Do you want people to regard you with awe and put some “respeck” on your name? If you live in Nigeria, the following will be very useful in achieving your aim.

    1. Tell them you know Dangote one-on-one

Whether you’ve even seen the back of his head before or not, it doesn’t matter. The koko is how well you’re able to defend your claims.

    2. Choose violence once in a while

Have been choosing the “nice” path? Ah. If you want to earn yourself some respect, change it for people and choose violence every once in a while.

    3. Stay far away from drama

That includes not dragging people that didn’t do anything to you on Twitter, and telling Bisi you have work to do when she comes with office gossip. Tomorrow it’ll be your gist she’ll be spreading.

    4. Show them your birth certificate

Maybe people don’t respect you because of your small stature. You can fix that by showing them your birth certificate. Let them know you are not their mate, especially disrespectful Gen Zs.

  • You Need these 5 Helpful Things as an Online Shopper

Back in the day, literally all shopping was carried out offline. Now, you can even lie in bed and shop for groceries online. One less thing to stress about as you hustle for your daily 2k.

Your online shopping experience could even be made better with these following things:

    1. The wisdom of your forefathers

Shopping is addictive, and your cart is filled enough. Wisdom will prevent you from impulsively spending all the money you’ve saved for japaing on one handbag.

    2. Discounts, discounts, discounts

Shopping is much more fun when you are saving some coins, yes or yes? If your favourite shopping store doesn’t give discounts, fight them.

    3. A password even the Devil cannot guess

How long will you keep using 123456789 and your birthday in reverse as your password? It’s 2022, fix up before one hacker will access all your card details and wipe your account clean.

    4. The patience of a snail

Not every shiny, carefully photographed item on a e-store is the real deal. Patience will prove helpful in getting value for your money. Unless you want to keep regretting a hasty purchase till you clock ninety.

  • 7 Annoying Reasons Why You Probably Hate Shopping on International Stores

Shopping online, especially on international stores is a delightful and stress-free process, or is it? You must have experienced certain things that just make you frustrated and want to say, “Not again”, like the ones below:

Which can you relate to the most?

    1. Paying can be frustrating

It’s not as if you’re begging for the money oh. You have it, but to make payment becomes difficult. Either because your debit card keeps getting declined, the payment methods are not supported in Nigeria or one OTP wahala. Heavy sigh.

    2. Shipping fees cost more than the product

Imagine paying $25 as shipping fee for sunglasses that cost $4. How?? How much is transport fare to the market?

    3. Delivery takes forever

That’s how you’ll think every knock on your door or unknown number calling is a delivery person. Someone can even get pregnant and give birth during some waiting periods. If some of your orders even arrive in one piece, thank your star. Wahaleux.

    4. Confusion with currency conversion

Rushing to convert the prices on items before adding to cart is just tiring. Makes you wonder why there’s no universal currency.

    5. You cannot do “back to sender”

This one can make you want to grow wings and fly, because the return policies suck. Especially when you get those outrageous deliveries that look nothing like what you ordered online, a.k.a what you ordered vs. what you got.

    6. Nigeria not being on the radar

There is always that one international shopping site that doesn’t deliver to Nigeria. A whole Nigeria oh, it’s not their fault.

    7. Address wahala

There is always the scepticism about filling the address option. What if they come and kidnap you or worse, your package gets delivered to your enemy’s house? Which room number will you even write when the numbering on your street is not straightforward? Omo.

Before you put away your ATM card and say “Never again” to shopping on international stores, give Shop & Ship a try. It’s a global shipping service that delivers your online shopping from anywhere in the world right up to your doorstep.

Yup. To your door gan gan!

  • If You Can Relate With at Least 3 of These Things, “Friends With Benefits” Is Not for You

Being in a “friends with benefits” position is like being entangled with the slightly less chaotic younger sibling of a situationship; less than a committed relationship, but not more than a friendship. There are many factors to consider before engaging in this. The first is finding out if it’s a situation you can properly function in. The rest are way too many to state here so we’ve simplified it for you.

If you can relate with at least three of the following, then chances are you can’t successfully navigate the tricky water of a FWB.

    1. You don’t have friends

It’s called “friends” with benefits for a reason. As your antisocial behaviour has stunted your ability to make friends/maintain friendships,, which friendship will you introduce sexual benefits into it? Exactly. Just continue scrolling on Tiktok.

