  • The  Zikoko Guide to Drinking at a Party

Drinking can be fun. But it’s not just as simple as going to a party and getting a drink. There are rules to this thing. Here’s the Zikoko guide to drinking at a party.

    Eat before you go

If you drink heavily on an empty stomach, you’ll get so drunk that you’ll end up sleeping under Oshodi bridge and not knowing how you got there. Let’s not even begin to talk about the hangover you’ll have. Abeg eat and eat well.

    Know what you’re drinking

You may think you’re drinking palm wine, but what if it’s garri water mixed with tequila? Don’t look at me like that. People are mixing weird things these days and calling it a cocktail.

    Drink with friends

Not just for safety but also because it’s more fun. Don’t sit by yourself in one corner sipping tequila. What was now the whole point of leaving your house?

Quiz: What Kind of Drink Are You?

    Dance

If you’ve been drinking for quite a bit, stop and do some legwork. Dancing is a good way to sober up.

    Don’t drink too much

Know your limits. Don’t allow oversabi or peer pressure to make you drink more than you can handle. Once you begin to feel tipsy, stop drinking. Drinking dehydrates the body, so find water to balance things out.

Find out if the drinks are free

Just because you’re at a party doesn’t automatically mean drinks are free. Ask questions before you end up using your salary to pay for drinks.

    Don’t mix drinks

Choose one drink, and stick to it the entire night. Having a gin and tonic, followed by wine, followed by vodka shots, is not a good combination. It’s a recipe for a drunken disaster, and may upset your stomach.

    During drinking games, drink water

With all the playing and laughing, you can easily get carried away during games. To avoid getting so drunk you begin to hear double, drink water as often as you can in between games.

If you don’t know what to drink, go for a gin and tonic

If all sorts of drink names are being thrown at you and you’re confused, go for a gin and tonic (G&T). A G&T is a classic sweet cocktail that everyone loves.

  • Wait, Who Invented Chapman?

I resumed work yesterday after shaking my ass on a yacht a two-week holiday in Dubai. And the first thing that came to me was… chapman. Maybe I’m not ready to return to work.

But as life will have it, it turns out, there’s actually a fascinating history around chapman. I’m about to give y’all a history lesson no one asked for.

I used to think chapman was one of those drinks created abroad that Nigerians started making here. It turns out, chapman was actually created in Nigeria by a Nigerian.

It’s been up for debate about who invented this mocktail. Legend has it that chapman was created at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos, Nigeria, by a bartender who was requested to mix something special for a British client named Chapman. After doing serious research, it turns out this is false.

    Who actually invented chapman?

The Ikoyi Club was not where chapman was created, nor was it created for a Mr Chapman. It was invented by Mr Sam Alamutu, a renowned professional hotelier who, at one point, was referred to as the doyen of Nigeria’s hospitality sector.

Sam Alamutu was a well-known professional Hotelier. He was among the few young Nigerians to be offered a scholarship to study in the UK, where he studied catering and hotel management at the Huddersfield Polytechnic, Yorkshire, from 1955 to 1958.

He later became the director of the Nigeria Tourist Board and the first national President of the Nigeria Hotel and Catering Institute.

He spent most of his time in top Nigerian hotels and was the director of a few of them: The Lagos Hotel, Hill Station Hotel, Jos, Western Hotel and Cross River Hotel Limited.

    How did Chapman come about?

The creation of chapman is a story of love. Mr Alamutu was a man who loved to attend social events, where he’d drink the finest of wines or champagne. He’d usually attend these events with his wife who didn’t drink alcohol. It bothered him because he thought the love of his life deserved better than soft drinks, so he decided to create something more exotic that she could drink at events, especially those hosted by him. He experimented with different beverages and eventually came up with a mix of lemon and orange with a dash of Angostura bitters. She loved it.

With the positive feedback he had received, he went one step further and added cucumber, a lemon slice, and a cherry on a toothpick; this is how the renowned cocktail came to be.

