An Open Relationship on a ₦73k Monthly Income

Kabir has always enjoyed a comfortable life and wants to maintain that. Between his love for gifting his partner and a ₦73k income, how will he avoid what he fears most — being poor?

An excerpt: “We have conversation about money all the time. He’s more financially literate, so he knows all about the stocks and bonds market. While I save my regular ₦10 – 15k, he has stocks with a telecommunication company in Nigeria and some his dad left him when he passed. He mentioned in July 2022 that he wanted to get me stocks, but due to the fall in the stock market, he hasn’t gotten around to it. “

Peace started saving in her little pink purse when she was 10. At 23, she’s working two jobs, saving over half her salary and making japa plans. Where does her long-distance boyfriend stand in all these?

An excerpt: “In September 2022, my boyfriend asked me to visit him in Ghana. I told him I couldn’t go until he asked my mum. My mum knew about him because she’d heard my sister and uncle joke about him. She also met him during my induction in September 2021, but you know Nigerian mothers. She said she read a WhatsApp BC where a man murdered his wife during a trip to Ghana. It took plenty of begging and convincing from my sister and uncle before she agreed. My boyfriend paid for the whole thing.”

    Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

Today’s subject line is also the title of an article the Zikoko team published last week. For some reason, I haven’t gotten it out of my mind. Wait, is this what “being triggered” feels like?

For the past few days, I’ve wondered what a perfect safety net looks like, and if I’ll ever hit whatever number I decide it is. I don’t have an answer to that question yet. If today’s Naira Life is anything to go by, I don’t imagine many people do either.

So, I guess we move? Cheers to that.

Now, let’s take a look at this week’s stories.

The #NairaLife of the Freelance Writer Who’s Seen Better Days

The 31-year-old subject in this #NairaLife tried a few things for money before realising freelance writing paid him more than his colleague’s bank jobs. He thought he’d reached his final bus stop, but that only lasted four years.
Now, he’s down on his luck, sending 10 job applications weekly, and hoping that a structured job will provide him an escape.

An excerpt: “We’ve decided to be lovers for the long haul, so we discuss long-term plans. We want to expand her business. I’ve suggested getting a physical location and diversifying what she sells. Her thrift business fluctuates, and I’d like her to be more stable. We’re currently making progress with that.

    Vol 39 | 30-08-2023

    Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

Random, but I have the same last name as a politician and former senator in my state. For a long time when I was growing up, this coincidence was something of a claim to fame. People were convinced that we were related and were disappointed when I told them they got it wrong. One time when I was in university, a porter was so sure I wasn’t telling the truth that he got me to call my dad to confirm what he thought he knew. To many people like him, I was just trying to keep a low profile.

At some point, I started telling people that this senator was a distant uncle — it was the fastest way to get them to leave me alone. But it also got me out of trouble in my uni a few times.

Naturally, I thought a lot about what it must be like to have a politician parent or close family member. And if this week’s Naira Life is anything to go by, it means not having to worry about your financial future. Let’s dive in!

    Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

Something new creeps into my budget and becomes a recurring expense every year. In 2023, it’s the cost of being a wedding guest. I’ve attended more weddings this year than the past three years combined. 90% of these events were also out of town, which meant I had to spend extra on the logistics.

I didn’t mind/think about how much of a financial commitment these were until recently. But I don’t imagine the wedding invites will stop anytime soon, so it seems I have to work out a plan that will “conveniently” accommodate them. Exciting, something new to figure out.

That’s enough about me, let’s look at this week’s stories.

    Plus: Some exciting announcement

    Vol 37 | 17-07-2023

    Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

My name is Tife, and I’m here because I briefly kidnapped Toheeb with an exciting announcement.

ICYMI, Toheeb hinted this in the newsletter last week, but here’s the gist: I’ll be taking over this series from him.

Today’s Naira Life is my first (insert screams), but before we get into it, I had a conversation with Toheeb where he talked about his best (and least favourite) thing about writing the series. We also talked about some of the interesting things we hope to continue doing with Naira Life.

Tife: What was it like writing Naira Life?

Toheeb: It was revealing. Most of the conversations and the stories added a new layer of perspective or gave me a totally different context to something I already knew.

Tife: What did you like most about writing the series?

