  • Nnayi Sacrifice x Mama G: 7 Nollywood Pairs Who Would Make Actual Power Couples

Nnayi Sacrifice x Mama G: 7 Nollywood Pairs Who Would Make Actual Power Couples

BBNaija’s Bella and Big Sheggz are getting the heat on social media. During an Instagram live session on Tuesday, November 28, Bella said only brands with deep pockets can afford her and Sheggz together as a pair. This comment didn’t land well on the internet, with some people suggesting they’re not the power couple they think they are.

The back-and-forth got us thinking about some of our Nollywood faves who’d have “run the world” if they’d ended up as life partners.

Who would dare cross a Nnayi Sacrifice x Mama G duo? Their wish would have to be your command anytime they show up.

    Ramsey Nouah and Genevieve

    Image: Youth Village Nigeria

You had to be there in the early 2000s to see the chokehold this pair had on Nigerians with movies like My Love, Love Boat, Power of Love, Battle Line and Honey. Their union would rival all the first couples of Aso Rock.

    Iya Gbonkan and Abija Wara

We don’t know what you think this article is about, but spiritual power is on the table. It doesn’t get fiercer than these two, who are only the most popular onscreen villains of Yoruba Nollywood.

    Eucharia Anunobi and Alex Usifo

Just imagine this couple at the helm of Nigeria’s affairs. They only need to give one of their iconic facial expressions, and world leaders would do our bidding.

    Pete Edochie and Clarion Chukwura

Picture this: They show up at a crowded government office with no security. Edochie in his Isiagu, and Clarion with those oversized sunglasses so dark you can see your reflection in them. Are you getting the picture, or should I continue?

    RMD and Shaffy Bello

As individuals, they have an insane class and the pizzaz that holds everyone to ransom when they step into the room. Now, think of the effect when that’s combined. Beyonce and Jay might have to resign.

    Chiwetalu Agu and Camilla Mberekpe

These ones will bend anybody into submission with juju. You will bow for the result whether you like it or not.

  • Everything You Need to Know About “Olóládé” the Series

Everything You Need to Know About “Olóládé” the Series

Nollywood has been exceptionally consistent with Netflix releases in 2023, with productions like Black Book and Jagun-Jagun making real impact. And another TV series, Olóládé (meaning “the wealthy has come”), is set to join the lineup.

We bring you exclusive info from TNC Africa on everything to know about Olóládé.

    Six-part series

Olóládé, a six-part series, follows two friends — Shina, a secondary school teacher, and Lateef, an auto-mechanic — who run into sudden wealth, which they use to build a betting business. Then the consequences find them.

    PulseNg

Inspired by an old Yorùbá classic?

Olóládé the series brings to mind an old Yorùbá Nollywood film by Ebun Oloyede’s Olaiya Films, titled Olóládé Mr Money, a dramatic horror about a man who did rituals to become wealthy. Whether the series borrows from the old Yorùbá film or not, its production team has collectively described it as a “homage to Nollywood TV classics”.

    Language

While Yorùbá is the primary language, the writing team — headed by Lani Aisida (Skinny Girl in Transit, Rumour Has It) — brings us a relatable script that permeates ethnicity and tongues. According to the director, Adeniyi Joseph Omobulejo (TAJ), “When you watch Olóládé, you will feel a lot of nostalgia. It’s good storytelling at its core. You can expect to see relatable, well-developed characters and drama unfolding, which for me, is what good storytelling should be”.

    TNC Africa

The production company behind Olóládé was co-founded by Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, Daniel Aideyan and Olawale Adetula — the series’ executive producers — in 2021 to focus on making original African TV series. So far, they’ve produced A Little Black Book and My Name Is A-zed.

    Production team

Olawale Adetula, Adaugo “Falcon” Uzoma and Dele Ishola are the producers of Olóládé. The consultant producer is Leye Fabusoro, with Adeniyi Joseph-Omobulejo (TAJ) as the director.

