The AMCVA (Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards) 2016 took place a few weeks ago. Nigerian magazine, This Day Style, in their latest issue, published the best-dressed actors and actresses on their front cover.
Then the controversy began. Some people felt that This Day Style was biased for not including Yoruba actors and actresses (a.k.a Yorrywood) on their front cover. By consensus, most people agree that one actress in particular more than qualified to be on it.
She’s Mercy Aigbe-Gentry, the Yoruba movie actress.
Some Nigerians saw it as a snub, because she only acts in Yoruba movies.
Mercy is in agreement with her fans and called This Day Style out for it.
She said, “Hey Fam…. so I just came back from church and decided to check IG only for me to see plenty tags on a particular pix posted by @thisdaystyle …..I read pple’s comments asking why Mercy isn’t on the cover and at first I wanted to waka pass, but on a second thought I decided to talk about it, cos it’s been an issue dat has lingered for too long!…….I thought to myself why didn’t Mercy make the cover of @thisdaystyle best dressed list?…. Has @thisdaystyle ever featured a yoruba actor on their cover?………are yoruba movies not part of nollywood? …..is Nollywood not supposed to mean home grown Nigerian movies? …..hmmmmm I am very sure they didn’t coz, they won’t want to STAIN their cover with a ‘RAZZ’ ‘LOCAL’ yoruba actor!….Yes I am razz, Yes I am local and Yes I am a Yoruba actor!…..No I refuse to speak ur almighty English with fake British or American accent!….Because I’ll always remain true to myself!…I am ME ….Proud Benin Woman, Proud Ijesha’s wife and above all proud Nigerian. …And just in case e still dey be una like dream ‘LOCAL TI TAKE OVER’ ….“
She wore this beautiful floor-length silver beaded dress by House of Luminee to the awards show.
And you will agree that she killed it! The mother of two was looking hot.
Really, she should have made the cover and now we come to think of it, we are yet to see Yorrywood people on This Day Style’s cover oh.
Yorrywood is still part of Nollywood. They are important too.
It seems like Yorrywood has decided that enough is enough.
Ardent lovers of football will recognise names like Cynthia Uwak, Courtney Dike and Asisat Oshoala in the female football industry.
These footballers are part of the women who keep the game as interesting as the contemporary football matches played by their male colleagues.
Dropping out of school to pursue a career in professional football, Asisat got her big break when she got offered a chance to represent Nigeria at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014.
She brought all her skills to the field and earned herself the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards for her brilliant performance throughout the tournament.
This trailblazer joined the Nigerian Senior female team, the Super Falcons, to represent Nigeria at the African Women’s Championship.
The team won the tournament and she was presented with the golden ball award for being the best player in the competition.
In 2015, she joined international football club managed by Matt Beard, Liverpool Ladies.
The London Assembly which is part of the Greater London Authority, scrutinizes the activities of the Mayor of London. The body has the power to hold the Mayor and Mayoral advisers accountable by publicly examining policies and programmes.
Her name is Florence Eshalomi, a resident of South London.
Florence has lived in South London all her life. She is the eldest child from a single-parent family. She’s also the first to attend higher education.
She began handling big responsiblities at a really young age.
She started working at the age of sixteen and takes care of her mother who suffers from sickle cell anaemia. She had to juggle the demands of family responsibilities, education and employment at the same time.
Since joining politics, Florence has held various key positions at different times.
She was elected to Lambeth Council in 2006, 2010 and 2014, representing Brixton Hill ward. She has worked in the public, private and charitable sectors in a number of different campaigning, research and public affairs roles. She has taken a leading role in local and national campaigns to encourage more young people and people from under-represented background to become more active in public life, politics and the arts.
She is currently the Public Affairs Manager at the Runnymede Trust, UK’s leading independent race equality institution.
Now, she’s about to join the London Assembly.
If elected, our wonderful @FloEshalomi -who has been an excellent Brixton Hill Cllr- will be the first ever Nigerian on the @LondonAssembly!
We really hope she gets this position!
Update: We previously wrote that Florence Eshalomi might be the first Nigerian to join the London Assembly. She isn’t the first to do so. Kemi Badenoch was the foremost to join the Assembly. Florence might be the first to be elected.
