  • Why Is BLACKPINK Headlining Coachella 2023?

Short answer: Because they’re THAT girl.

    Source: WeHeartIt

Longer answer: Because they’re THAT girl, and Coachella is lucky they said yes.

For those who still don’t get it, let me take you on an unsolicited trip that shows why BLACKPINK are the first Asians to headline Coachella.

    The “Hot Debut” of 2016

It all started with a performance of their two debut singles, Boombayah and Whistle, at SBS Inkigayo in August 2016. Rosé laid on her back and slid through the other members’ legs across the stage floor, Lisa simulated a loose machine gun with her arms, Jennie jumped on the other three and they carried her forward, all while singing live. They won their first Inkigayo award two weeks later.

    The “Product Launch” debut

Wait, no. The real story begins when BLACKPINK’s agency, YG Entertainment (AKA Psy’s former agency), introduced them to the people of South Korea like they were Steve Jobs and BLACKPINK was a new iPhone edition. BLACKPINK is better, obvi.

    The first music festival performance

Five months after their hot debut, SBS invited the girls to perform at their end-of-year music festival, Gayo Daejun (or “Battle of the Bands”), the biggest in Korea. BLACKPINK brought their live singing, rapping and energetic dancing to the now iconic performance.

    The cover performance of 2017

BLACKPINK performed their cover of Miguel’s Sure Thing at another SBS TV music show, and it remains an iconic moment for global BLINKS (BLACKPINK fans) today. The Pinks sang live, completely in English, pulled off some pretty cool harmonies, and Jennie and Lisa rapped bars they wrote themselves. Even Nicki Minaj would approve of this performance.

A live performance with 300m+ views

2018 marked BLACKPINK’s transition into global success — they released their game-changing hit song, Ddu-ddu ddu-du, in June, and Jennie dropped her record-breaking first solo, SOLO, in November — so their return to SBS Gayo Daejun in December was next-level and the perfect closing to a great year. The performance currently has over 300 million views on YouTube.

While Burna Boy fans would remember Coachella 2019 for his rant about font size, BLINKs know it as the year BLACKPINK became the first K-pop act to perform there. Nothing gave us higher dopamine spikes than hearing the live organs, followed by Jennie singing “Yeah yeah yeah” and Lisa screaming “BLACKPINK IN YOUR AREA”, as the girls started their performance of Kill This Love.

A dance practice video with over 1 billion (with a “b”) views

How You Like That’s official music video broke three Guinness World Records when it dropped in 2020, but this article is about performances. So instead, let’s talk about how BLACKPINK’s dance practice for the song now has 1.3 billion views (100 million more views than the actual music video).

The Show: their virtual live concert

When BLACKPINK decided to drop their debut album in the middle of the 2020 pandemic, every fan’s immediate question was, “What the hell, YG?” From making BLINKs wait four years for The Album (yes, that’s the name of the album) to keeping BLACKPINK from performing at most South Korean shows, YG is the bane of the fandom’s existence.

But in December 2020, BLACKPINK announced The Show — a virtual live show to perform all their new songs — partnering with YouTube to sell a premium subscription no one still wants.

YouTube: Pay us for premium treatment

    The world:

The Show was a huge success though, selling W11.7 billion ($10.5 million) worth of tickets. Most importantly, they gave Ddu-du ddu-du, the song that put them on the map in 2018, the awe-inspiring performance she deserved.

The Virtual: their award-winning metaverse performances

BLACKPINK aren’t just elite performers in the physical world, their avatars run the metaverse too. In July 2022, YG announced The Virtual, a series of in-game shows on PUBG Mobile. The ten-day “tour” was free and exclusive to game users, recording 12.5 million viewers and earning BLACKPINK the Best Metaverse Performance Award at the 2022 MTV VMAs.

The Pink Venom special stage performance of 2022

BLACKPINK made us wait two years before they dropped their sophomore project, BORN PINK, in 2022. And its title track, Pink Venom, broke records as usual. But it’s their performance of the song that stands out most about it. This is best showcased in the Grammy Awards-level special stage video the group posted on their YouTube channel.

Performing with a royal orchestra for a president

    Source: Yahoo News

You know you’ve made it when you kick off a new year performing in front of a foreign president. The French First Lady called them for the 2023 edition of her annual Le Gala des Pièces Jaunes charity event in Paris. And BLACKPINK performed their new songs, Shut Down and Pink Venom, with a famous classical cellist, violinist and an orchestra.

Do we even have to say everything about the performance was iconic?

    And finally, Coachella 2023

BLACKPINK is on their second world tour till July 2023, and Jisoo just released her debut solo work, but that didn’t stop them from booking a gig as high-profile as Coachella 2023 Headline Act. They have a headline slot at Hyde Park British Summer Time (BST) festival lined up afterward too.

If “booked and busy” had an alias, it would be this K-pop group. But even the members are shocked by how far they’ve come. According to them, they only dreamt of attending Coachella as part of the audience, not headlining it. They promise to repay our love with constant improvement and perform each stage “as if it’s their last”.

We have no choice but to stan their grade of humility and success for clear skin.

  • How K-Pop Fans Can Reduce the Anxiety This Election Period

As a Nigerian, everything must feel a little too much right now, and your anxiety might be over the roof. If you’re a K-pop fan, here are seven things you can do to reduce the anxiety.

    Listen to your favourite song

It can be an old one from when you first started stanning your faves or that one song that’s always ringing in your ear. Listen to it as many times as it’ll take for you to start dancing a little, so you know you’re getting relief.

Watch your favourite episodes of their reality TV shows

Nothing gives you more joy than seeing your faves being their silliest, funniest selves. Laugh at them attempting to cook or cheating in games. Watch as many times as needed.

    Reenact your favourite music video

You’ve been lying to yourself for months that you’ll learn the dances anyway. Time to cross it off your bucket list. All that sweating around will have you forgetting all your problems for a while at least, and you get to learn something new

Go on a marathon of your favourite band

Think of it as a listening party of all your favourite songs by them. You’re helping them get more streams, and it’s sparking joy. A win is a win.

    Cook a Korean dish

Nothing too difficult or with ingredients that are too hard to find. Simple rice, cucumber kimchi and beef will do the trick. For bonus points, you can pretend you’re eating the meal with your faves.

    Stalk your bias

Be more intentional about it than normal. Make a collage of your best pictures, imagine dyeing your hair the same colour as theirs, just savour it.

    Shop for merch

Even if you don’t have the money to buy them yet just looking at them will fill your heart with so much happiness. But if you have money, buy something. Waiting for a package is an exciting feeling.

  • Important K-World Kims You Should Know by Now

I’ll be first to admit I underestimated just how many Kims exist in the K-pop world. Not to be mistaken for relatives of Kim Jong-un, the supreme leader of North Korea, here are all the Kims any true K-stan knows and loves.

    Kim Yujin

If you’re a big fan of fantasy movies and saw the American TV show, Lost, growing up, then you’ve seen this actress before. She’s most popular for her role in Money Heist though.

    Kim Bum

Probably one of the most underrated South Korean actors, he’s also a singer, dancer and model. You may know him from Boys Over Flower, Tale of the Nine-Tailed, Ghost Doctor or 18 Again.

    Kim Taeri

Our baby-faced fave is the actress who had a breakout role in the award-winning movie, The Handmaiden, and the heart-breaking 2022 high school drama, Twenty-five Twenty-one.

    Kim Go Eun

The queen of tears. Are you even a K-drama fan if you don’t know Go Eun from Cheese in the Trap, Goblin, and, more recently, Little Women?

    Kim Seokjin

He’s the oldest member and lead vocalist of BTS, currently serving in the South Korean army.

    Kim Jongin

Probably one of the best dancers in K-pop, EXO-Ls will never forget him in his iconic red suit from that Love Shot fam cam. The rapper and model is a member of the 3rd-gen group, EXO.