    TV cast

The cast list boasts veteran actors like Femi Adebayo, Kunle Idowu (Frank Donga), Mercy Aigbe, Jaiye Kuti, Mide-Funmi Martins and Liz Da-Silva. It also features emerging Nollywood stars like Adebowale Adebayo (Mr. Macaroni), Oluwatobi Olubiyi (Agba) and Debby Felix.

    Principal photography

Principal photography commenced in the first week of January 2021 in Lagos, Nigeria, and was completed in March 2021.

Olóládé the series will make its debut on Netflix on November 24, 2023.

  • This December in Nollywood Movies

    This December in Nollywood Movies

It seems Nollywood filmmakers are determined to eat our money this December 2023, and honestly, we aren’t complaining. The titles and trailers are giving and might be worth spending on cinema tickets.

If you watched and loved titles like Battle on Buka Street, Obara M and God Calling, the same actors and directors have more in store for you during the holidays.

    “A Tribe Called Judah”

Following the mixed reactions that trailed Funke Akindele’s last release, She Must Be Obeyed, the actress makes a return to the big screen in December with A Tribe Called Judah.

Akindele takes the director’s chair for the film which follows the story of a mother and her boys. When the mother falls ill, the boys devise a means to save her — rob a mall. Their operation is foiled when they meet real armed robbers at the mall.

A Tribe Called Judah stars Funke Akindele, Pere, Tobi Makinde, Timini Egbuson and Olumide Oworu, among others. It’s out in cinemas on December 15.

    “Ada Omo Daddy”

Mercy Aigbe is launching her first cinema project with this title, Ada Omo Daddy, and we can’t wait to see what she serves on screen. Little is known about the project, but according to Mercy, “It’s a movie that attempts to unify our cultures, regardless of our differences. It is a beautiful family-oriented drama that will have lots of comedy as well as some valuable lessons.” Fingers crossed.
Ada Omo Daddy’s all-star cast features Sola Sobowale, Fred Amata, Dele Odule, Carol King and Omowunmi Dada, among others. It’s out in cinemas on December 15.

    “Malaika”

    https://youtu.be/zbEOMAxSlpE?si=73ruwjMihLKEVEmQ

Ijakumo actress, Toyin Abraham, is gearing up for a major cinema release of the year, and we’re sat. This time around, the actress’ offering is Malaika, Yoruba for “angel”.

Directed by Steve Sodiya, Malaika is about a woman who struggles with infertility in her marriage and goes on a spiritual journey to find a solution.

Malaika stars Toyin Abraham, Odunlade Adekola, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett and Emeka Ike, among others. It’s out in cinemas on December 22.

    “Breath of Life”

    This December in Nollywood Movies

Following rave reviews at the recently concluded Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), BB Sasore’s Breath of Life finally comes to the general public.

The inspirational title tells the story of a man of God who loses everything and becomes a shadow of his former self. However, an encounter with a young man would change the course of his life.

Breath of Life stars Wale Ojo, Eku Edewor, Genoveva Umeh and Chimezie Imo, among others. It drops on Prime Video on December 15.

    “Afamefuna”

    https://youtu.be/nPjdAq7dCHQ?si=ubJeZUWjxuq7m889

Obara M director, Kayode Kasum, takes a spot in the loaded December line-up with his latest offering, Afamefuna: A Nwa-Boi Story.

The title also screened at AFRIFF. It dives into the Igbo apprenticeship system and how it plays a significant role in wealth building. Afamefuna stars Kanayo O. Kanayo, Segun Arinze, Paul Nnadiekwe and Noble Igwe, among others. It hits the cinemas on December 1.

    “Double Dekoi”

When King of Boys actress, Sola Sobowale and “Nnayi Sacrifice”, Kanayo O. Kanayo, link up for a crime thriller, you know you’re in for an eventful ride.

Double Dekoi is about a young lady who infiltrates a criminal organisation led by ruthless bosses, in a bid to free her brother of murder charges. The movie also stars Yinka Quadri, Ronke Odusanya and Hilda Dokubo. It’s out in cinemas on December 1.