Let’s go a little back in time to the elections period in Nigeria.
To when realistic and unrealistic promises were made, and “generous”politicians suddenly remembered the hungry, starving, Nigerian masses.
And since honesty isn’t necessarily a Nigerian trait..
Many politicians shared branded food items (and other gifts) which were eagerly received by some greedy voters.
Packaged rice.
For those that place Jollof above necessary infrastructure that should be provided by Nigerian leaders.
Odourless Fufu
In case the smell of mainstream Fufu gets in the way.
And recharge card to call the love of your life.
Aren’t our politicians just thoughtful?
Let’s flip the script and go to Europe where this politician is going to spend two years in prison.
Florin Popescu, a Romanian politician is being jailed for a crime he committed in 2012 while he was lobbying for votes for his re-election into office as a council leader.
He used his political position to secure an order of 60 tonnes of fried chicken worth $85,000 and shared it to voters in a bid to make them vote for him.
He loaded the chicken packages into trailers and distributed them at several locations. Although he resigned earlier in February 2016 and claimed it was for the “good of the country”, Florin currently nicknamed the Chicken Baron will be cooling off in prison for two years as part of Romania’s crackdown on Kwaraption!
Will this kind of crackdown ever happen in Nigeria?
We wait.

African hair has undergone a tremendous evolution, from naturally curly or kinky hair to the chemically straightened hair to weaves and weave-ons.
Black people have over centuries, found ways to change the way their natural hair is, just to fit in with society.
Kinky hair was seen as inferior to long wavy hair. Men and women have long began to embrace their God-given textures.
Choosing to buck the norm, they’re all going back to base.
But some workplaces in these modern times still find natural hair unacceptable, as this young Ghanaian-Canadian lady came to find out.
Akua Agyemfra is a 20-year-old Humanities student at York University in Canada.
She got a job as a server at a restaurant in Toronto.
Like most college students, she got a job at to be able to pay the bills.
On her third day of training, she was sent home for wearing her hair in a bun.
According to her, the assistant general manager of the restaurant told her she was not allowed to wear her hair in a bun, saying it was company policy. The manager said her her hair had to be worn straight down.
The manager said she expected servers to look like they’re going to the club, not coming from one.
Yes. she said that. Please, how does wearing a bun look like one is “coming from a club”? That doesn’t make any sense. Akua showed the manager that her natural hair doesn’t fall straight. But she was still sent home.
Being a non-confrontational person, she left without standing her ground.
She realized when she went home that it was a violation of her rights. Sending her home based on her hair is wrong.
Akua said, “Management at Jack Astor’s did NOT specify that I had to wear my hair down every single shift. If they did, I would have NOT taken the job because I know my hair cannot be straight everyday. I had extensions during my interview and my two training shifts. After I took out my braids, my Afro didn’t not comply to the “straight hair” rule. To maintain it and look presentable, I had to put it in a bun.“
She has since quit her job at the restaurant. But she didn’t take the situation lying down.
Server told to alter hairAre you black and working in the service industry? Have you been asked to wear your hair differently on the job like Akua Agyemfra? Contact us: tonews@cbc.ca
Posted by CBC Toronto on Thursday, March 10, 2016
Akua sees their dress code as discriminatory. She has shared her story and been interviewed by media outlets and this has led to more awareness about Black people having to alter their hair just to fit in in the work place.
She says “I’m not going to compromise my roots and edges because my employer wants me to. My scalp has a right to breathe just as much as the woman standing beside me.”
You go girl!
But the thing is that this situation happens here in Nigeria where we ought to know better. Some workplaces forbid their employees from having afros or locs.
Banks and most other big corporate organizations are notorious for this.
This needs to change.
Having afro or locs doesn’t prevent people from doing their job.

Everybody — well most people — knows that Donald Trump is bad news. And though he wasn’t taken seriously when he decided to run for president, the whole world is watching his campaign trails and rallies and debates with morbid fascination.
He is anti-Muslim, anti-Black, anti-Latinos. In fact, he is anti-everything!
The man is so dangerous that the possibility of his winning the U.S. presidential election is as big a threat to the global economy as Islamist terrorism, according to Global Forecasting Service.
