Nollywood couples | Zikoko!
  • We Ranked the Rich Boyfriends of Nollywood, From “God, When?” to “God Forbid”

Nollywood found the rich boyfriend trope and held on to its ṣokoto like their lives depended on it. Honestly, we understand because the way these men spend money on their babes?

If we weren’t too busy shouting, “God, when?” we’d be plotting how to break their happy homes.

Mide in “Skinny Girl in Transit”

We know he owns the company Tiwa works at, but at first, we couldn’t see how long his money was because of how casually he spent it. Now, our eyes are wide open. $100 bundles? Shares in Tesla and Apple? In this economy of constant inflation and ₦1,442 to $1?

God-when-o-meter: We’ve been shouting, “God, when?” since he started dating Tiwa. Now that he’s dropping dollar bundles and shares in multinational companies on her head? God will soon have to beg us to hush.

    George in “Fine Wine”

Somebody decided to give us RMD as an older lover, and every day, we send good vibes their way. George came into Kaima’s life and treated her like a princess. Shopping sprees, helped her get retained at her job, protected her from her idiot ex? The man thought she hung the moon and stars and did everything to make sure she knew it too.

God-when-o-meter: Make a “God, when?” button and watch us press it hard.

    Aminu in “The Men’s Club”

The man referred to himself as a forest because his money is just that long. He bought a house on the spot because the landlord was disturbing the love of his life. He flew from the island to the mainland because he couldn’t care to be stuck in Lagos traffic. Environmental activists might not like him very much and Tumini might be acting like his money is the sole cause of her unhappiness, but that’s okay because we like him very much.

    Aminu, call us.

God-when-o-meter: We’ll take everything he has to offer, including his “Strong head. I don’t need help” behaviour.

    Adil in “Big Love”

Adil wasn’t just in love with Adina, he loved her son too and was ready to do anything for them. Including using his parents connections to get her a new job, move them both to Lagos and beat the shit out of his cousin for cussing her out.

God-when-o-meter: His family loved her, he loved her, they all came together to spoil her and her child silly. Take away his foolish cousin, and we’re in it for life.

Deji in “The Royal Hibiscus Hotel”

He bought her parents’ hotel for her. Granted, that was always his plan, but he met her, fell in love with her, and decided the only thing he wants is her love and happiness. And if it cost him a couple million naira, then so be it.

God-when-o-meter: God, when? But also God, abeg, because imagine the love of your life having a friend and business partner like Martin.

    Behold our Valentine Special

We brought back three couples we interviewed in 2019 to share how their relationships have evolved in the last five years. This is the first episode:

Nonso from “The Wedding Party 2”

Please, the man proposed by mistake and still went along with it. He even planned a destination wedding all because their families were fighting and he didn’t want anyone/thing to stress his baby. Nonso was a man in love; if his baby wanted something, she got it.

God-when-o-meter: God, when? As long as he takes out the mistaken proposal bit because, why?

Ahanna in “Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story”

If your man isn’t willing to elevate himself from the shackles of poverty by robbing a few rich people and his friends then using the money to buy a big ass farm in Abuja to live there with you, is it really love?

God-when-o-meter: God, abeg. Doing crime with the love of your life is great, but imagine dying because his best friend’s sister, who he was cheating on you with, has come back for revenge?

    Buba from “Wrath and Revenge”

We can’t deny how long Buba’s money and connections are. The man was willing and ready to do anything to protect Alicia from his stupid cousin and make sure she was good. Even though, now that we think about it, he was really the weapon fashioned against her, and the reason she needed to be protected in the first place.

God-when-o-meter: God, abeg. God forbid. God, not in this life or the next. Did you see what he almost did to her? Him and his salt and pepper beard can geddifok.

  • These Nollywood Ships Deserved to Sail

Nollywood has given us iconic couples, from Dozie and Dunni of “The Wedding Party” to Louis and Lola of “The Men’s Club”. But every now and then, they remind us that real life exists and love and chemistry aren’t always enough.

Obalola and Teni in Gangs of Lagos

They loved each other from childhood and looked like they were about to have a genuine, cute, lovey-dovey relationship. We were rooting for them, but apparently, if your daddy kills your potential man’s fathers, you’re no longer viable for love.

    Kopiko and Oscar in Passport

Past the snarky remarks and quick jabs, Kopiko and Oscar seemed to understand and see each other. They had great chemistry and banter, and we won’t have minded if they had decided to explore it,.

Sarah and Panam in The House of Secrets

All these two wanted was to continue loving each other and their unborn child, but Nigeria happened to them. Panam’s life was cut short, and Sarah was swept into the messiest mess Nollywood has given us this year.