  • Money Is the Root of Chaos In “Bank Alert”

Money Is the Root of Chaos In “Bank Alert”

Upcoming Nollywood  film Bank Alert has been trending since its trailer was released on November 13, 2023. The funny dialogue and the sight of the OG actors in the trailer has also helped build anticipation.

But while we wait for the official release, we’ve looked around and found a few interesting details about the film.

    Bank Alert

From the title we can tell one of its central themes will be about money. Its plot centres on a struggling family man, Sammy, who suddenly receives a whopping sum of ₦500m in his bank account. This man has no idea who the sender is but goes ahead to spend the money lavishly and puts his loved ones in harm’s way.

    Comedy-drama

According to the producer, this is a comic film. Imagine the hilariousness when Okey Bakassi makes a statement about money ritual and Kanayo in a scene that has actor Kanayo O. Kanayo, the man he referenced in it.

But Bank Alert is also a crime film, and it follows how the people of the underworld try to recover their ₦500 million.

    Director and producer

The director of Bank Alert is Akay Mason. His previous directorial projects include Elevator Baby and Love In Pandemic. Wingonia Ikpi serves as the producer, collaborating with Sterling Bank and production companies, FilmOne Studio, Trino Motion Pictures and Tribal Marks Media.

    Okey Bakassi

Aside from playing the lead actor, Okey Bakassi is also the co-producer of Bank Alert. Although not his first acting gig, this film is his first big-screen project.

    Veteran cast

This film will give us a line-up of OGs actors like Taiwo Hassan (AKA Ogogo), Tina Mba, Kanayo O. Kanayo and Kate Henshaw. We’re in for a stellar performance.

    Cinema date

The cinema release date is set for November 24th, 2023. In my opinion, this is a smart move from the team — it’s a day before salaries begin hitting bank accounts.

  • 2023 Nollywood Characters That’ll Make Interesting Halloween Costumes

2023 Nollywood Characters That’ll Make Interesting Halloween Costumes

If you’re thinking about joining the Nigerian Halloween train this year, you don’t need think too hard about what to wear. We’ve done the work and you can now express yourself, recreating some Nollywood characters we’ve on screen this year.

    Check for your style below.

    Agemo (Jagun Jagun)

Agemo is easily one of the most popular film characters we’ve seen in Nollywood this year. Agemo can appear and disappear. Although she’s a scary killing machine, Agemo is almost as fast as Flash. She moves swiftly in her local floating adire and ofi with a mask that has lasers as eyes.

    Asabi (Ijakumo)

This film received different reactions, but one can argue that its protagonist, Asabi, was a unique character. Her outfit choice is why she’s also the most outstanding character in the film. Asabi wore only black gowns and carried a dread longer than the 3MB.

To be honest, wearing this as your Halloween costume will likely slow down your movement due to the long dread that’ll drag after you, but maybe you’re built differently. Who knows?

    Ogundiji (Jagun Jagun)

Say what you want about Ogundiji, but that man had the flyest fits; from his war apparels, the plain fur coats and caps to the bead accessories — no warlord or jazz man has this man’s steeze.

    Kareem (Gangs of Lagos)

Get your danshiki dress, dark shades, panama hat, one gold chain and two gold rings and you’re set. Thing is, not everyone will pull off Kazeem’s look without breaking a sweat, especially when you factor in his scary aura and personality. But it’d be dope if his character was recreated for Halloween.

    Okalandu (NKEMAKONAM)

It’s very likely people will run away or avoid you if you’re in the Nkemakonam deity costume. For starters, it looks like a masquerade regalia. Consider this costume as repping your long-gone ancestors.

    Monsters (Ile Owo)

If this is your Halloween costume, know that you’re going out as something closer to the devil and other monstrous creatures with horns. Don’t forget that an underwear is the only piece of clothing this one has, and crawling is also part of the personality.

    Girl gang (Chronicles)

This is easy to recreate. Sew a big choir robe, buy a ski mask, and a toy gun. Your “holy armed robber” brand is set.