He’s against what America stands for, a country built with the sweat of immigrants.
Posted by BuzzFeed News on Monday, March 14, 2016
And he offers to pay for their legal fees.
So it wasn’t surprising when this happened at his rally recently. But it hit close to home, because it happened to one of us. A Nigerian.
Adedayo Adeniyi, a 20-year-old student at East Carolina University, attended Donald Trump’s rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina. out of curiosity.
But he was randomly targeted and thrown out of the event by police, because he’s Black!
The shocker happened as he was being escorted out of the event.
A middle aged white man, looked him directly in the face and said, “F you” three times, right before slapping Adedayo hard in the face! This happened while he was being bundled out like a bag of beans.
The gall. The effrontery.
These are scary times, if this is happening in his rally, imagine what will happen if this man actually becomes president! That is enough to give anybody nightmares.
We really hope that this man doesn’t become president, because if he does, this quote perfectly captures what will happen.
We’re also sure that the population of people living in the African continent will definitely increase.
This rescue story reached many parts of the world and touched several hearts including a Norwegian Policeman.
Reading Hope’s story moved Djorn Druglimo and he started collecting football jerseys from his colleagues and willing donors for donation to the orphanage.
Two weeks ago, Hope was finally discharged from the hospital.
And was photographed playing with other children in the orphanage.
It is hard to believe he was the sickly child Anja rescued this year.
He looks really cute here.
In Anja’s recent Facebook post, she shared pictures of him playing and the reason she named him Hope.
“The day I carried this sweet little boy in my arms for the very first time I was so sure he would not survive. Every breath he took was a struggle and I did not want him to die without a name, without dignity, so I named him Hope ❤Hope to me is a special name. Not only the meaning of Hope, but what it stands for. Many years ago I got the name HOPE tattooed on my fingers because to me it means:Help One Person Everyday ✌? HOPE”
It’s amazing to see him transform into a cute, healthy baby after going through such a horrible experience.
Whoever said pictures never lie definitely does not live in this century.
Instagram’s official account on the app has a tradition of engaging their followers by throwing creative photo challenges with various hashtags.
These 11 photos were taken with the aim of creating an optical illusion by simply placing objects or people in different positions and taking the photos from various perspectives.
But the important question is, how was Jhené able to achieve such feat?
Everybody know that it’s not easy to date a Yoruba boy and she managed to marry one.
Is she an Igbo girl?
Though born in the United States, she’s of African American, Japanese, Spanish, Dominican, German Jewish, French, and Native American descent. So it is possible she has an Igbo ancestor. If not, she must have the skills of an Igbo girl! And her middle name is Efuru too.
Respect to them for keeping their private life private. We wish them a happy married life!

If we know one thing, it’s that Nigerians are vocal. Very vocal. We can’t be oppressed or suppressed.
Who wan try?
And with social media, ain’t nobody holding us down.
We speak our mind.
But what happens when Nigerians fed up with our numerous problems attack the wrong person or party?
What is going on here?
That is the story of Nasser Al-Saadi from Qatar and senior executive at Aljazeera, who got caught in the crossfire between the people of Nigeria and the National Assembly.
Nasser’s relationship with Nigeria began in June of 2015. His Twitter handle came under attack from angry Nigerians when the National Assembly began giving more trouble than they already do. The members got a wardrobe allowance that totalled N8.64 billion!
As Nasser’s Twitter handle is @Nass, which is the same as the acronym ‘NASS’ for National Assembly, he got a lot of misplaced fury.
His handle literally became infamous on this side of the world.
That moment when your #Twitter handle becomes "something important" in a different country. #NASS#Nigeria
If you’ve ever wondered if children are more capable of leadership and making decisions than the Nigerian Senate, you wouldn’t be wrong. They keep making decisions and bringing up Bills that boggles the mind. And don’t forget the way they prefer to fight over issues like cats and dogs, than settle things in a matured manner.
Now we hear that the Gender and Equality Bill has been turned down.
Senate President now puts the Bill to Vote and the Nays have. The Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill does not pass second reading.
This Bill should have been passed! It should have been passed like ten years ago! That it is even up for discussion is just unbelievable.
