In April of this year, 4 Malawians, including a baby were murdered. Their crime? They were albinos. Albinism is a genetic condition resulting in little or no pigmentation in the skin, eyes, and hair. In countries like Nigeria, albinos face societal discrimination, but in countries like Malawi and Tanzania, their bones are hunted for ritual purposes.
The Mr and Miss Albinism contest that held in Nairobi on October 21, was no small deal.
Bigwig politicians including Isaac Mwaura, Kenya’s only albino Member of Parliament, were present at the first-of-it’s-kind event.
In all, 20 contestants got dolled up to cat-walk, sing and dance for the competition.
The contest was aimed at changing the narrative and showcasing the beauty of albinos in Kenya, and in Africa.
Many African countries see albinism as a curse, but Kenya is redefining what it means to be an albino.
MP Isaac Mwuara, who spearheaded the contest, said he wants to make the world understand albinos are not meant for money rituals.

In 2009, Maria Grette, a 69-year-old Swedish woman fell in love with Johnny, a 58-year-old Danish she met on the internet- or so she thought.
Little did she realize Johnny was a 24-year-old Nigerian graduate, who remained unemployed 2 years after getting his first degree.
She didn’t suspect anything at first, until he told her he got robbed and shot in Nigeria, where he claimed to be visiting. He started to request for huge amounts of medical fees, as he alleged that he couldn’t make transfers from his account due to technicalities.

Anyway, Johnny, the scammer (not his real name), confessed to Maria after she’d stopped sending money and stopped picking his calls. Apparently, he was repentant and wanted her to forgive him.
Instead of getting angry and escalating it, Ms Grette decided to visit Nigeria that year, to see how she could help some of Nigeria’s youth. She now helps African artists get to international exhibitions where they can show their art to a wider client range.

Apparently, some people living in 2016, find it hard to understand that a 14-year-old person is still a child and isn’t capable of making certain life decisions.
According to reports, a 14-year-old girl, Habiba Isa, who was abducted by a certain Jamilu Lawal sometime in August 2016, converted to Islam and was then forcefully married to the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumin Usman.
Habiba’s concerned parents, in the search for justice, contacted members of the Katsina State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, who also took this case up.
However, the Katsina Emirate Council stated the marriage between the 14 year-old and the 65-year-old Emir was irreversible as there was no “evidence” that Habiba was forced to act against her wish.
It is still shocking how people in power continue to take advantage of young girls, while hiding behind culture and misrepresentation of religion.
For the olodo people with blocked ears at the back, a 14-year-old who cannot even vote, is not capable of making life-changing decisions such as marriage!