    2. You are already planning matching Pyjamas for Valentine’s Day

If you’re the kind of person who already starts mentally planning your life with someone (wedding, children, divorce, Shakespeare-style joint death etc) the second they so much as smile at you, you’re not cut out for this FWB life. Hang it up.

    3. Your jealousy knows no bounds

Jealousy is usually an anxious response to something you need to address. For example, if the thought of your FWB having genital meet & greets with other people makes you feel the rage of a thousand Hulks, you’re most likely in love with them, which means you have no business being in a FWB situation with them in the first place.

    4. You are big on PDA

Your friends with benefits partner will not whisper sweet nothings into your ear, hold your hand lovingly, or remove imaginary leaves from your hair. Know this, and know peace.

    5. You catch feelings like kilode

Literally everyone you’ve talked to being able to testify that you caught feelings for them faster than The Flash is a huge sign that the “no strings attached” principle of FWB will be an issue for you.

    6. You are demisexual

If you’re someone who craves a strong emotional connection with someone before you can bump genitals with them, run away from anyone who propositions you with a FWB arrangement. It won’t end well for you.

    7. You aren’t assertive

Saying yes to a FWB relationship only because it’s what your potential partner wants is a bad idea because you’ll be miserable all the time. This is why you should strongly assert yourself if a situation doesn’t serve you. Failure to do so will end with you eating breakfast in the future.

  • We Have Foolproof Steps to your 2022 New Year Resolutions

Here we go again! Welcome to the new year!

A fresh start as everyone looks forward to new opportunities, possibilities, milestones, achievements, and successes.Expectedly, there would be expectations, projections, plans, and well-intentioned resolutions laid down to achieve set goals for the year.

Before you roll your eyes at the mention of “new year resolutions”, or the widely proclaimed “New Year, New Me” mantra, it is critical to note that resolutions, albeit sometimes led by emotions and unrealistic goals, evolve from a genuine decision to get it right in the new year.

Resolutions are commonplace, as people indulge in retrospection and re-evaluation of some of their decisions with the resolute desire to lead a better life from the previous year. However, the question is how many people follow through to keeping the well written and laid-out plans?

According to the Discover Happy Habits blog, only 64% successfully keep to their new year resolution just one month after making them. There is no prize for guessing that the numbers thin out as the year unfolds. Clinical psychologists conclude that the major reason most resolutions fail is attributable to a lack of self-discipline and low tracking of progress evaluation.

Let us be honest, most of these resolutions are made at the spur of the moment without clarity or unrealistic measures. So, this year we thought to help with simple, realistic, and foolproof steps to ensure your resolutions are not the usual “wash, rinse and repeat”. The best way to plan is to ask; “what realistic and immediate changes do I want for my life”? Below are steps on how to plan your 2022 results-driven resolutions.

    What should I do now?

We believe that the best way to plan and achieve the desired goal is by taking immediate action. Planning should not only be approached from a futuristic point of view but from simple questions like “What do I do now? What can I change or adjust now?”.

Typically, resolutions focus on the achievements in a month, a quarter, half-year or end of the year, with less attention on the immediate steps. Sometimes, these changes and adjustments are the real deal in achieving your plans for the year.

Let’s make it clearer; imagine you have a mental note of the professional certifications you would like to acquire in three months, or the networking events you love to attend within the quarter, but you never actually note the professional certifications or create a reminder for the events at the instant, pin in at a visible spot or on your electronic devices, what would happen? Yes, you guessed right, there is a higher chance that you might forget them because these plans were never staring you in the face. If the plan is to get more certified, surf the internet now, register for the desired courses, pin the date on your calendar and start the countdown.

If yours is to spend more quality time with your family and kids, check your calendar to plan your leave, plan either a vacation or a staycation, check the newest recipes to prepare for your family, call that loved one as you plan a visit. In other words, do not postpone the actualization of your goals and take deliberate steps immediately.

What should I do by mid-year?

After taking immediate actions, the next step is what should you plan for the mid-year? What needs to be achieved by the year’s second quarter (April – June)?

Researchers and psychologists noted that people tend to get forgetful or complacent in pursuing their desired goals for the year by the second quarter. This mindset is caused by the growing activities, pressure and shifts or failure to meet already set targets.