When the Senate who has the responsibility to set things aright, is messing up, it doesn’t bode well for the country. Like, at all!
What are our boys to think?
So the Senate didn’t see a Bill that aims to promote equality, development and advancement of women, as well as freedom of movement, economic activity and access to education as important?!
Do they care about women at all?
The bill would have protected widows, underage girls and rape victims. It would’ve kicked against violence against women! So the vicious circle just continues until something is done.

As if Nigerian medical students don’t have enough to worry about — like strikes, inadequate facilities and whatnot — the National Universities Commission (NUC) has decided to add something else!
According to the Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, all medical students will spend a minimum of ten to eleven years in school before getting their degrees.
According to him, the 2015 document for the training of medical students mandates that students spend four years studying for their first degree in a science-related course. After which they will proceed to medical school to spend another seven years. Which will now be a total of eleven year — four years more than it currently is.
Wait! What?!
Is he joking?
It seems he might not be joking afterall! Proj. Okojie made the announcement while delivering a lecture at the matriculation and inauguration of the University of Medical Science, in Ondo State.
How unfortunate. Very unfortunate.
We know they’re trying to copy the foreign system of medical education, but this one is too much now!
In the American school system for example, students go for a pre-med degree for four years, before medical school, which is another four years. Then three to seven years residency and fellowship.
It’s different if they actually plan to make infrastructure and facilities available and up to standard.
But knowing Nigeria, that will probably never happen.
If this is actually implemented, just imagine what will happen. By the time medical students are through, their counterparts would have gone far in life.
This is so sad! It’s so unfair!

So Falz Da Bahd guy dropped a new music video and the mini movie is already a challenge to Nollywood.
These are the thoughts that crossed our mind while watching it.
Leggo!
Of course it’s by Bahd Guys Records.
Ah! This one is a movie oh.
Yes! Adeyemi Okanlawon! This is Clarence Peters handwork too.
Ah! Indeed this is a movie!
Is this view from a helicopter or a drone?
Falz has become a news reporter. Lmao! Shawn Stober.
Ah! They kidnapped Simi.
Rescue mission on the way!
Lmao! See Adeyemi’s face. Looks like the rescue mission was successful.
Okay. Flashback.
Liking how local they went for the video.
Fine boys, no pimples.
Aww. He’s going to surprise his bae.
It’s like they’re not a couple yet. See the serious eye she’s giving him.
Yasss! The song has begun. Skip to 5:25 mins if you don’t want to watch the drama.
Her friends are not nice oh. All this shege for one person.
Nice ad placement.
Nawa oh. Stand off because of love.
Eh heh! Sexy teacher.
Falz has become a stalker. She doesn’t want oh.
The Yoruba mother has arrived. Lmao! He is finished!
Eh ya. Look at him. Because of a girl.
She finally changed her mind. Lol!
This bomb blast na one in town!
They kidnapped all the girls!
Wow! See abs! See chocolate abs!
Adeyemi is using Simi to blackmail him.
What?! There’s part three?! Seriously?! It has turned into a Nollywood movie series! And it was about to get really good too!
Is this a music video or a movie? Either way, we love it! It was rather entertaining. This is obviously the continuation of the Jamb Question video. Although Adeyemi is the bad guy here, we still like him jaare! Falz and Simi have undeniable chemistry and they’re really great actors. This video is obviously a combination of good music and good cinematography. Definitely looking forward to part three!
Sometimes he spends his hard-earned cash to share longer forms of these nuggets.
From the article he posted on Linda Ikeji, women should only aspire to be lovely and not sexy….
Because lovely women are better than sexy women.
Sexiness is Satanic…
“….I am convinced Satan promotes the word sexy so we can see women as sex objects….”
And Esther in the Bible was not a sexy woman…
“Why did Esther obtain this favour? It is a historical fact that King Xerxes had many SEXY women in his harem. Yet despite the multiplicity of sexiness available to him, it was the LOVELY Esther he chose as his queen…”
Even animals are not sexy….
“Even among animals, a lioness is a lovely animal and that is why she stays in a pride with her lion mate. The lion will protect her and together they will raise a family of cubs that stay with them until they start their own pride or are absorbed into another pride.”
