  • #NairaLife: 10 of the Most-Loved Stories of 2023

    #NairaLife: 10 of the Most-Loved Stories of 2023

2023 might have been the trickiest year for the naira yet. The currency went through more ups and downs than our constantly embattled national grid and affected Nigerians’ relationship with money in more ways than before.

Per usual, NairaLife had one goal this year: Finding answers to how Nigerians are making, spending — and even losing — their money. How has money (or the lack of it) affected the quality of lives?

The stories we told sparked conversations, offered insights into subjects people seldom think about and caused some “God, when?”s

Here are ten stories you couldn’t stop talking about, and which deserve a second read.

These are the stories that did the most numbers:

    1. How do people in the seats of power live?

This story broke the internet and received mixed reactions when it was published. Some were pissed to read about the extravagant life this politician’s daughter lives, and others weren’t too surprised.
But one thing is clear: it’s important we have these difficult conversations about money. As Ruka, our editor-in-chief, explained in this thread, these conversations are a stark reminder of the country we live in.

    2. She has over $150k in savings but is only 50% happy

I had to physically stop myself from converting $150k to naira when I read this story the first time. This lawyer should hold a savings masterclass. She has three savings buckets in dollars. When asked why she put her financial happiness at just 5/10, she said, “I need more money. I want to be able to travel and do more for myself without having to touch any of my savings buckets.”

    Fair enough.

    3. There are side gigs, and there ARE side gigs

I’m not sure if “side gig” is an accurate description of the other jobs this finance guy does. I mean, if your main salary pays ₦1.2m/month and a side gig pays as much as ₦8m, which one deserves the tag of “main income source”?

Anyway, you’ll definitely learn a thing or two from his story.

    4. How do you own real estate worth over ₦40m on a civil servant salary?

The answer is years of planning, relationships and access to loans. This NairaLife is one of the most insightful ones I’ve read so far. I’ve never found civil services appealing, but after reading this, it’s not looking so bad.

    5. The writer making bank in crypto’s volatile market

If peer pressure ever pushes you to crypto, consider what the content writer in this story said first: “I feel the best way to make money in crypto is to get a job in crypto. So, while I hold some coins and try my best to avoid trading, I watch out for job opportunities in the crypto market. It’s the perfect blend of stability and risk.”

That said, he’s raking in a cool $1200/month following his own advice.

These are the stories you absolutely need to read:

    6. A Nairalife sponsored entirely by faith in God

This was the first Nairalife story I wrote, so it has a special place in my heart. He’s a full-time missionary who should be earning ₦49k/month, but he hardly gets paid because his pay depends on donations.

I’ll never forget the confidence with which this missionary said, “I move with this confidence that I have God and can never be stranded.” Literal chills.

    7. He made 100x his salary in three years, and it started from a bet

You know that proverb, “What an elder sees sitting down, a child can’t see even if they climb the tallest tree”? It’s a good thing the data engineer in this #NairaLife didn’t follow that. His dad wanted him to join the military, but he chose computers. We can agree that decision paid off, because he now makes ₦3.5m/month.

    8. From almost-yahoo boy to POS agent

I don’t think I’ve rooted for someone as much as I do the 23-year-old in this story. He’s been hustling since he was very young and left home when he was 16. No, his parents weren’t dead. They just weren’t present.

At his lowest, he almost turned to a life of crime. But a chance encounter changed the course of his life.

    9. The stay-at-home dad who’s choosing his family over money

It’s unusual to find a dad who chooses to do a “woman’s job” by becoming their children’s primary caregiver in Nigeria’s heavily patriarchal society, so I knew I had to tell this story.

Fun fact: This interview was interrupted several times when his kids cried, and he had to attend to them. I thought it was the cutest thing ever.

    10. Navigating a finance-threatening mental disorder

I first heard of the term “dyscalculia” during the interview for this story. This 25-year-old subject has struggled with numbers for as long as she can remember, and as an adult, it’s progressed into an inability to handle money and poor financial decision-making.

On top of that, she was diagnosed with Borderline personality disorder in 2022, which explains her constant struggle to keep jobs. Her story really gives individuals’ relationship with money a whole new perspective.

Abroad Life: 10 of the Most-Read Stories of 2022

We spent the year telling you some of the most interesting stories of Nigerians living abroad and here are the top 10 stories people loved.

    1. “If I Knew What I Know Now, I Wouldn’t Have Come to Canada” — Abroad Life

There’s often a lot of talk about why you should move abroad, but not much is said about the not-so-colourful sides of it like loneliness, finances, and the often terrible weather.

