Senator Dino Melaye | Zikoko!
• Femi Fani-Kayode and Dino Melaye Have Gone Mad Again

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former federal minister, and Dino Melaye, a former senator, have exactly two things in common — they’ve both been in the same Nollywood film and possess an abundant lack of shame. Both men have years of political experience under their belts, but their most visible contribution to Nigerian politics has been farcical comedy.

Femi Fani-Kayode and Dino Melaye Have Gone Mad Again

On the one hand, Fani-Kayode is unintentionally hilarious because he takes himself too seriously and shoots off wacky conspiracy theories like evil spirits directing Nigeria’s affairs.

On the other hand, Dino Melaye is a deeply intentional comedian with his skits and theatrics, including dodging a court appearance by faking a kidnap story that involved hiding on a treetop for 11 hours

Together, Fani-Kayode and Melaye are both the unstoppable force and immovable object of political comedy in Nigeria. And they clashed on social media this week.

Femi Fani-Kayode and Dino Melaye Have Gone Mad Again

Who started it?

On September 4th, 2022, Fani-Kayode called for the arrest of Melaye and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for alleged corruption. He said Melaye confessed in an interview that PDP governors spent money on delegates to elect party chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, in 2021, violating electoral laws.

And because Fani-Kayode can’t do without speaking big English, he called the PDP “a party of scammers, carpet-baggers, vote-procurers, petty thieves, pickpockets and yahoo-yahoo criminals.”

Fani-Kayode also warned the Nigerian police to take action or he’d be forced to drag the PDP to court. You see, unintentional comedian.

How did Melaye take it?

Melaye didn’t take Fani-Kayode’s finger-pointing too well when he issued his own response hours later. First, he said the comment his nemesis referred to was from an old interview — as if that changes anything — and devolved into his own round of name-calling like “bootlicker”, “drug addict” and “a serial hustler around food dispensers”.

And this was when the real war moved to the worst place imaginable: Twitter.

A timeline of insults… and skits

Fani-Kayode spent much of September 5th calling Melaye an “asslicker” and drug addict with tweets like this:

And Melaye responded with a video clip of a random woman calling Fani-Kayode a drug addict.

On September 6th, Melaye played his next card: a clip of the current Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, accusing Fani-Kayode of embezzling over ₦2 billion during his tenure as Minister of Aviation between 2006 and 2007. Melaye now added his own jara that Fani-Kayode spent the money on drugs.

Fani-Kayode responded with his own video “proof” that Amaechi’s allegation was bogus. He also found it in his heart to call Melaye a “fat, desperate, mannerless, filthy and uncouth plebian, peasant and clown”.

But the entire time, he still considered his engagement to be “mild and restrained”.

God save us all if this is restrained

Before we go on, here’s an intermission showing Melaye doesn’t know how front cameras work:

And back to the battleground, Fani-Kayode posted this hilarious video of Melaye seriously play-acting to avoid police detention. He also dropped some mean words mixed with homophobia, because that’s who this former minister is.

He followed it up with this picture of Melaye in the trenches to remind him he used to be poor:

And Melaye was quick to reply that with, “And so?”

We presume Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” was playing in the background when he tweeted this

Does this thing end?

For the grand finale that’s better than what Game of Thrones gave the world, Fani-Kayode and Melaye finished with a battle of skits.

Melaye dropped his skit first and it looked like this:

And Fani-Kayode responded with his own skit:

We really just have some sympathy for those bodyguards and hangers-on who were dragged into the production of these skits to earn their urgent ₦2k. Also, it wasn’t a great day for interior decor.

So, who won?

After dragging each other back and forth for three days, Melaye tweeted that he’d no longer dignify a politically-irrelevant Fani-Kayode with more responses.

And Fani-Kayode graciously accepted the ceasefire by calling Melaye a lipstick-wearing pig. He also hinted that the ceasefire happened because “leaders” intervened behind the scenes.

Femi Fani-Kayode and Dino Melaye Have Gone Mad Again

And now, we hope we can start seeing some of the “issues-based election campaigns” everyone talks about even though we never really see it happen.

• 10 Biggest Political Scandals Of The 2010s

Politics in Nigeria is so dramatic so we decided to pick out from the pool of mayhem and shenanigans that happened throughout the decade to bring y’all the award winning performance of the nation’s politicking sagas.

Trust me, it was pretty hard trying to figure out which of the many dramas that occurred throughout the 2010s should make this list, but here are some of the more interesting ones:

1) Dino Melaye On The Dimeji Bankole Impeachment Saga (2010):

Although we are not giving any prizes, Dino Melaye is our favorite and most entertaining politician of the decade; he’s been a trouble maker and a trendsetter in politics for as long as he’s been a politician.