What if his bitter truth is rather misogynistic?
“That is just the bitter truth. Some may call me misogynistic but I have a wife and a daughter that will testify to how I treat them like queens. Truth is bitter, lies are butter. One will purge you while the other will make you fat!”
Oga, they aren't mutually exclusive, just like how you can both be Reno Omokri and Wendell Simlin. https://t.co/Gbp8A4NMhD

We all know her as the hilarious comedienne, Chigul, but in this documentary by Kemi Adetiba, Chioma Omeruah showed the world her emotional side.
Nigerian music director and film maker, Kemi Adetiba recently launched a documentary series themed “King Women”.
Featuring other successful Nigerian women such as TY Bello and Taiwo Ajayi -Lycett,
this series seeks to share the glory and pain behind their success so as to paint a realistic picture of what real life role models go through.
In a recently released teaser of the King Women series, Chigul shared how much she quarreled with her mother especially when she had marital crisis.
She said “…I resented her because I felt I was going through a tough time in my marriage and she was just telling me, Go back to your husband, Go back to your husband”.
Not losing her humourous touch, she explained how everybody around insisted on her holding on to an already failing marriage.
“Is anybody asking me what’s going on with me and how I feel and how it’s doing me in my body? Did anybody care?”
She tearfully mentioned how hurt and disappointed she was after her marriage fell apart.
“When my marriage fell apart, I failed at something and I had nowhere to land. Like, it fell apart and I didn’t want it to fall apart and I feel like I disappointed my dad because we talked about it before he died”.
And despite going through so much all by herself…
“No one was there and I wanted people to be there. I wanted to be able to go to my mom and say I’m tired…. And she’d just always say “Go back to your husband”.
And learning of her husband’s love child with another woman…
“When I found that my mom, like she knew, I was like, I’m done with everybody, don’t talk to me! But I later thought about it like how was she supposed to bring that to me, like news? Like gist?
She still loves her mother and is grateful for the milestones in her career but also wants to have her own children.
“I wanted to give her grandchildren. I wanted us to bond over those things. My success with my life, my career is great, it’s wonderful. But I want other things”.
The Inspector General of Police recently disclosed that the Nigerian Police Force has spent roughly 600 million Naira on the importation of dogs from South Africa in the last couple years.
The Inspector-General, Solomon Arase stated that 400 K-9 dogs will be bred in Nigeria rather than spending all that money on importing foreign breeds.
This means the Buy Naija movement has spread to the Nigerian police.
Maybe Daddy Fashola can pump all that saved money into the power sector so Nigerians can get better supply of electricity.
No shade to these dogs but will the locally bred police dogs be groomed like the Nigerian dogs we all know of?
When you find out the police spent 600 million on dogs but can’t arrest the armed robbers troubling your street.
Why haven’t we seen these dogs patrolling the streets with the Police Patrol Team?
When you realise all that money could have solved the “Madam, we no get fuel for our van” problems.
Or used to improve the deplorable conditions of police cells and their inmates.
Anyway, this project will definitely save lots of money for the country. We hope these locally bred dogs get to finally serve the country this time around.
Then, just in case there were still people in the world that failed to see the initial photos, she shared this one again for International Women’s Day.
Africa as a continent has a lot of catching up to do with the rest of the science world. Nigerians on Twitter re-imagined Albert Einstein as an African and their tweets were hilarious.
1. We wouldn’t be thanking anybody for bringing Facebook to Nigeria.
But they are still very relevant and making changes in Africa!
What if the next Einstein is African?

It seems like the mercy period for the Minister of Power, Works and Housing is over. As the former governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Fashola impressed Nigerians and the rest of the world with his dedication and the transformation of Eko.
So when he was handed the mantle of leadership of not one, not two, but three important ministries in the country, on November 11, 2015, Nigerians gave him some time to do his magic.
But now, the believe is that he’s had more than enough time to have done something tangible.
Power generation initially peaked at 5,074.7 megawatts, in February 2015 — which was a new record in the history of Nigeria’s electricity generation profile. But it has, since then, fallen to an all time low of 1,580.6MW megawatts.