    Kim Jisoo

She’s the lead vocalist of the global girl group, BLACKPINK, who made her debut as an actress in the romantic K-drama, Snowdrop. She’s also the group’s “visual”; BLINKs call her “Miss Korea” for perfectly meeting the Korean beauty standard.

    Kim Namjoon

If you don’t know who this is, we should actually fight you. Popularly known as RM (Rap Monster), Namjoon is the leader and main rapper of BTS.

    Kim Min Kyu

Everyone’s current fave, the South Korean actor, went viral for his role as the second male lead in Business Proposal. Rumour has it that he was a former trainee set to debut with SEVENTEEN, but we still get to see his idol side in his new drama, The Heavenly Idol.

    Kim Jennie

The other piece of the BLACKPINK Kim duo, Jennie is the main rapper of the global girl group. But like most K-pop idols, her acting career is brewing as she’s set to star in The Weeknd’s drama series, The Idol.

    Kim Doyoung

The main vocalist of NCT 127 who sang the OSTs for popular dramas like Soundtrack#1, Tale of Nokdu, Yumi’s Cells and School 2017. He also starred as the lead in To X Who Doesn’t Love Me

    Kim Taehyung

Popularly known as V, Kim Taehyung is a member of BTS. With his unique baritone voice and pretty face, he’s managed to steal all our hearts. He also starred in the popular K-drama, Hwarang.

    Kim Mingyu

One of the good K-pop rappers, he’s also a model (best in taking boyfriend pictures) and can cook pretty well. This SEVENTEEN member is multitalented.

    Kim Chaewon

She’s the leader of the viral 4th-gen girl group, LE SSERAFIM, but OG K-pop stans know her from her days in IZ*ONE and the talent survival show, Produce 48.

    Kim Seungmin

You know him as the lead vocalist of the boy group, Stray Kids, but Stays know he’s secretly the lead rapper. You’ve probably seen him in some of your favourite K-dramas too.

QUIZ: Which Lee Jae-wook Character Would Be Your Perfect Partner?

  • We Promise You’ve Heard More Than 11 K-Pop Songs Without Knowing

K-pop has been in our faces for a long time, so it’s impossible to say you’ve not heard any K-pop songs. Whether you listened on purpose or not, it’s the perfect earworm that finds a way to you, especially if you’re a big movie watcher, gamer, or you’re just chronically online.

You might not be a stan yet, but if you can identify all 11 songs in this article, my brother in Christ, you’re one deliberate listen away from being a K-pop fan.

    Fantastic Baby – BIGBANG

This song appeared on Glee and in the Pitch Perfect 2 trailer. If you watched both, there’s no way “Wow. Fantastic baby” wasn’t stuck in your head for days. Give it a proper listen.

RELATED: QUIZ: Only K-Pop Fans Know Who Sang These Iconic Lyrics

As If It’s Your Last – BLACKPINK

Remember that scene in Justice League, where Batman is just sitting in the Flash’s liar like he paid the rent? I’ve always found it funny that BLACKPINK’s As if It’s Your Last was playing on a desktop monitor in the background. Yeah, that’s why you know that chorus.

    Kill This Love – BLACKPINK

Every other day, someone on the internet remembers how cute the To All The Boys I’ve Ever Loved movies were. I always fight the urge to tell them that BLACKPINK was all over the OST. This is probably the most popular one, and it’s from the scene where Lara Jean tries to be a supportive girlfriend. It’s her GRWM montage.

Hangover by PSY ft Snoop Dogg

You probably heard this song in the first Black Panther movie and bop-ed to it even though you couldn’t sing along. Come on, give it a second listen. Watch your brain remember how it felt to listen to it the first time. If you don’t remember it, ask us for your data money back.

    I Am The Best – 2NE1

For fans of dance movies where the mean character does these super complicated routines, you probably heard 2NE1’s I Am The Best in Work It. Or you were to busy staring at Keiynan Lonsdale to hear it.

ZimZalabim and Russian Roulette – Red Velvet

Where are all my adults who watch kid’s cartoons? If you saw Trolls 2, you’d remember the scene where the main trolls kept meeting other trolls with different music tastes. ZimZalabim and Russian Roulette probably got stuck in your head for days afterwards.

    https://youtu.be/9h8ZL3xRHsQ

    Friends – BTS

Was this a super short music cameo? Yes, but how can you say you didn’t notice Friends playing in the background? Chelsea, come on now. It’s BTS.

    Dynamite – BTS

We can pretend you know half the lyrics of this song from Clifford The Big Red Dog, but we both know you don’t even know where you heard it the first time. It’s okay. You like K-pop, and nobody will beat you for that.

How You Like That – BLACKPINK

I’m actually convinced that when two or three people are gathered, one person knows how to sing How You Like That. My source? “I no go lie give you”. I probably heard it first on Hotel Transylvania, and TikTok didn’t help either.

    Euphoria – BTS

Remember that cute scene on Euphoria, where Kat and Ethan finally admit to liking each other, and the background turns purple, and Euphoria by BTS plays loudly in the background? You didn’t miss it. In fact, fill in the blank: “You are the cause of my…” Exactly. You know the song.

    Lucifer – SHINee

Where are the fans of the Lucifer series? Season three, episode 13, starts with Lucifer fighting a Korean drug dealing group to the same-title song by SHINee.

    Bonus if you use TikTok

You know at least six of these catchy songs: Zoo – NCT x Aespa, DDU-DU DDU-DU – BLACKPINK, Money – Lisa, The Feels – TWICE, Butter – BTS, Christmas EveL – Stray Kids, Loco – Itzy, Love Shot – EXO, ASAP– StayC and Attention – NewJeans.

Nobody will judge you for even knowing the choreography thanks to TikTok. Of course, you fell victim to good music. Now, go and listen on purpose this time.

  • The Ultimate K-Pop Beginner Playlist From One K-Pop Newbie to Another

One of my biggest personality traits, outside of not drinking beer, was my “I don’t listen to K-pop” line. But now, I’m here to testify that I’ve seen the light and K-pop slaps with vim.

One thing I’ve realised since I started listening to K-pop at the end of 2022 is, from R&B to punk rock, it’s more than just one genre. While I’m still finding my footing (you won’t see me arguing with stan groups on Twitter, yet), I’ve compiled a list of ten songs that are sure to seduce even the hardest “I don’t listen to K-pop” believers out there.

    Listen and be blessed.

    Singularity — BTS

If someone had told me earlier that I’d be having deep thoughts about fornication while listening to BTS, I’d have called them a detty liar living a fake life. But here we are today. While I’d heard BTS songs like Butter and Dynamite (against my will), nothing prepared me for the delicious sexiness that’s Singularity. Even though I literally have no idea what BTS is talking about, this seductive slow banger has me weak in the knees for real.

You’ll like it if you like: Tay Iwar, Daniel Caesar and Omah Lay

    Hype Boy — NewJeans

NewJeans’ Hype Boy is about to be one of my biggest obsessions in 2023, and I’m not sorry. Easily finding that sweet spot between bubblegum pop and R&B bounce, Hype Boy is the kind of song that makes you want to throw your head back and forth, summon your inner white girl hair-flipping dance moves. Hype Boy has transformed me from a Conrad to a Britney.

You’ll like it if you like: Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Tinashe.

    Replay — SHINee

Remember when pop boy bands were a thing, with teenage boys wearing matching outfits and break dancing under the rain? Well, if you miss the good old days, let me introduce you to SHINee (This spelling is stressing me out because I’m tempted to call them Shin-Nayy). Even though I’d never heard Replay before 2023, the 2008 song sounds so familiar because it has all the fun, snappy elements that made songs from that era slap really hard.

