  • Yoruba Nollywood Has Held The Nigerian Film Industry by the Neck and Won’t Let Go

Over the years, Nollywood has given us stellar movies like Lionheart, Blood Vessel, and King of Thieves, which have broken records and language barriers. The industry has given us different storylines on different platforms, with more movies debuting first in cinema before finding a home on one of the two streaming giants in Nigeria – Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video.

Calculate the amount of money made from ticket sales and whatever the streaming service will pay for streaming rights real quick.

The Yoruba branch of Nollywood seems to have seen the performance of these “big production” movies that debut in cinema and have decided to pitch their tent there.

Mainstream Nollywood seems to have mastered the art of hiding behind these big productions and bigger names to deliver stories that leave you at a loss for words, wondering what you could’ve possibly done to deserve such treatment.

While Mainstream has been doing this for years, the Yoruba branch’s insistence on breaking in with the cinema crowd has only become obvious in the last year, with back-to-back cinema releases from industry OGs like Femi Adebayo (King of Thieves), Odunlade Adekola (Orisa), Jaiye Kuti (Alagbede), and Toyin Abraham (Ijakumo).

These movies get the audience’s attention with big premieres and interesting marketing strategies, causing people to flock to watch them on release only to return with mouths full of questions regarding the storyline, acting, and general quality.

Naturally, this has us moaning and groaning every time a new movie is released, but maybe this issue affects the entire industry, not just this branch.

    Here’s why

On multiple occasions, Nigerians have come out to complain about the lack of authentic stories about the reality of the average Nigerian, their experiences, and culture, as well as their tiredness at the continuous portrayal of flamboyant displays of wealth and the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge – all of which are actually part of the Nigerian experience – on their screens.

Nollywood has obviously taken this to heart and tried its hands at something new, but just because the action genre, language-speaking epics, and the theme of police brutality work for some doesn’t mean they’ll work for others.

The industry needs to realize that the audience has grown tired of seeing the same storylines with the same faces in the same settings. It’s time for the industry and all its branches to return to the drawing board and figure out how to tell stories in ways that don’t leave the audience questioning their sanity.

Yoruba language films may currently be offering us poor-quality entertainment on multiple distribution platforms (cinema and streaming services) in exchange for our time and money, but this isn’t a problem peculiar to them.

The entire industry moves as though it could care less for its audience, almost like they’re poking, prodding, and daring us, trying to see how much they can get away with in plotlines, costume, location, makeup, and VFX. At this point, we might need to stop complaining, get down on our knees, and beg industry stakeholders of all the branches (Mainstream, Yoruba, Asaba, Kannywood, Abuja, etc) to have mercy on us and start caring about the art that comes within the business of filmmaking.

  • 4 Nigerians Talk About the Anime Characters Patience Ozokwor Could Learn Wickedness From

Some anime characters are so wicked that Patience Ozokwor could learn a thing or two from them. These four Nigerians have some passionate opinions on those characters.

    Toyo (She/They)

Lowkey, everything about Dio Brando’s character gives me the ick. Anyone who watches JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and likes him is a psychopath. This man is from hell, — literally since he’s a vampire, hit a dog and then burnt the dog. Why would anyone fight something that can’t fight back? Even Patience Ozokwor used to manage to have small emotions and just poison things.

Dio Brando also turned a woman into a vampire and made her eat her child. If I had to describe him to someone, I’d say imagine if a genie, a character from Sailor Moon and a bodybuilder had a child.

    Shelah – They/She/Him

The anime character I find wicked is Yagami Light from Death Note. Nobody is wickeder than that dude, abeg. He had a god complex, and I honestly don’t understand how people keep saying he’s right! HE’S NOT!

He found a death note owned by a Shinigami, and the rule is that any human who finds the note can kill anyone by just writing their names in the book. At first, he started writing names of criminals, but this nigga graduated to killing his father (not technically, but still). In total, he killed a total of 124,925 people with that note. There’s simply no justification for that.

