Magazine covers are usually symbolic and often portray a theme that gives an idea of what main article is about.
However, several magazine spreads within and outside Nigeria have been more controversial than anything else. We can never forgive Wizkid for this ridiculousness.
Sitting down with Fame Extra magazine, popular OAP and slay queen, Toke Makinwa, talked about life after the scandalous separation from her estranged husband, Maye Ayida.
As deep and touching as the whole interview was, we need to talk about this highly ridiculous picture which features a well-dressed Toke, surrounded by dishevelled children in a ghetto.
Please, what does her separation have to do with these children?
Just look at the child clutching at her clothes, is she supposed to be some ‘ghetto saviour’ or what?
We need an explanation as to why she was looking all white and bright in the midst of these disheveled children sha. Share your thoughts on this in the comments section.
As a Nigerian, there’s the sadistic happiness that comes with knowing ours is not the only country where things simply don’t work. Our Nigerian brother was in London Heathrow Airport recently, and guess what he noticed while it rained? Leaks in the roof! And not just that; these guys used a bucket to gather rain water.
Even though it’s very petty of us, we are honestly just as happy as this guy.
For some reason I was quite happy to see a roof leaking at @HeathrowAirport and a bucket gathering the water. It's not only in Nigeria 😝
The 2016 edition of the Toronto Film Festival is gradually coming to an end but not without Nigerians being incredibly proud of our very own Nollywood.
For one, the Nigerian industry made its way to the City to City programme of the festival. Also, some Nigerian celebrities dished out an unbelievable dose of slayage that made us totally love-struck.
1. When Zainab Balogun, gave us just the right amount of slay.
2. Adesua Etomi’s fierce look in her stunning yellow dress.
3. Banky W just keeps it dapper all the time!
4. Mummy Genevieve being her usual fashionably classy self.
5. That time Somkele Idhlama, served legs in this pretty black dress.
6. When RMD showed us he is the definition of fine wine.
7. Beverly Naya totally killed it with her red dress.
8. That time Zainab Balogun proved she was born to slay.
9. When Chidi Mokeme showed he is still a hottie.
10. Somkele Idhlama looked even better in this two piece set.
For the first time in the history of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), 8 Nollywood movies were showcased in the festival’s City to City programme.
This impressive feat not only proved that Nollywood is definitely on the way to greatness, also, international actors of African descent including Lupita N’yongo and David Oyelowo showed their support.
Speaking to an audience at the City to City: Lagos opening, an excited David Oyelowo was too happy to be in the midst of people who could properly pronounce his name without adding extra ‘phone’.
His speech was not only inspiring but the funniest we’ve seen in a while as he perfectly mimicked the typical Nigerian parent’s reaction to their child going into acting.
We hope to see a Nollywood on the Academy Award playing field soon, but in the meantime, you can watch David Oyelowo’s speech below:
The public holiday was not just a long ass weekend, but also a hive of really lit events which included the popular Socialympics.
Apparently, someone took this random picture of badass photographer, Anny Roberts, and the peng Brendalishus, but people with no chill on the internet have given it the most hilarious captions you can ever think of.
On any given day, you’ll find that University students discontinue their education for varying reasons. However, when a student voluntarily withdraws over something wrong he did in the past, it shows that the strangest things will never stop happening.
The management of University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) couldn’t be more shocked after receiving a letter sent by a student who voluntarily withdrew from the institution because he claimed he cheated during his WASSCE exams.
In the letter addressed to the Deputy Chancellor of Unilorin, the 300-level student of Sociology, Jephthah Abolarin, stated that he only passed his WASSCE through exam and he dud’t want to continur his education on a ‘shaky foundation’.
We know many of you did copy copy in school but we’re not saying anything sha! Can you drop out of school like Brother Jephthah did? Share your thoughts on this interesting gist in the comments section.
Recently, there was an APC election rally in Edo state, to garner support for the APC and its Edo State gubernatorial candidate, Godwin Obaseki.
While the rally was in full swing with several sitting governors and the President in attendance, we couldn’t help but notice the moves of two governors in particular.
Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you Governor Oshiomhole and Governor El-Rufai.
Apparently, The #ChangeBeginsWithMe Campaign is the latest thing our ogas at Aso Rock have come up with.
Speaking to the press, Nigeria’s Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji Lai Minister explained how the campaign aims at educating and enlightening Nigerians to appreciate values which are highly important in achieving national development.
According to the amebo we’re hearing, one guy in the campaign video said he will stop taking paraga.