You’ll like it if you like: N’sync, Backstreet Boys and B2K

    Ddu-Du Ddu-du — BLACKPINK

BLACKPINK is one of the biggest K-Pop exports, with a long list of fans and collaborations with everyone from Lady Gaga to Selena Gomez. But while the Instagram and TikTok viral hit How You Like That had everyone in a chokehold during the panini, it’s their 2018 track, DDU-DU DDU-DU that recently caught my attention. One thing about these girls is they’ll give you EDM, rap, R&B and a pop ballad all in one track without it sounding chaotic. I don’t know how they do it, but I totally get the hype now.

You’ll like it if you like: Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift (Reputation Era).

    MOVE — TAEMIN

If you watched the video for SHINee’s Replay, you might recognise TAEMIN as one of the singers from that group (Don’t worry, I didn’t immediately know this, so you’ll be fine too). Just like Zayn Malik left One Direction and created an almost perfect R&B/Pop record with Mind of Mine, TAEMIN’s MOVE is a significant departure from his boy band sound. He seems to have traded toasting his lover for downright dirty seduction, and I’m here for it. Once again, I don’t know what he’s saying, but if I were his love interest, I’d start undressing ASAP.

You’ll like it if you like: The Weeknd, CKay and Amaarae

ALSO READ: These 9 Alternative Korean Musicians Will Elevate Your Playlist

    Gotta Go — CHUNG HA

One thing about me is I’ll always stan the pop girlies, whether they’re from South Korea, London, South Africa or Italy. Gotta Go by CHUNG HA is pop perfection, and I fell in love with it from my first listen. While I assumed the “gotta go” part was about ditching a relationship, I fell deeper in love when I learnt that the lyrics are about leaving a party early — anyone who knows me will tell you I’m always asking, “When are we going home?”

You’ll like it if you like: Tyla, Charli XCX and Rita Ora

    Euphoria — Jungkook (BTS)

Before anyone comes for me about putting two songs from BTS on the list because they’re the most popular group, let me remind you that Euphoria is  technically a Jungkook song, so it deserves to be on its own. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. I heard this song for the first time on, wait for it… the TV show, Euphoria. Jungkook’s vocals are ethereal and make me feel like I’m floating. Euphoria might be the first K-pop song I ever liked. Chef’s kiss over and over again.

You’ll like it if you like: Khalid, Justin Bieber (Purpose era) and Troye Sivan

    Any Song — Zico

While I’d heard part of Zico’s Any Song on TikTok back in 2020, thanks to a popular dance challenge during the kpandemic, listening to it again — and in full — recently made me like it even more. Any Song is the perfect feel-good song that’ll have you bobbing your head from left to right no matter how messed up your mood is. The next time we talk about songs with crack in them, Zico’s Any Song has to be on the list.

You’ll like it if you like: Shawn Mendes, Anderson.Paak and Rema

    Still Life — RM

RM’s album, Indigo is the only K-pop album I’ve listened to from start to finish — the guy had me at Erykah Badu and Anderson.Paak, for god sake. While it was hard to pick one song from the album, Still Life makes me feel good every time I listen. Anderson.Paak screaming, “I’m still life!” with the crowd background vocals echoing the same lyrics reminds me of a fun day at the beach, and honestly, who doesn’t love a fun day at the beach?

You’ll like it if you like: LADIPOE, Suté and PsychoYP

    Raingurl — Yaeji

Yaeji’s Raingurl sounds like the soundtrack to a night out you can’t remember. You’ve been left sore and with a raging headache, but you comfort yourself with the belief that it means you had a crazy good time. Raingurl is the perfect EDM club song, and it always makes me feel like increasing my heart rate. If you enjoy EDM benders like Sweat-It-Out in Lagos, then this is for you.

You’ll like it if you like: Oontz-Oontz music of any kind, to be honest.

BTS becomes the 1st male artist to surpass 70 million YouTube subscribers

My boys need to win an award for constantly breaking records. They hit the 70 million milestone on their BANGTANTV YouTube channel, which is wild because it’s not the channel that has their music videos. Their power! The only other artist to hit this milestone was BLACKPINK in November 2021. Well done ARMY and BTS.

It doesn’t get more “God when?” than this for fans of actress, Gong Hyo Jin, and singer, Kevin Oh. The singer took to his Instagram to share the news of their upcoming marriage. He also shared the sheet music for a song he composed and Hyo Jin wrote the lyrics to.

For those who aren’t fans, now’s a good time to re-watch Hyo Jin’s dramas and fall in love with her. Start with From Pasta, The Greatest Love, It’s Okay, That’s Love, The Producers and When The Camellia Blooms, and you’re in for a treat.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo says goodbye for now

Our beloved show came to a wrap with its final episode on Thursday, August 18th, 2022. While we’re sad to see it go and wondering what we’ll do with our lives every Wednesday and Thursday from now on, let’s rejoice for the cute ending we deserved.

We wait patiently for a new season in 2024. Woo supremacy forever.

    Alchemy of Souls returns

For fans of Alchemy of Souls, this week might as well be Christmas after missing Mu-deok and Jang-Uk on our screens for 13 whole days. While we have four more episodes to go, we’re glad none of the good guys has died yet and excited about the drama we’ll witness on Saturday. If Naksu doesn’t fight somebody and win, we riot. Enjoy this picture of our favourite couple.

Girls’ Generation debuts at billboards hot trending songs top 5

Girls’ Generation fans did not come to play with their queens’ return. Girls Generation’s Forever 1 album debuts its titular lead single at #5, marking the group’s first appearance on the chart in five years. When you’re big, you’re big, and not even a scandal can stop you.

    All your faves are sick

Not every time support with streams, sometimes support your faves with prayers. Kang Daniel and Dino, from SEVENTEEN, tested positive for Covid-19, and Sunoo from ENHYPEN has health issues. Nothing will happen to them, but you people should sometimes be praying.

    Hyun Bin is coming back!

It might not be for a drama, but the cast of Confidential Assignment 2: International will appear on the game show, The Game Caterers, and I’m more than excited to see Hyun Bin act goofy with his fellow cast members. This is his first TV appearance since he married Son Ye-jin, and while we understand their need to disappear for a bit, we’re just excited to see him again.

    Are you ready for BLACKPINK?

BLACKPINK’s music video for their song, Pink Venom, blew my mind. That clip of JISOO playing the Geomungo now lives rent-free in my head. The visuals are stunning as usual, and I just know the song is about to become an anthem. I’m ready to scream-sing it every day until people are sick of me.

  • BLACKPINK Isn’t Overrated, and We Have Proof

BLACKPINK are undeniably one of the biggest acts in K-Pop today, and many platforms have tagged them the biggest girl group in the world. Made up of four members — Jisoo, Jennie, Rose and Lisa — the group debuted in 2016 with the single album Square One. And they’ve been dedicated to spoiling us with good music ever since.

When they’re not busy releasing bangers, their favourite pastime is breaking records thanks to their Blinks unwavering support. BLACKPINK dropped their long-awaited single, PINK VENOM, this morning, and we just know it’ll break even more records. From being the first to reach 75 million subscribers on Youtube to making Billboard’s Hot 100 list as a non-US act, here are some they’ve broken so far.

First K-Pop act to headline Coachella

BLACKPINK was the first K-Pop act to headline the prestigious annual music and arts festival in 2019. It’s safe to say this skyrocketed their global popularity and opened doors to many western collaborations including Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Cardi B and Lady Gaga.

First K-Pop girl group to chart on the Billboard Hot 100

Their collaboration with Lady Gaga on Sour Candy in 2020, earned them a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 at #33, making them the highest-charting girl group on the most notable singles chart in the US. They actually broke a record their own song, DDU-DU DDU-DU, set when it debuted and peaked at #55 in 2018, a huge feat for a non-US single with no features.

Highest-charting K-Pop girl group on the Billboard Hot 100

Well, later in 2020, they broke their own record again by peaking at #13 with their single, Ice Cream, featuring Selena Gomez. They’re not just the first K-Pop girl group to enter the chart but the current highest-charting.

