  • Global Citizen Holds Town Hall to Mark the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism

Global Citizen Holds Town Hall to Mark the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism

The town hall was held to mark the United Nation’s 16 days of activism, highlighting the urgency to combat gender-based violence and promote safety across the country. This is part of the ongoing Roadmap to 36 advocacy campaign urging all Nigerian states to protect women and girls by implementing the VAPP Act NOW.

(Nigeria, Lagos | Monday, December 5, 2022) Global Citizen, the international advocacy organisation, held a Town Hall event on Tuesday, November 29, at Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, marking the United Nations’ annual 16 Days of Activism, and in support of its ongoing Roadmap to 36 campaign. Co-hosted by media personality, and renowned journalist, Sandra Ezekwesili, and award-winning rapper, Jude ‘MI’ Abaga, the event featured speakers including Fuad Atanda-Lawal, Executive Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA; Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary, Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency; Pastor Laju Iren, Executive Producer, Laju Iren Films; Bridget Taremotimi, Head, General Division Services, WARIF; Uzoma Ayodeji, Gender/FGM Analyst, UNFPA; Ifeoma Monye, President, International Women Society Nigeria; Pastor Godman Akinlabi, Lead Pastor, The Elevation Church and Dr. Mustapha Bello, Professor of Islamic Studies, Lagos State University (LASU). The Town Hall highlighted the urgent need to combat Gender Based Violence across Nigeria, urging all states to immediately implement the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act of 2015 (VAPP Act).

The 16 Days of Activism event, attended by high-level community leaders, provided a much-needed platform to underline the current status quo on Nigeria’s gender equality and gender-based violence. The event also raised awareness of the resources available and structures for reporting sexual and gender-based violence, encouraging individuals to take advantage of these platforms for reporting such incidents through the LCDA and Lagos State.

The Town Hall provided the opportunity to engage in community-level discussions from local stakeholders on practical strategies to ensure the implementation of the VAPP Act, outlining best practise on how community leaders should handle incidents of sexual and gender-based violence reported to them and the creation and the importance of prevention and reporting structures in small community groups such as churches, mosques and markets.

“This year, we decided to take a grassroots approach. We think it is the most productive approach that we can take in terms of getting people to be aware of, and understand, the importance of protecting women and girls in the communities, and also making sure that people understand the reporting structures available and how to seek help around sexual violence conversations. Our call to action as an organisation to the stakeholders in the room was for them to further escalate and carry the conversation forward beyond the town hall conversation we had. We believe that more conversations, especially in their congregations or in their community town halls are crucial,” said Maimuna Maibe, Nigeria’s Country Director at Global Citizen.

The 16 Days of Activism activity forms part of Global Citizen’s ongoing Roadmap to 36 advocacy campaign work leveraging resources to protect women and girls by mobilising stakeholder engagement to scale up interventions and drive impact in dismantling negative social norms through funding, innovative multi-stakeholder coordination, along with grassroots engagement, with the aim to drive policy changes and resource the implementation of the VAPP Act.

The Roadmap to 36 campaign aims to provide practical actions that communities and the local government can utilise to ensure the effective prevention and reporting of gender-based violence at their local level, together with engaging the public about gender-based violence and advocating for action on the full implementation of the VAPP Act (domesticated in Lagos as Protection Against Domestic Violence Law 2015, Criminals Law of Lagos State, 2015).

Gender-based violence in Nigeria is on the increase as a result of the pandemic and needs to be eliminated in the mission to achieve the UN’s Global Goals and end extreme poverty and its systemic causes by 2030. Violence against women has been described by the United Nations as a “shadow pandemic” — with all types of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly domestic violence, intensifying amid COVID-19. In Nigeria, according to the National Gender-Based Violence dashboard of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, of the 10,000+ cases reported so far, only 33 convictions have been secured. The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) also reports that nearly 30% of girls in Nigeria have experienced physical violence by the age of 15, with lockdowns in major cities across the country resulting in an increase in violence against women and girls in Nigeria, as globally.

In concluding activities for the 2022 16 Days of Activism, the Global Citizen Nigeria team also participated in the annual WARIF walk against gender-based violence for the second year in a row. The team joined hundreds of Nigerians on a 2km march in Lagos to raise awareness and call for urgent action to protect and empower women and girls across Nigeria.