     Kurome-chan – She/Her

Prime Minister Honest from Akame ga Kill because he’s a fool. An idiotic, selfish, irresponsible character. He was self-involved and willing to let everybody in the kingdom die because of his ambitions. He’s like if Uncle Iroh from Avatar was evil and heartless. I don’t know why they kept calling him honest, someone that is the best at being manipulative and emotionally abusive to everybody. Dfkm. If I catch that guy, it’s on sight.

    Niel – He/Him

I watch anime and read manga and manhua a lot, and so far, the evilest character I’ve come across is All For One from My Hero Academia. He emotionally and physically abused his son Shigaraki to the point that he became out of control. Shigaraki started to use his decay quirk to destroy things so that people could feel and relive the same pain he felt in his childhood days with All For One. I also want to use this chance to say that all the people in the hidden leaf village from Naruto are wicked. How can you bully and shun an innocent child, unaware of whatever evil demon was inside him and still come to depend on him consistently to save you? A bunch of foolish nonsense people.

  • What Are Some Of Your Unpopular Sex Opinions?

Riddle me this: What’s one thing Nigerians like a lot but also pretend about?

    A) Good governance

    B) Sex.

    The correct answer is B.

Inspired by a conversation over the weekend, here are some of the most unpopular opinions about sex some Nigerians have:

    1) “Sexual cheating doesn’t mean your partner doesn’t love you and it’s obviously not enough reason to end a relationship.”

    2) “Lasting long is not always a great thing. Sex should be as short as possible. Release me.”

    3) “Sex in your forties slap better because it is full of love and tenderness. At this age, there is no pressure to show off or be a stud. It’s more about intimacy and connection.”

    4) “The only choking I want is with love and affection. I don’t know who told you people that attempted murder is sexy.”

    5) “Threesome is only lit if they are all bi-sexual.”

    6) “Shower sex is overrated but maybe it’s because I dey use bucket and bailer for house sha.”

    7) “It’s okay not to shave. Come here my bush baby.”

    8) “Don’t call me daddy. It’s cringe.”

    9) “Don’t ask me to stick anything up my butt. I won’t do it. And trying to guilt me into doing something I don’t like is no different from asking a woman to do what she doesn’t want to.”

    10) “Oral sex should be banned because it’s too risky. People are licking Candidiasis, oral thrush, and are shouting energy.”

    11) “Masturbation > actual sex. People have drama and sometimes I just want to get my orgasm without wondering if she got hers. It’s nothing personal.”

    12) “Missionary is the best sex position. It’s the hero we don’t deserve.”

    13) “I only enjoy sex if my partner is happy. The pressure around it is too much. Men will worry about how long they last, women will worry about if their body is perfect. Kiloshele gan gan.”

    14) “I believe in saving myself for my husband. Yes, even if he’s not a virgin.”

  • This Beauty Vlogger’s Opinion On Rape Will Leave You Speechless
Rape is one of the most controversial topics discussed on the internet.

However, it would be unreasonable to still blame rape victims for getting raped.

This self-acclaimed Biafran Vlogger, Zara Udochi, who is currently based in Canada, thinks otherwise.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BB1KYiKNmiL/?taken-by=zaraa_u

She recently shared her thoughts on rape via her Youtube channel and started by giving several shout outs to rape victims.

According to her, an indecently dressed person is asking for rape.

She says “If you dress a certain way, and you get raped.. In my opinion you were asking for it”.

And rape is caused by war and poverty.

“I know that rape culture is part of wars, I know that when you have wars, it comes with rapes, it comes with looting,  is a part of a regressive society, I know rape is a part of poverty , I know that rape is caused when the economy is not going as it is supposed to.”

She also believes relationship rapes are not true because the woman probably enjoyed it.

“There are instances that at that point in time you didn’t want it and the guy probably still had sex with you, you probably still enjoyed it o, you’re now screaming rape, that’s selfish.”

    Wait first…

When people with international exposure still manage to not have sense.

When she said indecency causes rape.

Maybe she was trying to climb the internet ‘social ladder’ with her YouTube video.

You can watch the full video of her opinion here.

Well sha, we hope she educates herself on what rape really is and the bitter effects the victims face.