First K-Pop group to hit a billion views on YouTube

BLACKPINK was the first K-Pop group to hit the “one billion views” mark with the music video of their single, DDU-DU DDU-DU. It’s been four years, and this video is still amassing massive views as it’s currently at 1.9 billion views. Fun fact: former label mate, PSY, was the first-ever to hit YouTube’s “Billion Views” Club with Gangnam Style.

First K-Pop girl group to be certified by the RIAA

DDU-DU DDU-DU was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2019, making BLACKPINK the first K-Pop girl group to be certified by the RIAA.

    Forbes most influential Korean celebrities

It’s one thing for you to be big and another for Forbes to recognise you’re big. The girls forever sets trends, so it was no shock when Forbes dubbed them “the most influential celebrities of 2019”.

    Guinness Book of World Records

The music video for their song, How You Like That, holds the Guinness world record for the “most viewed music video by a Korean act in 24 hours”. Their live rendition of the song was also acclaimed as one of the most viewed live videos in 2020. In total, they’ve broken three records, all of which were previously held by K-Pop boy band, BTS.

Most viewed live in YouTube history

After they released the song How You Like That, the girls performed it on a live YouTube Broadcast to 1.66 million viewers. It‘s still the most viewed live show in YouTube history. If it’s easy, your faves should do it.

Best in topping the iTunes chart

When they released Kill This Love in 2019, fans showed their support for the quartet by making sure it charted #3 on the iTunes chart. Which made the girls the first K-Pop girl group to reach the iTunes top 5 on a song’s release day. Their first studio album, The Album, which dropped the next year, was also the first of a k-Pop girl group to surpass one million pre-orders.

    More Billboard records

BLACKPINK was the first girl group to top Billboard’s Artist 100, and the first K-Pop girl group to enter and top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.

    Another YouTube record

They’re the most subscribed-to musical acts on the platform, with over 76 million subscribers. There’s nothing these girls can’t do, and with the release of their second studio album, BORN PINK, next month [September 2022], we can only expect more record-breaking feats.

Most followed K-Pop idols on Instagram

The four members of BLACKPINK are also the first, second, third and fourth most-followed Korean celebrities on Instagram. And that’s not the only record the members have broken as soloists.

  • Girls’ Generations’ Cultural Influence on K-Pop Girl Groups Is on Full Display in Their “FOREVER 1” Comeback

In the early 2000s, K-pop began to get international appeal. Girls’ Generation (also called SNSD) debuted in 2007 and were a massive part of the second generation of K-pop idols who rose to fame.

Girls’ Generation burst into the limelight 15 years ago, made timeless music and were dubbed the most influential K-pop girl group of all time. They could have rested and allowed their legacy to live on, but they just released their first album together on the August 5th 2022 for the first time in five years, and every song is, well, a back-to-back hit.

While we aren’t pitching bad bitches against each other, it’s important to respect the nine-woman band who paved the way for groups like Blackpink, Twice and Red Velvet. They were the first Asian girl group to achieve 100 million views in five different music videos. Who was doing it like them?

The women: Taeyeon, Tiffany, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Yoona, Sooyoung, Seohyun and Jessica who left in 2014, had OG fans bending themselves into pretzels trying to dance the choreography of their first single Into the New World years after its release. When it came to choreography, you could always count on Girls’ Generation to serve.

RELATED: How to Spot a K-Pop Fan in Nigeria

Girls’ Generation were (and still are) the queens of iconic K-pop. From Gee,  which I’m convinced was divinely inspired. Then there was I Got a Boy, The Boys, Oh, Mr Taxi, and Run Devil, Run, each song with its unique visuals and concepts. They made music that stuck in your head for years. They were always experimenting and trying new genres, which is why their newly released album “FOREVER 1” hits.

Not every K-pop group can blend genres like that in one song and get away with it, but they make it work because when you’re big, you’re big.

Their songs remain some of K-pop group’s most iconic and recognisable songs. Their willingness to evolve shows that nothing can diminish the existing impact Girls’ Generation has had on K-Pop.

Why does FOREVER 1 hit differently?

FOREVER 1 is SNSD’s seventh studio album (and first as an entire group in five years). The whole album feels nostalgic — they aren’t trying to do anything they haven’t already done before, and you can tell that they had fun while making those songs. It’s also the first album where the members actively participated in the production and songwriting.

There are ten tracks on the album, each a celebration of their growth. The album is a fusion of different genres, from their classic bubblegum pop sound in FOREVER 1, then there’s RnB with Seventeen and  Villan with electronic pop. You can see how each person’s style has grown stronger and more mature with each song.

Each song takes you on a journey and leaves you giddy with excitement. This album is perfect for those moments when life feels too good.

Forever 1 retained the old Girls’ Generation while showing us that if they wanted to make music for this age, they could, and would still absolutely dominate. I don’t think any of their works will be topping this for a long time. It’s exciting to witness them come this far, and I’m excited for what they produce next.

  • My Favourite K-Pop Collaborations With Western Artists

When BTS announced their collaboration with Snoop Dogg, I was a little shocked. But then again, my boys have range, so I know it’ll slap. And to be fair, it’s not the first unlikely pairing to give us great songs. Here are some of the best K-pop and western collaborations of all time.

    BTS x EVERYBODY

I’m sorry, was I supposed to choose one when they’re all good? Come on. It’s not my fault everyone and their daddies want to sing with BTS. They’ve collaborated with Halsey, Lauv, Juice WRLD, Charli XCX, Megan Thee Stallion, Coldplay and Steve Aoki (thrice), and all those songs slapped.

RELATED: We’re Still Not Over BTS “Proof of Inspiration” Videos

BLACKPINK x all the pop girlies

I love when talent recognises talent, which has been the case with every BLACKPINK collaboration. Imagine mixing BLACKPINK’s hyper pop energy with Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Cardi B or Selena Gomez, E for Energy. Nobody asked me, but my favourite is still Kiss And Make Up with Dua Lipa, and now the song will be stuck in my head for another two weeks.

    Jason Derulo x LAY x NCT 127

As a former fan of Jason Derulo, I scratched my head when I first heard about this collaboration because, how would it work? But Jason Derulo, Lay Zhang (formally of EXO-M) and NCT 127 created Let’s Shut up & Dance, and I, too, wanted to dance. Jason and NCT127 are huge on dance choreography, and the music video made sure we remembered.

    Monsta X and Steve Aoki

One thing about Steve Aoki, he’ll collaboration with K-Pop idols. Play It Cool is the ‌bop you listen to on those days when life feels extra happy for no reason. That’s until you watch the music video and MONSTA X’s always sleek choreography draws out beats you didn’t hear the first time. What a time to be alive.

    G-DRAGON x Missy Elliott

Do you know how iconic you have to be to sing with hip-hop icon Missy Elliott? This collaboration happened in 2013, but it deserves mention because it was so iconic. G-DRAGON’s new rap with that old-school Missy Elliot vibe on Niliria is a cultural reset, a serve and a moment in K-pop hall of fame.

Chanyeol x Marshmello x Tinashe x Far East Movement

Freal Luv is a fusion of R&B, electro and pop vibes, and if you know ball, that’s a top-tier combination. EXO’s Chanyeol’s English and Korean rap verse mixed with Tinashe’s sensual R&B and Marshmello doing his electro-pop thing, whew.

    It’s a 10/10 for me.

    PSY and Snoop Dogg

No K-Pop collaboration list can be complete without mentioning PSY. The mix of English and Korean was such a smooth transition in their rap, and it makes sense PSY’s usually chaotic energy matched Snoop’s. I’m not the only one who thought this collaboration was brilliant, as it was used in 2018’s Black Panther.