The subject of this story relied on Youtubers for her idea of what it’s like to live in Canada, and she found out the hard way that they left out a lot of things.

    2. “Canada Isn’t All That. Nigeria Is Just Bad” — Abroad Life

If you thought that being in a place without drinking water and access to the internet for a 10-hour drive could only happen in Nigeria, think again. The subject of this story faced a reality of Canada that was completely different from everything she thought she knew. From job-hunting to the cold and then the racism that still exist, Canada’s PR is in the trenches this year.

    3. “The Dating Scene in the UK Is Scary”- Abroad Life

The next time Nigerians in the UK tell you the dating scene is wild over there, believe them. The subject of this story was left hanging by a UK babe after travelling across the country to see her. His takeaway from the experience: UK babes don’t really care about you.

    4. “Nigerians, Remove China From Your Japa Plans”- Abroad Life

The subject of this story grew up watching Chinese movies, and that made her fall in love with the language.

She fell so much in love that she decided to move to China for school. When she did, everything she thought about the place changed forever.

    5. “I’m Scared to Show My Mum Who I’ve Become in Russia”- Abroad Life

This story is relatable for most people. Moving out of the home for university, then changing so much and so drastically that it’s better to just maintain an image at home.

The subject of this story lives a double life every day in Russia. The one he lives in reality, and the one his parents think he lives.

    6. “I Was Treated Like a Criminal in Seychelles”- Abroad Life

Seychelles is often a favourite holiday destination for Nigerians, but the experience of this story’s subject paints a different picture. He eventually had a fun vacation, but not after being treated like a criminal at the airport.

    7. “Coming Back to Canada Was the Wrong Decision”- Abroad Life

If you’ve ever wondered why someone would leave the abroad to come back to live in Nigeria, you’ll get your answer in this story. BlWas it a good decision? You’ll find out too.

    8. “Hungary Is a Dead Place, and I’m Not Even Kidding” – Abroad Life

The highlight of this story is the fact that he doesn’t receive money from home anymore because Nigerian banking system makes his allowance arrive four months late at least.

    9. “My Husband Missed Our Wedding Because He Couldn’t Leave Canada” — Abroad Life

My highlight of the story is the fact that she got all she ever wanted in the end, japa included.

The subject of this story got a visa to the UK within three months after she got tired of waiting for Canada to give her a visa. But on getting there, she found a couple of things she didn’t like, such as having too much electricity and over-politeness.

    10. “My Friends in the UK Make Life Amazing for Me” — Abroad Life

This Nigerian doctor moved to the UK because he didn’t want to practice medicine in Nigeria. It turned out to be one of the best decisions he’s made, has he’s having the time of his life after reuniting with friends in the UK.

  • Love Life: 10 of the Most-Read Stories of 2022

Love Life: 10 of the Most-Read Stories of 2022

Love Life is a Zikoko weekly series about love, relationships, situationships, entanglements and everything in between.

I started writing Love Life in August of this year and I’ve suffered a lot of “God, when?”, “God, what?” and “God, how?”

Listening to people describe their romantic relationships has been fun and each story holds a special place in my heart, but out of the hundreds, here are the top 10 most-read stories of this year.

    1) Love Life: She Used Food and Netflix to Get Into My Heart

“Cynthia*, 30, and Ezinne*, 29, have been dating for six months. On Love Life, they talk about getting in touch after reading each other’s stories on Zikoko and falling for each other despite being married.”

This is one of those love stories you read and a part of you goes “hmm”. On one hand you’re happy for the love and the other, you just keep thinking about the people getting hurt along the way.

    2) Love Life: Therapy Helped Us Be Better For Each Other

“Salem, 26, and Precious, 26, have been dating for three years. For Love Life, they talk about meeting on Instagram, starting a long distance relationship and couple’s therapy.”

Most times when you hear about couple’s therapy, it’s from the pov of a married couple. It’s interesting to see there are people who aren’t married but are willing to try couple’s therapy just so they can work out.

    3) Love Life: We Don’t Have to Fight to Understand Each Other

Uju, 45, and Sirry, 40, have been dating for five months. On Love Life, they talk about meeting on Twitter, navigating dating as older women with kids and being in an intercultural relationship.

Dating is hard enough, but dating with children? I can’t even begin to imagine. However, that’s Uju and Sirry’s reality. It’s interesting to see just how much the dynamics of dating changes with age and children in the mix.

    4) Love Life: We’d Been Committed to Each Other Long Before We Started Dating

“Uyai, 33, and Ayo, 28, have been dating for a year. On Love Life, they talk about meeting on Instagram, dating each other while they were in primary relationships, and eventually, breaking up with those partners to be together.”