Toheeb: I’ve loved Naira Life even before I started writing it. My favourite part of the process was the conversations that led to the stories. Least favourite? I’m genuinely not sure. Maybe just the fact that it usually took most of my weekend. But even that wasn’t a disaster.

Tife: What’s your best Naira Life story?

Toheeb: Haha. This is an incredibly difficult question. I have a few favourites for varying reasons. But the Naira Life that moved me the most was NL 137.

I also have a question for you, Tife. What are you looking forward to the most about owning Naira Life?

Tife: Meeting rich people and begging them to show me the way. JK JK. I’m looking forward to the conversations and bringing even more diverse stories. NairaLife is known for sharing the stories of people with very broad worldviews and distinct experiences, and I want to do more of that. From the female carpenter on the road, to the silent millionaires and everyone in between.

Cheers to new beginnings. Now, let’s get into this week’s stories.

#NairaLife: The Christian Missionary Trusting God With ₦49k/Month

The 34-year-old in this #NairaLife set out to escape a life of poverty in Mushin, Lagos. But a decision to follow God meant abandoning a ₦150k/month offer and a promising civil engineering career for ₦5k/month to volunteer at a Christian mission in 2015.
Now, he can hardly boast of a monthly income, but he’s sure of one thing: he’ll never be stranded.

Everything was approximately ₦70k. While for my birthday, he got me a cake, two customized shirts and tote bags for my brand.

    Vol 37 | 10-07-2023

    Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

I have a few financial hacks I keep talking about adopting that I never get around to. On top of this list is paying for device insurance. I believe the premium is a fair trade-off for the value you get if you eventually need it. So why haven’t I gone ahead and done it, eh?

It’s particularly worrying because I have a computer I’ve abandoned for a few months because of a damaged screen. Last week, I had a scare with my backup computer. You’d think that’d spur me to action, but nah. I’m still out here covering my devices with the “Blood of Jesus” and “Insha Allah”.

This isn’t foolproof, is it? Let’s hope I do the right thing before I have to find out.

By the way, we have important news to share next week. Stay tuned.

Now, let’s get into this week’s stories.

Family Life in Warri, Delta State, on a ₦51k Fixed Pension

After 30 years at the bank, Mr Patrick* retired in 2014 and moved into his house in Warri, Delta state. He shares what led to his early retirement, how his friend ghosted him after an investment deal and putting his children through school on an epileptic pension supply.

An excerpt: “I [currently] run a fabric business. When I started in 2016, business was good, but with how bad the economy has been, my business has suffered greatly. People are working hard just to make ends meet, so they’re not thinking of getting new fabric. Sometimes, I go a week without selling a thing. Still, I open shop Monday to Saturday just in case a customer comes. Some months, I could get orders to supply a friend for an event, and the profit would be about ₦50k – ₦70k. Part of the money goes back to the business and shop rent at the end of the year.

    Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

    June (almost) wrecked me.

For about three years now, my biggest bills have been due in June. I’m still not sure how this happened.

On one hand, I’m a bit relieved that it’s all done and over with. But the countdown to June 2024 has also started. Ugh.

I’ll be sulking for the whole of July while manifesting for money I didn’t work for. Wish me luck.

When Titilayo* met Edwin* in 2015, she was fresh out of NYSC and splurging her salary on clothes. But since they married in 2019, she’s become obsessed with saving. In this article, she tells Zikoko how she’s surviving on only ₦300k out of her ₦1.3m monthly salary while earning more than her partner.

An excerpt: “Because Edwin (my husband) earns ₦880k, the pay gap is pretty obvious. Whenever I complain about him not chipping in with the feeding, he reminds me that he pays for most of the recurring expenses. He also gets upset when he thinks I’m splurging because I don’t have to pay bills. Sometimes, I wish we could switch to when he earned more.

    Good morning, {$name}.🌞

Last year, I bought a Meta Quest 2 VR headset. It wasn’t a need, but I thought it might be fun to explore the immersive world of virtual reality. And man, oh man, what a piece of technology it is. If I’m not fighting hordes of zombies on The Walking Dead, I’m watching video content in ways I didn’t imagine were possible.

My headset was my shiny, new toy until recently.

A few weeks ago, Apple announced the soon-to-be-released Vision Pro. My initial, impulsive thought was, “What’s better than one VR headset? Two.” Then I saw the price. At $3500, I’ll have to shell out more than 12x what it cost me to buy a Meta Quest 2.