  • Did BTS Just Breakup? 7 Nigerians Share How They Feel About It

The K-pop boy band BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, recently celebrated their ninth year of making music, with fans on a live dinner. At this virtual event, they announced they would take a break from the boy band to focus on solo projects.

The news sent shock waves through the heart of their ever-loyal ARMY, and of course, we had to interview Nigerian ARMY to find out how they’re taking the news. Here’s what they had to say:

    Zia

Watching the live dinner at first, there was a problem with the English translation. It said they were going on a hiatus, so I freaked out. I’ve been through group hiatuses that led to disbandment before. I panicked for like 30 minutes, telling myself I couldn’t go through it again.

Ever since I discovered BTS, I’ve never been without them. Even when they weren’t dropping albums, there was always some kind of content from them. They’d drop snippets on Twitter, pictures on IG, and they had a regular variety show, RUN BTS. A hiatus meant we wouldn’t be getting any content.

BTS is what’s keeping me sane in this country, so my sanity was hanging by a thread. But after the company released the speech on Weverse, I realised it was a mistranslation. They would just be working on solo projects from now on.

I understand how it feels to want to explore new things. They’ve been making music together for nine-plus years. My boys deserve to try new things as individuals, and I know their friendship will be stronger because of this. I’ll miss them releasing group projects. But I know they still love us, themselves and making music. They’ll always be BTS. They’re just leaving the nest a little, to do something different. And I’m okay with that. All I want in this life is to see them in concert once, at least.

    Jungkook’s girlfriend

I cried when I first heard the news because they were crying during the live dinner. After watching it and reading the official statement, I cried again. It hit me that it wasn’t even because BTS wouldn’t release music together in a while — they have a comprehensive discography — but because they were scared to tell us they wanted to take a break to do things for themselves.

It was devastating to hear at first, but they recently released an anthology album and some of their unreleased demos, which is a huge deal. I’ll just immerse myself in that until they come back. Plus, even though they won’t be releasing music as a group, they’ll do it individually, allowing me to experience each member outside BTS. They’ve had some solo projects during the nine years they’ve been together, but this will be different, and I’m looking forward to it. I have mixed feelings, but I’m mostly happy and excited about this new experience.

    Rosie

I feel okay about it. BTS needs a break, and I can’t wait for their solo album. I think it’s great that they’re doing this because they’ve been releasing music consistently for years, not that I’m complaining. If you look at Blackpink now, they are musicians who do other things that interest them, like acting. So BTS should try different things too, and when they return, they’ll be stronger. I just want them to do solo projects and enjoy it. It would be great to see V act again because he did such an excellent job in Hwarang. I know some ARMY are unhappy about this, which is sad because they should be supporting them.

    Tobi

Honestly, I’m glad it’s not an actual hiatus and more like a break. BTS won’t release music as a group for a while, but they’ll have their solo projects and continue to appear as a group on their variety show, Run BTS. Knowing we’ll still have content makes me happy, tbh.

In my K-pop group chat, twisting the boy’s words and claiming it was disbandment news. Those with sense know better than to make a fuss about this. I’ve been waiting for this. They’ve worked hard as a team because it was their only option. Now that they’ve achieved all their dreams as a group, they deserve to fulfil their individual dreams.

    Kosi

I’m a relatively new fan of BTS. I’m still listening to many of their old songs, so sometimes, I wonder if I count as an ARMY. But watching the live dinner and listening to them cry as they talked about how they were scared to do this made me sad. It also made me realise I’d chosen the right group to stan because, look at them thinking of us first, instead of themselves. ARMY has been using the hashtag #BTSItsOkayToRest since the news came out, and I support it wholeheartedly.

I discovered BTS in the thick of the pandemic, and their music felt like a hug. Like an older brother patting your back all the time. So imagine listening to them talk about wanting to take a break in 2020 after the ON era. Still, they felt responsible for being there to help their ARMY heal during the pandemic. It had me in tears. We don’t deserve them.

They just released an anthology album with more songs and demos, so we’ll be fed for a while. I’m excited to catch up on everything they’ve been doing and all the new projects they’ll release individually. Not to speak for such a vast fandom, but I’m pretty sure we aren’t going anywhere. We are here to stay. And like they said in Butter, “Got ARMY right behind us when we say so”. There’s no lie there, borahe

    Dunni

Omo, I heard the news about the hiatus on Twitter because I didn’t watch the live dinner to the end — please, my attention span isn’t that good. I was confused because I didn’t know what to think. I saw lots of TikToks about how they would take a break to relax. It was giving vacation. Then, I heard they were taking a break as a group but will be releasing solo works and Run BTS. It made me sad to see some people react as if their careers have ended.

This is why I can’t be a K-pop idol, me that I like to sleep. If I say I want to take a break and people start crying, I will just change it for them. This break is not a forever thing. They will return. They’re just tired, and rest is okay. I’d rather they took a proper break to rest for like two months because they deserve it. But I’m happy for them and excited for their solo projects sha. Meanwhile, I want ARMY to stop depending on them for now and rely on Jesus. Please, let them rest.

    Prodigal ARMY

I think the hiatus is necessary, but maybe because I’m a prodigal stan. After all, if it were Stray Kids or NCT, I would end up at the bridge. I watched the live video, and Namjoon clearly explained that it wouldn’t be time off from music, just time off as a group. I think it makes sense. Because while they all have a few solo works, they haven’t explored their individual colours enough.

I think it’s important for people to know the artist Suga or Jin and not just their positions in the band. Just like Kai from EXO, whose identity was the hot dancer or second maknae kid. When Kai released his solo album, we finally got to see his view on art. He had so much to say, and it ended up being beautiful.

I’m happy BTS will still feature in each other’s work at the end of the day. All I can do is look forward to J-Hope’s solo work and trust in leader RM’s words that they’ll be back together as the beloved BTS.

  • Popular K-Pop Fandoms And How to Identify Them

Behind every big K-pop idol or group is a fandom dedicated to supporting them through thick and thin. And there are many K-pop groups and artists, so of course, there are a lot of fandoms. The most popular one is undoubtedly ARMY — the Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth — a group of fans dedicated to BTS. But for this article, we want to talk about other K-pop fandoms that deserve recognition.

As soon as an artist or group debuts, their management releases information about the fandom name and, for some of them, custom lightsticks. Each fandom’s name is how the K-pop artist or group refers to their fans and how the fans refer to themselves. The fandoms wave their different light sticks during concerts and use them to tell themselves apart from the various other fandoms gathered in the same place.

The difference between fandoms and regular fans is that they go the extra mile to show their support for an artist or group they love. They buy albums, stream songs religiously, buy merch, host charities, celebrate their idol’s birthdays, you name it.

After all my talk talk, I don’t know for you if you still don’t get what a fandom is. Sha, here are some you should know:

    BLINK – Blackpink

BLINK is a mix of BLACK and PINK — the name is supposed to represent Blackpink’s girl crush (the black) and bubblegum pop (the pink) concept. BLINKs are so good at streaming and raising numbers, and are loyal AF to Blackpink, that every song the group drops breaks at least one YouTube views record. They don’t get music as often as most, but quality over quantity, I guess.

RELATED: K-pop Stans in Nigeria Can Relate to These Struggles

    Once – TWICE

The easiest way to explain their name is that if fans can show love to the group once, the girls will repay their support “twice”. If that is not the cutest thing. They are usually very friendly, but you hardly meet a Once that likes Blackpink. They are adorable and can be very stylish. We should all aspire to be them.

    ReVeluv – Red Velvet

Their name combines the first two letters of “Red” and “Velvet”. The “luv” is just a cute way of spelling “love”. Most ReVeluv just minds their business and don’t get into fandom fights. They also tend to be multi-stans because it’s not a crime to like more than one group. Sha, don’t make a nasty comment about Irene, or you will hear shege.