Electricity supply has gotten progressively worse since 2016 began and Nigerians cannot take it any longer.
Nigerians took to Twitter to express their displeasure.
Some wondered if he was even in office.
My APC friends, can you tell Nigerians when our Super Minister, Fashola is resuming office as Minister of Power, Works and Housing?
— Lere Olayinka – Aresa 1 (@OlayinkaLere) March 3, 2016
Some were not surprised by the state of things, but by Fashola’s silence.
The terrible power situation doesn't surprise me; Nigeria is a dysfunctional mess. "Super minister" Fashola's silence is baffling.
Stepping down from their various positions of work in the Kenyan government during the 70s, these women retired to the ultimate baby girl lifestyle.
They now spend their time travelling to exotic tourists sites in Africa and partying exclusively.
Catching up with three of them in Somalia, self-taught Kenyan digital artist and photographer, Osborne Macharia, together with his team created beautiful portraits of them just in time for International Women’s Day.
After failing an exam while studying Architecture at university, Osborne stumbled on the work of sensational photographer, Joey Lawrence and got inspired. He has since used his pictures as a means of showing the beautiful side of his country to the world.
Here are the portraits from the Project Nyanye shoot:

She was the Economist and Personal Advisor to the Kenyan president between 1972 and 1992.
Ms. M. Adhiambo
She served as the Minister of Trade and Industry from 1972 to 1980.
Mrs Kamau Njuguna
She was the Governor of Central Bank of Kenya between 1980 and 1985.

Not every time complain about how difficult chemistry or any other subject is, it’s not always rocket science.
Sometimes, comparing some scientific terms to real-life people or situations can be an easy way to answer these questions. Oya, thank us for this life hack.
This student was asked to define electro-negativity in a question that carried 5 extra marks.
And instead of simply defining the exact thing the teacher taught, the student added jara just to show how much the concept was understood.
“Yes, I’m getting this 5pts! To properly articulate what electronegativity is, I would like to draw your attention to Trey Songz a.k.a Mr Steal your gurl. You see Trey has no chill, he’s a killer, a savage. He steals other men’s girls without any remorse. Electronegativity is a concept with a lot of Trey like behaviour. It’s the ability for an atom to take another atom’s electron with Flourine being the OG Trey Songz because it has the highest electronegativity of all the elements, straight stealing them.
That’s an A+ answer Ms Chery.”
For those of you wondering who Mr Steal Your Girl is…
And with this amount of buffness (and very little singing prowess), this man goes forth snatching people’s girlfriends up and down.
Points for creativity!!! This students scored all of the 5 points with this answer.
If this student were Nigerian, the story may turn out differently though. How dare you answer a question this creatively?
Only bad Nigerian children know how Trey Songz steals girls instead of cramming every single word in their notes.

In a world where gender inequality and patriarchy thrive, people in powerful positions ought to work together to provide equal opportunities for everyone.
The International Women’s Day was set side to recognise and celebrate all the women of the world for their social, political and economic achievements.
In this gathering that costs Nigeria over 120 billion Naira annually…
One would think lasting solutions to the country’s problems are discussed and implemented.
Unfortunately, our Nigerian senators would rather engage in Oshodi fights.
Or re-enact scenes from Prison Break…
Or sometimes compare Nigerian women to objects.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGKZBs-p5a0
And on International Women’s Day rather than address issues such as child marriage, rape, infringed rights to education and other pressing issues…
Senate Leader Ali Ndume supports the Motion, urging men to not just be friends with women but marry them and as well take care of women.
Balaraba Ramat Yakubu is one of the few indigenous authors whose works have been translated into another language and made into a movie.
She is also one of the pioneer writers of Littattafan Soyayya (Books of love) genre which started and has now become popular in Northern Nigeria.
However her life as an author didn’t start as beautifully as the books she wrote…
At 12, Balaraba Ramat Yakubu was pulled out of school by her father when he discovered she had been secretly going to school and married her off to a 40 year old man despite protests from her older brother, Murtala Mohammed (former Military Ruler of Nigeria).
And because she was the imperfect wife who couldn’t conveniently boil even a pot of water, she was sent back to her parents, in disgrace.