Have you ever met someone and just known they were the one? If you have, you’d probably understand exactly how Uyai and Ayo felt. If you haven’t, well you should read so you’ll know what it’s like.

    5) Love Life: The Day We Started Dating Is the Day I Stopped Smoking

“Naomi, 27, and Chiby, 28, have been dating for two years. On Love Life, they talk about meeting in secondary school, remaining friends and finding love in each other at South.”

It’s interesting to see the lengths people will go for love. I wonder if there’s anything I’ll be able to give up because I fell in love with someone.

    6) Love Life: We’re Deliberate About Our Faith

“Seun, 23, and Àdìó, 26, have been dating for four months. On Love Life, they talk about meeting at Salt and Light Christian camp, how they flirted their way into a relationship after a seven-year old friendship and reuniting physically on Valentine’s day this year.”

    7) Love Life: I Didn’t Want to Date Him Because I Didn’t Want to Bleed on Him

“Olanrewaju*, 27, and Temi*, 27, have been dating for a year. On Love Life, they talk about meeting on Twitter, starting a relationship after reading a Zikoko article and  their plans for the future.”

Note: Second couple on this list to find love through a Zikoko article. We’re not saying there’s a pattern, but…

    8) Love Life: She Played Ludo With My Heart for One Month

“Opeyemi, 30, and Sandra, 27, dated for a year and seven months before getting married. On Love Life, they talk about starting a relationship in the DMs, a horrible first date at Opeyemi’s house and why their families and close friends found out they were getting married on Twitter.”

I think this is one of the most turbulent relationships we’ve had the pleasure to publish.

    9) Love Life: She Fits Me Like a Glove

“Jola, 25, and Oyin, 26, have been dating for a year. On Love Life, they talk about meeting on Twitter, becoming friends and talking for nine months before starting a relationship where they still haven’t had a fight.”

    10) Love Life: We Became Lovers by Accident

“Murphy, 25 and Susan, 22 have been together for almost five years. This week on Zikoko’s Love Life, they talk about dating by accident, breaking up at least three times, and getting engaged.”

How many breakups is too many breakups? According to this couple, three breakups is definitely not too much.

  • A Week In The Life: 10 Of The Most-Read Stories Of 2021

A Week In The Life: 10 Of The Most-Read Stories Of 2021

A Week In The Life” is a weekly Zikoko series that explores the working-class struggles of Nigerians. It captures the very spirit of what it means to hustle in Nigeria and puts you in the shoes of the subject for a week.

2021 was a long year. I know it and you definitely know it. I wrote my first “A Week In The Life” story of 2021 on the 5th of January. It was about an interstate driver who had a girlfriend in almost every Nigerian state he visited. This awe-inspiring, mind-boggling, larger-than-life, yet commonplace story would set the tone for some of the episodes in the series.

As the year comes to a close, and with over 36 stories under the “A Week In The Life” flagship, I’ve picked 10 of the most-read stories from the series. These stories were picked based on the number of page views they had, the conversations they sparked and the general audience reaction to them.

Whether you started reading this series last year, this year, or even last week, here are some stories that our audience definitely enjoyed reading and sharing.

    Dive in:

    1) When I’m In Front Of A Camera, I Feel Like Wizkid Or Davido — A Week In The Life Of A Pornstar

Forget everything you know because this story will challenge it. After failing to get into Nollywood, Juliet, the subject of this story decided to go into acting porn. She talks about the stigma involved in her job, not being ashamed to show her face in her videos and how powerful she feels in front of a camera.

According to Juliet, “During video shoots, I tell my men that it’s acting we’re acting so they shouldn’t get carried away thinking it’s their girlfriend they’re fucking. I also make it clear that they must not cum in me —  they can cum on my laps, face, tummy but not inside me.”

    2) Manager By Day, Sugar Baby At Night: A Week In The Life

The subject of this story has gone from swearing not to sleep with married men to not refusing their advances.

The result? A lot of gifts and houses. Why did she suddenly change her mind and go down the sugar baby route?

What’s it like being an unpaid full housewife? It’s a lot of thankless hard work, unnecessary suffering and acceptance in the grand scheme of things.

The heaviness in this story still haunts me today. See why here.

    4) My Life Ended When I started NYSC” — A Week In The Life Of A Tired Youth Corps Member

If you’ve done NYSC, this story will make you angry, sad, and confused. Why? Because the suffering is relatable and pointless. For this episode, a youth corps member without a place of primary assignment talks about the bleakness of her days, being frustrated by the NYSC scheme and the ways she sparks joy in her life.