    EXO-L – EXO

EXO-L is simply just the name of the group plus “L”, which means “love”. These guys are unproblematic, but you would be too if you had that much money to buy albums. They had moments when two of their Idols were in the news for negative reasons, but they stayed strong and are in their tenth year now. They’re primarily quiet these days. I love their energy.

    NCTzen – NCT

NCTzen means a citizen of NCT, and NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology. It’s not hard to spot NCTzens because they are very loud and chaotic. As large as the group is, NCTzens still manage to stan all 23 of them. Yes, 23 members. Talk about wholesome. They make the best memes about NCT, so we forgive them for their noise-making. They are also the most spoiled fandom because they get so much content regularly.

RELATED: QUIZ: Only Kpop Stans Can Make it to the End of This Quiz

MOA – TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT)

MOA means “Moments of Alwaysness”, which is supposed to describe how the fandom makes TXT’s dreams come true. As you can tell, these guys are the softest and are super protective towards TXT, especially their maknae, Huening Kai. A lot of them are also stan BTS because they are under the same company. They are probably one of the most friendly K-pop fandoms.

    Stay – Stray Kids

Stray Kids’ fans give them a reason to “stay”. Get it? They took the “r” out of “Stray”, leaving them with “Stay”. If you meet a Stay, and they don’t lowkey have a Converse obsession, you’re in the wrong place. One thing about them, they will make Hyunjin, their visual member, trend for no reason. Sundays are sacred to Stays because Leader Chan will always go live, surgery or storm. At least, they are unproblematic… for now.

    CARAT – SEVENTEEN

At the end of one of SEVENTEEN’s concerts, their Leader S.Coups said, “We have an announcement. You guys made us shine so bright. So you guys are now going to be our CARAT”. These guys are sweet to each other and every other fandom. They support and hype their group, but you won’t see them getting into fights.

    MIDZY – ITZY

There’s no drama to how they got their name. MIDZY means “trust”, so fans trust ITZY and ITZY trust MIDZY back. For a fandom that doesn’t seem to have a personality yet, they still somehow manage to get the numbers ITZY needs, and that’s all that matters.

    V.I.P – BIGBANG

Before ARMY and EXO-L, V.I.P.s. were the biggest fandoms. Even though BIGBANG separated for a while and only had a comeback this year (2022), V.I.Ps are still worth mentioning because imagine a fandom worse than ARMY? BIGBANG played a significant role in making K-pop international, and V.I.Ps played an essential role in pushing their music. This fandom also doesn’t treat their idols as sacred as most fandoms. If you find someone trolling BIGBANG, it’s most likely a stan, and it’s all in good humour.

  • We’re Still Not Over BTS “Proof of Inspiration” Videos

I’m anticipating the magical experience that’ll be the BTS Proof album release tomorrow. It’s exciting because each member had to pick two songs, and while Proof mixes all our favourite old BTS songs, we still get three new ones. I wanted to remind myself why each BTS member chose their two songs for the album, so I rewatched the BTS Proof of Inspiration videos — the seven-part short video series named after each band member — for the millionth time. To help juggle your memory, here’s a reminder of each member’s thought process behind their song choice.

    Proof of V

In Proof of V, he spoke about choosing Singularity because of his struggles, eventual acceptance of his idol self, V and the person he is to his friends and family, Taeheyung. He also chose 00:00 because it signifies a new day void of all the problems from the day before. Who doesn’t need a reset like that? Everyone, say thank you, V!

RELATED: QUIZ: Only Kpop Stans Can Make it to the End of This Quiz

    Proof of Jin

Jin chose to include Moon because just like Earth and the moon are inseparable, that’s how inseparable he is from BTS Army, and he did not lie. For Jamais vu, Jin mentioned a part of the song about how when he gets exhausted, all he has to think about is the BTS fandom, Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth (ARMY), and he feels better. It’s great that he feels this way, especially since they regularly save our lives. Please, who is cutting onions?

    Proof of Jimin

Jimin wanted Filter and Friends in the album to show how he might have come across as colourless instead of colourful in a bid to show different sides of himself. But Jimin knows that ARMY will always be here to remind him about his essence and keep him centred. Ah yes, cue the waterworks.

    Proof of Jung Kook

Jung Kook added Euphoria and Dimple to the album, which is fitting because of his explanation. Jung Kook spoke about how much he loves to sing and dance and how glad he gets when people react positively to his performances. His Proof is in our smiles and joy; how can we not stan?

    Proof of RM

RM  went for a more serious vibe, choosing Intro: persona and Stay for the album. In his video, he spoke about his different personas and how he has come to love them, realising they’re all him. RM also made a pun about how the members of BTS and ARMY have “Stay” ed through all his personas, and It’s the cutest thing. Someone tell him that we’re not going anywhere.

    Proof of Suga

Trust Suga to pick two songs in a completely different style. He chose Trivia: Seesaw, a calm song and BTS Cypher PT3: Killer, a very energetic song. With Suga, music is about exploring challenges and executing your great ideas. In a few minutes, Proof of Suga encourages us to take risks, push the limits and enjoy all the many joys of life.

    Proof of J-hope

J-hope’s addition to the album is  Outro: Her and Ego. He chose Her because of the misunderstood interpretation of the song and how it’s still valid. And I could relate to how ego makes people hide parts of themselves from others. J-hope explained that coming to a place where he could accept himself was easy because the members and ARMY accepted all of him.

  • How to Accessorise Like a K-Pop Idol in Nigeria

K-pop idols have the best style. Watch their interviews and music videos to see for yourself. As a K-pop fan, it makes sense to want to copy them. To pull off the gorgeous aesthetic, you have to note a few things like wearing many silver accessories and owning lots of rings. Here are all the other awesome ways to look like your favourite K-pop idol.

    Lots of soft coloured dye

Hair dye is obviously not an accessory, but with the way K-pop idols do it, it might as well be. Will you get disowned by your Nigerian parents? Probably. But at least you’ll maintain beauty.

RELATED: Beginner Tips to Know Before Dyeing Your Hair

    Wear long earrings

And I mean long ones. If it’s not the type that’ll make amebo people take another look when you pass by them, then you’ve not even started. Bonus points if you have multiple piercings.

    Buy leather accessories

So what if the searing Nigerian sun peels off the leather and people look at you funny? What do they know? In fact, make it afro-fusion, leather belt and native wear, or leather vest and agbada. Go wild with it.

    Own boots

You won’t even look too far off from most Nigerians these days because everyone owns boots. Boots will elevate your outfit and give you that K-pop “look”, but don’t go for the basic ones. Think spikes and platforms that’ll increase your height by seven.

RELATED: QUIZ: Only Kpop Stans Can Make it to the End of This Quiz

    Fight the heat with heat

Always wear leg warmers and hand warmers. You get to look like your favourite K-pop idol while manifesting a life in a country where you can’t wear those without fainting.

    Chains

At your discretion, layer the fuck out of your chains until your neck is heavy. It doesn’t even have to match or anything. Your neck is your oyster; go ham.

    Fake tattoos

Whether you want to believe it or not, your favourite idol probably uses fake tattoos. You too can do it, and the best part? It’s not permanent enough for you to get disowned!

    Rings

Come on, if you didn’t know to stock up on rings, do you even like K-pop? With rings, the chunkier, the better. Think giant skulls or recent decorations.

That’s why we created PURPLEWINE, a 4th-gen girl crush band made up of seven Nigerian Gen-Z stars. Let’s find out why each member would be in this Nigerian K-pop girl group, what the group would be known for, how well they’d do and how they’d eventually disband.

    The Unnie Line (older members)

    Sanchan: The Leader

K-pop group leaders are either the oldest by age or years of training (RM in BTS, Red Velvet’s Irene).