The reason it’s associated with Ikoyi, it’s because one of the first places Mr Alamutu created the mocktail for public consumption was at the Ikoy Hotel, Lagos. Due to his influence in the hospitality industry, he was able to take the drink across different hotels in Nigeria. Because of its unique taste, more bars and hotels continued to adapt the recipe, and now chapman has become one of the most popular drinks this side of the world.

    Give Mr Alamutu his flowers.

  • Try These 8 Hacks to Make Your Alcohol More Interesting

The weekend is here, and if there’s one thing I’ll do, it’s recommend different ways people can drink alcohol. Today you’ll be discovering ways to make your alcohol more interesting.

    Vodka gummy bears

I like to call this the lazy and fast way of making a cocktail because you don’t have to do a lot of mixing, and you still get some colour and flavour in your drink. All you need is a bottle of vodka, a bag of gummy bears and a medium-sized bowl.

You can try this with one or multiple-flavoured gummies. Put the gummy bears in a bowl, pour in vodka, then leave for about 5 hours. For a deeper flavour, you can leave it overnight. Once it’s done, you can chew the gummy bears (which have soaked up alcohol) and drink the vodka.

Add Ribena to your dry red wine

This was something I tried yesterday. I was about to drink Ribena when I remembered that I had some leftover red wine in the fridge. My decision to combine both is one of the best decisions I’ve made this week; it’s like heaven on your tongue. Works best with dry reds such as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and the likes.

    Pour alcohol into your watermelon

I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard about this. So why haven’t you tried it yet?  Just cut a narrow but deep hole (it has to be deep so that the drink will seep through) into your watermelon in the shape of your liquor bottle, turn over the bottle and put the mouth in the hole and let the alcohol pour into the melon.

Leave it until it’s empty or until you think the alcohol poured in is enough. Put the watermelon in the fridge to chill for about four hours, then cut it up when you’re ready.

Use alcohol to make ice cubes

Normally, when you want a really cold drink, you tend to add ice cubes. To do things a little differently this time, make your ice cubes out of whatever alcohol you’re drinking. If you’re having whiskey, fill your ice tray with whiskey. That way, when the ice melts, it’s not diluting your alcohol, it’s just adding to it.

    Experiment with Skittles

Have you ever tried adding Skittles to, say, tequila? Here’s your cue. . Just put Skittles in a cup, fill the cup with tequila, and leave it overnight. You can do this with one or different flavours of Skittles. A fun way to have tequila shots, it won’t stop it from burning your throats though.

    Tequila and pasta

A good way to eat and drink at the same time, don’t you think? This recipe doesn’t necessarily contain that much tequila, but it’s a good way to mix alcohol and pasta and end up with a delicious recipe. If you’re interested in seeing how this goes in detail, find out how to make it on All Recipes.

    Try Baileys and coffee

Instead of adding milk or cream to your coffee, add half a glass of Baileys instead. What better way to kickstart the morning? Besides, Baileys is a lot creamier.

    Heineken and sprite

I genuinely think beer is bitter, and that’s why i’ve included this combination. To make things interesting, you can add whiskey. That way, the alcohol content increases and the taste also gets better.

  • To Increase Your Productivity, Drink These Instead of Coffee

I had two glasses of wine at 12 p.m last Tuesday while working from home. The first thing I noticed was a sudden increase in energy. Also, ideas just started flowing through my head. And then I said to myself, “So coffee isn’t the only thing that can give you this feeling?” Later, I started thinking about coffee alternatives that slap even harder and increase productivity at work.

Below are the best coffee alternatives I learnt.

    Wine

Have you ever been wine tipsy? It makes you feel relaxed and happy, like you don’t have a care in the world. And that’s exactly why wine will help in boosting your productivity. Sip a glass at work, and no amount of stress can get to you.

    The tears of your enemies

If there’s one thing that’ll motivate you to work harder and faster, it’s knowing that your enemies will be pained by your success. The more successful you become at work, the more your enemies cry. Drink their tears to fuel your energy.