However, the second quarter of the year is critical in achieving your midterm goals as one looks to steer the final half of the year on the right course. Whether your midterm goal is to save for the purchase of a car or house, plan for the summer trip with the family, acquire more skills and knowledge, do not wait till June to start the mid-year work appraisal, begin in April to check which activities need more focus to realign. Do not let the months slide away, engage yourself, do the things you might not have achieved in the first quarter and master the decisions you were able to achieve.

What should I do by the full year?

The full-year goals might sound so far off and might seem not to require immediate and deliberate planning. Darling, this year, don’t dull yourself, start planning now, so as not to get caught up in the tale of “Oh, it is the end of the year, already? What have I achieved this year?”, “How did the year go so fast”. So, if you think pampering yourself with that long-desired destination trip or gifting your loved ones that special gift or taking a deliberate step to preparing for the future of your family and kids and not living anything to chance or happenstance, planning the long-term goals are your go-to.

Without any doubt, mistakes, risks, and uncertainties and sometimes failure characterize human endeavours. It is essential not to leave anything to chance. Therefore, this year, no matter what your plan is, make sure to prioritize peace of mind and the confidence to acknowledge that there is assurance and comfort no matter what happens.

  • A Party with a Purpose! Johnnie Walker takes Island Block Party to Heights

Johnnie Walker partnered with Island Block Party to host one of the highly anticipated events of the year. It was truly an unforgettable experience as they served us the perfect blend of music, whiskey and games.

Guests had fun engaging with the Johnnie Walker #NoLabels quote while making up their own quotes to spice up the fun. Others had fun with the live experiences on-ground from the face painting to the customized merch provided by some creatives.

With its theme – #PartyNotConcert, the hypemen and DJs kept the energy up as they thrilled guests with some of the chart-topping music. The climax of the event was when Victony, one of the most promising breakout acts of 2021, ditched his wheelchair to deliver some of his hit songs while standing on his two feet. It was a moment to behold.

Other performances which took our breath away were Focalistic giving us some of that Amapiano magic and Falz, dropping some of his comic skills along with his tracks. Johnnie Walker also had its bar on-ground with enough of its signature highball cocktails and Red Label Pocket Scotch to keep the crowd pumped up for the artist’s performances.

Guests had a fun-filled night and were super ready to party till the morning. No surprise there though! Anywhere you find Johnnie Walker, best believe the show never stops. This partnership encourages young creatives to freely express themselves and keep walking their paths irrespective of the negative labels thrown at them.

  • 6 Nigerians Share Their Experience Getting STD Tests

Do you regularly get STD tests? Or have you never gotten one at all? It can be nerve-racking going to get tested, but equally important for your overall well-being. You know, it’s better to be safe and sure than sorry especially if you have multiple sexual partners. For this article, 6 Nigerians Share With Us Their Experience Getting STD tests.

    Jane, 25, F

The first time I got an STD test was in 2018. Before then, I’d had a steady partner so never felt the need to get one. When the relationship ended, I started hooking up with people without knowing their sexual histories. One day, my friend was talking about getting a routine check-up done and mentioned that it included STD testing. That’s when it occurred to me how irresponsible I’d been, and how I needed one too. After that initial test, I made STD testing a regular thing.

    Paul, 27, M

My girlfriend cheated on me in 2017, and the only reason I found out was that she got an STD and gave it to me. I didn’t even want to get a test at first because she told me she had an STD and that automatically means I have one too, but I got the test done anyway. Got a comprehensive STD test to catch anything she might have missed in her own testing. It was pretty straightforward and efficient. I went to pick up my results the next day. Since then, I made STD testing a regular part of my health routine. You can never be too sure.

    Abike, 31, F

I have been getting tested regularly since I was 21 years old. My biggest problem with getting STD tests is that some of the hospital staff can be very judgemental. Sometimes, they make snide comments about how sexually reckless I am to require a test, or that abstinence would prevent the need for a test in the first place.I moved around a lot, so I constantly changed hospitals, which means I was exposed to a lot of rubbish. When I settled down, I found a hospital a bit far from where I live but closer to my best friend’s house. The staff there are very professional and I’ve been getting tests there twice a year for over three years now.

    Olu, 27, M

My partner and I both decided it was in our best interest to test for STDs before “getting physical.” The tests went well. I got my result in minutes, and the hospital also emailed them to me for reference. I had insurance, so it was affordable and I do it regularly. I also got the rapid test kit to test myself at home occasionally, but I go to the hospital for the complete package.