I guess one VR headset is enough after all. But I’m curious, how much do you consider a fair price for Apple’s new device? Hold that thought until you get to #HowMuchLast a few sections below.

First, let’s get into this week’s stories.

An excerpt: “My girlfriend is the most thoughtful person I know. My birthday was just a few days after we started dating and she went all out. Got me gifts— a jersey, perfumes, a belt and a fancy cup I even took to Nairobi. As a guy, I’m not used to getting a lot of gifts, so the intentionality behind these meant everything to me. Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

We all have a degree of anxiety about money, and it’s always interesting to see how it guides our financial decisions. The subject of today’s Naira Life earns reasonably well, but saving money is not his thing. A lot of it has to do with his previous experiences with money, or the lack of it — and what it meant for his family.

    Good morning, 🌞

In November 2020, we published this Naira Life about an oil and gas engine that shook the internet. As the conversation it sparked raged online, the Zikoko team also discussed it during our Monday editorial meeting. While the team half-jokingly, half-seriously, debated if we’d made the right career choices, one of my co-workers at the time, Hassan, said: “There’s a time to be broke and a time to be rich.”

It was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but I held on to it and often revisit the meaning behind those words. Writing this week’s Naira Life was another reminder that this sentiment holds some truth.

You see the guy in this story? He made his bets at the right time and embraced everything that came with it, even though it didn’t translate into immediate wealth. But boy, did it set him on the proper path.

I don’t know how I feel about today being the last public holiday for some time. But we had a good run, didn’t we?

Today’s #NairaLife reminds me of the lyrics to Burna Boy’s “Common Person.” The only difference is that although the subject has had a long and relatively difficult life, I don’t think she has found her happiness yet.

And it’s mostly because of one person — her husband who, for some reason, is dedicated to being her biggest opp.

How My Media Experience Prepared Me for a Tech Product Marketing Role

Daniel Orubo worked in the media for over six years before deciding to transfer his skills to a tech role. He stuck to the process and completed his transition into the tech industry in 2021. Now he’s a product marketer at Piggyvest.

But how did he do it?

An excerpt: “When I decided to transition into tech, I quit my job, although I didn’t have another one lined up — a career first. Then I tweeted that I was looking for a marketing role in tech. I didn’t know what I thought the tweet was going to accomplish, but some cool founders reached out to me. I’m still amazed by the quality of people who wanted to work with me.”

An excerpt: “We’re very open about our finances, and this makes it easier for our relationship because we know what each person can do, and we’ve learned to be content with what we get. We have simple dates where we buy shawarma and ice cream or food from Chicken Republic when we can’t go to a restaurant. The expensive dates are for when we go out with friends, and he usually offers to pay. I think the bill for our birthday last year was about ₦40k. He didn’t show me.”

    Good morning, 🌞

I’m a big fan of today’s Naira Life for a few reasons. But the biggest is probably how the subject has done multiple things over the year and ensured she was good at them. Ultimately, the different pivots and her dedication to the processes got her a big break.

According to her, she couldn’t afford not to be a hard worker. Let’s find out why, shall we?

Married Life in the UK on an £800 Monthly Sales Rep Income

After four years of dating between Abuja and Lagos, Susan and David refused to deal with an even longer distance, so they married and moved to the UK. But how are they finding their feet in a new country while navigating the early stages of their marriage?

An excerpt: “It’s beginning to feel like we’re a married couple. I have my own pots and a kitchen! Even after the court wedding and introduction, it still felt like we were dating because we spent limited time together, but now it’s different. Nothing has changed in how we treat each other, but we’re settling into this new life together.

In Nigeria, family and social lending are an integral part of the economy and play a crucial role in supporting individuals and households in meeting their financial needs.

In a country where access to formal financial institutions is limited, these transactions serve as an alternative means of obtaining financial support. While there may be some risks associated with this phenomenon , family lending offers unique benefits that should be recognized and harnessed for the benefit of all.

On Friday, April 28th, at 5 PM(WAT) we will bring together key players and experts in the fintech industry including Tunji Andrews – CEO, Awabah and Tunde Akin-Moses – CEO, Sycamore to discuss the various ways to tackle the challenges of informal household financial transactions.

