    • A total of 15,158 individuals, ranging in age from 18 to 65, from 15 countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, including 1000 from Nigeria participated in a first-of-its-kind survey commissioned by Consensys and conducted by the international online research data and analytics technology group YouGov. The survey’s purpose was to gather opinions and measure behaviors on web3, crypto, and the current Internet.
    • Among Nigerian survey respondents, 87% believe they should own what they make online, 90% believe they add value to the internet, but only 48% believe they are adequately compensated for that value.
    • In alignment with these global trends, Consensys is launching an evolved brand with a core message that redefines the Builder as inclusive of everyone and encourages new perspectives on how the web3 paradigm shift can empower all of us.

    Lagos, Nigeria, June 27th, 2023 — Today, leading web3 software technology company, Consensys, unveils a first-of-its-kind global opinion survey on web3 and crypto, conducted online by international online research data and analytics technology group, YouGov. The survey polled a representative sample of 15,158 people aged 18-65 between April 26th and May 18th, 2023 in 15 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, including 1000 from Nigeria. The results offer captivating and unique insights into the Nigerians overall understanding and views of the web3 and crypto ecosystem, beyond other surveys which just consider people’s perceptions around investing in crypto assets. The survey explores topics such as digital ownership, the future of money, data privacy, and the recent news cycle. Results reveal that Nigerians, alongside global counterparts, are motivated to build and believe they are making valuable contributions online. This evolution indicates a shift in user behavior toward active participation, empowerment, and broader community ownership, characterized by web3.

    Fieldwork was conducted in 15 countries: Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea, The Philippines, UK, the US, and Vietnam. 

    From “Users” to “Builders”: A Paradigm Shift

    The survey results present a compelling picture characterized by widespread awareness of crypto and a strong desire for ownership, coupled with confidence in a crypto-led future for Nigeria:

    • Overwhelming crypto awareness: 99% of Nigerian respondents demonstrated awareness of crypto; and over 70% of Nigerian respondents accurately guessed what a blockchain is, the highest in all the countries surveyed.
    • Firm beliefs in crypto’s future: When asked about the main concepts associated with crypto, most of the Nigerian respondents are familiar with the industry expressed beliefs in its potential as the future of money (58%) and the future of digital ownership (48%), surpassing associations with speculation (9%) or scams (6%); 
    • A desire for more ownership: 90% of Nigerian respondents believe they add value to the internet, while a notable 87% believe they should own the things that they make on the internet. Only 48% of Nigerian respondents believe they are adequately compensated for the value and creativity they add to the internet;
    • Concerns around data privacy: 96% of Nigerian respondents said that data privacy is important to them, 88% believe that they should have a share of the profit a company makes from their data, and 95% would like to have more control over their identity on the Internet.

    The results of the survey reveal that globally, we are currently witnessing increasingly mainstream attitudes toward an internet that provides more control over the data we share online, and more equitably shares profits with creators. In this new world, web3 and crypto enable truly scalable peer-to-peer coordination. The Nigerian engaging with crypto and web3, whether developing software, staking crypto-assets, or creating or purchasing an Non-Fungible Token (NFT), is not simply a  ‘user’, but rather contributing and building the ecosystem, signaling the “new age of the builder”. In web3, builders have agency and ownership and are rewarded for their contributions to the internet. 

    Consensys sees this pivot from “user” to “builder,” as fundamental to its purpose, and is focused on supporting a revitalized sense of community and collaboration between builders. In line with this shift in perspective, Consensys reveals its evolved brand identity which encourages people to see themselves and the world differently. Consensys reframes “builder” to be more inclusive artists, community creators, and collectors, and seeks to celebrate everyone participating in web3 as a builder.     Web3 Awareness: How Nigerians Fare with the Rest of the World

    The survey conducted across different regions of the world also highlights interesting contrasts between Nigeria and the rest of the world on various Web3 and crypto-related topics:

    • Motivations to own crypto: Nigeria (65%) and Argentina (56%) show the highest motivation to own cryptocurrencies as a means to store value, given the instability of their local currencies; 
    • Beliefs that they add value to the internet: 67% of respondents in Nigeria strongly believe they add value to the internet, while only 5% of respondents in Japan do; 
    • NFT ownership: Respondents in Nigeria, South Africa and Vietnam are the most familiar with the concept of an NFT. Among respondents familiar with the concept of NFTs, 76% of respondents in the UK have never owned an NFT, compared to only 24% of respondents in Vietnam; 
    • Future of Money: 58% of Nigerians, 50% of South Africans, and 44% of Mexicans say the future of money is one of the main concepts they associate with cryptocurrencies, while only 15% of Brits and 17% of Germans said the same;

    Nigerians prove to be active builders, embracing Web3 technologies and the space and agency it affords them to thrive in ways that were not possible before, and helping them build the future they want for themselves.

    Zikoko is now accepting submissions from Nigerian creators worldwide!

    We are excited to announce that we’re now accepting submissions from Nigerian creators located anywhere in the world. We’re looking for stories that explore themes such as migration, food, culture, music, friendships, and more. These stories can be based on your personal experiences, or distinct stories that capture the essence of what it means to be Nigerian.

    We’re not looking for your everyday article. We’re looking for visual stories that pack a punch. They dive into specific themes and explore that entire universe. Our audience should feel things and know things they wouldn’t have ordinarily known.

    At Zikoko, we are passionate about sharing diverse perspectives and unique stories with our audience. By submitting your work, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with our readers and show them a side of life they may not have experienced before.

    These are the formats we’re interested in:

    • Photojournalism: we want images from Nigerians across the world that tell a story.
    • Visual stories: these stories have strong visual elements, like images, and illustrations. They can [should] feel interactive and create a sensory experience.
    • Videos: these can be documentary-styled, human interest focused, etc. The important thing is that they tell a strong story.
    • A series of limited stories: These are pockets of stories that share a specific theme. They can take any of the formats listed above.

    For this submissions period, we’re exploring the question: how does moving countries affect Nigerians through food, loneliness, community and language?

    In the last few years, we’ve seen a new wave of migration hit Nigerians. Through Abroad Life, we covered some of these stories, but now, we’re interested in the cultural shift that happens when a person migrates.

    We’ve witnessed several brain drains throughout our collective history as Nigerians, and we’ve heard the recurring stories that show the impact of leaving: the classic tale of a bank manager who had two houses and left Nigeria to wait tables at McDonald’s and clean toilets because they needed a better life. Or stories around access to innovation, better education and more opportunities. We’ve even heard stories about regret. People who regretted leaving. The people who miss Nigerian food. We’ve heard it all.

    We’re looking for a different set of stories.

    With social media and the internet, what does this new age of migration bring to the table? What does it mean to leave family behind? Are there any patterns we’ve seen in previous peak periods of migrations that we can see now? How are people building and maintaining community? How are people navigating food? We want to explore why and how people are moving.

    We’ve taken four sections that are core to humanity: food, loneliness, community, language, and want our contributors to apply them to the stories they produce. But we don’t want you to limit yourself to these. Think creatively. Step outside the box.

    Submissions Guideline

    • Fill out this form to submit your pitch. We do not accept complete drafts. We want to work with you in shaping the idea. We encourage you to be as detailed as possible in the pitch form.
    • Submissions close at 11:59 pm WAT on June 24, 2023. If you’re interested in pitching a story, we encourage you to do this as soon as possible, instead of waiting until the last minute.
    • Once you submit your form, you can expect to hear from us within three weeks.
    • We will publish at least six stories from July to November. If you’re submitting a pitch for a series, you should aim for at least two stories, but no more than four stories. These will be published in a specified month within the July to November timeline. We will reach out to you with the specific month should your pitch be accepted.
    • If your pitch is accepted, you’ll be expected to work on your story within a two-week timeline, after which an editor will work with you to beat the story into shape.
    • For accepted video pitches, we will share detailed guidelines on the visual appearance of your work.
    • For articles, we have no set maximum length or minimum length, though most of our stories are less than 2000 words. This also applies to videos. We encourage you to share a pitch for a video idea that is less than three minutes. You might however submit a pitch for multiple videos in a series, which in total can be up to 12 minutes.
    • For articles, remember, we’re super keen on stories that use visuals: photography or animation. Please keep this in mind as you submit your pitch.