The end of her first marriage strengthened her resolve to get an education even more. With help from her mother, she attended adult education classes themed at reading and writing Hausa under the guise of learning sewing and knitting.
Her father discovered her primary school certificate and simply responded by informing her of another arranged marriage.
At 15, she walked into her second marriage with a little sense of fulfilment at having at least an elementary education. However, this marriage was unsuccessful because she was “too independent” and wasn’t as obedient as her husband wanted her to be.
At 18, she was once again sent back to her parents but she stood her ground to complete her education this time around.
She enrolled at the Kano State Agency for Mass Education and later went on to teach other women Hausa language.
Two failed marriages and 5 children later, Balaraba gave up on the institution of marriage and focused on her writing career.
Her first book, Budurwar Zuciya meaning ‘Young At Heart’ was published in 1987. In 1990, she published Wa Zai Auri Jahila (Who will marry an ignorant woman) which was inspired by her life as a child bride and centered around a 13 year old girl who was pulled out of school and forced to marry an elderly man.
And in spite of the ground she has gained among her readers, she received threatening letters and was the subject of criticism from religious clerics.
However, she continues to write stories that address rape, child marriage, maltreatment of women and domestic violence, all in Hausa language.
Some of her work have been translated into English. An excerpt of Wa Zai Auri was also translated into English by Carmen McCain.
At 57, she continues to speak out against injustice against women especially in Northern Nigeria and works as the program officer coordinating trauma counselling at the Murtala Mohammed Foundation.
With help from the team at the foundation, she counsels victims affected by Boko Haram attacks and offers them support.
Women face hardships everyday, including being forced by circumstances or people to sell their bodies to make ends meet.
That is the story of Jacqueline, an 18 year old girl from Uganda.
Due to a lack of support from her parents and financial troubles, Jacqueline entered the sex slave trade at the age of 16, just to be able to put herself through school.
Her work in the sex industry began after she shared the tough financial situation she was in with her neighbour.
The neighbour then helped her get a job as a bar attendant. From working in the bar she joined the trade to make ends meet to support her sick aunt and her sick aunt’s kids.
Jacqueline had to sleep with three to four men a day, in a bid to make a reasonable amount of money.
She made between 30,000 to 40,000 Uganda shillings ($9 to $12 or N2880 to N3840) from that.
Her life continued that way until a saviour, in the form of a social worker, came to her rescue.
The woman told her about the Partnership for Empowerment of Vulnerable Girls and Women project (PEVUS), an initiative that works with young women to educate them on their rights and sexual health and helps them learn new skills. Though Jacqueline was sceptical at first, she decided to check them out, because she had nothing to lose. She accepted their support in April 2015 and was trained for free.
Two years later and with a toddler that resulted from her stint as a sex worker, Jacqueline is now an electrician.
She plans to acquire a diploma and degree in Electronics and be an inspiration to young girls so that they can aspire to be and do anything they want to.
She’s also grateful that she has the means to provide for and take care of her one-year-old child.
So, on March 7, Maria Sharapova, the seventh most famous tennis player in the world and the highest-earning female athlete in the world, confessed that she’d been doping for a decade, though according to her, she’d been doing it unknowingly.
And in just one day, she lost the endorsement she had with sportswear giant, Nike, since she was 11 years old. Also, Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer and German carmaker Porsche have postponed planned activities with her until the situation becomes clearer. Sharapova possibly facing a two to four year suspension, which will, without a doubt, destroy her career.
She said that the drug had been given to her my her family doctor and had been taken the drug since 2006 for health issues and didn’t know that it had been banned in January of 2015. Her excuse sounds reasonable enough, until you really pay attention and follow what happened.
1. She’d been taking the drug Melodium, which is normally prescribed to angina patients, for 10 years.
Angina patients take this drug because of their heart condition, which caused them to receive insufficient oxygen. But athletes like and take it because it helps their endurance and ability to recover from intensive exercise. That in itself should have been a red light for her.
2. Sharapova said she had been getting the flu (a type of cold) every couple months, had abnormal electrocardiogram readings and had symptoms of diabetes, which runs in her family.
So, if she did, how does a drug for patients with a heart disease relate to her health problem?
