  • Adeleke Has Done These Things In Two Days As Osun Governor

When Ademola Adeleke beat the current governor, Gboyega Oyetola, in the Osun State governorship election in July 2022, it was clearly the beginning of a new era for the state. But no one can say they saw what’s currently happening in the state coming.

Ademola Adeleke is the new governor of Osun State

    What happened next?

Senator Adeleke was finally sworn in on November 27, 2022, as the sixth elected governor of Osun State. Hardly 24 hours in, he issued executive orders that have ruffled many feathers. Let’s take a look at the effect of his orders.

    Suspensions

Adeleke ordered the immediate suspension of the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, Segun Oladitan, and six other members of the commission. Adeleke didn’t like that there were many petitions against the officials for negligence of duty, abuse of office, absenteeism and financial impropriety. Who knew petitions could work so well in our part of the world?

    Unemployment

A few weeks before Oyetola finished his tenure, he approved the appointment of 30 permanent secretaries into various ministries. Unfortunately, these appointments lasted only briefly as Adeleke completely nullified them.

    And even more unemployment

The permanent secretaries were just some of the people appointed by Oyetola. The outgoing governor also mass employed 12,000 workers, but they couldn’t escape Adeleke’s executive order, as they were sacked.

    Delayed monarchs

It’s one thing when common people face the brunt of a new government and another when even royalty isn’t spared. Adeleke paused the recent appointments of three monarchs: Akirun of Ikirun, Oba Yinusa Akadiri; Aree of Iree, Oba Ademola Oluponle; and Owa of Igbajo, Oba Adegboyega Famodun. Oyetola approved their appointments, but Adeleke said their palaces will remain locked until he’s reviewed the process.

Why did Adeleke make these decisions?

Adeleke believes Oyetola has been trying to sabotage his incoming government since he beat him in July. He described many of his post-election appointments as malicious because no provisions were made in the budget for their salaries.

No one knows how the story will unfold, but it’s clear that even post-elections, Adeleke and Oyetola are still at odds with each other, and the common people are the ones suffering for it.

  • 4 Beautiful Places People From Osun Recommend You Visit

Tucked deep in the south-west, you’ve probably passed through Osun state on your way to other places in Nigeria. You probably didn’t spare the state another glance. Apart from playing host to Obafemi Awolowo University, arguably the best federal university in Nigeria (haters will say it’s a lie), Osun state is also home to a number of world-class attractions. Here’s a couple of them.

    1. Osun Osogbo Sacred Grove

In the early 20th Century, every town in Yorubaland had a sacred grove. Sadly, many of these groves have been abandoned. Osun-Osogbo was founded about 400 years ago in Osogbo, the state’s capital and hosts the largest and last remaining major sacred grove.

In the sanctuary, there are numerous sculptures and artworks in honour of the goddess Osun and other Yoruba deities. It also hosts two palaces, five sacred places and nine worship points along the banks of the River Osun.

    2. Opa Oranmiyan (Oranmiyan’s staff)

This site, whose name translates to Oranmiyan’s staff (no, not that kind, get your mind out of the gutter) is an obelisk situated in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The 5.5 metre high edifice is thin granite column and was said to have been constructed in the year 1300. It also has a pretty interesting origin story.

    3. Erin-Ijesha Waterfalls

It is said that the pristine waterfalls were discovered by a daughter of Ododuwa in 1140 AD (almost 1000 years ago). Other accounts claim it was discovered by hunters in the same year. Whichever account you believe, one thing is clear: Erin Ijesha is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Nigeria. A collection of cascades, this 7-part waterfall paints the most idyllic scene. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even climb all seven levels of the waterfall.

    4. Oduduwa Shrine and Grove

Many people believe that the Oduduwa World Temple and Grove is the hsitroical site where Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race arrived in Ile-Ife. It’s also said to be where he’s buried. The site features a life-sized statue of Oduduwa, his legendary chain and staff and a map of Africa carved in stone.

  • Beyonce Channels Osun Goddess And Yoruba Spirituality In ‘Lemonade’

On the evening of April 23rd, Queen B blessed the world with her visual album titled Lemonade, which premiered on HBO.

As if she wanted to kill us with slayage, she featured several awesome people such as Ibeyi (the French-Cuban twins),  Zendaya, Amandla Stenberg…

    And even Serena ‘Slayrena’ Williams.

Beyonce also featured Nigerian Afromysterics artist and Nike ambassador, Laolu Senbanjo.

He channeled his “Sacred art of the Ori”, which is his own way of expressing Yoruba spirituality through art, in Beyonce’s album.

Beyonce just had to recognise the fierceness of Yoruba goddess, Osun and channeled the goddess with her yellow dress and by opening these golden doors with water gushing out of them.

Beyonce wore a mischievous smile while breaking car mirrors and water hydrants.

Osun is also known for her unpredictable temperament, and is associated with beauty, femininity, twins and water.

Although most Nigerians are not exactly familiar with our indigenous culture, it shouldn’t always take “foreign exposure” to make Nigerian culture and customs appreciated locally.