    A great event is characterised by the food, music, cliques, vibes and variety of outfits. These and lots more were what the just concluded HERtitude event was about. The ambience was vibrant, radiating excitement, fun and the I’m-about to-let-go-of-any-home-training-I-came-here-with energy.

    The event was packed with activities including a fashion show, twerking competition, speed friendship, sip and paint, candle making, massage sessions, board games and karaoke, awakening the adventurer in all the hot ladies present. The fashion show was top on our list of exciting activities as we saw budding models on the runway — you’d think it was Lagos Fashion Week. Amidst all of that fun, trust gomoney to do their thing — cheering the hot babes and dishing out gifts to winners at the end of the fashion show. 

    Then there was the speed friendship session; ladies were caught in action, exchanging numbers. Whoever said ladies are not super friendly to each other? Well, the hot babes at HERtitude 2023 were, and we are pretty sure every lady present made one hot friend!

    HERtitude by Zikoko was just perfect for the hot babes in Lagos to unwind, recharge and take care of themselves. It was also a cheerful reminder that self-love is important and ladies should prioritise their well-being. It was a day filled with unforgettable moments and fun times. The hot babes unleashed their inner warriors and found solace on the dance floor. They found new sisters and created memories — one that wouldn’t be forgotten in a hurry.

    What is that one surprising thing your fans might not know about you?

    That I am bilingual. I speak Spanish and Igbo even though I was born, bred and raised in Nigeria. More so, I am currently learning Mandarin. One more thing, I am obsessed with learning to the point where I do it unintentionally.

    When did you realise that making music was in your destiny and what is your WHY for pursuing this craft?

    Music for me wasn’t just a talent or an ability that I had. Not something that I was able to do, it was a life I wanted to live. A feeling that I wanted to express. Music is my shallow thoughts spoken loudly. It is my comfortable and confident space as a teenager. I knew it was my destiny from the first time I climbed on stage and held the microphone at seven years old. Something about being in charge of millions of people and being heard.

    My “why” is easy. Growing up antisocial, it has been hard to justify my feelings and emotions, and music was a safe haven for me, and I believe so many people are still seeking theirs. As a 16-year-old teenager, I want to be who they listen to when they seek peace.

    Which African songs or artists did you grow up listening to?

    Tiwa Savage, Davido, Burna Boy and Wande Coal.

    To someone who has never heard your music, how would you describe the sound, tone, and style?

    Afro, R&B, and a limitless sense of emotion.

    Any advice for someone afraid to follow their dreams?

    Deafen your ears to the crowd and begin. Nothing begins unless you just start.

The event was organised by Cadbury Nigeria Plc (a subsidiary of Mondelēz International) in partnership with Movie in the Park and Filmhouse Cinemas, in the city of Ibadan. The Ibadan edition is the first for this year as others will be organised in different cities across the country in the coming months.

    The experience at ‘Like A Child Again’ is a novel initiative to drive awareness for Cadbury Candies whilst offering consumers a unique experience filled with playful  excitement and nostalgic moments that enable them relive fun memories of their childhood through the movies shown at the event. 

    The free event welcomed hundreds of lovers of Cadbury Candies to an open candyland, with a captivating setup of balloons, lights and props.     Lead artist, Tumininu Ayobami Gbebire, was inspired by our colourful culture and rich landscape. She explains, “Nigeria’s culture is rich, yet underrepresented. Historical creative symbols like the Ife Bronze heads, Adire dye pits and Benin Ivory heads, all represent the labours of our hero’s past and are treasures which should be revered”.     Folktales are an integral part of African cultural heritage, passed down from generation to generation, carrying with them the wisdom, values, and beliefs of our ancestors. African folktales have been used to teach life skills, social etiquette, and moral lessons for centuries. However, the current scarcity of these tales raises the question, where have all the folktales gone?