The Nigerian Military has been in an ongoing counter terrorism exercise to cleanse the country of terror activities and militancy. The past few months have seen a massive decrease in terror activities in North Eastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram waged war aganst Nigerians for almost 6 years.
Yesterday, the Nigerian Air force suddenly invaded the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport around midday, to passengers’ surprise.
It took a while before passengers realized it was only a simulation, and that there were no terrorists in the airport.
The simulation was based on a terrorist hijacking situation in the airport, and the Air Force got to test it’s extraction strength.
The scene was too real, mainly because the passengers at the airport were not informed before, and some were naturally scared.
Imagine just sitting on your own at the airport and you see a hoard of soldiers carrying guns, emerge from nowhere!
After all the Jet Li moves, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Sadique Abubakar said the simulation was to show Nigerians the Force’s willingness to keep the country safe and terror free.
There will also be simulation exercises in Lagos, Kano and Rivers states, so don’t be scared if you happen to be at the airport when it happens! What do you think of the simulations?
On September 7, the people from Apple decided to release their latest gadgets from the iPhone 7 series, the Apple Watch 2 and the incredible wireless Airpods.
What makes this news more delicious is that, the cheapest iPhone 7 costs roughly 300,000 in Naira.
1. People on Twitter kuku carried the matter on their heads, because who doesn’t want to chook mouth in such good news?
We like the iPhone sha and if anybody buys for us, we won’t do shakara, we’ll manage it like that jare. Share your thoughts on this wonderful phone in the comments section.
In 2014, Nigerian comedian, A.Y Makun, produced his 1st film, ’30 Days In Atlanta’ which went on to become to become the highest-grossing movie in the history of Nigerian cinema with a box-office total of N137 million.
Proving that 2016 is a great year for Nollywood, ’30 Days In Atlanta’ is the first Nigerian movie to be featured in the Guinness World Book of Records.
Sharing the news via Instagram, A.Y explained how his movie was recognised as one of the films with the highest domestic gross in Bollywood, Nollywood and Hollywood.
It’s obvious that the only way for Nollywood is up. We hope they keep up their efforts to produce quality movies for Nigerians and the rest of the world.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a painful process of removing parts of the female external genitalia, normally for prepubescent children, to reduce or curb their sexual urges. It has been widely described as unsafe and unhealthy, especially because it’s done with crude tools and without anesthetics to dull the pain.
Recently, Egyptian MP, Elhamy Aghina, said women must accept FGM to control their sexual urges.
What? Does this man realize FGM is extremely painful for women, and has been proven to be medically unsafe?
Apparently, the MP believes women should control their ‘female lust’, because Egyptian men are ‘sexually weak’.
According to The Times UK, Elhamy even said FGM is the only thing that would make men and women equal in Egypt.
A simple google search will show any reasonable person that FGM has no health benefits for women and girls, and in fact, causes severe urinary problems and risks during childbirth.
Also, an estimated 200 million women and girls have undergone FGM in the world!
When a highly placed lawmaker says FGM is the only way men and women can be equal.
In this day and age of innovation and technology, it looks like some leaders are determined to draw women back, instead of addressing societal problems women face! What do you think about the Egyptian MP’s take on FGM in the country?
Few days into September 2016, Cross Rivers State governor, Ben Ayade, announced the state’s intention to float its own airline.
As expected, Nigerians couldn’t be any more happier about this development especially with the sudden closure of some airlines *coughs* Aero contractors *coughs*.
But you can imagine our shock when we found out the proposed name of the airline is ‘Cally Air’.
Na wa o! They couldn’t just make the effort to come up with a better name.
Although this perfectly describes how Nigerian airlines are currently run, we hope they get this one right.
We’re seriously judging whoever came up with this name sha. Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments section.
So, we were just minding our business, strolling through social media and constituting a nuisance, when we came across a very interesting set of Nollywood pictures.
Please, ladies and gentlemen help us see something amazing:
Earlier in 2016, the student union members of UNILAG staged a protest against the university management concerning the state of welfare of the students, which resulted in the school being shut down for weeks.
In the face of these events, some of the student union leaders were rusticated for their participation including Adeyeye Olorunfemi.
Interestingly, Adeyeye’s biggest crime was the unapologetic Facebook post he wrote that contained harsh words about the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahman Bello.
And now Adeyeye is once again protesting his rustication along with other students and he’s not mincing words at all.
We were in our lane as usual when we saw one very interesting gist. Apparently, a banker in Lagos tweeted in very strong terms about hating his job, and got fired the very next day! Obviously, his coworkers had seen it and shared it till it got to a boss who seemed to take it very personal.
According to this twitter user, his friend was just trying to vent about his job.
