  • Money Conversations Don’t Have to Be Awkward – goPlay Cards Are Changing the Narrative

Spending time with my friends on a night out is amazing, full of fun, and pure cruise because we get to gist and catch up. But the most interesting thing about our hangouts is that we rotate picking up the bill. Don’t get me wrong o, we’re considerate of each other’s pockets and there’s no form of gaslighting. We just respect each other’s finances, so whenever it’s time to link up, we take turns to settle the tab, and whoever is meant to will choose a hot spot or activity of their choice.

It’s pretty wholesome but it’s also a result of the fact that our eyes have seen shege, and being a young adult in Nigeria requires certain survival skills. Our squad consists of three guys and two girls; we all met during our NYSC days and bonded over Marvel movies and food. But now, we have jobs that pay fairly well but not enough to fund the exciting lifestyles we want. So we had to look for ways to have each other’s backs, which is how our rotation culture started. However, something that’s always been almost non-existent in our clique is deep conversations about funds, and recently, it surfaced through a funny experience.

It was one of our usual rendezvous, the girls were busy so it was just the guys around. We went to a restaurant in Ikoyi to chill until these fine babes walked in and we lost focus. After silly deliberations, we approached them, introduced ourselves, and asked if we could buy them cocktails. These baddies probably thought we had some mad money, and ordered drinks and expensive meals off the menu. The bill came, and I noticed the uncomfortable look on my guy’s face as it was his turn to pick up the tab. It was 100k, and he came with a 45k budget. To cut the story short, we split the bill to avoid embarrassment.

One thing this experience taught me is that, for close friends, we didn’t talk enough about our personal finances. Of course, we laughed off the drama and told it to the girls, who dragged us further. However, one of them mentioned that money is not particularly an easy subject and prompted us to try goPlay cards, a newly introduced set of fun game cards she got from her bank, gomoney. I was more than open to it, since I had checked them out online and observed how the brand demonstrates a deep understanding of cultivating strong financial habits among youngsters. On checking out the cards, we discovered that it’s a fun way to gain insights into factors that could influence money habits and patterns. Even more interesting, gomoney’s goPlay cards can be played almost anywhere – birthday parties, beach or pool hangouts, friends meet-ups, podcast sessions, whatever event has people in it.

At the next hangout, we visited a lounge, had some drinks, and answered the juicy questions from the goPlay cards. It was so natural and we had a lot of banter that left us feeling like we now knew each other better. I have even gone ahead to place a request for mine. By the way, the gomoney app is available on the App Store and Google Play Store.
It’s important to stay open-minded about money conversations with friends, and being proactive starts with creating safe and fun spaces to keep everyone’s money game strong and healthy.

A great event is characterised by the food, music, cliques, vibes and variety of outfits. These and lots more were what the just concluded HERtitude event was about. The ambience was vibrant, radiating excitement, fun and the I’m-about to-let-go-of-any-home-training-I-came-here-with energy.

The event was packed with activities including a fashion show, twerking competition, speed friendship, sip and paint, candle making, massage sessions, board games and karaoke, awakening the adventurer in all the hot ladies present. The fashion show was top on our list of exciting activities as we saw budding models on the runway — you’d think it was Lagos Fashion Week. Amidst all of that fun, trust gomoney to do their thing — cheering the hot babes and dishing out gifts to winners at the end of the fashion show.

Then there was the speed friendship session; ladies were caught in action, exchanging numbers. Whoever said ladies are not super friendly to each other? Well, the hot babes at HERtitude 2023 were, and we are pretty sure every lady present made one hot friend!

We weren’t playing around when we said, “Every woman deserves a break”. gomoney made this more remarkable by giving the hot ladies a well-deserved pampering. From free meal tickets to care boxes and other goodies, this is one event that would live rent-free in the ladies’ minds.

You thought we were going to end it here without mentioning the music? You know what they say about how music brings people together? HERtitude 2023 was no different. Save the karaoke, the DJ filled the air with a mix of electrifying beats and infectious melodies, and the dance floor was filled with energy from all the hot babes who came prepared. From old-school classics to modern hits, the music transcended generations, creating an atmosphere of absolute bliss.

HERtitude by Zikoko was just perfect for the hot babes in Lagos to unwind, recharge and take care of themselves. It was also a cheerful reminder that self-love is important and ladies should prioritise their well-being. It was a day filled with unforgettable moments and fun times. • Money Is Not Only Meant for Spending: How I Spend and Save Smartly With gomoney

There is virtue in cultivating a saving habit because the worst money decision comes when one is under pressure, does not have a budget or doesn’t have money saved up for a specific goal or investment but my worst fear is the latter- not having money saved up, the thought alone sends a cold chill down my spine. What I know as saving today started when I was little, listening to my grandmother’s tales of how people stored money in pots and buried them in the ground and watching my own mother take out a fraction of her income to her secret safe within the house. She made me promise not to tell my father, giggling. Those stories and memories formed a great part of my saving journey.

My savings journey, where can I start from? Is it the number of times I had to enter the bank in a month to save or the long queues accompanied by the discomfort of standing for hours in the bank just to access my hard-earned money because that was the only option some few years back? My joy knew no bounds when savings moved from those long hours of discomfort to automating my savings from the comfort of my house thanks to the influx of digital banks. To be honest, at first, I was a bit sceptical but all my fears were allayed when I started using gomoney.

How this digital bank has saved me is something I enjoy talking about. I have been able to keep track of my money and make smart money decisions. Nowadays everybody wants to spend and save their money at the same time which is possible if you have the proper saving plan, and the digital bank makes that possible. I can set money goals and save according to my different needs and purposes in multiple stashes. In other words, I can have a stash for a travel goal with a savings target of one million naira and also have a stash for a change of wardrobe, laptop, emergency fund etc. This way I stay disciplined and avoid impulsive spending.

Saving doesn’t have to be boring and enormous, I can automate my savings as well as set up recurring payments to my created stash which gives me a higher chance of meeting my goals and target. There is also the option to stop saving on a set custom stop date or when my savings target is met.

Maybe adulthood is a scam and you will most likely keep pledging allegiance to that line anytime you are faced with enormous bills or you went a bit overboard in your monthly spending but the fact still remains that If you don’t know how to manage your money well, you would probably feel anxious and overwhelmed when you think about spending or saving money.

As you work and earn your money, always remember that impulsive spending will always come knocking reminding you that money is meant to be spent, don’t panic, it’s just a gentle reminder that you can spend and save smartly with gomoney.

Start your journey to financial freedom today by downloading the gomoney app via the Play store or App Store.