    Sandra, 26, F

When I started dating my boyfriend, he insisted on us getting tested before becoming exclusive. So, we went together to get the test done. The hospital kept treating us as a couple and that was a small problem for me. It’s been four years, and he still insists we get it done at least once a year, which I think is a really good practice. It’s quick and we get it done with our usual medical checkup so I don’t mind.

    Cynthia, 21, F

I got my first STD test because I was sexually assaulted. I wanted to get the 72 hour PEP drug (Post Exposure Prophylaxis), but a test was done first. It was a fast test. It involved them collecting my blood and delivering my results not long after. I was asked to return in 3 months for another test because that’s the incubation time for some STDs, but I never got retested. Partly because of laziness and the fact that my parents didn’t take it seriously. They believed that because I’d already taken the drug, I didn’t need another test.

Looking to up your sexual health game? Having health insurance will make things hitch-free.

Hygeia HMO has a wide variety of health insurance plans for individuals, families, and even employees at businesses. You can get check-ups, medical advice, and treatment from health professionals at a fraction of the usual cost.

Visit Hygeia HMO to find a plan that best fits your needs.

  • 5 Ways to Hide Your Wealth from Family and Friends

Are you scared of family and friends blowing up your phone with calls and billing you for every little thing? What you need is a way to keep knowledge of your wealth away from them.

These five tips should do the trick.

    1. Make “God when” your motto

    3. Don’t tell them the exact price of things you buy

If you buy a wig of 85k, tell them you bought it 10k, because next thing you know, you’re buying bags of rice and paying the school fees of five extended relatives.

    4. Ask them for urgent 2k

How can they have the heart to ask you for money when you yourself are in need of urgent 2k? Asides urgent 2k, ask them to send airtime and data to complete the help-my-life act.

  • 6 Easy Ways to Escape House Chores this Christmas Period

Do you feel unexcited about Christmas because of the tiring visitors and house chores that come with it? Or are you the last born in your family dreading the heap of plates you’ll have to wash?

We feel your pain. Which is why we’ve compiled all the easy ways you can escape the clutches of house chores this Christmas period.

    1. Eat out

This is hands down the easiest solution. Why stress yourself cooking, sweating and serving when you can just outsource it at a restaurant?

    2. Burn the Christmas food

The less delicious it is, the lesser the chances of visitors asking for extra food will be. Which in turn would mean less plates for you to wash.

    3. Pay others a visit

Wear your Christmas cloth and pay other family and friends a visit. It’s not your own house people will turn to a restaurant.

    4. Turn your house to a fellowship ground

Anybody that visits you thinking they’ll come and eat and clean mouth will be in for a shocker. Eat in secret, then launch a series of intensive prayer sessions when they arrive. No one will tell them to take their leave.

    5. Tell everyone you’ve travelled

And if they see you outside on Christmas Day, just say their eyes must be playing tricks on them.

    6. Reuse one plate for everyone

For this to work, visitors have to wait for each other to finish eating before you dish food for the next person. If anyone complains, show them the door.

  • Where AFCON and EPL Meet

The English Premier League (EPL) will be entering a decisive stage at the beginning of the next year. As the competition comes close to its end, every point is crucial. It’s even possible to have expectations about the champions and runner-ups already. Or is it? The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is also set to start at the beginning of the next year. It means that many players now moving the crowds in Europe will be called back home. What does it change for EPL’s fans?

    Overlaps

The AFCON will happen between early January and early February in Cameroon. About 40 players are expected to be called back, only in the EPL, where 15 teams will likely feel the blow. Among the hardest hit ones, Liverpool, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, and Watford, losing four players each. Those players could miss one round of major European competitions, at best. Worst-case scenarios would see players off for four rounds or more. Other continental competitions, like the South American CONMEBOL or the Central American CONCACAF, will also cause an impact. Yet, the AFCON can shake the EPL. to Check the latest developments on the best football betting sites.

    Cameroon’s AFCON

The next AFCON will be played in Cameroon, although there are questions regarding its readiness for hosting the event. It has been postponed once already over safety and sanitary concerns. After a recent inspection visit, CAF’s authorities confirmed that the competition would run as scheduled.

    Names and Numbers

With top teams losing top players for a couple of rounds, everything can change in the EPL. Here’s how the teams will look for the next month or so. You can also follow the matter on the best premier league betting sites.