Going as far back as when Dimeji Bankole was the Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2010, Dino was one of the reps that caused quite a raucous at the house when a motion was raised to impeach Bankole, who was seated calmly, watching chaos unfold right in front of him.

2) Pandemonium In Rivers State Assembly (2013):

Rivers state has always been a hot region but the intensity of the heat was brought to the attention of Nigerians when a free-for-all pandemonium ensued in the state’s senate that left a man’s head and jaw broken and the place in an uproar.

3) Senators Showing Off Their Climbing Skills (2014):

Somehow, senators made the police force stationed in the 7th National Assembly so mad, they got locked out of the Senate house and had to climb a gate to get through; after hours of agitated discussions, persuasions and pleading.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SRsvk5vbkA

4) GEJ & iPhone 5 Legbegbe (2014):

Former president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, threw a lavish wedding ceremony for his daughter but many Nigerians couldn’t get over the fact that the alleged iPhone 5 souvenirs were quite extravagant, especially given the fact that Nigeria was still reeling from the shock of Chibok girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram.

5) Oluremi Tinubu vs Dino Melaye (2016):

Dino is everything nobody really likes even though he makes up for it with his singing and theatrics. He proved himself to be a misogynist when he told Senator Remi Tinubu that he would “beat up and impregnate her on the Senate floor and nothing would be done about it”.

This was as a result of a series of clashes and altercations between them, mostly because of his (and Bukola Saraki’s) defection to PDP from APC at the time. Watch Dino trying to defend himself for something so inexcusable:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaf3sxgvn6c

6) Senators Soliciting Prostitutes In America (2016):

Three Nigerian senators embarrassed the life out of us by their scandalous habits, wandering hands and indecent proposals. Samuel Ikon, Mohammed Gololo and Mark Gbillah went on a business trip ( the International Visitor Leadership Program) to Cleveland, USA, with their meandering ways and got called out for harassing their hotel housekeeper and looking for prostitutes.

Just look at their mugshot.

7) Lothario Buka Abbah Sex Scandal (2017):

Former Nigerian Senator Buka Abbah Ibrahim was caught with his pants down, literally and nobody found it palatable at all.

8) Senator Omo-Agege Kidnapping The Mace (2018):

Former Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, now Deputy Senate President, walked into a senate session with thugs to get away with the mace, disrupting activities in the senate on that fateful day. His actions left many aghast, and even more so when he became the Deputy President of the 9th Senate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OStFIHPD42w&has_verified=1

9) Fragile Fayose (2018):

Oh you really thought Dino Melaye was the only drama king in Nigerian politics? Nah, of course not. The former governor of Ekiti state, Peter Fayose, pulled a close second to that role while he was in office. Just take a look at the video below, where Fayose complained of his broken neck–while turning it–to see what I mean.

10) That time when Senator Abbo assaulted a woman in a sex shop (2019):

Let’s take a moment to forget the fact that Senator Elisha Abbo was spotted in a sex toy shop and totally focus on the fact that he was cocky enough to slap a woman there, thinking he would get away with it. And that’s something we will never forget.

Honorable Mention– Dino The Musician (2016):

Dino again? Recall when I stated that he was a trendsetter? Let’s focus on his famous musical videos that got everyone talking for a longtime.

I wonder what Yahaya Bello would have to say now if he re-watches the diss video Dino Melaye made for him.

We tell you the most important things that happened in Nigeria, during the week, in a way that won’t bore you to death.

• Dino Melaye – you must have heard of him if you’re Nigerian. Or even if you’re not, because he’s that big of a star. Still, let me give you a brief introduction. He’s a Nigerian senator, an accomplished actor and musician, as well as the ultimate baby boy. Here’s just a few of Dino’s most iconic moments.

Just look at that smize! This is the level of baby boy I aspire to.

Ajekun iya ni’oje

Ah… This one is a classic. No Dino Melaye story can be told without adding his rather iconic diss song to Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello, after it was confirmed that he is indeed, educated. The details of their battle might be fuzzy, but this song is evergreen to us.

His entire music career.

Just in case y’all didn’t know, Dino officially entered the music scene not when he performed ‘Ajekun Iya’ live, but when he appeared in the music video…of a hit song about himself! You can’t tell me nothing – he’s living his best life.

Showing up in a stretcher to court.

Moving on from music, Dino has also tried his hand at acting. This was originally his true love, and he has a few acting credits under his Gucci belt. One of his most famous and challenging roles was when he abandoned his fleet of exotic foreign cars, and pulled up to an Abuja court on a stretcher for allegedly breaking the windshield of a police vehicle and threatening to kill himself. A revolutionary.