This just happened to a friend. He works with a Financial institution on Lagos Island. He was said to have posted “Fuck, I hate my Job”
Earlier this month, we came across this shocking and unbelievable tweet.
According to reports on social media, 6-month-old Hajara was raped by Shuaibu Yakubu Abdullahi, a deaf 40-year-old teacher, which led to the rupturing of her intestines.
Miraculously, poor Hajara is still alive, but currently under critical monitoring in a specialist hospital in Kano State.
To aggravate the issue, after getting arrested by the NSCDC, the rapist was released on bail by the police!
Stand To End Rape (STER), a non-profit organisation advocating for an end to gender-based violence, took up the case, and tried to reach out to the Force Gender Unit of the Nigerian Police Force , but only got referred to an NGO.
According to them, the NGO has been unavailable to STER.
Twitter is understandably very angry about the whole situation.
Why should this man be allowed to roam the streets freely?
We need to see more affirmative action concerning gender-based violence and child abuse from the authorities as well as citizens.
The Nigerian Police ought to aggressively follow up on Baby Hajara’s case and all rape cases going forward. Rape is an extremely horrifying act of violence, especially against a child. The society should be safe for all; no parent should have to worry about their kids being raped or abused! It is doubly important that justice be served, and swiftly too!
While we are not clear on all the details, some reports on social media stated that the Landlord owed the government permit payments for the structural extensions on his property which housed the businesses that were demolished.
However, speaking to TVC on the show ‘Your View’ yesterday, Steve Ayorinde, the Lagos Commissioner of Information and Strategy stated that the occupants and landlords had been served notifications of illegal structure, a demolition notice as well as a pasted notice on the building in March 2016. He further stressed that the demolitions had nothing to do with permit payments owed to the state.
Regardless of the circumstances, we really hope the business owners are able to come out of this stronger and better.
We know she was only trying to be deep, but our bank accounts and wallets are saying something else.
Next time the minister should try apologising, instead of being dodgy. Recession is not a joke, we need real and sustainable solutions, not fake, deep quotes.
On August 30, Jidenna landed in Lagos to kick off his West African tour. While we are very excited about that, we have to admit that his ankara swag has caught our eye. Just look at this peng, well-tailored Ankara shirt please.
To start things off, he was hosted to a meet and greet by ‘Enjoy Lagos’ on the night of his arrival.
He thoroughly slayed in this ankara-patterned shirt and matching pants he wore, while on a radio tour the next day.
This trip has helped highlight something we all may have missed; Jidenna’s tailor deserves an award!
Because his ankara game is so amazing.
It’s hard to get over how well tailored this outfit is.
The pattern combinations are just perfect.
Verily, verily, no one else can rock this ankara set better than Jidenna did.
With all this amazing evidence, it’s pretty clear that Jidenna’s tailor has not one, but two very stylish heads!” #JidennasTailorForPresident
First of all, we are so pained that nobody reminded us yesterday was the day we’ve all been waiting for! For those that are not aware, yesterday was Bobrisky’s birthday, and it was celebrated at Escape Nightclub. Bobrisky is one of the most popular Nigerians on Snapchat. See all the action that went down at the party sha.
1. Can your makeup ever be as ‘on-fleek’ as this ?
2. Just look at all the shine-shine on this golden shoe!
3. We are too in love with this glittery outfit.
4. And Bob slayed us in another popping onesie.
5. Our hearts can only take so much glam from one person.
6. Some people are speculating as to where Bobrisky got all the outfit inspiration from.
We were just passing through Twitter, doing our usual amebo work when gist of a Nigerian man’s marriage requirements went viral.
Oduneye Ridwan Folorunso, who was wife-hunting via his Facebook page, listed the qualities he wanted and even asked interested women to apply, talk about confidence.
According to him, he wants a wife that is still in control of her “virgin on touch”.
And the funniest part, he also wants an intelligent but idiotic woman.
We’re not lying, just look at the list.
Na wa o! Out of everything he listed, he only has 5 things to offer any woman he plans to marry.
This is a really confusing matter sha. What do you think of this man’s ‘special’ marriage requirements? Share your thoughts on this in the comments section.
Female students at one of South Africa’s leading multinational schools, Pretoria Girls High, have staged a huge protest against its code of conduct which has been described as racist towards its African students.
According to the protesters, students who have contemporary African hair texture are forced to arrange their hair differently and are often asked to straighten their hair to make it look ‘tidy’.
The school which was open to white people only during the Apartheid has also banned students from speaking African languages within the school premises.