    Good morning, 🌞

I like stories like this week’s Naira Life. It’s one where you’re going on one path or exploring multiple options, and out of nowhere, an opportunity comes and changes everything. For the lady in this story, one thing drove the chain of events of everything that’s happened in the past six years; her voice.

    Let’s get into it.

Before 2017, the 22-year-old in this story was just a university student who’d tried a few businesses. A radio internship and job recommendation unlocked a potential long-term stream of income for her. The key to this? Her voice.

Seven years of throwing things at the wall later, this is what her finances look like.

How to Actually Make Money on YouTube, According to Eric Okafor

Last week, we shared how Fisayo Fosudo has built a visual storytelling brand on Youtube over the past seven years. Today, we’re showing you how you can secure your own YouTube bag and will be drawing lessons from another Youtuber — Eric Okafor.

An Enugu to Canada Long-Distance Marriage on a ₦210k Monthly Income

Dinma* (27) met her husband Nnamdi* (34) for the first time a few days before their court wedding in 2021. In this article, she tells us about Nnamdi asking her to marry him four months after they started talking, planning their wedding together online and how they manage the distance and time difference in their marriage now.

An excerpt: “We have conversations about money. We even agreed to open a joint account that he’d be funding mostly till I got a better-paying job, but we didn’t have time to go to the bank the last time he was around.
He knows I earn a decent salary, and can comfortably take care of my feeding, electricity and fuel bills, he assists with the heavy bills like rent and car maintenance. So whenever he doesn’t have money or has other financial commitments, he tells me, so I can prepare to cut costs for that period.

    How does their relationship work?

    illustration box 3

A survey data by EFInA in 2020 on financial inclusion shows that 1 in 3 Nigerian adults are financially excluded – with no access to formal financial services such as payment, savings, and credit. This means that individuals and business owners who are financially underrepresented usually rely on family, friends, or coworkers for financial support and are bound by the principal amount.

Financial institutions, banks, and fintech have developed different products and services to capture this market segment, yet gaps abound.

Join us on Friday, April 14th at 5 PM (WAT) as we will be discussing the challenges, and inefficiencies associated with lending among family and friends.

When people talk about the gig economy, it’s mostly about how flexible and freeing it is. You know, you choose your schedule and decide when to work. This is true. This subject has, but it wasn’t a disaster.

    Vol 22 | 20-03-2023

    Good morning. 🌞

We often think about the job that will change the trajectory of our lives and finances. It’s almost impossible not to.
But what happens when you finally find the “perfect job”, and it ends up being a false start? What if you start a seemingly life-changing job and get laid off in your first week?

If you ask today’s Naira Life subject these questions, her answer will go something like, “been there, done that.”

She’ll probably also tell you how her income grew slowly for years before it took a giant leap.

    Let’s get into it.

In 2021, this #NairaLife subject was laid off in her first week at a “life-changing job” at a tech company. While her savings provided some comfort, her next job offer tilted the scales back in her favour. Her next stop? A UK master’s degree to improve her earning potential.

For 28-year-old Obi and his wife, their relationship was built on spending quality time together and eating their fave foods. But with his move to Germany right after their wedding, how do they manage the distance?

An excerpt: “We buy things for each other sometimes, but we usually send money. For instance, for Christmas 2021, I got her shoes, sneakers, a leather bag and necklace. For her birthday the following year, I sent her $1k. Other times, I give her my card to pay for stuff, or send her the occasional ₦100k – ₦200k when she wants something. ”

For this tricycle operator, it might.

    Vol 21 | 13-03-2023

    Good morning, {$name}. 🌞

The running theme in today’s Naira Life is the hidden costs that make dreams come true. For seven years, this subject’s ultimate goal was returning to school. Now that it’s happening, he can only hope it sets him on a path to financial freedom.

But his motivations also run deeper. This didn’t make the final draft of the story, but when I asked him why he was so intentional about getting higher education, he said:

“My mum didn’t go to school because her father decided to focus only on her brothers. One of her brothers became a medical doctor, and another a banker. Until her death, my mum believed she would have done better in life if she had the same opportunities her brother did.”

This week’s #HowMuchLast game could alternatively be called “How much is a good night’s sleep worth.” I’m very curious to see your answers.