Jean-Claude Melaye.

The action hero none of us realized we needed, Dino actually performs his own stunts. He was arrested in Abuja in connection to a murder case and other criminal activities, and apparently assumed he would be interrogated there. However, the police had a few tricks up their sleeves and started heading towards Kogi State. Terrified of what awaited him, Dino took a leap of faith out of the moving police vehicle.

The Nightcrawler.

Call me naive, but you tell me how else someone whose passport was supposedly seized could leave Nigeria and mysteriously appear in the abroad. I choose to believe he’s actually Nightcrawler because it makes no sense. Baba actually posted this picture with his chest, with the caption “Happy to be away from the joke going on in Naija today.” as his caption to really pepper Nigeria. Teach us your ways, sir.

THIS outfit!

Dino’s sense of style is just as vibrant as his personality. He is truly a style icon of our time. Dino actually broke the internet this day that he stepped out in designer, looking like the African Red Ranger.

A ladies’ man.

Although Dino has not been known for his empowerment of the Nigerian woman, he came to our defense like the knight in shining armor that he’s really not, when he went on a really shady rant on the Senate floor. Perhaps guilt-triggered by the former Edo State governor’s appeal to support more made-in-Nigeria products, Dino infamously asked Nigerians to ignore the governor, whom he said chose not to “patronise ‘made-in-Nigeria women but a foreign one”, referring to Oshiomole’s Cape Verdean wife. Yikes.

No vex, na God.

At the end of the day, you can’t even vex for Dino and his antics, because last last, na God.
• King Of Controversy, Dino Melaye, Drops Yet Another Sexist Tweet

You may have seen this video of Dino Melaye comparing women to products during the March 2nd sitting at the senate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv0W5aQhqMc
Where he also asked the members on the floor to “patronise made in Nigeria women”. He asked them to stop paying dowry in dollars and pounds and even shamed his colleague, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, for marrying a foreigner (who is actually African and from Cape Verde).

Even little children should take knocks for that statement.

Maybe the heat and fuel scarcity made people forget how wrong that comment was.

And as if he thrives on making such comments, he went on a shade trip after his long time opponent, Senator Adeyemi, joined his party APC.

His anger isn’t misplaced sha. Just imagine if your teacher forced you to become seat partners with that student you hated so much in your class.

After ranting and ranting.

Na wa oh! Aren’t they supposed to be working together for the progress of party and country?

Throwing shade…

Only a scared person would go on a Twitter rant when a former opponent joins his party sha.

Upon shade…

He’s even trying to be deep, nice one senator!

He ended things with this tweet.

WOW!

Wait…

WHAT???

Is he trying to say he flogs his wife?

Is he even serious?

Does that mean he doesn’t see anything wrong with physical abuse against women?

He has kuku compared women to products before.

Why is he comparing the defeat of another man to flogging his wife?

Dis tew much!

Why is he comparing someone he obviously dislikes so much to his wife?

Does he even regard his wife at all?

But we have one prayer wish for the senator so he can be cured of sexism and misogyny…

Amen! [zkk_poll post=27882 poll=content_block_standard_format_13]
• The Drama Between Sahara Reporters and Nigerian Senator Dino Melaye Is Beyond Entertaining!
There’s a saying that goes, “Those that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” This proverb perfectly explains Senator Dino Melaye’s current situation. The Senator, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, is one of the proponents for the adoption of the Social Media Bill.

His focus is on Sahara Reporters, a website known for its guerrilla-styled news reporting, insisting that they are blackmailing the senate.

<!– // (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’)); // ]]>
The Dino Melaye Madness VIDEO: Frustrated pro Corruption Campaigner @dino_melaye calls on US Government to ban @SaharaReporters
Posted by Oluwakayode Olumide Ogundamisi on Friday, December 4, 2015

A day later, he was under flack from Sahara Reporters. In a series of tweets, they alleged that he had an illegal bank account in the United States.

They also tweeted evidence to that effect.

https://twitter.com/SaharaReporters/status/673471227734937601

The fracas between the two parties is a complete 180 degree turn from when Senator Dino was an anti-corruption lobbyist who stoutly supported Sahara Reporters in their quest to ensure that the Nigerian public know the truth.

With Sahara Reporters founder, Omoyele Sowore.

Senator Dino also replied the allegations.

Nigerians have these to say about the matter.

Hon @dino_melaye, by the virtue (or lack thereof) of this tweet, I’m disappointed you’re a senator of my country.

In the mean time, we’re still waiting for the outcome of the Social Media Bill.