3. The World Anti-Doping Agency had sent her an email, on 22 December 2015, informing her of changes to the banned list.
But according to her, she had failed to “click” on the link that would have detailed the prohibited items. That is funny, because if you’re one of the world’s best athlete’s, isn’t it important to check it out the list?
Wow, it seems that most athletes are doping in one form or the other.
According to BBC, it is believed that hundreds of athletes have been using this drug and a lot more cases will become public in the near future.

Apparently, the Nigerian police force in spite of not having adequate space for human detainees, have started arresting animals.
Will these goats be detained with other humans?
What offence did these poor goats commit?
Were they even lead into their cells in handcuffs?
In the wee hours of March 7, a police patrol team accosted a red Mitsubitshi car around Sekona junction in Osun state.
After the driver of the vehicle refused to stop on the order of the police, the patrol team launched an unsuccessful chase of the car, as per fast and furious.
The driver sharply parked the car and escaped before the police could get to him. Unfortunately, these poor goats were found in the vehicle.
The Osun state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Folasade Odoro has said the goats will be detained until their owners show up.
But what if the owners don’t come back for their goats?
Are they going to rot in their ‘cells’ like the human suspects who have spent endless years in police detention without any hopes of going into trial.
Will they eventually be charged to court?
And if they are charged, do they have rights to a ‘lawyer for goats’? Maybe they’ll be charged for being animals that were jejely going for a quiet evening ride.
Or they may all end up as endless pots of this…
Or this…
They may never grow up to be as flawless as this goat.
Ayodele Daniel Dada, the first Nigerian to ever graduate with a perfect CGPA in the country’s history has been granted a luxury apartment by Sujimoto construction.
Last week, we shared his story with you and Nigerians have been inspired by how he came out on top in spite of the several challenges students face in the country.
The 29 year old scored As in all the courses he offered in the University and participated in a lot of social activities while at it.
Upon learning of Daniel’s story and meeting with him, popular OAP Freeze spoke out and in his words:
“Ayodele Daniel Dada is the 1st Nigerian in 54 years to get a perfect CGPA. My question is, how do we encourage him, and most importantly channel the minds of the forthcoming generation into the realization that our intellectual ability is the driving force behind innovation, which in itself is our greatest asset? How do we dissuade the next generation from the teachings of many pastors, who ‘Barnum’them, by selling the idea of a ready made financial miracle, for 10% of their current income?”
And Daniel’s academic excellence didn’t make things automatically easy for him.
Freeze went on to inform Nigerians of his accommodation challenges also imploring successful Nigerian companies to help invest in Daniel’s intellectual potential.
In an awesome turn of events, Freeze personally reached out to the CEO of Sujimoto construction, who was responsible for providing a luxury apartment for Olajumoke.
Although controversial musician, Dencia was reported to have offered to help with Daniel’s rent, the enthusiastic CEO of Sujimoto, Sijibomi Ogundele, was quoted to have said: “Never again in the history of this country would the talent of a young man/lady be left without helping him attain his full potential”.
Daniel is an example of Nigerians who continue to shine through and excel in whatever field they may be. We hope his genius potential is tapped into for the development of the country.
I admire this lady, about 10 years ago, I did a PowerPoint with photos of who and where I wanted to be, car, house,…

He was so impressed with her gumption that he began searching for a way to get her real tickets to China!
Unable to afford the money for Seve’s ticket to China, Sam cajoled his friends into donating money and flyer miles for her trip.

He said,
“I wished I could buy you a ticket, but I can’t afford it, the good news is I have friends, many friends…
So, I have harassed all my friends, so much, I think I have lost half of them, but they are amazing people. I’m collecting frequent flyer miles and commitments.
If you were serious, I mean really serious, I have good news for you, get your passport ready because your dreams are about to come true.
Hope this Facebook post finds you. Get in touch.”
Seve did get in touch, and the rest they say is history.
Sam and other benefactors raised enough in cash and kind for Seve’s trip to China, including accommodation (4star), travel insurance and pocket money and a visit to the Kenyan embassy in Beijing to meet the Kenyan Ambassador to China (they’re working on making that happen).