I’m also thankful that God take libido bless me to be able to keep everyone satisfied. It’s grace. I be pure Igbo guy, I strong die.

  • Sex Life: 10 Of The Most-Read Stories In 2021

Sex Life: 10 Of The Most-Read Stories In 2021

Sex — or talking about sex — is generally regarded as taboo in Nigerian society. But it’s important that we talk about sex. From how we discover our sexualities to how we satisfy our sexual curiosities. We learn so much when we talk about these things openly and honestly.

To help these conversations happen, we’ve been anonymously telling the stories of Nigerians and how they navigate sex through our Sex Life flagship.

So as we say goodby to the year 2021 and it is only right that we take a look back at the 10 Sex Life stories you loved the most.

    10. What if sex came with a report card?

In this edition, we spoke to a 29-year-old woman who spoke to us about how she grades her male sexual partners. You should really read this story — if for nothing else, just so you can see the grading system. One partner scored an E8 (this is bad) in Basic Human Decency. Yikes.

    9. To Nut or Not To Nut?

Doesn’t matter to the subject of this edition.

After a series of horrible sexual experiences, this 20-year-old woman finally starts to have pleasant sexual experiences. She even describes foreplay with one of her partners as “stupendously excellent”.

Having an orgasm is great but for this subject, it’s all about the journey. So maybe you get there, maybe you don’t but make sure it’s a fun ride.

    8. “Ruthless sex. The kind devoid of emotion”

Those were the words this edition’s subject described the sex she enjoys. The 21-year-old woman tells us of her sex life and all the ways BDSM made it better. From blindfolding to gagging, she finds out how all of these ‘ruthless’ and very importantly, consensual methods thrill her.

“But how?” You may ask. The story reveals plenty.

    7. Yes you hear them. But are you listening?

The subject of this edition was not. Not for a while.

The 33-year-old heterosexual man tells us about his journey to having good sex. He tells us about his first sex party and the one time he had sex with a man, just to see if it was something he’d be into.

He says his sex life with his 8 partners has been great because he’s learnt to listen to the women in his life to make sure they’re getting the most pleasure.

    6. Playing catch-up with sex

This edition’s subject is a 36-year-old man who has slept with almost 200 women. Why? Well, he had what he considered a late sexual awakening and so as a young man he felt the need to catch up. To have all of the sex.

From his perspective that came with a lot of stress. The sheer energy it must demand to be with multiple people.

But how did he get here? Read and find out.

    5. When you’re both fine with “ruining” the friendship with sex

Can we all agree there’d be less pressure if friends who found each other attractive just had sex with each other? No? Okay.

This 25-year-old woman gets it though. It makes sense to have sex with someone you already consider to be a safe place. She also tells us about discovering her attraction to women and can you guess who was involved? Rihanna, of course.

    4. Practice makes perfect

You may think you’re not killing it at sex now but what you may need is a number of people to safely explore things with. That’s what happened with this edition’s subject.

The 25-year-old woman is currently having great sex after taking the time to sharpen her skills with 4 different men on her roster.

    3. How do you tell this story?

This story was met with a lot of shock and people were rightly appalled by some of the things they read. We had to include an editor’s note and several trigger warnings because we wanted to protect any members of our audience who may be triggered by stories of sexual abuse and assault.

But the story is up because it is a real sex life story of a 19-year-old Nigerian whose experiences are as valid as the next person’s. There is a lot that can be done about the way sex is taught to our children. Beyond informing them so they are aware, it is also important so that they know they have a voice to speak up when they feel things go wrong.

    2. You did what? Where?

This story starts at Redeem camp. And that’s really all I need to say for you to understand what you’re getting into.

The 26-year-old subject of this story tells us about the many places he’s had sex.

    1. She eats danger for breakfast

This was the most read Sex Life story this year and I must tell you, it deserves this spot. The 20-year-old woman in this story is not kidding when she says she likes danger.

From the first time she got slapped in the middle of sex to an actual kink for sleeping with encumbered individuals, this story thrills and thrills.

  • What She Said: 10 of the Most-Read Stories in 2021

What She Said: 10 of the Most-Read Stories in 2021

Ranging from their relationship with religion, death, family, and sex work. So, to wrap up your 2021, here are ten of the most-read What She Said stories of 2021. Enjoy!

1 What She Said: My Mother’s Tragedy Taught Me To Live My Best Life

Death has a way of giving us a new outlook on life. For the Uju Anya, the woman in this article, the death of her mother allowed for her to realise how short life is. It also taught her about happiness wherever she can. Read more here

Her death was one of the things that caused me to understand how short life was, that stress and heartache could cause chronic and ultimately fatal illness, and how important it was to find happiness and fulfilment while I was still here to enjoy it.

