  • Tunde Onakoya Wants to Break a Guinness World Record. But He’s Also Made These Moves

On January 4, 2022, I was among thousands of X users who saw a random tweet asking people to “Explain what you do for a living”. In the sea of thousands of responses the tweet generated, one stood out.  It was from Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya.

“I teach people how to drop weapons and pick up plastic,” he wrote.

This wasn’t the first time I’d heard of his humanitarian work around using chess to change lives.  In 2021, he’d gone viral on social media for playing chess with area-boys in the highly notorious Oshodi under-bridge. However, that tweet gave me a better perspective about the importance of his work and why he must succeed.

Two years after my epiphany, the 29-year-old continues his mission to spread the gospel of chess as an instrument of hope. On April 17, Onakoya will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon. In his words, “he’s doing this for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education”.

As his latest effort is receiving keen attention from the world, we thought it might be useful to highlight some of his wins since he started Chess in Slums Initiative in 2018.

Raising awareness on cerebral palsy after Ferdinand Maumo’s 2021 win

In April 2021, Onakoya and his team met Ferdinand Maumo in the Makoko slum. Ferdinand,  a 10-year-old cerebral palsy patient, expressed interest in the chess club. After two weeks of practice and playing with other kids, Ferdinand participated and won the junior section of a local tournament. Ferdinand’s victory gave people a different perspective about disability and education. In the months that followed, Onakoya and Ferdinand were hosted by Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu.

Playing and winning against 10 opponents at DLD Conference

In February 2024, Onakoya made history at the Digital Life Design (DLD) conference in Germany after he played a game of Chess against 10 opponents simultaneously, emerging victorious in every match. He attended the conference to spread his gospel of giving at least one million African children the chance to lead a better life by teaching them the game of chess.

    Canadian high commissioner’s visit

In March 2022, Onakoya hosted the Canadian high commissioner to Nigeria, Kevin Tokar, and eight sailors from the Royal Canadian Navy to a game of chess at the Oshodi under-bridge. While the visit brought more visibility to his work around chess, the highlight was students winning against the commissioner and other members of his group.

Raised ₦50 million against a global goal of $1m

Since he kicked off the Chess in Slum initiative, Onakoya has embarked on a personal fundraising campaign. In January 2022, the chest master revealed he’d raised over ₦50 million from social media donations to support his work. As part of his efforts to reach a global fundraising goal of $1m, Onakoya launched the popular ChessFila in November 2022. Every sale of the ₦5000 aso-oke went into giving 1000 kids access to formal education.

    The Oshodi tournament

Onakoya and his team organised the first ever Oshodi Underbridge Chess Tournament in 2021. Among the 51 kids who participated in the tournament was 19-year-old Fawaz Adeoye, a previously homeless kid who worked as a bus conductor. Adeoye emerged as the winner of the tournament, walking away with a  ₦2m prize money. In a later update shared in December 2023, Onakoya said Adeoye “now works as an intern in a lawyer’s office and builds websites”.

    Onakoya’s other many accolades

In 2021, Onakoya won the  Future Awards Africa prize for Community Action. This was followed by getting named  Leadership Newspaper’s Social Impact Person of 2022. Onakoya also won the inaugural Business Insider Award for Social Entrepreneur of The Year in 2022.

You can support Tunde Onakoya’s work by sponsoring a child’s education with $800 dollars or donating to the initiative’s mission to educate 3000 out-of-school kids.

Peter Enehe, the latest Nigerian Guinness World Record (GWR) aspirant, is a visual artist who wants to break a record for the longest caricature marathon.

To beat the current record of 77 hours set by Indian artist, Hariom Kumar Singh, in 2017, Peter plans to draw for 90 hours. Here’s what we know about his attempt so far.

    When did he start?

On December 9, 2023, Peter shared that GWR had approved his application and given him the go-ahead to attempt to break the record.

The drawing marathon officially kicked off at around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Chinbell Luxury Hotel and Suites, Palm Springs Road, Lekki Peninsula Il, Ikate, Lagos. So far, he’s drawn Nigerian celebrities, politicians and supporters who showed up at the venue to cheer him on.

    A brief timeline

On Friday, January 26, Peter hit 24 hours of his 90-hour goal. He drew over 20 caricatures within this period.

On January 28, at precisely 9:15 p.m., Peter hit the 77-hour mark, to beat the current world record.

  • Nigerians Who Have Attempted to Break Guinness World Records in 2023

On May 11, 2023, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci started her 100 hours cook-a-thon, and broke the  Guinness World Record for the “longest cooking marathon by an individual” on May 15th. The feat was more than just a proud Nigerian moment, it also inspired more people to attempt to break and set Guinness World Record across different categories.

So we compiled a list of all Nigerians who have attempted to break the GWR since Hilda Baci.

    Philip Solomon

On January 24th, 2023, Philip Solomon from Akure, Ondo State, was declared a world record holder for the most skips (153) on one foot in 30 seconds. Philip broke Bangladesh’s Rasel Islam 145 steps record set in 2021.

    Chef Dami

A month after Hilda Baci became the longest cooking chef on GWR, Damilola Adeparusi, a 22-year-old chef from Ekiti attempted to break the record, aiming to cook for 120 hours.

Although the Board of Guinness World Records didn’t affirm her as the new record holder, some Nigerians cheered her, while some criticised her.

    Chef Adeola

In an attempt to surpass Hilda Baci’s world-recorded cooking hours, a chef from Ondo State, Adeola Adeyeye, embarked on a 150-hour cooking marathon. She began on June 30, 2023 and completed it on July 7th. However, GWR didn’t recognise her attempt.

    Blaqk Stereo Music Group (BSMG)

Nigerian actor and comedian Hawwal Emmanuel Olarenwaju Ogungbadero led 15 artists under his company, BSMG, to set the record for the longest recording marathon on June 25th, 2023. The recording session lasted for 40 hours, nineteen seconds.

    Tonye Solomon

On August 10, 2023, Tonye Solomon from Bayelsa State set the record for taking the most steps (150) climbed on a ladder while balancing a football on his head.

    Hitsound

Joshua Abba Jeremiah, AKA Hitsound, is a music producer, singer and YouTuber from Kogi State. On September 28, 2023, he attempted to record several artists for 72 hours to break the longest recording session record BSMG had set earlier in June.

    Lola Mewu

Nigerian painter and 2D artist Oyinlola Mewu attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest painting marathon, clocking in at 72 hours. She started her painting marathon on October 28, 2023 and finished October 31, 2023 — a decade after Belgium’s Roland Palmaerts’ feat in 2013.

    Chef Tope

Another Nigerian chef rose up to reclaim the title back to Nigeria on November 9th. Chef Tope’s attempt was a 200-hour cook-a-thon in Ogbomoso, Oyo State on November 18th.

Remember Irish chef Alan Fisher took the record from Hida Baci, after completing a 119 hours and 57 minutes cooking session.

    Subair Enitan

Although Subair, a 200-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), has landed in the hospital with hand injuries, she completed a 58 hours task of washing clothes. Subair applied for the GWR task last June.