    African folktales were once a popular form of entertainment and education. These tales were passed down from generation to generation and were used to teach life skills, social etiquette, and moral lessons for centuries. Some of the popular folktales included Anansi the Spider, The Lion and the Mouse, and The Tortoise and the Hare.

    The origin of these folktales can be traced back to the early days of various African tribes. The stories were usually told in the evening, around the fire, and were passed down orally from one generation to the next. The stories were considered sacred and were used to teach important life lessons, morals, and values.

    Despite the importance of these folktales, many of them have not been preserved. The lack of preservation can be attributed to several factors, including the influence of Western culture, the rise of modern entertainment, and the lack of interest in preserving traditional African culture.

    Similarly, the rise of modern entertainment, such as movies and television, has contributed to the decline of African folktales. Oddly, a lot of modern entertainment feature references to myths and folktales of various other cultures, but not African ones which appear to lack a platform.

    The lack of interest in preserving traditional African culture has also contributed to the scarcity of folktales. Many African governments have not prioritized the preservation of traditional culture, including the preservation of folktales. This has resulted in the loss of many important stories that would have otherwise been passed down to future generations.

    In Nigeria, we had tales by moonlight. A Television show which featured episodes based on Nigerian folktales. Tales by Moonlight no longer exists. Even worse, no effort has been made to preserve the old episodes so that future generations can watch and benefit from them.

    The scarcity of African folktales is a cause for concern. These tales are an essential part of African cultural heritage and should be preserved. It is essential that we take the necessary steps to preserve these tales and ensure that they are passed down to future generations.

A free, ticketed event, ‘Power Our Planet: Live in Paris’ will feature performances from Lenny Kravitz, Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Jon Batiste and special guests Ben Harper, FINNEAS, and Mosimann to drive commitments from world leaders and the private sector to confront the climate crisis head on. 

    Under the high patronage of Mr Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, ‘Power Our Planet: Live in Paris’ will rally global leaders attending the New Financial Pact Summit, chaired by President Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. The Power Our Planet campaign, which Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados co-chairs, is calling for a seismic shift in the way the world’s financial systems work to give the world’s poor and developing nations access to the financing they urgently need to quicken their transition to clean energy, strengthen their resilience against natural disasters, and address their most urgent needs. 

    Global Citizen’s Power Our Planet campaign is galvanizing millions of people around the world to take action, raise their voices and demand urgent changes from governments, Multilateral Development Banks, and major corporations, including 

    Keep Promises Already Made: Deliver the outstanding $16.7 billion of the committed $100 billion in climate financing for lower-income countries; transfer $100 billion in IMF Special Drawing Rights from wealthy countries to poor countries; increase foreign aid budgets; and enact global carbon emissions taxes. 

    Free Up Funding: Make up to $1 trillion in financing available to countries in need through policy reforms at the World Bank and other multilateral development banks; and include natural disaster and pandemic clauses in loans to poorer nations. 

    Transition to Clean Energy: Corporations should commit to joining the United Nations’ Race-to-Zero by setting science-based targets; publish time-bound action plans for climate transitions; and make transformative investments for a lower-carbon transition in emerging economies. 

    Increased access to financing would help bolster governments’ ability to resist climate change by, for example: helping 1.5 million farmers in Zambia withstand climate disasters like droughts and floods; protecting 1.8 million hectares of land in Ghana by 2030; ending deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon by 2030; and strengthening the resilience of national electric grids in island nations like Antigua and Barbuda to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. 

    ‘Power Our Planet: Live in Paris’ will pave the way for this urgent funding to be delivered throughout the year, including at the G20 summit in New Delhi, India in September; the Global Citizen Festival held during the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, USA in September; the IMF and World Bank meetings in October; and culminating at COP28 in Dubai, UAE in November. 

    “Our world needs urgent change. Outdated global financial systems are perpetuating the conditions that keep vulnerable countries and their citizens trapped in the cycle of extreme poverty,” said Hugh Evans, Co-founder and CEO, Global Citizen. “We congratulate Ajay Banga on his appointment as President of the World Bank, and there is an urgent and immediate opportunity for him to show leadership the world truly needs.”

