After three years of production, a Nigerian animated movie, The Secret Princess, produced by Segun Williams, is set to be released in cinemas this June.
The Secret Princess is about how a king’s efforts towards having a male heir leads to the switching of two new-born babies.
It explores a missing princess’s experience while living in the jungle with her mother and speaking to animals.
Playing the lead character in this movie is DJ Cuppy, with supporting roles by both local and international actors, including Desmond Elliot.
The movie, adapted from a book of the same title addresses issues such as discrimination against male and female children.
Not every time bash Nollywood, sometimes give them props.
Because for every not-so-great movie and confusing translation…
People like Tunde Kelani, Stephanie Linus, Emem Isong and Kunle Afolayan come through with awesome movies that make us fall in love with Nollywood all over again.
After blessing us with The Figurine and the award winning October 1, Kunle Afolayan has made a new movie, titled The CEO, and it first premiered on a flight from Lagos to Paris.
One of the actors, Haitian Jimmy Jean Louise, (aka the hot guy from Phat Girls) who was in Nigeria for the official premiere of the movie couldn’t stop gushing about Nollywood and Nigeria.
According to him, Nigeria is one of Africa’s leading countries with the most potential and power. He even added that Nollywood has a better representation of African cinema. Nice!
The CEO movie should be a mind-blowing movie, anyway, we expect nothing short of perfection from Kunle Afolayan.
The movie which also features Angelique Kidjo, is about a group of top executives of a multi-national company who begin to die mysteriously during a short business trip. Watch the movie trailer here.
Making a movie in Nigeria is serious business. You really don’t need a lot of experience to make one. If you’ve ever wondered how to make one we made a guide for you.
1. First of all, make sure your movie poster tells the whole story
Don’t leave any chance to the viewers to guess how the movie goes, if possible narrate the film on the poster.
2. Quickly make a movie about anything that happens in the news
Be fast, be the first person to make it so you can make enough money.
3. Make sure you include an intro scene irrelevant to the movie
Intro scene should be about a plane flying or a farm in the village. Anything works.
4. Include a 10 minute scene of cars driving from one end of Lagos to the other
Maybe to show off the beautiful potholes and traffic sellers, always include funny background music too.
5. Put like ten passerby scenes and three scenes with a car reversing
Because you must include all your family members in the cast. Charity begins at home.
6. Whoever is singing the theme music must narrate the whole movie with it
If you don’t listen well, you an’t understand the movie.
7. There must be a gateman scene
No matter what the movies is about make sure you add that scene. The gateman must also try to be funny
8. Carry only one or two bags when you are moving out
Even if you have been living there for the past 20 years.
9. Find a way to include a mother-in-law in the movie plot
Yes you guessed it. She must be wicked too.
10. Remind your actors and actresses to use funny accents
Mix British and American with a little Jamaican accent in one sentence for the international community.
11. Somebody must be poisoned
“After the poison is added to the food, taste it. Okay? Action!”
12. You must have a housegirl
This is one important rule. Never forget, because who will break a plate and get punished or sleep with oga.
13. If your movie does not have witchcraft and babalawos you haven’t started
Witches must wear black or red, voodoo priests must paint one eye with chalk. Be consistent.
14. Your actors must shout, if you don’t shout you are not acting well
Maybe the microphone is always bad, we don’t understand.
15. There has to be a slap scene
At least one epic slap must happen please. It spices up the movie. (The person receiving the slap must say “did you slap me?”).
16. Give an illiterate the subtitles to do
It costs too much to pay a professional to do it, and you must save money. If the viewers don’t like it, they will manage it like that.
17. Now divide the storyline into four parts
Parts I-IV. You can give the titles different names so people would know. Make enough money on a story that should last 10 minutes.
18. Don’t forget the most important part of the movie ending
It’s about time Nigerians start appreciating the beauty of our culture. Nigerians continue to slay at home and especially abroad, why? Because even in the midst of so much wahala, greatness still runs in our blood. But let’s just get to the gist.
This British comedienne and actress just got featured in her first Nollywood movie.
For those of you who don’t know her, she’s Claire Edun aka Oyinbo Princess, famous for her pidgin speaking skills.
Claire who was born and raised in the UK fell in love with Nigeria after listening to several Nigerian songs.
The former air hostess is married to a Nigerian man, Richard Edun, and is popular for her comedy videos.
Her ability to speak pidgin landed her a role in a Nollywood movie titled ATM, produced by Lancelot Imaseun.
It’s great to see a foreigner take so much interest in Nigerian culture. But let’s remember one or two things…
When Nigerians speak English with an American or British accent, people say they’re forming.