This 24-year-old brand influencer, popularly known as White Melanin, would be the oldest member, making her the default leader. The K-pop company would select Sanchan unnie to be a “visual” (AKA fine girl of the group) because of her modelling background as the face of many beauty brands. Her half-Japanese ethnicity would also be a factor, but the company would constantly deny it. Most likely the last member to be picked, they would train her for about a year to pass as a vocalist, dancer and maybe even rapper. None of that would matter though because what they want are her visuals and existing popularity to promote the group. She’ll always look out for the other members, but like BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, very few people will know she’s the leader as she’ll be completely overshadowed by the “centre” (AKA most popular member).

    Positions: leader, visual, sub-vocalist

    Fave: The Vocalist

The official vocalist position is usually given to the member with the best vocal range or technique (Aespa’s Ningning, EXO’s Baekhyun). That doesn’t mean the other members aren’t technically vocalists too.

Fave (21) is understated but talented and passionate about music. She would’ve joined the company very early on, say ten years before PURPLEWINE’s debut. She would’ve known since she was a kid that she wanted to sing, auditioned to join the company and been the only one of thousands to be picked that year. She would then spend ten years as a trainee, learning to play every instrument (and dance every choreo) in the book while perfecting her vocals, only to be given one position and barely any parts in songs once they debut. Any part she does get would be the most difficult one. But she would kill it, so her stans would dedicate their lives to attacking the company for not giving her more.

Ayra Starr: The Centre & Face

The most popular one who’s also usually the one with the most skills. Sometimes, the centre is a different person from the face of the group (In ITZY, Ryujin is the centre and Yeji is the face, while BLACKPINK’s Jennie is both).

It would be love at first sight between the company and the self-assured 19-year-old Ayra. She joined after Fave, but still very early on, as an IJGB, and has been crowned the company’s princess/secret weapon ever since. Considered an ace because of her singing, dancing and visual skills (they’ll probably train her to hold her own as a rapper too) and charisma, the company would start promoting her some months before the debut, as the face of the group. Then, once PURPLEWINE debuts, she would literally be at the centre of the group in everything — photo shoots, music videos, live performances — the person who sings first on all their songs, gets the most lines to sing, and generally be the Beyonce. There’s one in every group TBH.

    The Maknae Line (younger members)

    Diana Eneje: The Visual

The official visual of any K-pop group is the most attractive member or the closest to local beauty standards (IVE’s Wonyoung, Jisoo of BLACKPINK).

Also 19, Diana would’ve been scouted four years earlier, by one of many company reps who roam the streets, for a group they hadn’t formed yet at the time they noticed her. Since her looks more closely represent the Nigerian standard of beauty than Sanchan’s, they would want her to be the main visual of the group. She’d probably want to be a model or actress, but they’d convince her she was made for pop superstardom despite never actually hearing her sing. She would accept and spend the next four years training for it. The company would use her and Ayra to promote the group pre-debut so that by the time PURPLEWINE debuts, they would already be it-girls. However, it won’t take long for stans to accuse her of not having any talent. But hey, Posh Spice didn’t care, so why should she?

    Susan Pwajok: The Rapper

The cool kid with the best rapping skills (BIGBANG’s G-Dragon, Soyeon of (G)I-DLE).

There’s no evidence that Susan can actually rap. But the actress has major rapper vibes, and I honestly think she should consider it, just in case she’s looking for a side hustle. Anyway, that’s what the company would be thinking when they recruit her for this Nigerian K-pop girl group. After watching one of her many Instagram videos in which she’s being cool as usual, someone in the company would have a vision of her as a pop star and reach out to her. She’d then become a trainee for three to four years, during which time her swag would evolve into great rapping and dancing skills. She’ll end up being the most popular member some years after their debut because everyone loves a good rapper. Side note: Nigeria needs female rappers!

Positions: lead rapper, lead dancer, sub vocalist

    Amarachi: The Dancer

The most impressive dancer in terms of technique (LISA of BLACKPINK, Red Velvet’s Seulgi, TWICE’s Momo).

Do you remember Amarachi Dance by Nigerian Willow Smith and winner of the first Airtel Nigeria’s Got Talent, Amarachi Uyanne? Well, Amarachi went viral in 2012 after winning and dropping the song (and another one featuring Phyno). She’s 17 now and has spent the last few years she was out of the spotlight swooped up by the company to train rigorously for a grand comeback as a member of PURPLEWINE. The company would be banking on people’s surprise at her return and transformation to promote the group even more. Not to mention that her obvious dancing talent would’ve been refined to its fullest power level through almost ten years of training, so she would get mad dance breaks during live performances. The devil works hard, but the head of this company works harder.

Position: main dancer, sub vocalist, sub rapper

    Itohan: The Maknae

The youngest one (NewJeans’s Hyein, Mamamoo’s Hwasa)

The company would snatch Itohan right after she’s made a name for herself as the Baby Dragon of the just concluded Nigerian Idol (2022). The 17-year-old would be the voice they’d been searching for to round up the group as the youngest member or “maknae”, with a huge fanbase hungry to support her harder after she failed to win the popular talent competition. They would expect her to unfurl, performing alongside the older, bolder members, so that when the band tragically goes on indefinite hiatus five years in, she would still be young — but experienced and famous — enough to have a long solo career ahead of her. Would they be conniving devils if they put all their eggs in the Ayra Starr “solo takeover” basket? I think not. She’ll sing all dem special bridges, and the stans will tag her “golden maknae” because of her big vocals, a la BTS’ Jungkook.

    Positions: main vocalist, maknae

    Introducing PURPLEWINE

The ult 4th-gen group, PURPLEWINE’s badassery would catch everyone’s attention right away. Their visuals would be unmatched, and since there aren’t that many local female acts, they would be an instant hit, dropping fast and catchy songs with a mostly afro-trap, amapiano sound. Their choreos would be tight; they would invent new moves that would go viral, and put their spin on old popular ones as well. Like every K-pop music video, theirs would smell of Hollywood blockbuster-worthy budgets that would get them huge numbers on YouTube. That would be the beginning of the Nigerian K-pop girl group global invasion. You’re welcome, Don Jazzy.

The Break-Up of an Iconic Girl Group

Unfortunately, the company would mismanage their finances, everyone would vex over the preferential treatment of Ayra, and as soon as their five-year contract is up, only three out of seven would renew. Most would want to return to their actual careers; they’ve acquired the status of global pop icons, so they can now run the acting, modelling or influencer industries too. But don’t worry, OT7 forever!

  • These 10 K-Pop Bands Should Be on Your Next Playlist

If you’re trying to get into the amazing world of  K-pop, it can get a little confusing because there are many groups. You might already know  BTS, BLACKPINK, Monsta X and TWICE, but here are ten other amazing K-pop bands you should know that’ll take your playlist to the next level.

    TXT (Tomorrow X Together)

TXT is BTS’s younger group from the same entertainment company, so you’d be dulling if they weren’t on your playlist. Their sound is a mix of alternative R&B,  pop-rock, and pop-punk. They have that good vibe that makes gloomy days feel brighter with their music. Add “Blue HOUR” and “Good Boy Gone Bad” to your playlist, and you won’t regret it.

    Stray Kids

If not for anything, add Stray Kids to your playlist for Felix’s deep ass voice on “Christmas EveL” and God’s Menu”. Their sound is unique, and you just know they are funny because of how they play with their songs and album titles, e.g. “ODDINARY” and “NOEASY”, a play on ordinary and noisy. If you weren’t already a STAY, you’re about to become one.

    Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher has the most unique video concepts in K-pop girl groups, with their mysterious horror and fantasy fusion visuals. While they have a couple of dance-pop songs, they mostly dabble with rock and metal. Having them on your next playlist is proof of good taste.

    ITZY

If you’re looking for girl boss music that will make you feel badass, ITZY has you covered. They work for those moments at 3 a.m. when you are manic and awake, and all you want to do is dance. If you listened to older bands like Miss A, you’d appreciate ITZY’S music. You may have heard “LOCO” or “Not Shy” on a random K-pop radio, but take this as a recommendation, if not.