    Kolaq Alagbo

Kolaq Alagabo is a drink that is apparently known for enhancing sexual performance. My thought process is, if you drink it and don’t fornicate, you can channel all of that energy into your work. Take risk and succeed.

    Gym Pre-Workout Supplement

If people at the gym can take it to exercise their bodies, why can’t you take it to exercise your brain to make your work faster and better?

ALSO READ: You People Are Spending This Much Money on Gym?

    Water

Water nourishes your body and improves attentiveness, alertness, and energy. All of which help with productivity. Staying hydrated will keep your productivity levels high.

    Orange juice

The thing that may be affecting your productivity may be this heat that we’re currently facing. To fix this, just drink a big pack of chilled orange juice.

    Sachet Chelsea

Do you see how active and gingered bus conductors are every morning? It’s because they’ve taken that hot London dry gin that makes your chest feel like it’s on fire. Squeeze a sachet into your mouth and turbocharge yourr productivity. But the catch is you have to hurry up and finish your work because, after an hour or two, you’ll fall asleep.

Disclaimer: Alcoholism isn’t a joke. Please drink responsibly. And don’t drink while driving or operating machinery.

  • Ice Lolly and 4 Drinks That Made Our Sunday Afternoons

Before we all became alcoholics and life was a lot simpler, there were drinks that held us down on Sunday afternoons. Especially to douse the tension from the hot sun after that power-packed sermon and deliverance session by visiting Pastor Japhet Elijah (Power Must Change Hands).

    Sample some of them:

    1. Ice Lolly

Crunching blocked ice lolly with your teeth was an assignment. Can’t tell me nothing.

    2. Zobo

Above is zobo that went to Harvard and did a post doctoral at MIT. Real zobo doesn’t sit in a glass cup. I lie?

    3. Kunu

Kunu is a real g. End of.

    4. Fan Yogo

Says a lot about the staying power of Fan Yogo if Micheal Essien was in on it. If you didn’t drink FanYogo as a kid or on Sunday afternoons, you’re a refugee from Chad. Can’t tell me nothing.

    5. Soya Milk

Soy Milk is good milk. Certainly more nutritious than Jack Sparrow, John Snow and all the other creepy ‘Bitters’ we have out there.

  • 8 Things You Don’t Know You Deserve This Week

Like the millions of people across the world who work 9 to 5s, I hate Mondays. Always have, always will. At least until I’m a billionaire and don’t have to wake up at 8 am and slug it out with the masses.

Because I’m a firm believer in living my very best life, I’m always coming up with imaginative ways to make Mondays, well a little less suckish. Like calling in sick every other Monday or getting half of my deliverables done the night before if I’m sober enough and home before 8 pm. My new favourite thing, however, is working with a reward system. I set a list of goals I want to accomplish during the week and by the weekend I reward myself with something from my ‘treat yo self’ list. If I don’t meet my target I still console myself with something of my list. It’s always a win-win situation.

Here’s a couple of things off my ‘treat yo self’ list that I think you deserve to indulge in this week. Because you are doing amazing sweetie and you deserve to spoil yourself too; rent and electricity bills be damned.

    The best Margherita in town

I think I’ve made enough noise about them for anyone who knows anything about me to know that Pizza-Riah is my favourite pizza place in Lagos. But since I tried the Margherita at Lagoon restaurant I’ve been torn. A friend put me on to it a couple of weeks ago. And it took me two bites to decide that he was right, they make these best Margherita in Lagos. I went back this weekend for it and also tried their ‘Lagoon Special’. I didn’t love the ‘Lagoon Special’ so pizzeria continues to hold its place in my heart. However, Lagoon does, without doubt, make the best Margherita in Lagos.

Fruit cake the best cake, especially from Cakes and Cream

I’ve been living two minutes away from a Cakes and Cream outlet for almost two years and I only discovered they make the best fruit cake in Lagos a couple of months ago. They’ve been the number one culprit for my rapidly expanding waistline, but every bite is worth it. They also make a pretty decent cheesecake. Talking about cheesecakes, I have to give Pizza-Riah an honorary mention here because they make a more than decent one. At this point, I should make a proud mum type of bumper sticker with their name on it.