The 29-year-old in this #NairaLife is a tricycle operator and typically earns between ₦4k to ₦10k per day. But not for much longer. Between 2012 and 2019, he nursed a dream of getting higher education. Now he’s making it happen and hoping it’ll unlock his next level of income.

An excerpt: “I had an unhealthy relationship with money growing up. I didn’t understand money early as I was raised to be terrified of it. If you give me ₦5m today, I would freak out and overthink and micromanage every single expense. But not my man. He’s more comfortable with money. He’s the one who taught me to spend — especially on things I used to consider ridiculous like ₦50k on a single restaurant outing. He’s helped me ease the burden of guilt and taught me that above everything, money is a tool.”

What would your #NairaLife look like if you did?

    Vol 19 | 27-02-2023

    Good morning. 🌞

I’m fascinated by civil servants, and I like talking to as many as I can find. My mum has been working for the government for about two decades, and it was from her I first learned that what civil servants don’t get in rapid income growth, they get in job security and credit and financing structures.

This is also true for the 36-year-old civil servant in today’s NairaLife. For the better part of the last 13 years, she’s had to constantly punch above her financial weight in pursuit of her basic and grand goals. Ultimately, what made the difference was largely connected to her career in the civil service.

Without further ado, let’s dive into this week’s stories.

MoneyByZikoko: How do you get out of tricky financial situations?
For this fashion designer, it’s the people that come through for her.

    Vol 18 | 20-02-2023

    Good morning, 🌞

Can you guess how much cash I’m currently holding? ₦100.

I’m not going to lie; the note is a prized possession at this point. I randomly catch myself reaching for my wallet to confirm it’s still in there. I’d never thought this day would come, but here we are.

It’d be hilarious if it wasn’t a chaotic situation.

Speaking of chaotic situations, the fashion designer in today’s #NairaLife is no stranger to those. In the past 10 years, she’s had to deal with a few financial struggles. Some were out of her control, and others were a consequence of her decisions. But somehow, she always finds a way out of them.

On #LoveCurrency, the theme is “love will always come through”. To mark this year’s Valentine’s Day, six people share details of their relationships and how much it costs them to celebrate special occasions with their partners.

    In this letter:

#NairaLife: How Does This Fashion Designer End Up in Tough Financial Situations?

This 25-year-old fashion designer has had a fair share of tricky financial circumstances. But the consistent pattern in her story is how she always finds random people to get her out of them.

This is what her #NairaLife looks like

For this POS agent, no cash means no income.

    Vol 17 | 13-02-2023

    Good morning. 🌞

If you live in Nigeria, you know POS agents are currently the most sought-after group after fuel attendants. With the new naira notes scarcity and crazy-high charges for cash withdrawal
by POS agents, it’s easy to imagine these guys are swimming in money.

We got a POS agent for today’s #NairaLife. While he confirms he makes more money now, he admits the cashless policy threatens his business and wants to start other businesses ASAP.

In the spirit of looking for better opportunities, this #LoveCurrency subject urgently needs something better to supplement his ₦40k teacher salary. But how does he manage — with a
serious relationship, no less — now?

The #NairaLife of a POS Agent Forced to Plot New Business Moves

The 27-year-old in this #NairaLife worked security jobs for nine years before saving up to launch his POS business. But now, he might need to find something else because the current cash scarcity is a sign of things to come.

Can he give us his POS machine when he starts the other businesses, though? 👀

Dating on a ₦40k Monthly Teacher Salary in Port Harcourt

After losing a marketing job in Lagos, 30-year-old Chidi moved to Port Harcourt. Five years later, he’s managing a ₦40k teaching job, zero savings, ₦300k debt and a supportive girlfriend who believes his hard work will pay off someday.

An excerpt: “In December, the government announced that those loan sharks were illegal, so I’m not paying. I used to be scared of their threats, but now, I’m a comrade. I’ve cancelled borrowing sha. I’m trying to leave this school and look for a better-paying job. If I can find a school that’ll pay ₦150k, that’d be great.”

    Good morning! 🌞

Today’s #NairaLife subject reminds me of myself, minus the $150k in savings, of course. It’s great to save for the future, but what happens when you don’t have enough money to live the life you want now? Come back and answer when you’ve read the story.

On Love Currency, our subject may not have $150k, but she’s been saving since she was 10. Now, she’s saving more than half her salary and planning her relocation to the UK — which may or not be because of her boyfriend.