    Liverpool

Next month, The Reds will have to do without Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Naby Keita. Joel Matip won’t join them, as he’s out of international football already. Anyway, Salah and Mane will be sorely missed. Salah has scored 20 times only this season, and Mane, nine.

    Watford

The Hornets will see five top-tier players packing up next month. Nigeria is calling back. William Troost-Ekong, Emmanuel Dennis are responsible for more than ten goals over the last 14 matches. Louza and Masina will be playing for Morocco, while Sarr will defend Senegal. Such a blow can shift the odds to otherwise weaker teams, like Tottenham, Norwich, and West Ham.

    Crystal Palace

The Eagles are giving up four top players for the next month, namely Wilfried Zaha, Cheikou Kouyate, Jordan Ayew, and Jeffrey Schlupp. Crystal Palace is likely in for a rough month without players of equal level to put in their place.

    Leicester

Four top Leicester’s players are also on the line. Nampalys Mendy will be returning to Senegal and Wilfred Ndidi to Nigeria. Top scorers like Daniel Amartey, and Kelechi Iheanacho, will probably leave, too.

    Arsenal

Here’s another side losing almost half of its team. Ghana, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Gabon call Nicolas Pepe, Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, Gunners’ fans believe that AFCON could revitalise their talents.

    Chelsea

The Blues are losing a tremendous goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, who’s defending Senegal next month. Meanwhile, Hakim Ziyech is being called back to Morocco. Despite losing some of its best players, Chelsea can still replace Mendy with Kepa Arrizabalaga.

    Manchester City

The Citizens will be missing one of the world’s best players of the moment, Ryad Mahrez, who’ll be playing for Algeria. Yet, the club is so solid that such absence will barely make a difference. Manchester City has many attacking options of a comparable level. Additionally, they’ll face seriously dented teams, increasing their chances of the title.

    Reaction

English clubs have taken the matter to the superior stances of European football. Clubs are demanding guarantees of safety, and timely release of players, so that the competitions can have minimal overlap. In a letter to CAF, the European Club Association threatened not to release players if those conditions weren’t met. An excerpt of the letter reads that clubs shouldn’t be forced “to be without players for club competition matches”. The letter also questions the lack of medical protocols for the tournament, putting players at risk. There are fears that the country hasn’t improved its condition since the competition was last postponed. Yet, CAF’s and Cameroonian officials insist that the competition won’t be postponed again.

    Conclusion

Despite complaints and threats, African players probably won’t face major issues to defend their countries. Meanwhile, a lot can change in the English Premier League between January and February 2022.

  • High Blood Pressure in Young People? 3 Nigerians Share their Story

Hypertension in young people is more common than you think. It’s also more disturbing because the majority go unchecked and can result in further health complications.

We were able to speak with some Nigerians on how they manage hypertension. You can share with your circle to create awareness and save a life.

    Jessica, 18, F

“There was a period when I was very sick. I self-treated for malaria, but I wasn’t getting any better. Then my dad asked me to go to the hospital. As is the custom, before the doctor attended to me, a nurse checked my temperature and blood pressure level. She looked at me and back at the figure on the machine, then sent my file to the doctor. On getting to see the doctor, the first thing he asked was if I was hypertensive. I didn’t exactly know what that meant, so I responded in the negative. He then explained and informed me that I might have teenage hypertension because my blood pressure was 150/100 then. The scary thing is that it got higher than that over time. Then I was referred to a specialist and asked a series of questions, like if I was doing drugs. They ran a drug test to confirm, and it came out negative. Other tests were carried out to ascertain the cause of my hypertension including a renal scan (had something to do with my kidney). Finally, I was permanently placed on drugs, and it was hell; I was always urinating and tired. The drug was just one tablet every day with checkups, but I wasn’t getting any better. My blood pressure was still rising and falling. To make things worse, COVID happened, my dad got retrenched and I automatically got cut off from the HMO plan his company provided. Then I started paying for the drugs myself and saw that it was very expensive. Thankfully, I got better this year; my blood pressure was 120/80 for the first time in three years.”