Global Citizen, with the support from the Ford Foundation, is leading public campaigns and advocacy efforts to encourage global citizens to take action and lend their support calling for strengthening gender-based violence laws in West Africa, for the adoption of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill (VAPP) and holding the national and local governments accountable for full implementation and resourcing of the bill.

  • 3 Free Logo Creation Tools That Every Business Should Know

3 Free Logo Creation Tools That Every Business Should Know

A good logo is an essential part of building any brand. Research shows that logos are the most recognizable brand identifier, and most consumers consider them works of art. A company’s visual identity can be a vital part of its success – think of brands like Apple and Coca-Cola, whose logos are known worldwide.

Creating a logo is one of the most critical steps toward establishing a solid visual identity. Many tools allow you to do it yourself without hiring a graphic designer. Some of them are even free to use. If you want to develop a professional-looking logo quickly and cheaply, these are the tools you should know.

Wix – DIY Logo Design Tool

Aside from being a website builder, Wix also offers a free and fantastic logo design tool. After you answer a few questions about your business and goals, it automatically generates a logo for your brand. You can regenerate it as many times as you want.

Once confirm a design, you can customize it to your liking. You can change the colors and fonts and move the different parts of the image around. If you have an eye for design and a bit of time, you can come up with something unique.

You can download the logo as a PNG file for free. It’s a small file, so it’ll only work for specific purposes. You’ll have to pay if you want the full-size image and all its variants.

    Looka – AI Logo Generator

If you want a professional-quality logo for your business as quickly as possible, Looka is a solid option. This tool uses AI to generate logos that look like they were designed by hand. You have to answer a few basic questions and click Generate.

The downside of Looka’s logos is that they could be more customizable. You can change a few settings to adjust the size and layout, but only within certain limits. This might seem like a problem for people who want creative control. But it also streamlines the process, so anyone can create a well-designed logo with little room for error.

Looka is free to use, and you can download a PNG version of your logo without paying anything. If you want to print it or get it in other formats, you’ll have to upgrade to the premium version of the tool.

Squarespace – Super Simple Logo Maker

Squarespace is another well-known website builder that offers its logo design tool. It’s straightforward to use; you must input your company name and tagline and arrange your preferred icons.

Unlike the tools above, this one doesn’t automatically generate a ready-to-use logo – but it does allow you to personalize your project with drag-and-drop functionality. It doesn’t offer the same level of customization as Wix, and it’s not as hands-off as Looka. The logos aren’t professional-looking, but they get the job done.

Squarespace is free. You need a Squarespace account to download your logo as a PNG file. You can also get it in various sizes and colors. If you’re looking for a fundamental logo that you won’t have to pay a dime for, Squarespace delivers.

Should You Pay For A Logo?

The tools above will allow you to create a free, functional logo. In the first two cases, you’ll have to pay to get the complete package – but you can try them out and see if you like the results. So is it ever worth paying someone else to design your logo?

The short answer is yes. Investing more money in a truly professional logo makes sense. To ensure that your logo is the best, an experienced graphic designer is the best option.

Logo design can cost anywhere from five dollars to several thousand. Consider how much you’re willing to spend before seeking out a professional. And if you want to get your logo out there as fast as possible, doing it yourself is always the first option.

    Final Thoughts

It’s possible to design a logo for your business for free. There will always be limitations, but if you’re starting a new business or revamping your brand identity, it can be good to give the tools above a try before outsourcing your logo design to an expert.

He concluded by saying that youth empowerment had become increasingly essential with the heightened unemployment rate declared by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics at over 33%.

Nike Bajomo, Executive Director, Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers also corroborated Olumide. She said, “The primary goal of the FUZE Talent hunt is to create a platform for Nigeria’s talented youth to engage and learn from other youths while also gaining access to funds and best-in-class mentoring to support actualisation of their dreams”.

Nike enjoined young Nigerians to participate in the event, stating that the audition application is free, and the public would be relied upon to vote their preferred candidate who would be showcased at the grand finale in December 2022.

