The first weekend in February 2016 witnessed the maiden edition of the Lagos city marathon and in turn the first of its kind in Nigeria.

Athletes from around Africa came down to Lagos to take part in the event that boasted of cash prizes worth 92 million Naira.

To ensure success of the marathon, the Lagos state government closed the roads that were to be covered by the runners.

And as usual, the flow of traffic was on lock down.

The runners were of diverse ages…

This 68 year old Nigerian woman took part and also completed the race just because she wanted to exercise and have some fun while at it.

.. And no one was left out.

Some runners got hosed down by this kind plant seller.

It was lit for some..

And not so fun for others.

And some basically have their worst Saturday yet because of the traffic.

The first Nigerian to complete the race Philip Sharabutu finished 7th taking home 1 million cash prize.

As expected, the Kenyan and Ethiopian kings of marathon finished the race before anybody else with Abraham Kiptom taking the lead and winning $50,000.

And because Nigerians generally hate not being the center of attention, serious banter went down on Nigerian Twitter.

The next Lagos marathon will take place in February 2017 and we hope Nigerian athletes will step up their game by then.