    Applications for the 2023 OPPO Inspiration Challenge will start from May 8 to June 30, with three regional demo events set to take place in Bangkok, Boston and Shenzhen at early August. Finalists from each regional demo event will be invited to join the Inspiration Challenge Acceleration Camp and meet with OPPO executives and technical experts to revise their proposals before the global final demo event at the end of August.

    Global Timeline for 2023 OPPO Inspiration Challenge

    All the proposals for OPPO Inspiration Challenge this year will be evaluated based on the four criteria of Feasibility, Technological Innovation, Long-term Potential, and Social Values. A total of 15 qualified proposals from regional demo events will be selected as global finalists and top 5 winning proposals will be selected in the global final demo event, each being awarded a grant of USD $50,000 (approximately 350,000 RMB, tax included).

    Further partnership opportunities are open to the top 45 proposals worldwide – made up of the top 15 proposals in each regional challenge – including, but not limited to:

    • Productization and commercialization opportunities: an incubation fund totaling US$190,000 (approximately RMB 1.25 million, tax included), will be set up to co-develop solutions for implementation.
    • Strategic partnership and investment opportunities.
    • Opportunities to showcase at global technology events.

    Nigeria is the leading source of international students in Africa. More than 12,000 of her students are enrolled in the UK, and over 89 percent aspire to study abroad.

    But while this number keeps growing year after year, many can’t pursue their study abroad dreams because of restrictions on international transactions.

    Besides the restrictions, inflation is also ravaging the country’s economy. These put together, made business dealings challenging, including paying for services like school fees abroad.

On the platform, students can process their tuition, application, visa, and other fees in less than 10mins — in their local currency. They are not required to source or pay in foreign currency because Pay4Me handles that for them.

    Paul Sunday noted that the Pay4Me App is a one-stop solution for international students to process payments to foreign universities, colleges, and agencies. In his words:

    To use the Pay4Me App, students should go to the App store or Play Store, download the application, and sign up with their email addresses.

    Afterward, they can log in, select a payment option (like SEVIS, WES, or tuition), input payment instructions, and pay in their local currency. Alternatively, students can pay with a bank transfer or cryptocurrency. Pay4Me will process payment transactions in less than 10mins.

    Loan collection companies have been known to go to great lengths to find debtors out of concern that they will flee with their money. We thought it was true when we saw memes about alleged PalmPay officials harassing ‘debtors’ and disguising themselves to get a hold of them. But how true are these things really?

    It would be an understatement to say that the memes and skits gaining virality have been unhelpful for the brand. For a brand that came through for many of us during the cash crunch, I knew I had to do my own findings to separate reality from fake news.

    It’s not surprising that most people just laugh at the viral memes scattered on several social media pages. Some even go on to share it with others, but at some point, there were those who come away with the belief that these things are actually true. The virality of the content even makes it harder to ignore because, let’s face it, who among us hasn’t found themselves being late on a loan in a spot of sapa before?  But the thing is, it has really painted a false picture of PalmPay in the minds of people.

    Just recently, the company took to their social media pages to address the viral defamatory memes, stating clearly that the alleged PalmPay agents depicted are just skit makers and not affiliated with their company. They also called for whoever claims to have gone through such harassment by any of their officials to speak out; it remains to be seen if anyone will, because none has come for now.

    As someone who has sampled different loan apps (don’t ask me why I’m sampling loan apps because this country is hard), PalmPay is one of the best payment apps out there, offering seamless account creation and transfers while aggregating services from many different providers.  Millions of people like me have enjoyed the benefits of PalmPay services, including the overdraft service from Flexi.

    In my quest to know the truth, I dug deep and I can tell you from my findings that Flexi agents do not harass people or contact their family and friends to chase them for loan repayments. As a matter of fact, the financial company adheres strictly to data policies and has been audited and certified by the NDPR (Nigeria Data Protection Regulation).

    The Flexi team confirmed that they only contact three (3) numbers which users provide when signing up on the loan and as part of their agreement policies. It is not in accordance with their practices to share or publish user information, especially in the defamatory way we’ve heard some loan apps do in recent times.