“FUZE is open to all Nigerians between the ages18 and 35 years. To participate, you can simply download the Stanbic IBTC Events App on either the android or iOS store, register and upload an audition video,” she said.

  • “If Bolt Food Were a Person, I Would Give Them a Huge Hug” – CEO Lasgidi Sharwama and Burger

“If Bolt Food Were a Person, I Would Give Them a Huge Hug” – CEO Lasgidi Sharwama and Burger

Despite an unexpected entry into the food industry, Naomi Alfred of Lasgidi Sharwama and Burger has proven she has what it takes to run a thriving food business in Nigeria. In the bustling metropolis of Lagos, she has wowed customers with delicious tastes and exceptional service delivery, for which she shares her gratitude to Bolt Food.

As one of the top vendors on the Bolt Food platform, she has gained access to its innovation and technology expertise, ensuring that partner restaurants benefit from its loyal customer base. In this chat with Naomi, she speaks on running Lasgidi Shawarma and Burger and her experience as a vendor on the Bolt Food platform.

Kindly introduce yourself and your food business.

My name is Naomi Alfred, and I own Lasgidi Shawarma and Burger, a Lagos-based food business. Four years since we began, it has sometimes been a challenge. We have had great and hard times, but it’s been a good experience.

What motivated you to go into the food industry?

If anyone had told me that I would end up as a food vendor, I would have claimed that to be a colossal lie. It was an opportunity that I coincidentally fell in love with. Initially, I had a different business that I was operating, but this food business came as an opportunity.

I had a friend who was in this industry but wanted to get rid of her restaurant as it wasn’t doing too well. She told me about it, and I immediately declined,, but after a week, she reached out to me again and talked about how I had a good following on social media. I sat on this for another week before I decided to give it a try. I bought the business over from her, paid the rent and other expenses, and employed someone to work with me. Before starting the business, I had never even had shawarma before in my life, so I went on YouTube and made some for my friends. After a bit of back and forth, getting all the ingredients right and more research, we could go live. We began with a basic menu, but now, the business has outgrown me. My whole menu has expanded beyond shawarma and burgers into something else, and I feel it will keep growing.

Please give us an idea of your menu.

We majorly focus on Nigerian fast food. Basically, meals that do not take up to 30 minutes to prepare. So we’re talking about yam fries, potato fries, chicken wings, noodles, pasta, etc. That’s our focus for now, but the spirit is leading me to expand even more significantly. Imagine a girl who never thought she would have a restaurant or sell food is now thinking of attending culinary school next year. That’s in my plans for 2023!

You are one of the top vendors on the Bolt Food app. How did you learn about the platform, and what inspired your decision to register your business?

When I started my business, I felt I was doing so well that so many people should be reaching out to me. So I reached out to a food delivery platform that said they would register me. They were a big deal at that time. They were the only online food platform in Nigeria then. But they never continued with me even though I reached out to them multiple times.

Bolt Food reached out to us when they were just about to launch, and I jumped at the opportunity as I was looking for an online platform to partner with. Before I continue, no platform that came before or after Bolt Food can top them. After partnering with Bolt Food, we have partnered with other food delivery platforms, but the difference is staggering. I feel like once you’ve used Bolt Food, nothing else will appeal to you. While their marketing may not be as strong as other platforms, their service is top-class. So, any person thinking of establishing a food business should consider joining an online platform should go to Bolt Food; they are worth the hype!

What has been your experience since you joined the Bolt Food platform, and how has it impacted your operations?

Earnings have been great; I’m not even going to lie. would give them a huge hug if Bolt Food was a person if Bolt Food was a person. Their service has just been outstanding and seamless. There is no back and forth. They send the order, we prepare it, and then there’s a rider to pick up the order. Sometimes they may not have a rider at that moment which is not their fault as they outsource riders, but a rider will eventually come. The process has been seamless, and the money has been sweet.

Every Monday morning, the weekly deposits come in without us having to call. If it doesn’t come that Monday for some reason, it will be available the next week with your entire proceeds. I’ve never had any issues with Bolt Food. Other platforms should go and train with Bolt Food. I’m on all these other platforms,, which is why I can bluntly give my first-hand experience. More than that, I sometimes order through the app so I can get the experience from the customer side, and it’s the same thing. It’s such a seamless process. I don’t know how they figured it out, but they did.