    Biola, 25, F

Before now, I had limited information about what being hypertensive entails or how to prevent it. Maybe because we’re not properly sensitized about these things in this part of the world. Anyway, in 2018, I noticed I was always experiencing a certain level of fatigue and shortness of breath. I ignored this for a while due to my busy schedule until one day when I almost fainted on the road. On proper examination at the hospital, I was diagnosed with hypertension. It came as a shocker, because how old was I? Lol. In a nutshell, my fast-paced work lifestyle largely contributed to this. As a Digital Marketing Manager, there are days when I barely get time to catch a break, but I don’t complain, because I love what I do. But after that diagnosis, I had to make conscious lifestyle changes and periodic checks a priority. It’s not easy living with it, especially with the drugs and watching my diet, but I’m glad it’s manageable.

    Rotimi, 29, M

“I’d been in the NYSC camp in Ogun state for a week and had only slept for like 8 hours of that because the beds were wildly uncomfortable. I’m talking about paper-thin mattresses on bunk beds. I started having headaches that wouldn’t go away no matter what I tried so I went to the camp clinic to get checked out. As is routine at hospitals, the doctor checked my blood pressure first and gasped. She took a second reading as if to confirm what she just saw, and then called her colleagues to come to see. When she found out how old I was at the time (23), she had a long talk with me about how abnormal it is for a 23-year-old blood pressure reading to be 160/110. She put me on a drug named Moduretic and told me to make lifestyle changes to ensure I wasn’t on the drug for the rest of my life. I get regular checkups now and thanks to her, I know what to do to keep my blood pressure where it should be.”

Keeping track of your blood pressure and overall health doesn’t have to empty your pockets…

  • Johnnie Walker Partners Mama Burna, Burna Boy in New “Keep Walking” Campaign

Nigerian youths are stepping forward in solidarity with Johnnie Walker’s newest campaign – ‘Keep Walking’, a movement to celebrate communities of creatives across Africa who, in their walks, exemplify its long-standing mantra. The campaign is launched in partnership with notable personalities, one of whom is the African Giant himself, Burna Boy.

Leading the pan-African campaign is a video which showcases an energetic and vibrant ‘Anthem’ that mirrors the trials of being non-conformist and forward-thinking, while addressing negative labels, and depicting the doggedness of the average Nigerian youth.

Johnnie Walker, in this Ad, highlights the resilience of the youth in defying labels and embracing Afro-optimism, while calling on them to step forward and keep walking. This is why we are not surprised that Burna is a major voice in this movement. It is quite clear that the adaptation of the global ‘Keep Walking’ movement is captured through the lenses of Burna’s own walks in the featured video. We also see the ‘Keep Walking’ representation in other stories from convention-defying, non-conformist, culture shapers across the creative space in a documentary titled – The Ones Who.

This pan-African documentary spotlights Nigerians like Emo afrobeats star, CKay; World-class Afrobeats dancer and singer, Yeni Kuti; Nigeria’s first skate crew community, Waffles and Cream; renowned fashion and documentary photographer, Stephen Tayo and Nigeria-American filmmaker, Amarachi Nwosu.

In addition, this movement allows you to celebrate and gift special individuals this festive season through Johnnie Walker’s mega gifting platform. The platform allows you carve out personalized messages to The Ones Who have inspired your walk and allows the whisky company join you on the journey to carve your own path.

For us, the entire campaign is an apt representation of the shoes we walk in and why ‘Keep Walking’ is created to put a spring in our step as we stake our claim, finding our own paths and building our own future to becoming a generation of giants. We don’t think there is a more powerful way to share this message. Stay engaged with Keep Walking, as Johnnie Walker, the world’s favourite whisky, unveils a diverse range of immersive experiences.

  • 7 Nigerians on Going for Routine Health Check-Ups

When was the last time you went in for a health check-up? While juggling the many aspects of your daily life, it’s easy to forget this equally vital aspect of your well-being.

In a bid to better understand how people navigate this, we spoke with seven Nigerians and they shared their thoughts and experiences with health checks.

    Read on.

    Didi, 21, F

The first time I went for a thorough health check-up in my adult life was when I had an accident and hit my pelvis on a concrete floor. The second time was recently when I noticed that I experienced difficulty breathing after climbing stairs or walking a distance, which wasn’t the case a few months ago. The check-up wasn’t an enjoyable experience; the delays, expenses, and stress was just a lot, but I had to get through it. Unfortunately, I do not have health insurance, so the cost of everything made me wince, but this is “adulting”, after all.