Speaking pidgin on a normal day is razz but when a foreigner speaks pidgin, Nigerians be like…
As Nigerians, we need to learn to love our culture and stop waiting for others to do the appreciation for us.
Batman Vs Superman was one of the most anticipated movies of 2016 even though some people don’t like it, but that’s not why we’re here.
We saw the movie and many scenes reminded us of our dear Nollywood, here are some of them:
1. When Batman’s parents died in the beginning…
You know how someone’s parents have to die at the beginning of almost every Nollywood movie and they get maltreated by their step mothers.
2. When Batman kept having these nightmares about beasts and flying demons.
Just like the ‘birds’ in Nollywood that only fly at night or appear in people’s dreams.
3. Although Lois Lane was annoying for most of the movie…
She reminded us of the oversabi girlfriend that always finds a way to get in the middle whenever wahala happens.
4. Batman changed his mind on killing Superman when he found out their mothers bore the same name, Martha.
We can imagine him seeing Ngozi Ezeonu’s face flashing before his eyes when he heard “take care of Martha”.
5. At the end of the movie, Superman was ‘killed’ and Batman ended the scene with this line that made us sigh, “I failed him when he was alive, I won’t fail him in death”.
This is perfectly Mike Ezuruonye, with tears streaming down his eyes, resolving to not fail his step brother in death.
When you think Sansa Stark, you can’t help but think ‘SUFFERING’. Seriously, when your childhood crush kills your father, it can only go downhill from there. So, who better to play the frustrated Stark than the ever-crying Nkiru Sylvanus?
2. Patience Ozokwor as Cersei Lannister
We all know that Cersei Lannister is next-level wicked and no Nollywood actor can play wickedly protective mother quite like Patience Ozokwor. So, why mess with a formula that works?
3. Osita Iheme as Tyrion Lannister
What Tyrion lacks in size he makes up for in serious wit, and how many Nollywood actors can claim to have played as many wickedly clever characters as Osita Iheme. It really doesn’t hurt that they are about the same height.
4. Pete Edochie as Tywin Lannister
Tywin Lannister was the wealthiest man in the seven kingdoms, and one of the wisest. The only difference we can spot between him and Pete Edochie’s typical characters is that while Tywin was just the hand to the king, Pete Edochie would actually be the king.
5. O.C. Ukeje as Jon Snow
Jon Snow (everyone’s favorite character) is the pretty loverboy with a lot to prove to his family, if you can’t see the charming O.C Ukeje playing this role, we don’t know for you again.
6. Emeka Ike as Joffrey Baratheon
Joffrey Baratheon was probably the most hated character in television history. He was cowardly, annoying and spoilt, three traits Emeka Ike would really have no trouble playing.
7. Van Vicker as Jaime Lannister
Jaime Lannister is brave, handsome and more than a little twisted (*side-eye’s incest*). He isn’t meant to be as likable as he is but he pulls it off, and that is very Van Vicker.
8. Kanayo O. Kanayo as Stannis Baratheon
Last time we saw Stannis Baratheon he was sacrificing his daughter to the Lord of Light for a chance at the Iron Throne. If that doesn’t scream Kanyo O. Kanayo to you. you really should watch more Nollywood movies.
9. Nse Ikpe-Etim as Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys Targaryen is equal parts strong and compassionate, and we can’t think of anyone more suited to the title of “Mother of Dragons” than the enchanting Nse Ikpe-Etim.
10. Majid Michel as Petyr Baelish
Petyr Baelish is insanely ambitious and extremely cunning, willing to do anything for power. If you’ve ever watched a movie with Majid Michel, you’d know he is the perfect fit.
11. Mercy Johnson as Lysa Arryn
Lysa Arryn was the overlooked sister of Catelyn Stark and the tremendous Mercy Johson has built a formidable career on playing the ugly duckling.
12. John Okafor as Lord Varys
Lord Varys is extremely sneaky and occasionally hilarious not unlike John Okafor. It doesn’t hurt that they both have the same size potbellies.
13. Joseph Benjamin as Robb Stark
We didn’t realize how much we really liked Robb Stark until he was gone and we can’t think of a better actor to capture his quiet intensity.
14. Olu Jacobs as Ned Stark
Ned Stark’s nobility might have been his undoing in the end but that trait is exactly what Olu Jacobs brings to every character he plays.
15. Joke Sylva as Catelyn Stark
Catelyn Stark was the strong-willed wife of Ned Stark. So, it’s only right we cast the supremely-talented real life wife of Olu Jacobs.
16. Jim Iyke as Ramsay Bolton
Which other Nollywood actor can you picture torturing their prisoner into submission beside the sly looking Jim Iyke?