As a food vendor in Nigeria, what are the biggest challenges or difficulties in the industry?

In the industry, the number one challenge is market prices. Market prices affect the cost of production, and customers want prices to stay the same. So we try to find a balance and compromise with customers. When we can’t increase the price, we may have to reduce the quantity and vice-versa; that’s just market prices. That’s the major problem with the Nigerian economy. I bought ketchup for N24,000 in September,, and when I tried to restock at the end of October, it was N44,000. So there goes my entire margin. The second challenge is logistics which is a whole issue that gives me a headache. We have riders we work with on our own, but it’s a pain to deal with. Those are our two significant challenges: market pricing and logistics.

What advice would you give to fellow and aspiring restaurateurs looking to join the Nigerian market?

Bolt Food is the way to go as your food delivery platform. Another thing they need to know is that there would be competition. Even when they see others selling for less, they shouldn’t try to compete by force as long the quality is 100%. Sometimes when I see how much people are selling for, I wonder how they are even making a profit. Some of them even begin reducing the quality of their food to be the lowest-priced vendor, which makes no sense. That’s why I always say, don’t look at other people’s prices. Make your products the best you can and charge according to what it is worth.

  • AS FIFA World Cup Starts, Budweiser and Naija Football Fans Spark a Conversation

AS FIFA World Cup Starts, Budweiser and Naija Football Fans Spark a Conversation

One of the greatest sporting tournaments, the FIFA World Cup, kicked off on the 20th of November with the attendant spectacle and excitement globally. The frenzy has led football fans in Nigeria to express mixed feelings as Nigeria is not playing in this world cup.

Budweiser, a brand from the stables of International Breweries, a proud member of the biggest beer company in the world with over 500 beer brands, Anheuser Busch, is heavily invested in global football.

The official beer sponsor of the FIFA World Cup and the English Premier League sparked up the conversation to seek Nigerians’ opinions and ideas that can ensure Nigeria is in the next World Cup to continually make the nation proud as Nigerians are known for their love for football.

Speaking on the topic, Marketing Director, International Breweries Plc, Tolulope Adedeji, explained Budweiser is cognisant of the love Nigerians have for football and how many cannot wait to see the nation back on the global pitch. This is why we have taken the initiative to kick off the conversation and are willing to partner to bring great ideas to return Nigeria to the global pitch.

In her words, “We partnered with Nigerian football legend Daniel “The Bull” Amokachi to drive the conversation so Nigerians can share their thoughts on what they believe should be done to make sure the country is represented in the next World Cup.” Consumers are encouraged to join the conversation on social media using the #NaijaNextWorldCup #Budweiser . However, we are not just going to talk about it, we are willing to partner to bring some of these ideas to reality working with the relevant local bodies and our global partner, FIFA.

Football fans can air their opinions and contribute to the conversation aiming to trigger a robust discourse and collation of ideas while giving Nigerians a platform to express themselves.

Fans will also share their ideas and feedback on social media using the hashtag #NaijaNextWorldCup #Budweiser

According to the Marketing Manager, Budweiser, Olajumoke Okikiolu, “We urge football fans to head to Twitter or @Budweisernigeria to share suggestions on what can be done to make sure Nigeria makes it to the next world cup using the hashtag. Please, tag us too so we can engage.”

Okikiolu assured that fans’ opinions will be heard and action taken.

  • Who Is Your Plug?

    Who Is Your Plug?

We once had a guy Ade in our group chat. Ade was everyone’s guy. Not because he organised the best parties – on the contrary, we didn’t see much of him. Ade was, however, very active online.

What endeared everyone to Ade was that he seemed to have a guy for every single thing. All you had to do was ask. For example, if you needed a guy to fix your TV, Ade would know someone. If you need a plumber to come at short notice, call Ade, and the next day by 10 am, you have a man dressed in overalls knocking at your door.

The best thing about Ade’s referrals? They were usually cheaper than the regulars. As long as they were Ade’s guys, you could get a discount. Indeed, Ade was an invaluable member of the community. We all called him Ade the Plug, and he indeed lived up to the name. Ade was your plug for virtually anything.