Enough savings talk. What’s the craziest career pivot you’ve seen? For our first Hustleprint story, we got Jemima Osunde to tell us how she makes the most out of Physiotherapy and Nollywood.

    ₦48,809,521,349.60
That’s what £88 million looks like in naira, and it’s what Chelsea paid to Shakhtar Donetsk for Mykhailo Mudryk’s controversial signing. Controversial because Arsenal also had eyes for the winger, but as they say, money answereth all things.

    ₦30,000,000
That’s the amount of new naira notes the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Bauchi claims to allocate daily to all banks in the state. Does anyone know how much is allocated daily to other states? Because the long queues for cash don’t seem to be letting up.
    Four days to go
CBN’s deadline extension for depositing old naira notes ends on February 10th 2023. Do you think it’ll also mean an end to the current new-naira-notes scarcity?

She’s Saving For Her Future, and She’s at $150k

The 28-year-old lawyer on this #NairaLife has over $150k in savings but put her financial happiness at 5/10. Why? Because the money is for her future, and she needs money for now.

    Honestly, I see her point.

    Vol 14 | 23-01-2023

    Brought to you by

    Good morning! 🌞

It’s finally salary week, and I’m so excited I could cry. Some of us just want to know what it feels like for money to enter our accounts again.

For others, salary week means freedom from the many loans taken to survive January’s 774 days.

I’m not sure what kind of salary would save today’s #NairaLife subject. He’s currently ₦2m in debt. He didn’t exactly set out to be in so much debt, though.

Just like how this #LoveCurrency subject didn’t set out to be the poor partner with a trying-to-survive career in the relationship. Love happened, and even though his 15-year-older partner can afford to spend his entire salary in one night, he tries to balance the dynamic through the power of thoughtful gifting.

Wouldn’t life be so much easier if we could all manifest as much money as we need?

    In this letter:

#NairaLife: He’s 23 and on His Sixth Business in Three Years

The 23-year-old student on this week’s Naira Life started his first business in 2020. Since then, he’s tried and failed at five businesses. He doesn’t know what it is, but something keeps pushing him to try again, even though he’s now in ₦2m debt.

    It’s the persistence for me.

    It’s a new week!

I can’t hold my excitement as we enter into January’s 17th week. First, because we’re finally getting into the year, but secondly, and more importantly, because salary week is coming!

But if you see me outside, squeeze $1m into my hand.

The two stories we’re bringing your way today aren’t so similar, but they’re both captivating. For Naira Life, a gifted child was made to study architecture but decided to become an editor instead. She thinks she made the right choice.

Married Life in Lagos on a ₦1.3m Monthly Accountant Salary

When Titilayo* met Edwin* in 2015, she was fresh out of NYSC and splurging her salary on clothes. But since they married in 2019, she’s become obsessed with saving. In this article, she tells Zikoko how she’s surviving on only ₦300k out of her ₦1.3m monthly salary while earning more than her partner.

An excerpt: Because Edwin earns ₦880k, the pay gap is pretty obvious. Whenever I complain about him not chipping in with the feeding, he reminds me that he pays for most of the recurring expenses. He also gets upset when he thinks I’m splurging because I don’t have to pay bills. Sometimes, I wish we could switch to when he earned more.

₦875=$1 That was the highest black market exchange rate for the dollar last year — in November. As a nation, we had to fall to our knees and beg our currency to fight back. We’re currently at around ₦736=$1. What’s the lowest/highest we’ll do this year?
Red, green and blue Those are the new colours of our recently redesigned ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1000 notes, respectively. We’ll see them in full use this year. One thing we’re certain of — Nigerians do not like the new notes. We also had some kind thoughts on the redesign.
₦20k Effective January 9th 2023, that’s the most money you can withdraw from an ATM or POS in a day. In a week, it’s ₦100k. If you want to withdraw more than ₦100k in a week, you have to do it over the counter. And you’ll pay a 5% processing fee. That’s only a small part of Meffy’s new cash policy. We broke it down here.

The #NairaLife of the Software Dev That Only Thinks in Dollars

After five years in university and over $100k in fees, today’s subject on #NairaLife decided in his final year that he didn’t want to work in architecture again. Clearly, his parents weren’t happy. But maybe their minds are changed now that he’s making tech money.