2 What She Said: I Love My Children, But I’ve Never Liked Them

What is the difference between loving someone and liking them? How can you love your children and not like them? Is it possible to not like your children? A lot of people believe that women automatically like their children simply because they birthed them. However, this is not the same in this womam’s case. Read more here

I would spend hours staring at my child, expecting to become happy by just looking at her. Nothing happened. I faked happiness though. I faked the tears. Everyone around me was so excited; I just had to. And I couldn’t tell anyone.

3 What She Said: I Almost Left My Husband Because He Was An Unbeliever

Religion or a lack of is a major part of Nigerians’ lives. How then do you navigate a relationship with someone who does not have the same belief system as you do? Well, read here to find out what changed in the life of this 62-year-old woman.

My parents found out when they dropped by his house and he asked them why they were there. When they got back, they asked me, “Dupe, did it not take you some time to become a Christian? What makes you think he won’t?” And so we got married.

4 What She Said: How My Boyfriend Became My Stalker

In this story, we are introduced to a 23-year-old Nigerian woman who was being blackmailed and stalked by her then boyfriend. She talks about how the police and lawyers had to get involved, and the role her aunt played in all of it. Read here.

I travelled for a bit. He found out where I travelled to and actually followed me to the state, but he didn’t know exactly where I was. He tried to reach out to me through his useless friends that were also cheating on their girlfriends and wives. I blocked all of them.

5 What She Said: My Ex-Boyfriend Stalked Me For Three Years

Getting broken up with must mean you are free to date again, right? Unfortunately, not for this 29-year-old woman in this story. After being cheated on and broken up with, she tried to move on, but her ex wasn’t letting her. From online harasssment to threatening to leak her nudes, this woman went through a lot in the hands of her ex-boyfriend turned stalker. Read more here.

The day I posted a picture of me and my new boyfriend online, I noticed that some random account on Twitter was favouriting all my photos. Not just the recently posted ones. The account went as far back as a year. I ignored it because I assumed it was all those random bots. Then I started getting DMs from another anonymous account who said that they had my nudes and would deal with me.

6 What She Said: I Guard My Relationship with God Jealously

What’s the most important thing your life? How far will you go to protect it? For Koromone Koroye, the woman in this article, her relationship with God means the most to her, and she guards it with all of her heart. That’s why she kept trying to find a community that understands the importance of her relationship. Read more here

My experience there led me to do some research. As I read the Bible, my relationship with God grew. Nobody “led” me to Christ. I just found myself being like, “This makes sense and I think I learnt it wrong for a long time.”

7 What She Said: People Call Me An Ashewo Because I Travel Alone

“Ashawo”, “Prostitute”, “Whore”. These are some of the words used to describe women irrespective of what they do. For the woman in this story, flying around the world in first and business class is enough for her to be labelled an “ashawo”. Read more here to find out how she navigates it.

I never feel safe travelling alone because men have harassed me physically and verbally. They assume I’m a prostitute because I travel alone. At the airport, people call me ashewo.

8 What She Said: My Mum Hates Me

The 18-year-old in this story is convinced her mother hates her. You might hate your mother too if she put pepper and hot water in your vagina and eyes when you were 11. Read more about her relationship with her mother here.

It was terrible. When the lockdown intensified, my mum made me stop eating at home because I wasn’t dropping money for food.  So, I would wake up in the morning and go to my friend’s house next door. We would work out, cook and eat. She fed me for about three months. Then, my ex complained I spent too much time there, so I wasn’t allowed to go there anymore.

9 What She Said: My Current Job Is Having Rich Friends

Have you ever considered having friends a full-time job? Do you think its possible to live a somewhat expensive lifestyle on your friends dime? Well, the woman here answers a few questions on what it is like having rich friends and how it’s basically her job. Read more about having rich friends as a job here.

Sometimes, I can get as much as  ₦600,000 a month. It’s not constant but I’d say that I make more than two to three million naira every year just from having rich friends.

10 What She Said: I Love Being A Prostitute

There are a lot of misconceptions about what it is like being a prostitute. From how much they earn to how they even get involved in the business. In this What-She-Said, the 23-year-old woman talks us through her life as a prostitute and how much she loves her job. Read here.

I’m aware that being a prostitute is not a sustainable idea. I’d no longer be as young or as flexible as I am now and would earn less and no longer be as sought after, so I’m going to milk it for as long as I can.