    A 300 naira burger

I don’t think it’s possible for me to hate anything that comes out of Tastee Fried Chicken (TFC). Including their Buristo which shouldn’t be mistaken for an actual Burrito. I’m just now realising that what I thought was a typo in their menu might just be intentional, to let you know you aren’t getting an actual Burrito. Anyway, I’m here to talk about their burger which is the best burger you could get anywhere in the country for 300 naira. It’s made up of a small patty, a fresh bun some tomato and lettuce but for some reason, it bangs as hard as anything Burna Boy puts out.

    Breakfast smoothies

You deserve all the finer things of life, including breakfast smoothies, because your summer body needs some assistance to finish loading. Three weeks ago I switched out my regular breakfast for fruit smoothies and although I’m hungry all the time before lunch, I can say it’s definitely worth it and you should try it too. I’m trying to do this for a month and I’m about three weeks in, so I’ll share a little progress report by next week.

    Pizza from The House Cafe

I like food way too much to ever have a favourite kind. Do you know how many options there are in this world? But pizzas are definitely some of my most favourite food. The pizza from House Cafe hits all of the right spots. Perfect crust, the right amount of tomato sauce, cheesy enough to make my lactose intolerant self almost regret having it when I’m stuck in the toilet for hours the next day. Giving that I live and work in Surulere and House Cafe is all the way in Lekki, I think it says a lot about the pizza there that I’m ready to journey all the way to get it.

    A pedicure from Nail Boutique

I got a pedicure from Nail Boutique months ago and I have been to a bunch of other places since then because they are located all the way in Lekki. And each time I get a pedicure in a new place I regret not just making the trip down to get it done there. I don’t know what sort of sorcery they worked on me. But my heels were baby soft for weeks after I got it and my feet looked like they had somehow managed to take a layer off my sunburn. 10 over 10, will recommend.

    Urban Fuxion ribs

I knew that Urban Fuxion had me in their clutches when I was on my way home at 3 am from 355 and turned back on Akin Adesola to chase down their food truck because I wanted their ribs. It’s a little disappointing they no longer make their curly fries but they’ll also have a place in my stomach and that’s saying a lot.

My signature pottage recipe no matter what the haters say

In last week’s episode of #VRSUS which was nothing but a smear campaign against my fine name and elite culinary skills @boyin_ and @yesmina_t tried to trash my signature pottage recipe. I’m here to do damage control and declare that my recipe is elite and definitely one of the best things you deserve this week. Unfortunately I’m a sore loser and I’m still licking my wounds so I won’t be whipping up a pot anytime soon. But you can watch the full video here

What you most definitely don’t deserve though is this milkshake (?) from The Metaphor.

I didn’t think this needed to be said but here’s what a milkshake is made up of – actual strawberries, even if it’s just one; ice cream but I’d have even settled for yoghurt; sugar; and milk. It’s not however made up of 90% strawberry syrup and 10% ice. The waitresses retort of ‘That’s just how we make it here’ to my complaint is also one of the reasons I haven’t been back to Metaphor since.

  • Creativity doesn’t just happen on your computer or piece of paper. At least, not in Nigeria. Creativity here goes beyond that.

We are very similar to super heroes.

We love food and drinks, and we have figured out creative ways to experiment and make new stuff, especially with our drinks.

And guess what, they’ve banged! At least.. most.

Here are some locally made drinks that will switch up your taste buds once you try them.

Nigerian or not, you just have to respect these drinks.

Let’s start with the common ones, like Kunu.

It is made mostly in the North.

I would like you to know that a lot of Non-Nigeria have called this drink “The Nigerian Irish Cream”. Kunu is made with groundnuts and some rice, or tiger nuts. It is rich in Protein, Minerals and Fibre.

Let me just say it again, ‘The Nigerian Irish cream’. We. have. our. own. Irish. cream.