The people of Iyi (Mami Wata)

Getting your face painted in white and making hairstyles that look like satellites or any object of your choice may make you look like a stranger in a foreign land. But at least, you’ll look more African than others. Can’t hate this.

Yejide and Awele (Battle on Buka Street)

This is an extra for you. You can run with any of the two rival characters here. Or better still, hold your best friend and act like competitors throughout your Halloween party. But make sure to carry your big pot, a bag of yam flour, a turning rod and other identifiers of a Buka boss madam.

You made it here, my friend, Now can you get your Burning Ram Meat Festival ticket? November 11th is closer than you think o.

  • 7 Scary Nollywood Horror Films to See this Halloween

7 Scary Nollywood Horror Films to See this Halloween

Before someone picks up koboko to remind me that Nigeria is already hell and nothing concerns us with Halloween, I get it. But, I still think we can enjoy things without being too deep or critical of them.

That’s why I have this list of scary Nigerian movies to watch here while they trick-and-treat abroad. Are you sat? Let’s dig.

    Koto Aiye (1989)

This movie by late film producer Yekini Ajileye was released in 1989, and it’s hands down one of the scariest occult titles in Nigeria. Evil witches terrorised a village so much that there was little the good witches could do.

When a prophecy came about a saviour coming in the form of a baby, the evil witches — including the king’s first wife— devised plans to scatter everything. Even the king, Oba Adedapo, wasn’t spared — man carried a protruding stomach for a long time because the witches housed their birds inside him. Mad.

The movie is in two parts. You have a long, thrilling night ahead of you.

    https://youtu.be/r4CBIRnUzvs?feature=shared

    Ologbo Iya Agba

This title in English translates to “grandma’s cat.” This film was once the hottest thing on the street, and it was hard to find a copy at film rentals because people had rented it out. I remember how we all became scared of older women who kept cats as pets.

    You should see this.

    Nneka the Pretty Serpent (1994)

This film came out when VHS was still the reigning champ. Although the title called Nneka a serpent, she could also turn into a cat. Nneka is a spirit-possessed lady who goes around town tormenting promiscuous married men and their families— total menace; even prayers hardly worked against her.

I recommend that the relationship people watch this with their partner to subtly let them know the consequences of cheating on the loves of their lives.

    Living in Bondage (1992)

Before you press play on this film, its title makes you whisper that bondage isn’t your portion. Living In Bondage, the OG version, follows the story of a money-ritual cult that demands the loved ones of its members as sacrifices to keep their wealth flowing. Andy, the main character, was even told to blind and castrate himself to appease his wife’s ghost that’s haunting him up and down.

Did this man receive help or partially kill himself to escape his ghost-wife? Find out in this and part 2.

    Hex (2015)

This Clarence Peters’ film, divided into four episodes, follows the story of five young Nigerians who accidentally hit a drunken man on the road, finished him off with a car jack and dumped him in the lagoon.

None of these guys had rest of mind since the incident, but that was nothing compared to the fright their victim’s ghost gave them before finally killing them gruesomely. Play Hex and watch it pull your wig back, leaving you on the edge of your seat.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOVA6Tzkoy4&list=PLRDkog-uSpvcv1uufuIC0oCBixGSd-RbW

    Eran Iya Oshogbo (1999)

I don’t know why Nollywood makes humans possess animals and vice versa in its horror flicks. Still, this movie, Eran Iya Osogbo (the goat of the woman from Osogbo), isn’t an exception. In it, you’ll see how a woman loved her goat more than her neighbours and everyone else.

This goat of hers was a riot in the whole town. It was so powerful you could take a bite of your shawarma, and it’d land in the goat’s mouth. Eran Iya Oshogbo is also in two parts and will leave your mouth wide open after you’ve exclaimed “omo” like 100 times.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1xiIHkYuxc&pp=ygUPZXJhbiBpeWEgb3NvZ2Jv

    Karishika (1996)

Before I heard that people could turn into an orange or a Health 5 football, I saw a woman give birth to a yam tuber in Karishika. Straight out of the household of Lucifer, Karishika and her demonic colleagues went on a rampage to cause people to sin and lead them to the kingdom of hell. This film has the right amount of Nigerian spookiness.