An excerpt: “I didn’t want to look back at 30 and regret not going into tech. In my head, it was: worst case scenario, I end up with a really high-paying job; best case, I create a product that makes me a billionaire. Win-win”

#LoveCurrency: Dating in Abuja on a ₦700k Influencer Monthly Income

After COVID, Julia* quit her insurance job to focus on being a food blogger. In this article, she tells us how her boyfriend influenced her decision, going from earning ₦30k to ₦700k monthly and her plan to be financially independent.

When asked about their plans as a couple, she says: “I don’t know as a couple — I feel like anybody can still serve you breakfast, so I’m trying to focus on my own plans.

#MoneyByZikoko: Who Should You Fight If You Don’t Get Your Pension?

    Vol 9 | 19-12-2022

    Brought to you by

    Good morning, {$name}!

I don’t know about you, but the holiday has started on this side, and I’m writing this to you excited about watching Netflix the entire day.

Don’t get me wrong, I would like to go outside and socialise, but the price of fuel has doubled, and I strongly believe that there’s a way I can arrange my house to make it look like a bar. So maybe I’ll do that.

This week we have a recap of the most-read stories of 2022 and a fantastic Love Currency story from an older couple doing business and relying on pension payments that only show up sometimes.

    In this letter:

    • #NairaLife: Most-Read stories of 2022
    • #LoveCurrency: Family Life in Warri, Delta State, on a ₦51k Fixed Pension
    • Money Meanings: “YOLO”
    • Where The Money At?!

    We’ll call it #NairaLifeWrapped!

It’s been a long year of exciting Naira Life stories. There was one story that dropped on salary day. You could hear us collectively hissing at our salaries that day.

So we decided to compile all the stories you loved this year and give you a chance to reread them and, of course, share them with people who may have missed them.

Family Life in Warri, Delta State, on a ₦51k Fixed Pension

One thing I always wonder about is how old people navigate life when they’ve been told to legally retire. I used to think that their pension payments were a given (if it wasn’t coming directly from the government). I was wrong.

In this edition of Love Currency, we speak to a 63-year-old man about his relationship with money and how he and his wife cater for themselves.

When he is asked about his ‘financial future’, he says: “Future? At 63 it’s hard to have plans for the future.

  • #MoneyByZikoko: “What’s the true cost of a long-distance relationship?”

    #MoneyByZikoko: “What’s the true cost of a long-distance relationship?”

    Vol 7 | 05-12-2022

    Brought to you by

    Christmas is almost here.

I know you’re wondering why I’m rushing you, but honestly, there’s no better time than now to get into the Christmas spirit of giving and, of course, receiving.

Today’s Love Currency had me thinking about the true cost of a long-distance relationship. Apart from all the money that will be spent to make the distance not so long, there’s also the part where it’s emotionally draining.

If you’ve ever been in one of these, I’d like to know what some hidden costs you didn’t expect were.

Without any more ado. Let’s get into today’s edition.

    In this letter:

    • The #NairaLife of a Housekeeper Tired of Suffering
    • The Love Currency: Long Distance, $4k/m between London and Lagos
    • Money Meanings: “Capital”
    • Game: #HowMuchLast
    • Where The Money At?!

The #NairaLife of a Housekeeper Tired of Suffering

Today’s subject on #NairaLife finished secondary school in 1997 and couldn’t get into university. After that, she moved from Ibadan to Lagos to get a chance at a better life.

From housekeeping to tailoring, she worked several jobs, and now at 45, she’s still hoping the good things of life locate her.

    Read her story

The Love Currency: Long Distance between London & Lagos on $4k per month

I love that our subjects for this story have a deep understanding of what they both want out of life and are making serious moves to get there.

But you see that distance? That’s what I have an issue with because long distance is the actual ghetto.

An excerpt: “Earlier in the year [2022], I told her I’d always prioritise helping her reach a point where she can afford to get herself whatever she wanted instead of buying it for her. For instance, I can’t buy a wig of ₦1m, but when she needed about ₦1.4m to go to culinary school in October 2021, I assisted with ₦800k — ₦500k first, then ₦300k.

#MoneyByZikoko: “Have You Ever Had to Beg for Money?”

    Vol 6 | 28-11-2022

    Brought to you by

    I had an amazing weekend!

I was at Z! Fest. How was your weekend?

