I’m going to release an EP to let the world know who I really am.

I’m inspired by many musicians, but top among them are Brymo, Adekunle Gold, and Kiss Daniel. They are my favourites. My music is greatly influenced by MI because I love his style and lyricism. If I had to pick a mentor though, it would have to be Mr Eazi. He has such a knack for the digital music business and is quite focuses too.

  • What’s Up With The MTN Y’ello Star Contestants?

What’s Up With The MTN Y’ello Star Contestants?

Day after day, the contestants in the MTN Y’ello Star competition are waxing stronger in their dedication to both the craft and the business side of music.

This week, the contestants put many of the things they were being taught to good use. They had a business masterclass on the concept of Resonance, taught by Barry Van Zyl of the Henley Business School.

They also had a Vocal masterclass where they discussed the rudiments of Enhancing Tonal Quality. This showed very much in the mesmerizing performances they gave the audience.

Every contestant brought their A-game. This performance is what determines who stays and who is nominated for elimination, and you bet nobody wants to be put up for elimination.

    Major takeaway from the show:

The hosts, Tobi Bakre and Hilda B asked an important question: What is the cut-off mark for a celebrity in the music world? That is, what metric does a singer have to pass before being considered “blown”?

    Here’s how the judges answered:

Olisa Adibua: The cut off for celebrity is when the audience laps up your song, when there is a hunger for an anticipated release. Getting to this point needs quality in terms of songwriting, production, and your team.

Banky W: A hit song that the general public sings along to is also a sign of being blown. But this consistency has to be maintained with more quality.