    (G)I-DLE

Any good playlist should have a mix of different songs, and what better way to shake up your playlist than with a song by (G)I-DLE? They have a song for every genre under the sun, and their music is an effortless blend of everything from house, Latin pop and hip-hop. Do yourself a favour and add “TOMBOY” by them to your playlist.

    EXO

Get ready to stan. That’s just it. EXO has wholly mastered the fine art of sexy R&B with their vocals, bad boy vibes, and music video concepts that are out of this world. Start your morning listening to “The Eve” or “Love Shot”, and you’ll definitely have a good day.

    NCT

Here’s the thing, NCT is a 23 member boy group divided into four units, NCT U, NCT Dream, NCT 127 and wayV. The bigger the group, the better the sound, right? The answer’s yes. Their genre is a fusion of hip hop, R&B, EDM and teen pop. You can’t go wrong with a song from each unit in your playlist. Also, if you’re a fan of Hotel Del Luna and Twenty-Five Twenty-One K-drama, you probably heard NCT’S vocals in their OST.

    ATEEZ

ATEEZ is basically the male version of Dreamcatcher. This group arguably had one of the most powerful debuts in K-pop history. They have strong vocals, powerful flows and intense choreography. Ever heard Koreans sing trap music? No? Well, you’re in for a ride. Add “Deja Vu” to your playlist today for clear skin.

    ENHYPEN

ENHYPEN has that rainy day vibe that makes you feel like you’re in a coming of age movie. It’s probably why their song “Polaroid Love” went viral on TikTok because every video under that sound just has good vibes. Whether it’s getting you into your feels with “FEVER” or preparing you for a good day with Polaroid Love, ENHYPEN works for any playlist.

    Treasure

If you spend all your time on TikTok, chances are you already know one of their songs,DARARI”. It went viral, and it’s not even the title track “JIK JIN” from the album. That’s just how good this young boy group is. Don’t be a dead guy; spice up your playlist with Treasure’s songs today.

TAKE THIS QUIZ: QUIZ: Only Kpop Stans Can Make it to the End of This Quiz

  • How to Spot a K-Pop Fan in Nigeria

Finding a k-pop stan in Nigeria is not as hard as you think. If you’re looking for a small community of people with the best taste in music, you’re reading the right article. Here are ways to spot a K-pop fan in Nigeria.

    1. They randomly speak Korean in normal conversation

They don’t even care if you understand or not; they’ll just start talking, expecting you to fill in the blanks on your own. If you meet anyone that casually uses “Oppa” or “Eomma” in a regular conversation, it’s safe to ask if they’re a K-pop stan.

RELATED: Every K-Drama Fan Should Know These Basic Korean Phrases

    2. They behave like cultists

If you see anyone telling someone else about their favourite musician, and it looks like they are trying to initiate the person into a cult that belongs to seven talented, good-looking men, best believe you’ve found your people.

    3. Stand in the middle of a market and shout a random band member’s name

Naturally, everyone is going to turn around and hiss at you, but look out for the people that will smile, then run after them — you’re looking for community, and the violent take it by force after all.

    4. Carry a big speaker around to play K-Pop songs

Many people will swear at you — As they should, because what in the nuisance? But your people will start dancing because they can’t resist it.

    5. Post a random K-Pop idol’s picture on your status

No K-pop stan can resist the urge to comment when they see a picture of their fave. Plus, it’ll give you a chance to weed out the anti-K-pop people on your contact list.

    6. Ask around for people that never have data

That’s how you know a proper K-pop Stan tbh. They spend all their money buying data to stream live videos of concerts because K-pop artists don’t tour African countries like that.

  • Top 7 BTS Music Videos Everyone Should Watch

Since their debut in 2013, the K-pop kings BTS, also known as the “Bangtan Boys”, are the best things that have happened to the world since Jollof rice. Of course, none of their success would have been possible if their art — the songs and their accompanying music videos — weren’t any good, E.g. “Permission to Dance” earned 152 million plays in its first seven days of release on YouTube in July 2021. The septet comprising Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, V, Jungkook and Jimin, use their lyrics and visuals to express their love for their “ARMY” (Adorable Representative MC for Youth) They sing to remind this “ARMY” about taking care of their mental health while asking them to rebel against bullying and governmental corruption. Most of all, they teach their fans that they never walk alone and also how to love themselves. In no particular order, here are 7 of our favourite BTS music videos, one for each member of the band:

    [newsletter]

    1.“Blood, Sweat & Tears”

This is by far BTS’s best music video, as well as one of their best songs. “Blood, Sweat & Tears” is the title track for their 2016 album “Wings” and falls into the Bangtan Universe created by Big Hit Entertainment, which contains all the concepts and eras surrounding the group’s fictional universe. The video’s themes are based on a dream state which revolves around friendship, love, temptation and the transition from youth into adulthood.

One thing BTS will do is to break away from the standard expectations of K-pop videos to give us the most aesthetically pleasing visuals and plots.

From their outfits to the choreography, RM’s short rap bit, and that last scene with V. Omo! Of course, this song earned them their first nomination for a Billboard Music Award.

    2. “FAKE LOVE”

Jungkook starts the intro with, “I grew a flower that can’t be bloomed in a dream that can’t come true.” And immediately, I knew that heartbreak was waiting for me in the lyrics.

“FAKE LOVE” is the lead single in “Love Yourself: Tear”, the group’s third album. The video broke the record for the most-watched music video on YouTube within 24 hours, hitting 35.9 million views on its first day. In “FAKE LOVE,” BTS calls us out for not appreciating ourselves, being afraid and desperately trying to hide our insecurities. The video gave me early 2000s vibes, with scenes of BTS trying to run away from this fake love they sing about. Throughout the video, each member has to confront a representation of their darkest fears until they learn to be true to themselves.

    3. “Black Swan”

This video is an artistic masterpiece, and every scene is breathtaking. This is one of the best songs in their 2020 album “Map of the Soul:7.” RM sings, “If this can no longer resonate, no longer make my heart vibrate, then this might be how I die my first death,” affirming that their passion for music does not burn as it used to, especially since the band’s oldest member Jin was up for mandatory service enlistment. While fans were sad about this, they also appreciated how much Jimin’s knowledge of contemporary dance was used to create a daunting version of a black swan. We stan hard.

    4. “Dynamite”

This was the group’s first single recorded fully in English. They released it in summer 2020 to give their fans hope and happiness at the start of the pandemic. It shattered so many records and won them a Grammy nomination.

The visuals were charming with their retro funk-influenced outfits; just think of V’s baby blue Kangol hat and the chore in a record shop. The video was a shot in beautiful pastel colours as BTS attempted to encourage their fans. We were well encouraged, thank you.

    5. “IDOL”

Idol is a Korean word for pop stars. They live for their fans and the public always has opinions on how they should live their lives.

BTS used “IDOL” to show us they are Koreans and extremely proud of it, and that they do not intend to live for the public eye. They basically said, “I be Idol no mean say I go die.” The visuals were fun and silly, unlike most of their videos, and this song is also part of BTS’s love yourself series.

    6. “Fire”

For this video, BTS set some of their props on fire and sources have said that it’s the perfect workout song — if you do that kind of evil thing

Several K-Dramas have used this song for their workout scenes, and I do not blame them. The choreography is enough work as it is. The energy in this song is unmatched, and it is literally fire. If someone mentions “Fire” by BTS and you do not immediately hear SUGA’s “Bultaoreune” in your head, are you even a fan?

    7. “No”

I mean, I had to add an old song for the culture. BTS does not just sing about loving yourself and hope, they also sing about social justice. “No” was a protest against the harsh academic standards and expectations of Korean kids. They sang about being turned into study machines and losing friends just to be at the top. BTS used this song to encourage people to go after their dreams and be free. Of course, they have an army at their back supporting them when they constantly speak up for the youth.