We enjoyed Ade the most during Black Friday weekends. Trust Ade to know the shops to get the best discounts and largest sales. We all waited for his message on the group with a link to a shop offering mouth-watering discounts. We could equally count on him for mega deals on Cyber Mondays. He was the true plug!

One day, Ade informed us he was leaving the country for his studies. We were all sad. Many of us did not know him personally, but we knew that with him far away, we might not have access to his resourcefulness. Worse still, we were just days away from Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

But Ade, being the ever-resourceful guy as always, was definitely not leaving us stranded. He had a plan to keep us plugged in, even in his absence. He introduced us to ALAT and told us ALAT could be our plug for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and beyond!

With ALAT, we’re being promised wider access to vendors, deals, discounts, and awoofs that Ade could not even match. This is the best news to come. It’s a no-brainer! ALAT has instantly become our plug! Eagerly, we await the Live Event that takes place every Friday on the ALAT Instagram page. We are certain to meet new vendors with discounts and amazing Black Friday deals.

On ALAT, anyone, yes, anyone can enjoy discounts on any item and product! You never have to pay full price with ALAT Rewards. All you have to do is just shop.

With ALAT as our plug, Black Friday is in the bag already. You, too, could make ALAT your plug! How?

You can start by following ALAT on all social media platforms and join in on the Instagram Live Sessions every Friday to get the best deals from various vendors, thanks to ALAT, our plug! An impressive lineup of vendors are on standby to give you deals you won’t get anywhere else.

What else? By signing up on ALAT, you too could also enjoy the deals and discounts we have been enjoying, thanks to ALAT Rewards. Simply head to Deals and Discounts and scroll through the deals that are already on display. Easily pay with your ALAT card once you find what you prefer – of course, you would find what you love. ALAT rewards would definitely have it all.

Ready to start enjoying discounts? You can start here.

Who is your plug? ALAT is definitely the Plug of Plugs!

    • Users can now also buy airtime and data with the main telecommunication service providers (Airtel, MTN, Globacom, 9mobile) for themselves or for others.
    • But that’s not the only good news.
    • This Black Friday, Busha is offering 10% cashback on vouchers to a maximum of N10,000 per voucher purchase. That means users get N10,000 off a N100,000 Spar voucher, for example.

Busha launched in 2019 with a mission to onboard millions of Africans into the booming crypto economy, enabling further financial opportunities and diversity.

The company raised seed funding of $4.2 million in 2021, which will help it continue its mission of onboarding more Africans into the crypto economy. This is an important step in increasing financial inclusion and opportunity for millions of people across Africa. This latest feature release comes just after the company’s recent launch of Busha Yield, which allows you to get up to 7.5% annual percentage yield on their investment in dollar stablecoins, such as USDC.

But this is just the beginning in a line of relatable features that Busha plans to unveil.

  • Z! Fest: We Need A Party!

Z! Fest: We Need A Party!

People and friends of Zikoko, sources are saying we need a party.

But not just any party — we need a Z! Fest party.

We’re back again with your favourite festival by Zikoko! And this year, the theme is Class of 2022. What’s that? Let’s get into it.

We spent about a month thinking through reasons to have a party this year. We did a thing in 2021 and the audience loved it. Then we threw the hottest party just for women in May. It made sense for us to bring out the party guns one more time.

From Asake dropping hits, like his housing status is at risk, to the naira falling more times than our national grid, we realised, we need a party. Who’s “we” this time? All of us — those who hit some hard milestones this year and even those who were just there — we have to end the year with a bang — party — Z! Fest.

What makes a Z! Fest Party

This year, Z! Fest is highlighting music, games, food and drinks — everything that made 2022 worthwhile.

Our music lineup features people you likely ran into on a playlist this 2022 or you’re bound to jam in the new year. We’ve got Ayra Starr, Yinka Bernie, Dwin the Stoic, YKB and other artists showcasing the best of their genres this 2022.

If you’ve been to a Zikoko party, you also know we’re all about games and having the most fun. I’m proud to tell you, we’re coming clutch again this time. There’ll be board games, life-sized games, games curated around Zikoko content (relationships, money, memes…) and our classic cup pong.