I like that we start Mondays with Naira Life. The stories give me the ginger to start the week with the right energy; today is no different. I mean, look at the story: she fractures her knee while pregnant, but doesn’t have enough to fix the knee or have her baby, so she has to beg.

After that, she swore she was done with being broke.

If it was you, wouldn’t you feel the same way?

    In this letter:

    • #NairaLife: She Had to Beg for Money. She Never Wants to Do That Again

#NairaLife: She Had to Beg for Money. She Never Wants to Do That Again

Today’s subject on #NairaLife is motivated to make money for one reason: to be as far away from 2016 as possible.

In 2016, she and her husband had to pick between borrowing to save her unborn child and her fractured knee because they couldn’t afford both.

Today, they have over $300k in savings.

    How did they do it?

Openness in relationships is sweet to see. Take this couple for instance. They met just last year and today, they know how much is in the other person’s bank account at every time.

Would you do that in your relationship?

An excerpt: “She made sure I understood and accepted that she had nothing to bring to the relationship in terms of financial support. But she was also very clear that she had her father and siblings, so I shouldn’t think of her as my dependant.

#MoneyByZikoko: “Who Do You Spend Most of Your Money On?”

    Vol 5 | 21-11-2022

    Brought to you by

    Happy Monday, {$name} 🙃

So apart from yourself, who do you spend most of your money on?

    Nobody? You need to change.

In two of our stories today, our subjects talk about happily spending money on their loved ones and having zero regrets because that’s what makes them happy.

After the subject on #NairaLife’s dad tried to kill himself because of debts in 2019, he swore he’d make money to take care of his family.

    And omo, he’s making money.

    In this letter:

The 23-year-old software quality assurance engineer on this week’s #NairaLife makes over $5k monthly. His salary was ₦50k at the beginning of the year.

Of all the reasons he’s happy about his new income, being able to take care of his family comes first.

He doesn’t consider giving his parents ₦250k monthly black tax, though. In fact, he wants to do more.

The Love Currency: A Long-distance relationship in Ibadan and Lagos on a ₦30k salary

My favourite part of this story is Feyi* playfully protesting that her boyfriend complains when she impulsively buys something for herself, but doesn’t when she gets him a spontaneous gift. Who no like better thing?

An excerpt: “I think the reason he doesn’t like me spending so much is because he doesn’t have plenty money himself. He’s still in university, and it’s me who normally sends him money.

    Good morning, {$name} 🌞

Do you have a side gig?

With how the economy has been moving, I think it may be better to ask how many side gigs you have.

In two of our stories today, we meet young Nigerians who talk about their money situations, and the concept of side gigs exists across both stories.

The subject of our #NairaLife today had a side gig paying more than her main gig.

But did she make the move you’re expecting? The answer may surprise you…

    In this letter:

    • The #NairaLife of a Lawyer Making More Money from Affiliate Marketing

#NairaLife: This Lawyer Was Earning More as an Affiliate Marketer

Before November 2020, the most money the 27-year-old on this week’s #NairaLife had made was ₦100k from a scholarship.

Then she found affiliate marketing and made ₦1.2m in a year. Today, she makes ₦160k as a lawyer but knows she’s going back to marketing.

My biggest question is… Why did she even continue working as a lawyer?

I like the way today’s Naira Life subject talks about his goals. He’s trying to get to a place where ₦20m is nothing to him.

So following his lead, today’s #HowMuchLast will be an expensive item, and I cannot wait to see how much you’d pay for it.

We have a fun edition today.

    In Money

    ₦20,510,000,000,000
Yes, that’s what 20 trillion naira looks like written out, and it’s Nigeria’s budget for 2023 as presented by our presido. Why are there so many zeroes and why is it called “Budget of Fiscal Consolidation and Transition”? We tried to look into it.

    ₦1000
That is now the naira equivalent of one pound sterling.
Technically, this didn’t happen last month, but it’s urgent enough for us to bend the rules.

    Wetin dey stop nonsense?
In the song “Stop Nonsense” Majeeed asks “Wetin dey stop nonsense?” and as we all know, the answer to that question is quite simple… Money.

It’s the last day of October and today’s letter is all about safety nets.

If you are anything like the subjects of the stories I’ll share today, then safety nets are not foreign to you.

I think life hits different when you know you can experience many things without worrying about ending up broke.