    Akin and Goldie in Brotherhood

Something about Goldie dying in Akin’s arms on their last score feels incredibly cruel. All they needed was a couple more minutes to ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after, but that oversabi police officer decided to put an end to their Bonnie and Clyde romance by ending Goldie.

Uche and Toyin  in a Sunday Affair

These women were good on their own, yes they were friends but they had such a great friendship, everyone started shipping them together. Sunday didn’t need to involve himself in their lives, all he had to do was stay away and let their love blossom into whatever they wanted it to be. But men will always find their way into women’s business.

Donna and Xavier in A Simple Lie

They were still in love with each other, and everyone they got into a relationship with suffered for it. There’s also the fact that Donna’s husband was the scum of the earth. She deserved a lot better than that abusive man.

Samuel and Rekya in Man of God

They were both badly behaved, but somehow they understood each other and didn’t judge their shortcomings. The only time Samuel could be himself was when he was around Rekya, and if he had enough self-awareness he’d have known that leaving her wasn’t the wisest thing to do.

Ahanna and Adaugo in Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story

While we understand that Ahanna did Amara dirty, and she was a woman scorned, she could have dealt with him without involving Adaugo. Ahanna and Adaugo looked like they really loved each other, and were cute AF together. Amara should have found other ways to deal with Ahanna’s treachery, ways that didn’t involve killing the mother of his child.

  • Who Else Thought These Nollywood Couples Were Actually Together?

Nollywood has given us a lot of iconic pairings over the years, but some actors do their job so well on screen, we find it hard to separate play play from real life. Have you ever looked at a Nollywood pairing and felt deep down that they were an actual couple? We’ve been there too. Here’s a list of some old Nollywood couples that were so good, we thought they were married or dating in real life.

Stella Damasus and Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD)

These two were always married or about to be married in all their films. Look at the material: In When God Says Yes, they were a couple looking for a kidney for RMD; In Engagement Night, she slept with his best friend but they still somehow found their way back to each other; and let’s not forget the wild ass To Rise Again where RMD was Stella Damasus’ ghost baby daddy. It’s not our fault we thought they were together.

    Rita Dominic and Jim Iyke

Rumour has it that these two were a thing at one point, but are we really surprised? With her big ass afros and his VPN-acquired Ameritish accent, Jim Iyke and Rita Dominic were the OG Bonnie and Clyde of old Nollywood. One minute they’re sipping cold juice by the beach, and the next thing you know, they’re arguing, with Rita in her thigh-high boots and Jim in his bandanas. We stan a chaotic couple.

    Genevieve Nnaji and Ramsey Noah

First off, can we get into Genevieve’s tiara in this picture? Yes, sis, Disney princesses are shaking. Ramsey Noah and Genevieve were the couple to beat back in the day. They’ve dated and married each other onscreen so many times we’ve lost count. Power of Love, Butterfly, Honey, The Break-Up, Pain and Gain, Super Love or the one where she was a village Cinderella and he was the crown prince. These two had so much chemistry together, we were rooting for them to become a thing.

    Ini Edo and Muna Obiekwe

Before Muna Obiekwe made the controversial Men in Love, he was one of Nollywood’s most-in-demand lover boys. While he shared the screen and his fictional heart with everyone from Genevieve Nnaji to Oge Okoye, it was his films with Ini Edo that had us screaming “God, when abeg?”. Once you saw Ini Edo in a campus setting with spaghetti straps and excess lipgloss, you immediately knew that Muna Obiekwe would pop up at some point. He fought Jim Iyke for her heart in The Cat and went against Stephanie Okereke and her cult group in Beautiful Faces. Can your man fight?

    Genevieve and Emeka Ike

Back then, if Genevieve was not acting opposite Ramsey Noah, best believe she was serving melanated couple goals alongside Emeka Ike. He was her knight in shining armour in For Better for Worse and Pain and Gain, showed her pepper in Not Man Enough and let’s not forget when he blinded and married her in Two Together. Through all of this, they made us root for them and honestly, we’re still shocked they weren’t a thing. Na wa o.

    Van Vicker and Nadia Buari

This is not the time for jollof or Shatta Wale wars, we all know that once upon a time, Nollywood and Ghollywood were one wood. Following the success of Beyonncé the President’s Daughter, Nadia and Van became the biggest Ghanaian exports to Nigeria. They were so big, Nollywood had them shooting village movies in the East. Why did these two work so well together? Well, we all thought they were dating. Look at the image above and tell us you didn’t see it back then.

    Stella Damasus and Desmond Elliot

They didn’t do much together, but these two were iconic AF. Just look at the poster for Missing Angel, the film where he was the angel of death sent to collect her soul, but somehow ended up getting trapped by her snail. Interesting times. There was also Behind Closed Doors and a couple of others. Long story short, we thought they were a thing at some point but apparently, we were clowns.