He has now been inducted into the Island fit-fam club, after going on a run on Lagos’ current infrastructural pride and joy, the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge, this morning.
Many people are particularly tickled by his easy breezy movement around the city, even though we are very sure he has incredibly tight, serious security.
$54 bn walking anyhow in Yaba. Meanwhile one ogre will be blowing siren ween ween ween cuz he's Local Govt Chairman https://t.co/iE7bLagO8S
With all the noise on social media, we are all aware that Mark Zuckerberg has made his first visit to Nigeria. We are glad he has come chill with us; maybe they were kuku stressing him in America. But we just have a few questions for him sha.
1. Will Daddy Mark help us tell our parents that’s it pronounced Face-book not ‘Faize boook’?
2. We heard he likes charities. Is he aware all of us at Zikoko are named Charity?
3. Is it true he has confirmed the deliciousness of Nigerian jollof?
4. Uncle Mark, how far that 1 billion you’re not using?
5. Is he and our mummy willing to adopt more kids? Because we are very available sir!
6. Is Lagos traffic better than the one in America?
7. Is it true he has been introducing himself like ‘Hi, I’m Mark”? Because we are very aware of who you are sir!
8. Did Uncle Mark enjoy his morning jog on Ikoyi Bridge? Sorry we could not join sir.
While people in this part of the world were asleep, A-List celebrities around the world were getting turnt at the 2016 edition of the VMAs which happened on August 28th.
Proving her international exposure status, Tiwa Savage attended the event in a yellow dress and even took pictures with celebrities like Jidenna and DJ Khaled.
Some of the celebs obviously came to slay.
Some just be bothered about slaying on the red carpet, we’re not judging sha.
But that’s not why we’re here.
We’re here to tell you how Beyonce basically stole the show and put it in her pocket.
If you don’t believe us, this video is enough proof.
https://twitter.com/MTV/status/770112782612258816
This was team Zikoko after watching Beyonce’s performance:
But we’re not the only ones that feel this way, the internet has gone wild!
If you’re still alive after Beyoncé’s performance last night, you’re in luck! 1) You're not dead 2) It's five minutes 'til showtime!
So at the VMA Awards, Kanye West premiered a new video for the song “Fade” from his album “The Life of Pablo”. The incredibly hot Teyana Taylor (who is now our gymspiration) starred in the video.
You can watch the video below, but in the meantime we at Zikoko have a few questions for her!
2 years ago, Nigerian photographer, Ayo Akinwande, started shooting his photo series, Orekelewa, the first of his long-term project, ‘Women of Africa’.
In this series, Ayo captured these beautiful Nigerian grandmas with the aim of portraying their beauty, strength and values.
Check out more pictures from the series below:
Just look at her fleeking brows. Their makeup was done by Desmond Soso.
They were all styled by Adeniji Opeyemi and Seyi Kafi.
Jamming to music via Beats headphones will make anyone smile like this.
Just see how peng they look with their geles and heels.
Not every time form serious, sometimes pout for a selfie.
She looks amazing with her beach hat.
If you want to view more pictures from Ayo, head to his Instagram page via @Iamayoakinwande.
In the light of the terror attacks that have plagued France in 2016, the French government decided that banning a piece of clothing, the Burkini, is the most brilliant way to end terrorism in the country.
On August 23, some armed police officers in France went as far as making a Muslim woman take her clothes off which resembled a Burkini, while she was on the beach with her little son.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Police regarding its recruitment, it won’t be business as usual in the Force.
Successful applicants to the Force will now be required to undergo lie detector tests, to ensure all applicants are not shady individuals.
This is great in so many ways, because we actually did not expect such initiative from the Nigerian Police.
So if you lied on your application, we are really, truly sorry for you; because unless you have strong juju, you’ll be caught.
Other compulsory tests will include background checks, biometrics, medical and physical examinations, aptitude tests as well as oral and psychological tests.
The NPF plans to make things easy for applicants; all Police Training Colleges across the country will be equipped to carry out the tests.
We hope the tests are effective and the Nigerian Police Force recruits policemen and women who will face their work and not be a pain in our necks.
But that’s not why we’re here sha. Gist just broke that this unpopular pastor was arrested for fraud.
According to the report, he’s currently in jail for being involved in an alleged 11.6 million Ghana Cedis fraud.
The complainant claimed that he gave Pastor Obinim the large amount of money as payment for spiritual assistance. Unfortunately, the pastor didn’t deliver.
In addition to this fraud wahala, he’s also being charged for physical assault of the two people he flogged in his church.
We’re not going to say anything sha. Just let us know what you think in the comments section.