Palmwine. This drink is the daddy of all local drinks. It could be alcoholic or non-alchoholic.

So everyone and anyone can enjoy a little palm wine.

It is consumed in every part of Nigeria and is gotten from palm trees.

“No, we thought it was gotten from apple trees.” Sorry, I was just informing you guys now.

Anyway, if you’ve ever had pap (aka Ogi) before. Then you need to try Adoyo. This drink is deceitful because it looks like pineapple juice from afar.

But It is nothing close to fruit juice. Be warned.

Even though it is made from pineapple, it is also made from Ogi, which is made from corn.

Just look at it. If you haven’t tired it, well, now you have a reason to.

Another incredible drink is Omi Wara. It is drank majorly by the Northerners and is made from cheese and water. Some people will disagree with the fact that it’s an incredible drink.

    But, one man’s meat..

Let’s talk about Nigerian Vodka for a second, aka Ogogoro. If you’ve ever heard the names; sapele water, push me I push you, I for don marry, kai kai, etc, they are all from the same family, and their surname is Ogogoro. It is made from ripe plantain.

This drink is NOT for children.

Another alcoholic drink is Burukutu. The production of this drink takes a rather long process because it has to ferment properly, for at least 48hours.

But it’s worth the wait, just not for people not old enough to drink alcohol obviously.

Finally we have something called Groundnut Milk Drink. It is is made from groundnut of course, and is very rich in protein. It’s basically groundnut and water.

It is that drink you’d want to have when the weather is cool.

There are a lot more drinks but let’s take baby steps and try these 8 first.

    Right? No rush.
  • West African countries have quite a lot in common when it comes to food and drink. Just see how many countries are claiming ownership of Jollof rice.

But there is also a lot of diversity we can’t help but appreciate. You probably already know what to eat when you travel across West Africa, but have you ever wondered what to drink? Check this out!

    La Beninoise – Benin Republic

This is the official national drink, and definitely the cheapest beer to buy in Benin.

    Zoom Koom – Burkina Faso

The traditional drink of Burkina Faso, zoom koom is a flour-based drink. It sounds a little weird, but it’s so delicious!

    Grogue – Cape Verde

Cape Verde’s national drink is grogue – a rum distilled from sugar cane that has an alcohol percentage of over 40%! Honestly, the country sounds lit.

    Bangui – Ivory Coast

Bangui is the national drink of Ivory Coast, and it is the local palm wine. It looks milky and is both bitter/sour and sweet.

    Attaya – Gambia, Senegal

Attaya is a green tea and a way of Gambian and Senegalese life. It is served extremely hot, strong and sweet.

    Asaana – Ghana

Asaana is a delicious Ghanaian drink made from fermented corn and caramelized sugar. It is absolutely refreshing and it tastes great.

    Ginger Juice – Guinea

This is a Guinean drink that is everything you need it to be. It is the most delicious balance between spicy and sweet. Ask for it when next you’re in the region.

Lemongrass Tea – Liberia, Sierra Leone

This drink tastes as good as it smells… maybe better lol. This drink is a favourite in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

    Sweet Tea – Mali, Mauritania

Mali and Mauritania have a sweet green tea culture. It is served three times from the same pot; the first is bitter as death, the second is slightly sweetened like life, and the third being as sweet as love, as is popularly said.

    Biere Niger – Niger

Although alcohol is restricted in Niger, its national drink is Biere Niger, and it is actually quite good.

    Ogogoro – Nigeria

This is a very potent alcoholic drink that is distilled from fermented Raphia palm tree juice. Advance with caution.

    Saint Helena – Tungi Spirit

Tungi is an alcoholic drink distilled from the cactus pear fruit. It is very strong, so make sure you’re careful with this.

Sao Tome and Principe – Palm Wine

This is a delicious sour/sweet alcoholic drink made from the sap of certain palm trees. You can pretty much find this across West Africa.

    Sodabi – Togo

And finally, we have Sodabi. This is a liquor made by distilling palm wine. It’s an award-winning drink, so you can guarantee that it’s good!