    Femi, 23, M

Let me just say check-ups can be hectic in Nigerian hospitals. So, I don’t have them done as often as I’d like. Also, there’s the expansive consultation fees, depending on what kind of check-up. I remember last year, when I went in for a routine eye check up, I had to cough out 30k at a go for one test alone. I just kept thinking to myself, “Checking to see if I’m in good shape shouldn’t be this hard nau.” Lol. And the worst part of everything is that I was given no explanation whatsoever on the tests being carried out. It was just a weird process of having things shoved in my face, and told to do this and that without a WHY. I then had to be the one constantly asking questions before I’ll hear stories that touch. They should do better, abeg.

    Esther, 23, F

I consider periodic check-ups to be considerably important. Maybe because I currently have a health condition that could have been better managed if it was diagnosed on time. Now, I’m a big advocate for health checks. You never really know what you’ve come in contact with over time. So, it’s best to be sure there aren’t any underlying illnesses. It can be expensive, especially when consulting specialists, but by all means necessary. Better to be safe, than sorry.

    Lola, 24, F

In general, I usually have appointments setup by my GP, the intervals sometimes vary, so I guess I could chuck it up to several times a year. But honestly, since being back to Nigeria, I only see a healthcare professional when it’s become absolutely necessary, which isn’t great, but I hate the services here, and prefer to avoid it altogether. Also, there tends to be a lack of awareness with people and the workings of their bodies (especially in the context of this society), which prevents them from noticing little changes when they happen. Checkups, however, could point these changes and their implications out. In my case, I went in for a pap smear, and I was diagnosed with HPV. It just didn’t add up, since I had one sexual partner, with whom I very rarely had penetrative sex, and they themselves weren’t positive. It could have been alarming for anyone else, but I think I’m kind of jaded health-wise, so I was more focused on the fix, than the problem.

    Timi, 25, M

On a scale of 1 – 10, I’d rate the importance of going for check-ups a resounding 10. I think they potentially save lives in a lot of cases, but many people take it lightly until they manifest one symptom or the other. And who would blame them? Anything hospital-related is bound to incur expenses if one doesn’t have health insurance. Thankfully, one of the perks of working at my company is HMO, so I don’t necessarily have to worry about costs. I go for check-ups every four months, and while I’ve never discovered any life-threatening illness, it’s reassuring to have it done.

    Joy, 33, F

I always have one health wahala or the other, and you would think that would make me more invested in going for check-ups, but the reverse is the case, which is bad, I know. It’s mostly when my body shuts down and I can’t perform my normal daily activities that I go for checks (don’t be like me, please!). The last instance of this was in October when I was forced to run a full body scan after coughing for a long time. That’s when it was discovered that dust was lodged in my lungs and I was severely dehydrated. I’m still in the recovery process and following my doctor’s advice for improvement.

    Kolawole, 53, M

You know, when one gets to this age, extra caution has to be applied. This is where check-ups come in. In the past, it has saved me from a condition I wasn’t even aware of; earlier this year, May to be precise, I went in for my routine check up as usual, and the doctor diagnosed me with Ascites to my surprise. While I had observed the swellings around my leg and discomfort in my abdomen, I didn’t think it would be something serious enough to require a surgery. My children were worried as well, but thankfully, the it was nipped in the nick of time. I don’t want to imagine what would have happened if I never see my doctor often.

Getting health insurance from Hygeia HMO can help you better prioritise routine check-ups.

  • We Ranked the Ways Nigerians Introduce Themselves (from Bad to Worst)

Nigerians do the most when it comes to announcing their presence. If you’re wondering what some of the ways this plays out are, read on.

We’ve identified and ranked them from the bad to the very worst.

    How do Nigerians introduce themselves?

    5. They don’t

A lack of proper introduction from a Nigerian is an introduction in itself. Strange number texted you on WhatsApp? It’s either one of these scenarios – they got your number from some friend who they won’t name, tell you not to worry about getting a proper introduction, or just send a lone “Hi.”Then all you’ll hear is crickets after asking how they got your number. Nawa.

    4. “It’s me”

If a Nigerian knocks on your door and you ask, “Who’s there?” don’t expect a proper introduction. It is them. If you can’t figure out their identity from the way the knock sounds, you have to open the door and hope that it’s not your village people catching up with you.

    3. iPhone ringtone

Nigerian iPhone users want their devices to do the introduction. Before you speak to them, first know that they’re not your mate.