A highlight is our dance studio. If you want a dance competition with your friends while listening to music only you can hear, come through. You’ll find silent disco, waist whining and karaoke.

And if you thought that was all the dancing there was, you’d be wrong because we’ve locked down the best DJs, which we’ll unveil soon.

And finally, it’s not a festival without some signs of festivity. We’ve got body painters, tattoo artists and jugglers. We’re still unsure about fire-breathers. Should we be playing with fire in Lagos? Let us know.

At this point, all I can say is, we take our fun and partying seriously. You should come experience it.

    Date is November 26th, 2022

    Time is 3 p.m.

You see that date? Salary earners, no excuse not to make this. Non-salary earners, come unwind on the bank of salary-earning family and friends. Everyone deserves, and everyone will get, this party.

Pro tip: Look out for corners where we bring Zikoko to you.

  • CANDO! Nigeria Hosts Its Second Paint, Sip, and Plant Event

CANDO! Nigeria Hosts Its Second Paint, Sip, and Plant Event

We can all agree that the choices we make today have a significant impact on the future of our planet – Earth. We need to start choosing what’s good over what we think is cool if we want the things we love to last forever. Indeed, this is the essence of CANDO!

To spread the word about sustainability and educate its community, CANDO! Nigeria, the consumer-facing brand of NAMPAK BEVCAN (Africa’s largest producer of cans), recently hosted the 2nd edition of its Paint, Sip and Plant event with the theme – Make It Forever.

The pilot edition which was held earlier in April, in commemoration of World Earth Day, was a huge success and it’s no surprise that this was even bigger and better.

In attendance were the MD Nampak Bevcan Nigeria, Andrew Loggie,  Sales Account Managers, Nampak Bevcan Nigeria, Mr. Ikemefuna Chidi and Mr. Charles Emelogu, General Manager, Lagos State Parks and Gardens (LASPARK),  Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, MD Yellow Brick Road Ltd, Mr. Olumide Kaliko Olowole, Multidisciplinary Artist, Claire Idera-Nnani, Visual Artist, Haneefah Adam, alongside other environmental enthusiasts.

In a similar manner to the first edition, attendees drank from, painted in, and planted in cans. There were also fun games and activities and an insightful potting session by Plant Influencer, Ebuka Okonkwo (Plant Boy).

Attendees were further encouraged to make a conscious effort to care for the earth by cultivating environmentally friendly habits such as recycling and using cans.

    Why Choose Cans?

It’s simple. Aluminum cans are easily recycled. This means they have a lower carbon footprint and are less harmful to aquatic life. You too can make the things you love last forever – Be a Pioneer, Choose Cans.

  • #Safe to Surf: Young People Speak to Education as a Vaccine on Their Experiences Using Online Spaces

#Safe to Surf: Young People Speak to Education as a Vaccine on Their Experiences Using Online Spaces

Education as a Vaccine asked young people to share their experience on using the online platforms and if they have experienced any form of online gender based violence. Here are some responses:

    Mai Lap, 25 years

It started on Twitter and then moved to Facebook and Instagram. The tweet I made was:

I don’t think seeking permission from one’s husband before going out makes any sense. Informing your spouse that you’re going out should be enough, of course with information about the place and time and with whom, for safety reasons. If there’s a reason your partner doesn’t want you to go to a certain place after informing them, y’all can talk about it and come to a reasonable decision.”

Minutes after this, my Twitter mentions blew up with people telling me that I was being sacrilegious because Islam says as women, we have to seek permission from our husbands before going anywhere at all. I was called names like Kaafir (an unbeliever), and some people messaged me directly, telling me that I am teaching young MUSLIM girls how to be disrespectful to their husbands and that my father raised me as a whore. This went on for almost two days. Some people made screenshots and posted my Tweets on Instagram and Facebook.

My parents saw this and were extremely scared for me as some people were making violent threats in their comments. They even promised to pay anyone who would provide them with my personal information. At first, I felt defeated, and I absolutely stopped tweeting or sharing my opinion for a while. However, I decided that I would not let the trolls de-platform me. This made me have a very serious anxiety attack because of the violent threats I received and because my parents were extremely worried about my safety.