Karishika was so powerful that Falz made a song and remix, begging God to protect him from her.

After Halloween, come hang out at the biggest meat and grill festival in Lagos on November 11th. Cop your ticket asap.

  • What We Know About Mr Ibu’s Health and How You Can Help

What We Know About Mr Ibu’s Health and How You Can Help

Veteran Nollywood actor Mr Ibu recently released a video seeking financial aid for an undisclosed ailment. However, the family recently announced that his leg was amputated to keep him alive.

Here’s all we know about the situation so far.

What We Know About Mr Ibu’s Health and How You Can Help

    What is happening?

Nigerian actor, John Okafor, AKA Mr Ibu is currently on admission at a medical hospital in Lagos.

On Wednesday, October 18, Mr Ibu released a video on his official Instagram page soliciting financial aid for a medical condition.  He revealed that doctors had informed him of the possibility of getting one of his legs amputated.

A history of Mr Ibu’s condition

While the actor’s recent medical situation has stirred concern from fans and fellow Nigerians, this is not the first time he has been ill.

Mr Ibu’s adopted daughter, Lady Jasmine, first drew attention to the actor’s health in March 2022 after he landed in the hospital.

Although the exact diagnosis was not revealed to the public, the actor was on admitted for several days at the Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre in Abuja.

At the time, industry colleagues, including Monalisa Chinda, who was the PRO of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) paid a courtesy visit to the actor at the hospital.

In an interview after he was discharged, Mr Ibu claimed he was poisoned, hence his admission to the hospital.

“I was poisoned, but not at an entertainment event in Abuja. I was poisoned in my home town, and then I journeyed to Abuja, where the poison affected me and grounded me. At a point, I almost gave up, but God said, ‘No, you are not going to give up. And here I am. I have been discharged.’”

The actor was admitted again by May 2022, spending his wedding anniversary with his wife at the hospital. However, by June 2022, he was out of the hospital and started showing signs of recovery.

Mr Ibu resumed on movie sets, started making more appearances on social media and even featured in comedy skits.

In September 2023, the actor celebrated his 40 years on screen with many colleagues and well-wishers joining him to mark the occasion. Unfortunately, his health seemed to take another hit shortly after the event.

    What are colleagues doing?

Shortly after his call for help, several colleagues in the entertainment industry have used their platforms to amplify Mr Ibu’s plight.

Veteran actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo released a video urging fellow industry colleagues and kindhearted Nigerians to donate towards Mr Ibu’s medical aid.

He, however, clamped down on author, Reno Omokri, who had shared a tweet emphasising Ibu’s support of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the general elections. Omokri claimed the actor joined others to raise funds for Obi as such the politician should return the favour.

Meanwhile, celebrities like Davido, Tunde Ednut, and Paul Okoye amongst others have rallied support for the ailing actor and promised to do their bit.

    Mr Ibu’s leg amputated

On November 5, 2023, Mr Ibu’s adopted daughter, Lady Jasmine, shared an update about his health on behalf of the family.

According to her, the actor successfully had seven surgeries. Unfortunately, one of his legs had to be amputated.

“As of 1 p.m., noon today, Daddy has gone through 7 successful surgeries but to keep him alive and increase his chances of recovery one of his legs had to be amputated. This development has been hard on us all but we’ve had to accept it as Daddy’s new reality to keep him alive.”

What can you do to help?

In a video, Mr Ibu explained the doctors have informed him of the possibility of amputation if efforts to remedy his condition prove futile. The actor pleaded with members of the public to support him with prayers.

Now that his leg has been amputated, the family is still calling on kindhearted Nigerians for financial support.

“Please we are still soliciting support from well-meaning Nigerians at this stage,” the actor’s daughter wrote.

The actor’s bank account details have been made available for members of the public willing to donate towards his well-being. A direct mobile number has also been provided for members of the public.