    2. “You don’t know who is speaking?”

This type of introduction is common with phone calls where the caller’s identity is supposed to be ministered to you by the Holy Spirit. It can also be, “Ah. So you didn’t save my number?” Take note that if you confess to not saving their number, you’ll be in for it despite them being the ones introducing themselves wrongly. Wahala oh.

    1. “Do you know who I am?”

When a Nigerian asks you this question, it is not rhetorical. You’re expected to respond in the negative. Then they’ll go on a self-aggrandising spree on how they can make your life a living hell for disrespecting them. Situations where this introduction format can be used include: ATM queues, banking halls, restaurants…basically anywhere flexing fragile egos are allowed.

Here are five reasons to embrace this public offer and invest:

  • 15 Things You Should Know How to Do by Age 30

Turning 30 can feel like the morning after a wild partying spree; you can still feel the euphoria from the night before, but you realise, “Oh shit. I have to get my life together or I’m die.”

It doesn’t have to be so serious, though. None of us have totally hacked the whole getting-your-life-together thing. In fact, some of the expectations you have as you get older may very well be unnecessary pressure you don’t have to succumb to; like getting married or having ten kids to carry on the family name. No, mother. Please.

Still, it’s not a bad idea to know how to do at least five things on this list before you turn the big 30.

    You’ve got this!

    1. Shoot shots (romantic and platonic)

In this day and age of social media, it all starts with how you slide into DMs. Don’t slide in with bathroom slippers. Go in with your best suede shoes. You have to come correct if you want to find a BFF or love of your life.

    2 Hold conversations

Sure, this might come naturally to some people, but you’d agree that “Wyd?” could be better off as “I noticed you do/like xyz. Can you tell me about that?” Try this angle and see if they keep ignoring your DMs.

    3. Apologise

You have to learn to lower your shoulders and genuinely say “I’m sorry” when you’re in the wrong. It will feel uncomfortable, but you won’t die. We promise.

    4. Communicate

Effective communication saves other people from trying to figure out what’s in your head (how you feel, or what you want, etc). This, too, can feel super uncomfortable, but it’s a skill you will be thankful for in the long-run.

    5. Cook beans without burning the house down

Unless you want your landlord to come for you. Plus, life is less scary knowing that you have at least one survival skill – whipping up a decent meal.

    6. Cross the road

Whatever you do, don’t start out by crossing at a T-junction. Start small; from your parlour to your room, a small street here and there. Learn this so your friends can rest knowing you won’t get yourself killed by oncoming traffic. Also, when in doubt, look left, look right, and look left again.

    7. Make semo/eba/amala/pap/custard without lumps

This has nothing to do with being husband or wife material. It’s so you don’t waste these ingredients. Have you seen how expensive they are these days? Plus, the satisfaction you get knowing you did that shit doesn’t have part two.

    8. Identify a scam message/scammer

You work too hard for your life savings to disappear in the blink of an eye. Stay alert in these physical and online streets, dear.

    9. Drive on a Nigerian road

If this doesn’t kill you by the time you are thirty, then you’ll know that you’ve conquered it. Phew!

    10. Not catch feelings for everyone you talk to

Do you like “breakfast” served to you on a golden platter? Thought as much. You’ll have to start by rewiring your brain, because you will meet A LOT of amazing people. The aim is not to fall in love with them all, but to experience them as they come and build connections.

    11. Get your finances together

We don’t mean to sound like your mum, but she’s right. Saving, investing, taking stock and creating budgets are actually important things you should get a hang of before thirty if you don’t want to be an onigbese.

    12. Switch from generator to light with the speed of Usain Bolt

As a Nigerian, once you’ve mastered this, add: “I am not your mate” to your social media bio.

    13. Say “NO” with your full chest

You didn’t go through torturous years of adulting to be scared of offending people or establishing your boundaries. Las las , they’ll be fine.

    14. Shake your ass on a yacht

A.k.a know how to enjoy life, after all, you literally get only one shot at it. And no, bingeing on Netflix for sixty hours straight doesn’t make the cut. Get your best buds and make beautiful memories in the outside.

    15. Give A-class head

Rule number one: no teeth. Please and thanks. It’s okay to ask questions and figure out what works for your partner. That’s actually a way to hack it and make them call you names that’ll make you blush.

If this article is giving zen vibes, then you should probably share it right away. T for tenks!