    Nabila, 21 years

I spoke against gender-based violence and also against the killing of Deborah who was accused of blasphemy and burnt to death. I tweeted to condemn the act, and  I immediately received so many reactions from a lot of youths (Arewa twitter extension) with death threats, insults, vile comments etc. I became very scared and extremely anxious about what was going to happen to me afterwards. This made me leave Twitter and some social media platforms for a while.

    Tobi, 25 years

I participated in a protest to react to the rejection of the 5 gender bills in the Nigerian constitution. I disrupted the politician hijacking the protest, and the video went viral on social media. I received backlash and insults on Twitter. I was also called a performative activist, and unknown callers kept reaching me asking ‘’who sent me’’. At first, I was scared and anxious. I had panic attacks and went off social media for a while.

    Sarf, 22 years

It began when I started writing erotic flash stories on a literary blog that I curated. The conversations were on women prioritizing their sexual pleasure, taking their sexual and health issues serious, protecting and sharing resources for Queer protesters and online protesters during EndSARS as well as sharing videos on safety tips for using abortion pills. I got insulted, slut shamed for posting sexual content by my faculty mates and other university students who came across my content. I have also had people send my content- blog posts, videos, and pictures on sexual pleasure, reproductive health, and sex product reviews to people who know me offline, saying I am doing prostitution online. I felt enraged, shocked, disgusted, and unsafe. It spiked my anxiety, and ever since then, I am very careful about who follows my accounts. I block insensitive comments. I am careful with how I share my personal information.

    Anita, 26 years

There was a discussion on Twitter about how fathers were not living up to their responsibilities within the home, and I had commented on how the patriarchal structures give men that leverage to flout their responsibilities without repercussions. The men in that conversation immediately  started insulting me, and my father and I was tagged  ‘’the child of an irresponsible man.’’ At that moment, I retaliated and said harsh things out of anger. I eventually deleted my tweet and I did not contribute to any controversial conversations for a long time because I was scared and did not want to be in that situation again. I also deleted my personal photograph from Twitter.

    Usman, 30 years

I posted my picture and a write-up on social media, calling on the National Assembly to rescind the rejection of the 5 gender bills. I was at the protest with Nigerian women asking for the same and took my advocacy online. A friend of mine saw the picture and replied saying “so you are in support of women ruling over men and having a say in decision-making positions? He said is it not enough that they are now heading homes or having a voice in their homes? They now want to take over the public”. I was disappointed that men like this exist, and my friend is one of them, even though I spoke at length to convince him.

    Idoko, 25 years

During World AIDS day in December 2020, I made a post with pictures I took during the day’s procession. The post was to highlight challenges that young people still face despite numerous HIV interventions in the state, and I made a call to action and recommendations to relevant stakeholders. Despite receiving positive feedback in the comment sections, one of my old schoolmates commented and I quote “HIV Boy”. I didn’t know for sure what he meant by that but I felt really bad, and because we haven’t been talking for a while, I didn’t want to confront him, so I had to delete the comment.

    Awawu, 30 years

It was during the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in 2020 and I made a post on Facebook in commemoration of the day calling for an end to the barbaric practice. Somebody commented saying “You are selfish for saying that because men are circumcised for women’s sexual pleasure, so women should do the same for men because men enjoy sex better with women who have experience cutting”. I went on to explain the negative impact of FGM. However, another person started cursing him and a  thread of both commenters insulting themselves ensued. I was embarrassed by the situation.

    Dooshima, 21 years

I had a boyfriend when I was in 200 level in the university. While we were dating, I was so free and comfortable around him that I allowed him to take pictures of me. unknown to me, he took naked pictures of me when I was asleep and sometimes when I was dressing up. We broke up, and after so much persuasion from him to get back together which I refused, I started receiving threats from him with the statement  ‘’watch and see”. Few days later, he posted my nude pictures on our school faculty WhatsApp group and students started posting on their statuses. I felt like dying.

    Uchechukwu, 21 years

My nude pictures were uploaded by my boyfriend on my departmental Whatsapp group because I left the toxic relationship. He was blackmailing me with the pictures and was demanding for money, and when I said no, it became a very big disaster. When this happened, death became  an option for me because I couldn’t live with the shame.
